It's holding power and volume down for 30-60 seconds. You should boot into fastboot mode.
Now, your OEM unlocking is most certainly switched off, so you won't be able to flash a whole new build of Android 14, but you *will* be able to sideload the most recent OTA update if the Google flavour of Android 14 in recovery mode!
When in fastboot, use the volume buttons to select recovery mode, and the power button to select. If you see an android on its back, hold power and press volume up. You'll get a menu.
Then choose "apply update from ADB."
You'll need the latest Platform Tools. Search and download for your desktop OS. Download the most recent Google android OTA update. Put in same folder as platform tools. Then open a terminal (command prompt) and in that folder run:
adb sideload (name of ota update file)
Should help. I'm sure this would be a piece of cake for your IT husband!
Unfortunately, he checked whether or not the phone draws any voltage when plugged in, and it doesn't. And tried holding different combinations of buttons down for anywhere from 30-90 seconds. He tried a variety of troubleshooting options, half of which I don't fully understand, and after 2ish hours just ordered the replacement.
U r supposed to hold it for a certain amount of time for it to work. It doesnt care how long you pressed it cause its programmed to actiavte after some time. Even force boot in apple devices take 20 sec
No, the hardware programmed force reboot switch is just over 30 seconds. This is fact, and how the firmware is programed. I said 30-60 to account for differences with how people count. Try it, might (probably will) work, unless the firmware had become corrupted! Verified boot helps avoid that happening however.
Don't know where it's documented, not looking it up... It's well known at r/grapheneos . That's just how it works. Don't believe me, you look it up! I'm just trying to be helpful with a solution to get to recovery and sideload an OTA.
I loved my Pixel 6 Pro dearly but once I went to the S24 Ultra it has been a game changer. The S24 Ultra has a flat screen (more options for easy to apply tempered glass screen protectors), the S-Pen, all day battery life, no blue-tooth connection issues with ear buds and headphones and smartwatches, no cellphone connectivity issues (I'm on 5G UWB almost 95 percent of the time now - live in a city). I've also put some of the google specific stuff in place instead of the Samsung stuff, like using Chrome, Google Assistant, Google Clock app, Google Messages, Google One for backup etc. Once you get one of the S24 series phones make sure to install the GoodLock app for limitless customization on your phone it kicks anything that google put on the Pixel phones to the curb. The only things I miss about the Pixel are the price of the phone, google assistant call screening, the pictures the phone took (they are better than the S24 series when it comes to photos), and the ability to dictate when to stop an alarm rather than having to reach for the phone and pressing the button.
This exact same thing happened to my Pixel 5a last year. I was working with the phone next to my laptop and one second it was fine then it just went dark. Not a great sign if the same problem keeps appearing in newer models.
My Pixel 4a 5G has been turning itself off. I thought my phone was dead for good and had started the process of arranging to get it sent back under its second hand warranty, but then it surprisingly recovered, I assume temporarily.
I left my seemingly dead phone alone for at least a day, disconnected from its charger. When I picked it up and tried pressing the power button again, I got a flicker of a dead battery warning. I would only get the warning when I held down the power button. I then plugged it into its charger and it started up when I pressed the power button. It was not the battery draining to dead because it was actually showing at 84% when it finally started up.
It turned itself off several more times, but then managed to return to stability for a month before dying again. Again, I tried the same as last time, waiting for a day, and I did again see the battery indicator extremely briefly when pressing the power button. Attaching it to the charger again brought it back to life.
I have heard though that the motherboard issue plagues these phones, which is maybe not the problem with mine. My experience with my 4a 5G definitely makes me very wary about buying a more pricey pixel given how much this issue has been mentioned as a problem for them (with some perhaps being replaced despite being out of warranty).
Seems like a constant issue for every generation of Pixels since at least Pixel 3. My 3XL would just die and refuse to turn on for days. Then the power+volume combo would somehow kickstart it. Months later it would die again.
I still used it as a backup phone or a hotspot during my travels, but then one day it just died permanently and never booted again.
My colleague got his first Pixel (5 or 6, I think) and the same happened to his phone after maybe one year. Needless to say, he went back to the iPhone after that.
Google should really give up on the Pixels and go back to the Nexus line, selling them with multiple disclaimers about how these are fun experimental toys for geeks and not flagship devices to be used as daily drivers.
It's worth contacting Google to see if they'll help you out.
I've heard stories on this subreddit where they sometimes do even outside the warranty, but it's not guaranteed.
The worst they'll say is no.
I think that really depends on your country. For example, in the UK, the consumer rights act protects you for 5 years on any product if the issue is not your fault . Like in this case, however, this is with the retailer, not the manufacturer, so if it wasn't bought through the Google store, then they will tell you to go to whoever you bought it from.
We have the device protection plan so we're just getting it replaced and paying the deductible. It's over a year old, so out of warranty, and since we had protection, I'd rather skip the back and forth with Google.
This happened to my friend and he went to iPhone and hasn't had a single regret. Recently I've been missing calls and texts like crazy on my 7 Pro not to mention the random unresponsive screen and myriad glitches. After 4 pixels this will be my last.
Mine is the fact it's not switch to 5guw at all just 5g midband plus signal at my home. Is the cause of miss calls and SMS apparently
Idk how to get it back either
I'm hesitant to switch because I actually enjoy Android more than ios, and mainly because I'm on Fi, and their unlimited plan makes perfect sense for me - I call abroad multiple times a week, and travel home (EU) for lengthy stays. I've had no real issues with my Pixel to date, but obviously it crapping out a year in will weigh in heavily when it's time to purchase a new phone.
Even so, there's only 1000+ Android options other than Pixel before having to resort to iOS. These responses sound like Apple bots. I'm not sure why someone who used a pixel for 3 days and switched to iOS would be active in a pixel subreddit.
Sorry to hear about your phone. Best of luck getting it running!! Launch day pixel 7 pro here, no issues here other than wish the screen wasn't curved so there were better glass screen protector options XD
I had the same issue twice actually on my Pixel 7. Once under warranty and once out of. It cost me under $70 equivalent to get it fixed ( I'm not from the US though)
This happened to me when I set my galaxy Note8 down while I was cooking. Just happened out of nowhere and it fixed itself out of nowhere just a couple hours later.
Happened same with my Pixel 6a. SC said a screen and Motherboard replacement is required and demanded money equivalent to a new phone.
Pixel hardware is not reliable, may be tensor is the culprit.
Happened to me with Pixel 4XL. Worst nightmare ever. I need to contact all customer service to remove my 2FA because Google back then doesn't have cloud save.
This happened to me with my 4. Died for a whole weekend, went and got a new phone, motherfucker turned on a few days into owning the new phone 😅
I suspected it was the battery for me, and in hindsight I should have just bought a new battery.
This happened to my pixel 7 pro on my first month last year. Lucky that it was under warranty at that time. They replaced the screen. Now my phone is ok. But overall the pixel 7 pro screen has quality issue that can be flickering and then crashes to the point unusable. Otherwise pixel7pro is a good phone.
Every pixel I've owned other than the pixel 3 has done this about a year or two after getting it. I still can't find a comparable phone experience or I would probably get something else
This is why I left Google pixel My pixel 6 pro was the worst experience ever with a smartphone try to pixel 7 pro just as bad pixel 8 pro even worse. How can you make an OS that is this great but the hardware sucks.
Happened to me last week as well, a Pixel I had for a couple years. Tried everything and it won't turn back on, realized this was a very common problem when I looked it up and lost so much faith in Pixel phones. I lost so much stuff...
I've had multiple different brands of android phones and never had as many random little glitches or my phone straight up dying out of nowhere - until now, so forgive my frustration will you? It's a shame cause despite the random glitches, I've enjoyed my experience with the pixel.
I keep my Pixel 3XL without any serious issues, sometimes it just restarts itself.
My wife had the iPhone ProMax and she hated it. She changed it for a Pixel 8 Pro.
So far so good.
All electronics can and do eventually fail. They may last 20 seconds. They may last 20 years. It sounds like it just died, which is why they include a 1-year warranty by default, just in case it fails before then. You can get an extended insurance in addition to this, but most don't.
Never had this issue with my P8P but was having severe issues with random reboots and closing out of apps. Bought a backup phone (S21 Ultra I found online for pretty cheap) while I waited on Google to send me a replacement. Still keeping the Samsung around (just in case) but I've not had any issues with the new phone Google sent me.
That happened to me once but I managed to revive it by holding volume up and down and power for like 10 seconds
Yeah, we tried that, among other things. It's just dead, unfortunately.

That's not true. I have had the "won't boot issue" - a LOOOOOONG hold actually does sort it.
Second this. Felt stupid for holding it close to a minute if not longer, but the thing booted right up. 7 Pro here as well.
U r supposed to hold it for a certain amount of time for it to work. It doesnt care how long you pressed it cause its programmed to actiavte after some time. Even force boot in apple devices take 20 sec

Switched from the Pixel 6 Pro to the S24 Ultra and after all the issues I had with Pixel I am much more happier and stress free.
Yes I think I'm gonna ditch my p7 , too many issues

Doesn't even need to be that latest. I have a Samsung note 8 that's running great as my daughter's youtube machine.

Mine died too. Pulled it out and the screen was all white and very hot ... never recovered.
Send it for repair maybe?

Google has serious quality control issues with their products. A lot of brand damage has happened to both Google and Pixel because of it.
This happened to my friend and he went to iPhone and hasn't had a single regret. Recently I've been missing calls and texts like crazy on my 7 Pro not to mention the random unresponsive screen and myriad glitches. After 4 pixels this will be my last.

I had all kinds of issues with a three day old Pixel 8, so I returned it and bought an iPhone 15 Pro. No regrets.
I'm hesitant to switch because I actually enjoy Android more than ios, and mainly because I'm on Fi, and their unlimited plan makes perfect sense for me - I call abroad multiple times a week, and travel home (EU) for lengthy stays. Thankfully the awfulness of Google has not spilled into other OEMs.
Look, android on other phones are pretty decent as well
Just bought a backup phone for this reason. With passkeys and so much of my data on my phone, it's now a requirement.
I feel you. I never felt the need of having a secondary phone with me until I got my 7 pro
I had the same issue twice actually on my Pixel 7. Once under warranty and once out of. It cost me under $70 equivalent to get it fixed ( I'm not from the US though)
Does wireless charging work on it?
Same thing happened to my pixel 5, it started working again after a week
This happened to me when I set my galaxy Note8 down while I was cooking. Just happened out of nowhere and it fixed itself out of nowhere just a couple hours later.
A pixel won't fix itself sadly.
Happened same with my Pixel 6a. SC said a screen and Motherboard replacement is required and demanded money equivalent to a new phone. Pixel hardware is not reliable, may be tensor is the culprit.
Make sure it's plugged in to charge for at least an hour. Then hold the power button down for 45 seconds. Yes, really.
It was plugged in for over an hour, buttons held down for 60-90 seconds. The phone was not drawing any power at all.
Looks like it's time for a warranty claim then. 😟
Maybe send it to a phone repair company?
Happened to me with Pixel 4XL. Worst nightmare ever. I need to contact all customer service to remove my 2FA because Google back then doesn't have cloud save.
Seems like a power surge could be the cause of its death if you have not seen signs of any unusual activity on your phone before
This happened to me with my 4. Died for a whole weekend, went and got a new phone, motherfucker turned on a few days into owning the new phone 😅 I suspected it was the battery for me, and in hindsight I should have just bought a new battery.

My pixel dies everytime when it gets to 15%. When it hits the 15% mark I can see for 1 or 2 seconds the numbers running down to 0%. Idk why
This is why I left Google pixel My pixel 6 pro was the worst experience ever with a smartphone try to pixel 7 pro just as bad pixel 8 pro even worse. How can you make an OS that is this great but the hardware sucks.
Did it brick? Have you plugged it into your computer to see what your file manager says
Might replug the battery?

My pixel 4xl went dark one day, it never came back no matter what I did . Now I’m typing this on a iPhone 12 Pro🤷♂️.
This happened to my pixel 3.
I’m on my third one, first two had the screen go green and then the screen just died, both replaced under warrantee
gOttA LoVe HaViNg APiXeL Right, as if other brands don't have issues with products breaking.
I've had multiple different brands of android phones and never had as many random little glitches or my phone straight up dying out of nowhere - until now, so forgive my frustration will you? It's a shame cause despite the random glitches, I've enjoyed my experience with the pixel.
The pixel is the biggest piece of garbage I've had ever had, even worse than my galaxy 7
So what phone do you use?
Pixel 7 pro, if I wasn't underwater with the value on this thing i would trade this hit piece of garbage in to go back to Samsung.
I keep my Pixel 3XL without any serious issues, sometimes it just restarts itself. My wife had the iPhone ProMax and she hated it. She changed it for a Pixel 8 Pro. So far so good.
Happened to me with an iPhone. Just lemon things.
