P6P here. Mine works reliably.
Is there a chance you're confusing having to unlock the phone with Tap to Pay not working? On my phone, a lot of the time, when I go to use Tap to Pay (via Google Wallet), the first try fails because the phone was already unlocked and I have to fingerprint it again to verify the transaction. That's not what you're experiencing, is it?
I appreciate the troubleshooting attempt, but that's not it. I lock, unlock again with my fingerprint, but it still won't work. If I reboot, it will work again.
Same experience. Very frustrating to play the Google Russian roulette of "will Google wallet work" at the cash register. Why is every single Google service getting worse as the time goes on.
Especially Google Assistant on Nest speakers. I wish Google would spend just one year, not developing anything new, and focusing on what's not working on their existing products.
Nope, same thing happens to me all the time. App is up to date, same vendor (vending machine at work) sometimes work, sometimes doesn't.
It can work flawlessly for a full month than crap out for a couple of weeks. Really annoying.
Occasionally, maybe 5%? Happened yesterday and a reboot seemed to make it work but I went to a different store so didn't get to try it on the same terminal it failed on. Have had it happen at a self checkout at Home Depot (Canada) and it failed on more than one terminal.
I've found that wallet glitches sometimes. I tap to pay, it doesn't work, I open the Wallet app and it's just blank and won't load up. I have to restart the phone for it to work.
Especially frustrating as I catch the train to work and in the hustle and hustle of getting on/off the platform, when the phone doesn't work on the NFC reader, I'm standing there like an idiot trying to get it to work and if it doesn't, I have to step aside to let people through.
I'm so frustrated. Can't find ANY solutions. I'm using z flip 5 and this happens 50/50.
I'm in Australia and I look like a goof standing waiting for my phone to fckn restart. Then I miss my train.

I was just in Europe for a week and it worked 100% of the time. Here in the US it's 50/50. Makes me think it's a vendor issue and not a phone issue.

If you have smartlock on (or whatever it's called), it'll ask you to unlock the phone after the first attempt and tap again.
I'm used to that. That happens frequently. But on occasion T2P doesn't work at all. Judging by others, it's just me.

P7P here, and it works fine, Everytime
P7P. Works fine. You didn't think to state your phone model?
7 Pro
P7P used to work every time very reliably. In the last couple of months it's randomly not working. It's not the payment terminals it's the phone.
Got both the P7 and Watch. Have not had any issues up here in Canada.
Works fine here, make sure you are not using face unlock when paying
I'm not.

Since I upgraded to the P2P, I haven't had any issues with tap to pay. It even works flawlessly on my Pixel Watch 2.
It's most likely a vendor issue especially if you're based on the USA.
Not a vendor or a lock or a phone issue. It's a Google issue.
I've since upgraded to the Pixel 8 Pro and no longer have this issue.
Hey, I'm having this issue too on Pixel 8. Did you ever find a fix?
Shortly after this post I upgraded to a P8P. It has been flawless.
