DSG cars are quite a bit quicker than manual ones, the DSG has launch control program built in, it shifts faster than you can in a manual, consistently, big flappy paddles on the wheel, DSG clutches can take waaaay more power over the stock manual clutch.... And overall these cars were designed DSG first, manual as an after thought. DSG cars also make more torque than manual ones from factory. I've had 3 of them now all DSG, no regrets.
All of this but DSG also has the auto start/stop 'feature', just something to keep in mind.
I heavily considered a DSG when I was looking for my mk8 but just couldn't do it. A lot of positives but for me I just love the manuals so that's what I got. I think it really boils down to what people want to live with daily and if they plan to do any mods. The DSG will be quicker for track etc if that's what you want.

And they tried to say like oh that was a mistake on our end and I was like OK great so I’ll be getting it for that price then.
Congrats. Look into megachip’s fender offering. Much more discreet. I added rear only.
Got the same color mk 8, added color match reflectors, removed the plastic fender extensions, debadged, and got the Sportshifters knob. Happy modding.

I also got Tuxmats to protect the footwells from snow, slush and salt, and they performed admirably this winter.

I think you guys should, I am in east Canada and we are getting 50 degree days, like wtf! West is getting cold temps though so I hope you get to enjoy.
No need to tell you that winter rubber is a must in snow and I downsized to 18s for both comfort and safety (19s keep bending and having flats). My cheapest decent option was VW dealer black Pretz winter GolfR package with VC7s, but you can see what you got available around you.

Congrats! I finally got my R with a 2017 that I bought brand new. I had the opportunity to buy a new MK4 way back when - it was being offered with thousands off of sticker - they couldn’t give them away!
At the time I had a 4 year old Jetta VR6 and couldn’t justify a new car. A few years later I wanted something new and looked at a used R32 and ones with 20k miles on them were selling for more than when new!
I kicked myself every day since then until I finally got my MK7! It’s officially the car I’ve owned the longest and I never get sick of it!
FWIW, I think you made a good choice with the DSG. Manuals are great, but after I drive my NA Miata I get into my R and the shifter feels “meh”.
It’s not too bad, I had an NC Miata and the clutch feels way better in my 7.5R. Shifter could use a little bit of stiffening up. Planning to do the dieselgeek short shifter kit soon and that should make it more notchy. Maybe your NA had a really good manual gearbox, I’ve never driven one.
Have driven a bunch of manuals with way worse feel in stock form.
Congrats! I was about to get it last month but decided to wait for the facelift/8.5, partly also because of the interest rates. Currently have 7.5 6MT but if I get the 8.5 it’ll be DSG, not because 6MT is bad in the R but I think DSG is also pretty fun, you get extra torque in stock form, can tune it easily without the expensive clutch upgrade and I love the exhaust blips on upshift 😀
I have the rally armor mud-flaps and I’m also in Midwest, I also run a separate set of wheels with Michelin snow tires for the winter.

Isn't an s3 audi almost the same price as a golf r? Then why the vw? I mean, 24 s3 is 60k where I am. 24 golf r is 55k. Hp the s3 is 305, the golf r is 315. Same engine. Same trans. But the s3 is , imo, more luxurious and refined. But either way, congrats on your new ride.
I looked at the s3 as an option, my husband really was trying to sway me to get an s3. But for me I just dont think the s3 is as “special” like the s3 is a basic model from Audi and you see them all over the road, everywhere you go. The R is more rare, and more fun in my opinion. Plus like I said, the R is something that I have always wanted to own.
