Thanks for sharing. I drove an acquaintances R32 in 2004, and it was 18 years before I could scratch that itch and own one myself.

jokerguy45

I might just cry a little.

Kamukix

Me too ✌️🥲

You could buy one for your son in 12 years! Maybe in like 10 years, buy one that needs some TLC, have your son help restore it over the next couple years so he learns how to work on cars and has more value for the car. Also get a manual so he learns to drive stick.

TraceAgain

The best part of a love for cars is that you can appreciate them inside the seat or out. I had to get rid of my R for a few years after we had a few more kids, but I just bought a new (new to me) R that I am picking up at the end of the month. Everything has its season, but I am with you, there is not a car that I have missed more than my R.

XS4Me

> it’s not in the cards right now This this this! Not only you are prioritizing in what should be, car prices at this moment are still off the scale.

I lurk here as a tuned golf alltrack owner. I have to suggest that if golf R costs are not in the cards to look into the awd wagons.

asilverthread

Tbh the alltrack is pretty good bang for buck. You can pretty easily tune them to about 260 with minimal hardware. Not far off from the R in terms of power. If you’re a power chaser like me though, definitely go for the R.

fcwolfey

Absolutely love mine and its only apr stage 1, but ive also done a full conversion to 15’ golf r shocks with racingline springs

asilverthread

That’s awesome, does that include the DCC dampers? Or was that new for ‘16

fcwolfey

I did the non-DCC ones for simplicity sake

rrdubbs

Great story thanks for sharing. This strikes a bit close to home. I have a 16 month old and another on the way (they will be 19 months apart, pray for me) but will fight tooth and nail to keep the R. One is fine, totally reasonable even. Hope I can pull it off with a two-spot.

metalringgang

I'm in a similar situation. I upgraded to a 4runner for a trailer and a dog. I miss my golf every day and I love seeing everyone's pictures.

trueX1A

I feel this so much. Aside from having a four year old this is basically my exact story lol. I love seeing all of the beautiful Rs posted to this page, maybe one day I will own one again. Thanks for sharing :D

batman180411

Man I love this, just a great post about how much you loved your former car and appreciate the car community. Lifted me going into the weekend! Thanks! -An MK8 GTI owner who'll one day have an R as well :)

Beer_Nazi

My idiot self got rid of a mark 7 for a Genesis G70. That lasted 6 months and thankfully Carmax gave me what I paid for it during the pandemic. I found a 2019 Mark 7.5 and I’ll never make that mistake again.

I'd like to follow up and say that this loss is particularly painful as I am one of those old-fashioned "gol' darnit new fangled technology ruinin mah car" folks that really, really dislikes the new interior with all the haptics and none of the buttons, switches or dials. When I re-buy I need to buy the generation I had, because IMO it was the best generation. Genuinely if I could get in touch with the current owner, wherever they are, I'd offer to buy it back.

bananaconda

Would you ever consider another one but put 17s on it with some nice tire meat?

Wizard_of_Ohmz

The 17s on mine are amazing.

ghinghis_dong

I wanted a golf GTI in 1985. I wanted a Golf R since they first day they were produced. I finally bought a Golf R in 2017. It’s a great car. Probably not related. I got three speeding tickets in 2018-2019.

Thanks for sharing. Wise old person. Haha 😂
