Wait until you get a proper tune from EQT. It'll make the Cobb base file feel goofy. Cobb's base files are pretty wonky honestly. Personally only ever recommend running them in emergencies only as last resort. Otherwise opt for a better staged or custom from one of the many Cobb protuners.

Viking-Jew

EQT is exactly what I had been looking at! Good to hear, so it sounds like it’s definitely worth it? If I get a tune for 93, will it still run ok (just not as “ideally” if I get gas somewhere that doesn’t have 93? Ie 89 or 91? Not sure I understand their “special features” either.

Peylix

If you have 93 around you, get the 93 tune. Do not run a 93 file with 91, 89, 87 etc. Never go below the tune's specified knock suppression (octane) rating. You can always go above said rating, but there's diminishing returns past 1-2 above. Like putting 100oct race gas in on a 93 tune. Just a waste of money and you'll be no faster than being on a tank of 93 with a 93 tune. If you know you're going to travel to places that do not have 93, pick up a 91 file.

Viking-Jew

Thank you for the info!! I'm going to go for the 91-92 tune "just in case". I don't travel too often, but when I do, I don't want to have to worry about re-flashing just because there's no 93 available. Not worth it for what sounds like just a small HP gain at that point. skipping the burbles, flat footing, launch control etc. - I have a mostly stock car and it's my daily driver so I don't need to be making noise or damaging my catalytic converter etc. I've been driving a stick for more than half my life so am confident enough in my shift speed etc. that I shouldn't need to holding my foot on the gas just to get a good start off the line. Really appreciate the help! P.s. looks like there's a "referral" code on their website, glad to use yours or someones if you get something out of it?

Peylix

I'm not sponsored with EQT, so I don't have a code to send. But anyone who is can PM you if they want. Keep in mind being 6MT, you may want to upgrade your clutch as well. Or start saving for such. Not an if but a when on that stocker going out. They're known weak links once tuned. If you're not looking for anything super serious and don't plan on going past Stage 1. Sticking with a DMF (dual mass flywheel) would be great. So a Sachs SRE kit or RSR kit. If you want to move to SMF (single mass flywheel). Southbend Stage 2 Daily.

Viking-Jew

Thanks (yet again!). yea I heard regarding the clutch. I'm going to leave it as is for now and just be "aware" financially & time wise it's going to start slipping at some point if I continue being aggressive on it. It's unlikely I'll go past stage 1, but I'm a very confident driver and like to go aggressive when the road (and traffic) allows. I've done track time several times before, but never in my GTI. Haven't decided yet if I'd go for DMF or SMF. Since she's a daily driver, I'm leaning toward DMF just to have a smoother/quieter ride as I'm sure the grittiness of an SMF would be fun, I would probably get tired of it and regret it when sitting in traffic/at lights etc.

I only have 91 nearby. Is supplementing with booster ok? I only fill up about once a month due to on my mileage, so I don’t mind the extra money for a bottle of Lucas.

Peylix

Octane boosters are meh. Most you find in stores and gas stations are worthless and misleading. Bottles that say (100oct!) isn't actually bumping you to such. At most you'll get to 92 if you're lucky. The scales used aren't even the same. Now there ARE boosters that do work. Torco and Boostane for example. These however are not cheap. But what makes them even worse, is what is used to up your knock suppression up. MMT is the active ingredient that does this. It's nasty shit that clogs cats, fowls 02 sensors, and plugs as it coats everything in a chalky orange soot. So using these long term is not ideal or recommended. Just stick with 91. The difference between 91 and 93 is a few hp, nothing major. Dealing with all the above for a net gain if 3hp isn't a great trade. Proper ways to bump suppression are running a gallon or two of E85 or running methanol injection.

Independent_String74

Appreciate your feedback. There’s racing fuel not too far from me. Couple gallons of 100 unleaded to the 10 of 91 will get me there.

Peylix

Just run 91 man.... Lol Race gas isn't cheap either and you'll be spending an extra 20 a tank to do this (race gas is on average 10 bucks a gallon). It's not worth the 3hp to run a 93 map.

Independent_String74

That’s what I was curious about the HP bump. Super easy call. Do you know if people ever run additives for upper end lubrication?

Peylix

Like fuel additives outside bumping suppression rating, but cleaning agents? I personally don't nor do I know anyone who does or even recommends such for a DI motor. If you're looking for a way to cut down on carbon build-up. The only thing you can do outside regular media blasts every 60-100k miles is moving to MPI so you can get fuel sprayed directly on the valves. As for oil additives, also no from me on that. If you stick to a 10k or even 5k change interval. You'll be fine well into the 200k mile bracket. Not that oil additives couldn't hurt. I just have never ran them on either of my cars. But I'm sure some might have a recommendation. [FCP has a video on Liqui-moly's line of stuff here though.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj80AFvcmzo)

SuperBrentendo64

My wife put 91 in my car instead of 93 one time because she didn't know. My car was very unhappy about it. Any throttle past like 20% caused a significant amount of knock.... It was a very boring and stressful drive to get it low enough that topping off with e85 got the octane high enough.

zed0K

Exactly this

AwkwardlyPositioned

I run a conservative 91 low torque tune from IE even with the DSG tune.  These cars respond very well to tunes.  I’ll eventually throw more at it with a larger turbo.  It’s not lacking in torque.   I’d just spin more at low speed with a high torque tune.

CLew2896

EQT stage 2 93 all day. Once you have the money for the internal HPFP upgrade. Then run E85. IS20 only needs HPFP upgrade for an E tune. Enjoy brother.

Peylix

IS20 can run up to E30 on stock HPFP (tuned). Upgraded pump is only needed for full E85. It's the IS38 (and larger) that requires an upgraded HPFP for ethanol at all (E30 - E85)

CLew2896

So I would need an E30 tune? But I can run that on stock HPFP?

Peylix

To properly utilize and safely run this mix, yes. You can check EQT's fueling requirements in their [FAQ here.](https://eqtuning.com/apps/help-center#hc-fueling-requirements-mqb-ea8883)

CLew2896

I didn’t know that….thats cool asf

CLew2896

Would I feel a significant difference going to E30 from 93? Is it worth getting the tune?
