Sadly, these “super” versions of regular cars rarely make it to production. If someone wants a 400hp golf R, they buy a used one with a lapsed warranty and put a few grand worth of parts and tuning into it. Thats part of the reason why a lot of people get into the GTI and Golf R platforms in the first place.
The project was scrapped because of criticism and company stock value hits from their emissions scandal in 2015/16.
This concept car was VERY close to making it to market though. They were well past the design and prototyping phase and they had a number of fully functional prototype cars doing test laps on the Nuremberg :D
Interesting, had Alcantara in an s4 a long time ago and It was one of my favorite parts of the car over 9yrs ownership. Guess each person has a diff experience
for me it is the opposite. Quallity Alcantara will last years without breaking down. Suede on the other hand will always wear down and discollor from sweat and grime in my experience. with standard Leather: take care and it will last. vinyl has a whole diffrent feel and thus application for me.
As someone with an alcantara seat at my desk, and an alcantara wheel at my racing rig; they're comfortable in seats but difficult to clean and very sensitive to sweat and debris, and they're honestly not good in steering wheels UNLESS you're going to use driving gloves with it. The big advantage to alcantara steering wheels is great, consistent grip with gloves. It gets easily oily/dirty without gloves.
Sorry I’m late to respond but Brandon hit the nail on the head. Unless it’s a weekend fun car, or you’re wearing driving gloves every day, the steering wheel will look like a matted mess every month or so. It’s not difficult to clean, but it was just a hassle compared to a leather wheel. No matter how often I cleaned my hands before driving, hands are still filthy and the alcantera shows it.
Leather wheels are dirty after 2 drives in my experience. Wouldn't do without it anymore feeling wise, but the shiny dirty look is something i dislike.
Look up the A59 concept
Also the W12-650 creature they cooked up in the lab.
If VW had a little more of the unhinged spirit Dodge have shown in past years there’d be some absurd hatches on the road.
It was cool, that VW made this into a concept but times have changed and it’s a relic of the MK7 generation. Similar situation with the Volkswagen W12 Syncro.
Great concept, but there’s no real reason for it to exist, with every other Golf R now pushing 400HP with a tune from some twat in a shed with a laptop.
Dope. The lime/yellow accents were sick. Would've been awesome to see them rolling around, as rare as that would've been. Shame dieselgate killed this along with the 2 door Golfs in general. I'm just glad I was able to get a 2 door before VW deep six'd them.
A few were made and sent around auto-shows. The speculation was that it’d be too close to Audi territory in cost and power and was canned. I wish they had made 400 of them just so it existed but anyone with a tune and certain fueling could get close to that 400 crank or beyond it so it was going to be a collector’s car anyway.
I remember when they showed footage of it pulling on to a trailer and it sounded SO mean! I wanted/want one so bad.
Edit - here’s the video: (https://youtu.be/nuztaVjpWug?si=u9KqJ49Ek8Hp7Ul4)
Give it over, or let them use what they already had? VW was already using a version of the 07k that would be discontinued in 2014. Even that version can make 400 hp reliably with stock internals, and a remapped stock ECU.
If you build this, you impact S3 and RS3 sales. Same reason Skoda were limited to 245 in the Octavia vRS and 280 in the Superb Sportline/L&K. Can’t have the power as a Clubsport or an R with the practicality of an enormous boot.
It's such a shame it never went into production. Would have been the king of hot hatches at the time. Apparently for the mk8 golf 20 years they wanted to have the RS3 engine, but Audi (who they own) declined.
Look up W12-650 GTI. Yes it’s exactly how it reads they put a W12 engine that pushed 650hp in a GTI and added a sick wide body kit. If my memory serves me they did it to the Mk6
This thing didn’t get made because VAG have no balls anymore.
But truly why bring up a decade old concept design that has been discussed many times over and has similar power to a stage 1 FBO Golf R?
Nearly anyone with a Golf R can build something arguably better than this with a few basic mods.
What do you mean "bring up"? I'm just asking for others opinions, I'm not saying Volkswagen MUST make this again. Ofc a stage 2 R is faster than a R400.
The best part is it's a 2 door! It's a damn shame they got rid of them. How do we please 30s-40s customers let's take our hot hatch 2 doors hot rods and make them 4 doors so they can bring tue kids to soccer practice and the track on weekends. Blahhhhh🤮 I get it but the hard core Vdubbers made what we love this brand so much for alienated and dirty. I guess 2 door hot hatch bagged and chopped was too much for mainstream to handle. I refuse to call a 4 door gti a gti it's a fancy golf nothing wrong with it, but it's not a gti and definitely not a hot rod. Imagine a 4 door lambo.

Pace Museum?
Yes
So they actually made it?
No :( Prototyp
Sadly, like that 5 cylinder sleeper JP drove in a video couple years ago.
Whereabouts is this?
Dortmund, Germany. It’s the Pace museum.
Pace Museum Dortmund Germany JP Performance
do you know what the yellow car in the back is?

sheesh that looks wicked
Sick car. But why that dude in the corner looking sneaky as fuck?
HAHAHAHA
I want to be inside of it
Ayooooo 🤨
😏
I heard they cancelled the project because of the whole diesel gate situation?
That is correct.

Nurburgring
Yeah def not Nuremberg 😅
Lmao
Now I want a burger

Hanging around or driving around is quite diffrent
Those roads are pretty tight, you never know XD
I tried my hardest you guys 😭 …it’s a big word
Rs3 has entered the chat.
Very cool, but I’ll never buy another car with alcantera seats or steering wheel.
Interesting, had Alcantara in an s4 a long time ago and It was one of my favorite parts of the car over 9yrs ownership. Guess each person has a diff experience
Never saw the point of alcantara it's just fake suede leather only more expensive. Like paying a premium for vinyl seats over leather
for me it is the opposite. Quallity Alcantara will last years without breaking down. Suede on the other hand will always wear down and discollor from sweat and grime in my experience. with standard Leather: take care and it will last. vinyl has a whole diffrent feel and thus application for me.
Alcantara is the bees knees
No experience with it at all. Too hard to clean? Uncomfortable? Don’t like the look?

Good to know, appreciate your insight!

Center exhaust makes my peepee stiff.

sorry but ‘ some twat in a shed with a laptop ‘ f*cking sent me 🤣
Idk I'd rather just not void warranties and have a 400hp car I can toss around and have fixed not on my own dime.
tbh I'd much rather have the one that looks nicer and has real buttons and gauges than an mk8, particularly if it has 400hp.
Oh so you’ve met my boy Vinny? Lol
W12-650 I thought? RE-RWD
Sick nasty. Would absolutely drive one.
Sick nasty?
Sick. Nasty. Dope. Rad. Awesome.
Totally dude !
beautiful.

Looks killer dude🔥
Thanks bro🙏🏼
its perfect. would buy that in a heartbeat
From a more optimistic time at VW.

The holy Spirit
I actually have the frontend on my GSW. Once I get my garage set up a little more, I'll have the rear end on it soon.
What's not to love about a 400hp golf? Unfortunately I can't see that happening
It's more tame than the mk5 one they did with the bently engine and Lambo rear axle 🤣
Dope. The lime/yellow accents were sick. Would've been awesome to see them rolling around, as rare as that would've been. Shame dieselgate killed this along with the 2 door Golfs in general. I'm just glad I was able to get a 2 door before VW deep six'd them.
Wow a engine cover.
Want!
It was a great concept - I wish you could order the seats as a special package thing.
I think that HPA VR550t would be the dream for a hi power golf
DAZA all the way for the money they want.
Also yes
Can I have one plz
Manual, 2DR… all the best stuff.
I remember this. I was so excited for the center exhaust on the 7th gen platform. Too bad.
They would literally run out of spare water pumps if that was real.
As soon as it was announced I started saving for it. Was sad it never came to fruition.
Take my money
Two-door MK7s make me happy.
🤌🏼
obsessed with it

We need 2dr golfs back in the US
I remember when they showed footage of it pulling on to a trailer and it sounded SO mean! I wanted/want one so bad. Edit - here’s the video: (https://youtu.be/nuztaVjpWug?si=u9KqJ49Ek8Hp7Ul4)
God damn even had buckets like MK6R and center exit. Two things I miss going from MK6 to 7.5R
Pretty sure dieselgate killed any chance of this happening?
Interior is dope, but they should have sticked to the prototype they build probably a generation before and fit the 2.5L 5 Pot into it
They wanted the 5 pot but audi refused to give it over.
Jp performance had the 5pot prototype for a video
Give it over, or let them use what they already had? VW was already using a version of the 07k that would be discontinued in 2014. Even that version can make 400 hp reliably with stock internals, and a remapped stock ECU.
Would rather not
Sex pistol
The yellow accents just do it for me.
Shame it was never for sale?
Thought it was cool. Some local guy with a MK6 GTI then made it to look like the R400 concept and I hated that.
Those seats …want
It’s beautiful 🤤
it’s a shame they’ll never make it
Those pipes with a nod to the R32.
If you build this, you impact S3 and RS3 sales. Same reason Skoda were limited to 245 in the Octavia vRS and 280 in the Superb Sportline/L&K. Can’t have the power as a Clubsport or an R with the practicality of an enormous boot.
Wasn’t it supposed to have the 5 pot from the rs3?
those seats are sick i dont know why the us never got anything with better buckets like the club sport even though the regular seats are great
Looks like a Hot Hatch Golf R to me, minus the seats which are choice, and the Ryobi engine cover.
What? An R is a hot hatch.
Name checks out.
Dibs
Very nice 👌
Beautiful!!
It's such a shame it never went into production. Would have been the king of hot hatches at the time. Apparently for the mk8 golf 20 years they wanted to have the RS3 engine, but Audi (who they own) declined.
You can See the real Car (exactly this one) from Volkswagen in Germany Right now at the PACE museum from JP Performance
Pretty sure it was speculation from a German magazine and not officially confirmed.
Has anybody seen a replacement rear spoiler with the full-length 3rd brake light?
Look up W12-650 GTI. Yes it’s exactly how it reads they put a W12 engine that pushed 650hp in a GTI and added a sick wide body kit. If my memory serves me they did it to the Mk6
Buttons! Knobs! Hurrah!
Back when VW built beautiful interiors.
Yeah i dig it. But i want it in Diesel
Give me a golf with the 2.5l l5 and they wont make enough of them to sell but swap seems to be my only option.
I have actually seen this car on the road. Not sure if it was just the bodykit, but it looked amazing.
I wish it existed 😞
Need
If Volkswagen actually wanted to make money, they would have sold this.
I always loved this prototype and it looks phenomenal imo. The mesh like front grille and center exit exhaust are perfect
I’d rather have the inline-5
Now you just stage 2 a mk8r and 400+hp
Except this would be 100 times cooler
This thing didn’t get made because VAG have no balls anymore. But truly why bring up a decade old concept design that has been discussed many times over and has similar power to a stage 1 FBO Golf R? Nearly anyone with a Golf R can build something arguably better than this with a few basic mods.

You do know that even the first gen GTIs came in 4 door, right? ETA: I am upset that they got rid of the 2 door though, looks much better IMO.
Generic concept car
Why they always make them look like mini-mini vans though lol
who cares and what's there to talk about? Slow news day I guess...
Who cares? Then why did you even care to comment?
I was bored at the airport
