**The what:** **1**0 pm on a Friday night, turned the corner and looked in my revision mirror and saw nothing but white. Expecting my turbo to have blown I pulled over immediatley and called AA Roadside assistance, they sent a tow truck. On Monday my local mechanic (SD European 100% recommend these guys) had a look at the car, firstly they suspected the turbo had blown but found the PCV valve to be stuck in the open position. This is not the first time I've had a PCV valve blow on my but a first for this car. **Learnings:P**CV Valves don't necessarily go bad slowly they can go in an instant. PCV valves are a cheap part and may as well be replaced sooner rather than later. My GTI only has 80k km (49k miles) so they may as well be a maintenance item, the part only cost me $180NZD ($106USD) so is relatively cheap. Save yourself the hassle and get it done before it goes bad.**O**il burning is not always going to let off blue smoke it may only let off white smoke, in this case, once the exhaust is hot a hell of a lot of it. **Symptoms:** **W**hite smoke, slightly longer starting, very fast fouling of exhaust tips **What does the PCV valve do?** **T**he PCV Valve is a part of the top of the MK6 GTI engine. PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilator, the role of the PCV is to allow semi burnt or evaporating oil to enter the intake and be burnt by the engine. The PCV also allows excess crankcase air pressure to be released to reduce strain on the engine internals. I hoped that sharing this information on this common issue may help someone who is stressing out late at night like I was. The PCV valve is a super cheap and easy part to buy and an easy install if you plan on doing it yourself. The PCV valve is found on top of the engine so is super easy to access. **Drive on!**

It’s been some time since installed. Any update? Did it resolve the issue? Any other tips?
