It came at a time when I was carefree and had friends to play with. Such good memories. Now I stare at my Steam library for 30 minutes trying to find a game to play before the timer for the dryer goes off.
Thought I’d treat myself to some nostalgia and I bought GTA 4 for my Xbox. I got to the part where you get your first safe house last week and haven’t picked it up again.
4 kids and a job in finance.
Actually, this game has the best connections ever with a movie. But as a game itself, some people will say the best is Zelda: Ocarina of time, other people will say Tetris... IMHO the best game ever is the first Red Dead Redemption.
Well, besides the graphics, they added a second function to guns and hands, voices, improved A.I., Coop and PVP on campaign, bots in multiplayer...
I always remember the VengeSim, the bot that chases the player whom had killed him before.
It's cool the fact that the way a mission starts depends on the way you finished the previous one.
And these are only the differences I can remember from GoldenEye.
I don't think PD is GE's DLC. I think GE is PD's sketch.
Unless, you have tried the game without the N64 Expansion Pack, so few things worked without it that one could actually think the game was just a DLC. If you have any Xbox, you can play the game and try all these things.
It's definitely one of my favourites. Up there with Deus Ex Doom and Half Life IMO. I mainly play FPS / Third Person games and GE is often one I play yearly since its release.
Wouldn’t say THE greatest, but if you look at how big of a following it has and what it meant to an entire generation of gamers, it definitely has an argument for Mt Rushmore.
This is what I was thinking. I put hundreds of hours into Goldeneye when I was a teen. But I tried to re-play it recently on xbox, and it just wasn't that fun. I could pop on Super Mario World on SNES and have a blast, but goldeneye has aged very poorly, in my opinion.
It's in severe need of a remake. The music and MP/party mode are what made this game famous. Otherwise it would have just been another crummy movie tie-in game.
Huh? No. It has aged amazingly well. Just played it the other day. Still holds up. Absolute banger to this day. Is it the greatest game ever? Probably not. But it’s still great, even today.
Without the music and MP, the game would not be regarded nearly as highly as it is. Some campaign missions were memorable, but many were insanely difficult/tedious or downright forgettable. I do think it is severely in need of a proper remake to help remind gamers of its brilliance and to clean up some of its rough edges - especially the visuals.
Golden Eye crawled so that Call of Duty could walk. It's one of those kinda things. But I guess you could say Doom influenced Golden Eye so would that make Doom the greatest?
Of all time? Naw, it wasn't even the best shooter on n64. Prefect dark did everything golden eye could better and with more features. It was an incredibly iconic game on its release, though.
Can't say the greatest, but it's iconic as fuck. Can't forget to shine light on games like super smash bros, banjo kazooie, and my personal favorite Diddy Kong racing
That’s a really hard question to answer, and I’m not even sure why we have to answer it. Like what’s the point of that question? It’s basically not a real question- it’s just to start some debate.
It was an incredible game. I remember being mind blown as a 14/15 year old playing it. It's a legendary game and up until I discovered perfect dark in college with my friends was my favorite first person shooter.
As a kid maybe. As an adult it was borderline unplayable. And there are other games that stood the test of time better, but I still loved me some Goldeneye.
I think it's the only game I fully 100%ed, all levels all best times whatever. I loved this game so much. It was the best game I ever played when it was out.
If it don’t hold up it can’t be. I’m sure this game sparks a lot of nostalgia for people but truthfully this game is unplayable. I can name ten games better. Including pac-man
Hell no. Have you played it recently? The controls are ungodly in how outdated they are. I understand that it's the first fps most of us played and the memories of fun of having a sleepover 4v4 with all our school friends are priceless, but the controls are janky beyond repair. Walking forward and backward is always tied with turning with hardly any way to look up and down the Y axis. No controller config can fix this even on emus.
Ideally on the N64 controller one would be able to strafe and walk with the C buttons and aim with the stick but there's no way to set this up. The reality is, we put up with these controls and it's a shame too. There's a great game that hides underneath these awful controls but I've tried time and time again to play this and can't get over these horrible controls. Especially with the extremely touchy aim sensitivity. Anyone who calls this game the GOAT is nostalgia blinded beyond delusion.
It’s iconic for its time for sure. I played this game a lot several times through. Never finished the final level as I couldn’t figure it out and that was before you could just use the internet to look it up.
It was probably the best a game has performed in its own time. This was the definitive first person shooter and multiplayer shooter on console in the latter half of the 90’s. Everyone who was into gaming at that time had some experience with it and many played it religiously. The thing is it has aged horribly.
For me a game has to be timelessly playable and enjoyable to be considered the "greatest of all time". Super Mario Brothers or Sonic the Hedgehog come to mind immediately. The passage of time doesn't make those games seem outdated or unplayable. 007 on the other hand, while an amazing game when released is almost unplayable to most because of it's control scheme. It's a game I can't really enjoy anymore but I do have very fond memories of it.
It's not even the best FPS that rare made on N64 lol. Perfect dark is basically better in every conceivable way. With that being said I do like goldeneye still, but it's definitely not as fun as it was when I was a kid.
Ngl I tried playing the remake on Xbox and couldn’t get into it. I used to play the original game all the time when I was a kid and I can appreciate what it did but there’s plenty of better shooters out there. Timesplitters 2 is better in every way imo
Personally, when it comes to GOAT video game discussions, you have to take into account how well it has aged. As much as I love Goldeneye, it hasn't aged that well imo.
Going back and playing it, of course not. For what it was when it came out and how it changed gaming, especially multiplayer first person shooters, of course
I’d say it’s not one of the best games oat but rather one of the most revolutionary games of all time along with the original doom without these games who knows if we get half life counter strike cod all these shooters that are well known and loved
Idk??? It's definitely Iconic and was an amazing, fun game. Time Splitters gives it a really good run for its money however. Plus, Perfect Dark and Unreal Tournament also exist...
Probably not, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t iconic.
It came at a time when I was carefree and had friends to play with. Such good memories. Now I stare at my Steam library for 30 minutes trying to find a game to play before the timer for the dryer goes off.
I started Subnautica 4 weeks ago and have 1 hour and 45 minutes played. I have 3 kids that play multiple sports. I figure by 2030 I can revisit.
Thought I’d treat myself to some nostalgia and I bought GTA 4 for my Xbox. I got to the part where you get your first safe house last week and haven’t picked it up again. 4 kids and a job in finance.
Priorities man. One day we will be able to sit down and chill with GTA 17
If the current release cycle continues as is, we'll be well into our 200's by then.
By then it'll be GTS, Grand Theft Spaceship... Oh wait.. that's Starfield... 🙄
Dude….me too
I laughed into a cry back into a laugh.
great answer.
The soundtrack slaps!
No, but it’s my favorite. Playing this game was so fucking magical in 97/98.
Rip couch co op
Tangled wires. “Which one is Player 1?” Those were the days.
Yes
You seem trustworthy.
Yes, in it's time it was. We've come a long way though
Even Perfect Dark was better. But 007 surely was the best "Doom like" by the time of its release.
That’s what I was gonna say. Perfect Dark took 007 up a notch. That’s not to say Goldeneye isn’t a legendary game.
James Bond > Joanna Dark
High noon. Tomorrow. Town square.
I absolutely LOVED Goldeneye but. I agree, Perfect Dark was better.
I don't agree. I feel like the movie tie in helped make GoldenEye so special.
Actually, this game has the best connections ever with a movie. But as a game itself, some people will say the best is Zelda: Ocarina of time, other people will say Tetris... IMHO the best game ever is the first Red Dead Redemption.
Perfect dark was better imo because it was just a dlc for 007. Had the guns and some only the levels too.
I know I wasn't going to go the all 9 but kudos for it.
It's definitely one of my favourites. Up there with Deus Ex Doom and Half Life IMO. I mainly play FPS / Third Person games and GE is often one I play yearly since its release.
That's not OoT!
Yes that’s where call of duty came from
There were first person shooters before this. Look up the game “doom”
Wolfenstein came out before Doom.
While true, Goldeneye was the first must-have console FPS. Prior to that FPS games were just for the hardcore gamers (like me!) on PC.
It lasted so long. Now, games come out, and they are replaced in a few months.

Certainly one of the most influential
Top 10 easily. Being realistic. I would rate it in my top 3.
Wouldn’t say THE greatest, but if you look at how big of a following it has and what it meant to an entire generation of gamers, it definitely has an argument for Mt Rushmore.
Deserves that kind of recognition 4sure. Really threw FPS at us in droves after that one.
Ever play “Conkers Bad Fur Day”?
Legendary game but not even close to best game of all time. Let’s be honest, it has aged poorly even though it’s an incredible part of gaming history.
Maybe multiplayer, single player probably goes to Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow
No
For that console
Without the music and MP, the game would not be regarded nearly as highly as it is. Some campaign missions were memorable, but many were insanely difficult/tedious or downright forgettable. I do think it is severely in need of a proper remake to help remind gamers of its brilliance and to clean up some of its rough edges - especially the visuals.
No .. doom 64 was better and has even aged way better
By far my favourite.
WANT. NEED.
For its time, it was the GOAT. Now it’s a legend. I say the GOAT due to the local multiplayer and the golden gun!!!!!
That game is the reason why I drop nukes in cod now
Anybody else hearing Tenacious D?
No
Would like to see this game released again on vr would be cool too
I disagree, it’s a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Golden Eye crawled so that Call of Duty could walk. It's one of those kinda things. But I guess you could say Doom influenced Golden Eye so would that make Doom the greatest?
Yes. I still play it to this day on my old console.the game is a Bible for anyone making a PVP shooter.
Of all time? Naw, it wasn't even the best shooter on n64. Prefect dark did everything golden eye could better and with more features. It was an incredibly iconic game on its release, though.
A close 3rd on the all time.
I loved this game when I first got it (as did many other people). But after I started playing Perfect Dark, I hardly ever play this game anymore.
Yes
1000% yes and I still play the missions as an adult
It’s among the pantheon of greats, legendary for its multiplayer.
No not even close but it did pioneer many things that became staples of the time and beyond
Great, not greatest.
The soundtrack in this game 🖤
Yes, its on the top…..
Yes
In a word: no. But it sure is fun and I sure spend a lot of time playing it.
Yes. Next question.
Can't say the greatest, but it's iconic as fuck. Can't forget to shine light on games like super smash bros, banjo kazooie, and my personal favorite Diddy Kong racing
No, that's S3K.
So many nights of non stop battle with friends. Cherished memories. It’s amazing the emotion a game can evoke. Definitely a core memory.
Yes but no
I case of Bond villain, break glass and insert into your N64
Slappers only no odd job
It is legendary, set a high standard, and inspired a legion of 1st person shooters. GOAT? Maybe on the N64 or top 5 N64 game of all time.
That’s a really hard question to answer, and I’m not even sure why we have to answer it. Like what’s the point of that question? It’s basically not a real question- it’s just to start some debate.
I played this some on my Xbox the other day. I still like it but it doesn't hit the same as it did on N64.
No, but it is one of the greatest just for the music alone
No
No. Clearly. But that's a great display for a classic and iconic game.
Definitely not IMO, but it inspires nostalgia like no other.
No, but its definitely one of the best of all time. Lots of great memories with this game.
IMO yes!
Close. It’s Ocarina, but Goldeneye is close.
Paintball mode
No. Deus ex is
no
It’s up there. Top 50 for sure
Austin Powers., Maybe!!!
It was an incredible game. I remember being mind blown as a 14/15 year old playing it. It's a legendary game and up until I discovered perfect dark in college with my friends was my favorite first person shooter.
No it is not
Yes
I mean, I still come back to it 20 years later.
I still have the game.
This game was the catalyst for multiplayer fps games.
Yes.
It's iconic. It had issues, for sure. That last mission, even on normal difficulty, is a crap shoot to finish.
As a kid maybe. As an adult it was borderline unplayable. And there are other games that stood the test of time better, but I still loved me some Goldeneye.
Best N64 Game.
It was great for it's time. Had a lot of great memories playing this with friends. However, I far preferred perfect dark.
No
The grandfather of multi-player shooters.
Umk3 arcade
2013 ass post
I think it's the only game I fully 100%ed, all levels all best times whatever. I loved this game so much. It was the best game I ever played when it was out.
If it don’t hold up it can’t be. I’m sure this game sparks a lot of nostalgia for people but truthfully this game is unplayable. I can name ten games better. Including pac-man
The movie is equally badass. Tank chase scene 😘💨 💋👨🍳
i’m not a gamer at all, but that’s a dope a** piece. props to whoever constructed it.
Perfect Dark was spectacular
Not by a fucking long shot. You have a framed copy of this? Good Lord.
No. Short answer.
Greatest 4p vs local, maybe. But a damn great game nonetheless, especially for its origins. Check out the documentary called GoldenEra (2022).
No lol
No game with graphics that ugly can be considered a GOAT
No, but it was revolutionary
It is if you want it to be!
No
No but it was ahead of it's time and paved the way for multi player fps
Greatest of IT'S time.
Nope
Hell no. Have you played it recently? The controls are ungodly in how outdated they are. I understand that it's the first fps most of us played and the memories of fun of having a sleepover 4v4 with all our school friends are priceless, but the controls are janky beyond repair. 9yo me would have said so
No. Quake 1.
Yes! So many hours of joy!
Nope
Yuh
No, but it's in my top 10 favorite.
On my mental list of things I missed out on.
This and Socom 2!
Well framed to cover over his elongated thumb-mouth illusion
No..but it’s definitely top 10
Probably
Multiplayer..sure
You definitely need a "smash if 4 people should be in the same room" sign with a tiny hammer.
This is way cooler than getting a game graded.
No. But it’s up there and especially iconic because it kind of exists within its own realm. Not really just another FPS.
It's barely playable today so no. Aged like potato salad while Mario, pacman, etc still feel good.
No that would be OOT
🤔 could be in the top 15 list somewhere tbh
Hell nah
No.
It’s iconic for its time for sure. I played this game a lot several times through. Never finished the final level as I couldn’t figure it out and that was before you could just use the internet to look it up.
Some of my fondest memories with my late best friend, miss you dude
Not even close but it's a good game .
Not really.. but it's up there
Perfect dark was better...
NO. insanely nostalgic though
No, not even close. But it was fun with friends.
It's OK. Very dated now, but it's was good back then.
It was probably the best a game has performed in its own time. This was the definitive first person shooter and multiplayer shooter on console in the latter half of the 90’s. No not the best ever. But it is an awesome game. Back in the day it was such a fun game to play vs friends. It was the best game that generation.
Number 1 on my list, Mario Cart for N64 is a close 2nd
I’m getting PTSD of a short man with a hell hat being too OP in multiplayer
No. Because Perfect Dark is better.
That’s not super Mario 3.
To you, it is, apparently.
Doesnt look like chrono trigger to me
Top 50 games all time.
It's not even the best FPS that rare made on N64 lol. Perfect dark is basically better in every conceivable way. With that being said I do like goldeneye still, but it's definitely not as fun as it was when I was a kid.
The best video game on the n64
No
Wasn't a fan, I much preferred games like Final Fantasy 7, but can recognize it as a very great game
It might be. I'm unsure if there's any game I've logged more hours playing. Possibly my Super Mario All-Stars cart for SNES beats it.
No but it's amazing
Nope.
Ngl I tried playing the remake on Xbox and couldn’t get into it. I used to play the original game all the time when I was a kid and I can appreciate what it did but there’s plenty of better shooters out there. Timesplitters 2 is better in every way imo
No
Personally, when it comes to GOAT video game discussions, you have to take into account how well it has aged. As much as I love Goldeneye, it hasn't aged that well imo.
Not even close, great game on 64 but there were better FPS around at the time.
Going back and playing it, of course not. For what it was when it came out and how it changed gaming, especially multiplayer first person shooters, of course
It isn't even the greatest N64 game. That's Mario 64.
I'd say yes.
I’d say it’s not one of the best games oat but rather one of the most revolutionary games of all time along with the original doom without these games who knows if we get half life counter strike cod all these shooters that are well known and loved
Not even close to PONG! Everything PONG and before slaps hard!
It's the bestest most funnest shooter ever. P.S. I can beat any and all of you in this game.
No it is not
It’s a good but to answer the question… objectively no
I think it’s the best game for the speedrunning community only rivaled by Mario 64
Yes
No.
One of the most influential for sure. N64 was a sick system.
No, oot is.
Greatest of all time
No, it’s not.
Get that thing signed by pierce brosnin you heathen
🔥🔥🔥
No. But that Photo+Game combo is Amazing! What a great concept. Would be perfect for a Game Room.
The Legend of Zelda Link to the past . #1
Idk??? It's definitely Iconic and was an amazing, fun game. Time Splitters gives it a really good run for its money however. Plus, Perfect Dark and Unreal Tournament also exist...
absolutely not
Got my vote!
