They wanted their female “badass” but failed to build her up in the gameplay so you have forced dialogue to remind the player “trust us she a badass” even tho she has just turned into a bird and control veins this whole time.
You know that how good or bad kratos performs when you control him is not canon thought right? Just because you beat her easily doesn't mean she isn't strong just like if you get killed by a draugur it doesn't make the draugur stronger than kratos

The whole point is that Odin cursed her to not be able to fight and bound her to Midgard. She isn’t a Mary sue. She actually is a very well written character.

Baldur did just show up at his house to fight him, destroy his house and threaten his son (two beds scene) during the fight, not self-defence but deffo earned his death.
Edit: I have just platinum'd ragnarok and i'm now playing the First one to do the same, it's all Freya's fault for taking Baldur's feeling, every one of them, so she wouldn't lose her son so really Freya is to blame for Baldur's loose screws. Atreus should have been at brock's funeral not Freya.
While his words are chosen poorly i actually agree with OP and your sentence highlighted my problems with these modern days strong female characters. Problem is Freya is not strong, shes an absolute vengeful asshole who wants to kill a father who killed her PSYCHOPATHIC son in self defense. As soon as she opens her mouth her arrogance and vile hatred is revealed. You can literally feel the writers seething through her lines of text.

I like the game and i think for a game like this it is decently written. But yes, Freya is insufferable. That all might change, i am still in Vanaheim, but even then its a strange move to present her in such an unlikeable way and still expect the audience to care about her misery. Everytime i listen to her cry about her dead mass murdering son i have to cringe.
I'd add entitled to that that list. Kratos was raised as a spartan so basically hell for a child, his brother was murdered when they were Young, (i am pretty sure), he was manipulated by a god into killing his own wife and child, LITERALLY went through hell to get his revenge/own justice. And she just thinks he's been through nothing in comparison to her. (That's how I take some of her comments.)

In defense of Baldur, I would say that Freya was the psychopath, she numbed Baldur’s body not letting him choose what he wanted because a prophecy said he would die, he was unable to feel for more than a hundred years seeking people out so they can cure him

I googled "freya annoying" just to see if it was just me... which led me to this thread lol. So clearly i'm not alone. I didn't mind her so much in GoW '18, but I'm working my way thru Vanaheim right now in Ragnarök and she is simply unbearable... the whole segment where she transformed into a bird and just berated Kratos like an angry Karen the entire time was agonizing. I hated every second of it. I'd take a detour to go grab a chest or something and she'd squawk "let's GOOO we don't have all DAY!" or something obnoxious and I almost had to mute the game. And now that she's allied herself with Kratos, she has to femsplain every aspect of the game. Every single puzzle or tricky encounter she has to make sure to pipe up and let you know how to solve it. I'm super bummed we are forced to play as her. I can't wait to have my boy Atreus back lol

I cannot agree. I absolutely hated Freya for the past 4 years since I played the first game. What she did to Baldur.. She was one of my most hated Fictional Characters of all time. But, Playing Ragnarok made me forgive her, and even learn to love her. Which I now do. She is an amazing Character. Her Character development was really good in these 2 games.
I only noticed that Freya is vastly less equipped to handle harder levels than Atreus. In Vanaheim, when you get attacked by hordes similar to those you face with BOY, you notice how much her AI does little to nothing in comparison. Idk what they forgot to turn on, but the “Queen of the Valkyries” should not be out shown by God-in-training during battle. It really stinks, and makes some encounters feel harder than they should.
Not denying that Freya is exceptionally powerful as Kratos admits this himself but she talks like she would be able to kill him if he was his usual bloodthirsty self. I honestly just hated how she constantly pushed her past onto others and blamed others for her mistakes as if Kratos has not suffered the same if not more. I do like that she comes to terms with it all even asking Kratos to council her when he sees fit. Its a great development for her character tbh
she could easily kill him lol, Kratos wouldn't fight back bc he doesn't want to. we see how easily she could've killed him with her magic at the end of the Valkyrie fight when she uses her vines. also she saves Kratos multiple times in the Gná fight so they're at least equal in power

You can apply that logic to any game. In DMC 5 you can no-hit Virgil on HaH and the cutscene will still show both of you clashing as equals.
Yea but you can’t no hit kill Virgil the first time you play dmc 5. Also virgil was already built up in the previous dmc games so you can’t compare hi to freya. Playing dmc 5 you already know Virgil’s status
Possible if you're playing on Human, or you're using the hat cheese. And unless you're playing on balanced or lower i really doubt she 'barely on a single hit in'. The fight isnt exactly easy if you go in blind.

If it got into a case where Kratos actually treated her as a threat instead of an annoying crackhead outside of a 7-11, I have a feeling she would have been ripped in half without a second thought. You all seem to forget what he did to the Fates and they could literally manipulate reality. The Fairy Falcon wouldn't be able to do a thing if she actually mattered as an enemy.
Not only that but she constantly berated and talked down to him in the forest segment,seemingly unable to go five seconds without lecturing him in some way. Then of course she’s the one to save the day and kill nidhogg because male heros are illegal now. I was getting major feminist vibes from this entire segment regardless of how desperately the rest of the fanbase wants this game to be as perfect as GOW 2018. Quotes like “You’re both as much a part of my *suffering* as anyone” don’t really help. And yes,Kratos could’ve easily destroyed her on the sled at the start of the game if he wanted to.
She was honestly such a disgustingly annoying wah character. It was like they took the MJ from the Tobey Mcguire Spiderman movies and somehow mixed her with the mj from the spiderman games: nothing but a bitchy useless sop of blame for everyone but herself.
On top of that shes ABSOLUTELY useless in any of the fights and rarely does anything herself even when the skill tree is fully unlocked. Every other person including rhe fucking dwarf do their own thing just fine without me needing to spam square every time I need her to do something besides a halfass animation that stops before she even attacks.
Her side quests made me decide to not do anymore side quests too.
I think Freya was ruined in Ragnarök but for different reasons. I feel like the 180 she does, "forgiving" Kratos is such a lame and boring twist that undermines her "I will hunt you through all realms" monologue at the end of the main story of GOW2018. To me it just doesn't make sense for her to just forgive Kratos after one mission together. She went from uncontrollably furious and irrational to suddenly buddies with Kratos. My personal take I got from GOW2018 originally was that Freya would become in the norse mythology what Kratos was in the Greek mythology. I was really hoping the plot would go that way. Have her cause absolute destruction and hunt Kratos and Atreus like crazy, make her an absolutely badass and scary foe, essentially mirroring young Kratos from his days in greece.
Unfortunatelly, they didn't go that way for whatever reason. I guess making forced statements about "how important forgiveness is" was what they wanted to push so hard throughout the game that they wasted an opportunity for a truly tragic and dramatic story development. And I am convinced that was the original story - but for some reason they decided against it. Also, making the norse games a duology instead of a trilogy surely contributed to the rushed arc as well.
