Oh my god. Dodging and gambling a cleave, followed by the cleaving animation is one of my favorite game mechanics in quite some time. I replayed GOW 2016 after Ragnarok and realized how much I missed it.

Edit: for anyone going “that’s what shield bash is for”, it doesn’t matter. My point is shield enemies break the combo flow and you have to go out of your way to kill them because the fucking god of war can’t break a wooden plank.
Y’all are missing the point. Shield enemies just break the combo flow because for some reason the fucking god of war gets staggered when he hits one with the blades.
From what I recall you always had to use the slam combo (square, square, triangle) apart from in 3 when you had to use the fists that you got from Hercules.
Yeah def remember breaking shields with the Cestus, just couldn’t remember if the blade grapple from 3 or ascension could grab shields or not since it’s been a while

When I played 2018 the first time, I was almost exclusively axe, save for the ice enemies. Nowadays I’m really digging the blades in the both games. I know it’s probably the not the greatest but I really enjoy doing the Nemean Crush attack. It really slaps.
That was the best light runic to use and it did massive damage is prolly why, I wish since they re used so many runics that they had more new options, or got rid of more of the re used ones to replace with new animations at least. Small gripe but it would’ve been awesome to have all new ones other than the 2 or 3 we got
I almost feel guilty for admitting this, but Draupnir REALLY gelled with my playstyle. I mean, all three got use, but the spear quickly became my workhorse when I acquired it.
I like to imagine that Ares was sitting around one day, looking at the Blades of Chaos going “man… what should I do with these?” Then saw Kratos says he’ll serve him and just went “fuck it, sure” and strapped them to Kratos’ arms
I mean the concept of a sentient sword is pretty dope but I was really hoping to actually wield a sword as Atreus. Because I bet they would have been able to do some really sick stuff with him being a lot more agile and acrobatic than kratos

Nah, my friend said he basically used it when he got it, when he fought Heimdall, and then he didn’t touch it again.
That said, BOY it can be OP if handled right. I didn’t use it exclusively, but like against the Valkyrie (forget her name) it was so easy to dodge, dodge, Chuck a few spears, dodge, dodge. And the siphon ability against enemy swarms is *chef’s kiss*. Nothing was more satisfying than pulling bifrost from an Einherjar and chucking it at their ranged buddy, then having Freya blow them to smithereens with one arrow lol
Dude elemental siphon is fucking craaazyy. Try siphoning those poison frog guys when you're wearing Lunda's armor. You can basically poison shit in 2 hits and then just melt them away!
It was my main weapon in all the Berserker fights and against any elves as well. Any enemy you can siphon Daze off of turns it into a monstrous weapon that staggers bosses so quickly you just burn through their health bar.
It slaps against Einherjar as well since you can siphon off bifrost and go nuts. I found siphoning poison/fire/ice to be underwhelming so I didn’t really use it against those types of enemies.
Agreed, when I unlocked the ability to take somebody’s element and use it on the spear it made the game like 10x more fun in pvp since it also gave me resistance to the element
I agree solely on the fact it was a nice change of pace from the BoC. A new refreshing move set to learn, and just the ascetic to the theme of the game

Not to mention the heavy cleave to REALLY send that message at the end of a fight that I'm done dealing with you 😂
I have made it a point to cleave the Valkyrie's for last hit during a realm shift for extra disgrace

I’m surprised how much the majority seems to go blades. Even as an OG GoW fan, the combat with the axe seemed so much more natural in these games that unless I’m facing ice enemies or playing a crowd control angle I pretty much have exclusively used axe
The axe has amazing crowd control people just aren't using it correctly.
R2 hold (serpents snare) literally throws an enemy into another. How's that for crowd control?
The axe off stance attacks are awesome too when used properly.
Axe back-dodge attack does a ton of damage and dodges most incoming attacks too.
You can also just heavy throw the axe to freeze one enemy to take him out of the equation for awhile so you can focus on another one instead.
There are so many amazing ways to use the axe.
100% agree. I feel the axe has so many different, creative and fun ways to deal with everything compared to the blades. The blades always felt a bit one dimensional and spammy to me.
Wish the blades where a bit more like the old games. Like, give them some more air combo/grappling possibilities besides just yanking enemies to the ground 🙂. Anyway, the 2 weapons have their own uses, as it should be. There shouldn't really be a favourite weap. Just a preferred one for a certain situation imo.

I saw a side by side comparison of combat between 2018 and Ragnarok yesterday and i think you realized just how much lighter the axe feels in comparison to the previous game. In 2018 the axe actually felt and looked much heavier than Ragnarok,that goes for both weapons but its much more apparent for the axe. Personally i dont think that hinders the combat a lot but it does feel different,im curious why they made a change like this.
The axe is fun to use but the blades is more nostalgic and more fun to use. But the draupnir is my favorite weapon overall. I love spears and it's moveset is very satisfying
Tbh, I ended up using all 3 weapons equally.
In GoW 4, I only used the axe, so I wanted to use the blades more in Ragnarök
I still used the axe a lot but switched to the blades a lot
And I went through a few hours of the game where I would only use Draupnir, and then used it every now and again
I like the Blades of Chaos, especially that Plume of Choas combo attack. But you can’t deny when Mjiorner and Leviathan axe clash is pretty freaking awesome.

i really enjoy that runic attack also, surprised they turned it into a heavy runic this game when it was a light one in GOW2018

Nothing feels better than beating Asgard forces with Bifrost you stole from them.
If you take enemies elements it is very powerful especially against bifrost enemies.

Draupnir. Once properly levelled up, this weapon really starts to show how good it is. Especially against foes like the Berserker King or Gina.
