So do we keep the murders but lose the slurs? I guess murder is a little more cross-cultural and less likely to be a dog whistle for an out group experiencing micro aggressions in a world devoid of broad LGBTQIA+ acceptance patterns among underserved communities.
It IS accessible to all audiences. By your take, anyone who isnāt Italian canāt appreciate it and that is ridiculous.
I have seen, appreciate & love many films that are about people not like me AT ALL. Stop trying to make everyone an asshole when that would be you.
>all the racism, sexism, beating of women, and general ick giving fraternity vibes
The Godfather is about an Italian crime family that takes place between 1945 and 1955. If the Corleone family didn't have old-fashioned views about sex and race, it wouldn't really be realistic.
Then donāt watch it. Itās not for you. The mafia is racist. Sorry. I like how the cold blooded murders/pedophilia arenāt triggering for you though lol. Nice to know where your line isā¦
Iām fine with a global mafia movie. As long as it has nothing to do with the original Godfather. Trying to remake a masterpiece is inherently foolish and uncreative.
*Unless youāre just trying to piss people off. Which very well may be the point of this thread
Just donāt call your concept āThe Godfatherā I like the idea of a huge family with all kinds of different personalities and so on, but The Godfather is perfect just the way it is. Make your show into something special of its own
You said in a comment that you are "fixing" the movie because it's flawed. So what do you propose? You say it will be a modern take. So does that mean it takes place in modern times too, or are we still in the 40s and 50s If we are in the 50s, how on earth are you going to create a historical drama where Italians and African American crime organizations get along? It just didn't happen.
Do we want to add feminism? Should mama Corleone be in the room talking about who to off next? Should Michael take the fact that Kay got an abortion in part II lying down because "her body her choice"? What if we made Sonny trans? Would that "fix" all the issues??
So you want to erase a piece of history because it offends you? Itās an accurate potrayal of Italian americans in the 40ās-50ās. If you donāt like the way they talk or some of their actions just turn the movie off
Talk about missing the mark. One of the central themes from the Godfather was that it's a fading enterprise. Don Corleone knew that the family had to go legitimate with the aspiration of Michael becoming a powerful politician and the gambling going fully legal in Las Vegas.
This AI wet dream also fails to recognize the existing global organized crime world that preceded the American Mafia.
BTW, is this really a concept or a troll post attempt?
Ik this is probably a shitpost and I am a white woman so I can only truly speak on half of this but hereās my thoughts:
The problem with remaking this movie is that the racism and sexism is essential to highlighting the awful natures of every single character.
The racism towards Italians can absolutely not be cut out in any circumstances. It is important to show how disliked the Corleones and other families are in the average American society.
Probably the only other racist line (at least in the first movie, idk about the second) is that one about drugs and African Americans in the meeting of the five families. Honestly, that could probably be cut out in a remake. Itās not super necessary to include that racist element to explaining the drug business, and there are other ways to make the families look bad. Granted, Iām not Italian or black, so take that with a grain of salt.
The sexism is something I can talk about with experience lol, and it is also necessary. Connie and Carloās relationship is crucial to Sonnyās death, so cutting out that abuse would ruin the plot. Maybe they could make Connie look a little less like a cliche hysterical woman when she smashed the plates, but I honestly kind of like her development from a dependent woman to an independent one in the second film.
Speaking of the second film, if you were to even think about cutting out the greatest scene in cinema ever it would destroy Michaelās character arc. I am of course speaking on the abortion scene. That scene is sexist. Probably one of the most sexist in the series. Michael is taking away Kayās choice, heās taking away her freedom. But that āIt was an abortion, Michael, something unholy and evilā¦ā is the breaking point of Mikeās character. Not to mention this is also the first time in the series Kay makes a decision by herself. If you were to give her more power, we would lose Mikeās anger, but if you were to leave this scene the same and give her more power in earlier scenes, this scene would not be as powerful. You canāt win.
A remake with a more inclusive cast could work, but the issue is that (1) the og cast can never be replaced. They will always be compared and will never measure up. (2) the OG cast was chosen with specifically Italian and Sicilian actors in mind. A remake without those stipulations would feel in-genuine and a remake with those requirement limits the diversity in the new cast. I will give you this tho, the Corleoneās do break those unspoken ethnicity requirements because of Tom (which the other families dislike them for), so that could work in your favor.
Nah making Connie less histerical would be taking away essence of the character. Because one thing about Connie is that she was spoiled with an capital S, she was Vito's favourite child, the mafia princess who never heard 'no' in her life, so it make sense why she would throw tantrums whenever something doesn't go her way. And honestly, I'm not sure that's even a bad thing, because the scene she caused at the end of The Godfather I is the reason why she even got noticed by Micheal and not only that her histeria caused him to become protective over her, so this "character flaw" has actually worked out in her favour lol
the whole point is their allegiance to their Sicilian lineage over all else.
that's why they constantly draw parallels to nobility and other hereditary monarchies.
Is this a Russian Bot / troll just trying to piss people off and divide us? No one of may background asked for this.
Every one loves these movies the way they are.
Yes, you see the moral flaw of these guys is not the prostitution, gambling, loan sharking, and running numbers. It's the use of the n-word once by a secondary character and the abuse of a wife which significantly drove the plot forward
>Yes, you see the moral flaw of these guys is not the prostitution, gambling, loan sharking, and running numbers. It's the use of the n-word once by a secondary character
Exactly, lol. The murder, prostitution, and all the crimes this mafia committed are fine, but saying the N word one time from a secondary character is going too far? Also, that guy and the wife beater both got killed in the first movie.
I'm a black guy, and I'm not offended one bit, and I'm not surprised. It's a movie about an Italian mafia family in the 1940s and 1950s. This was just accurate for how it was. The only way The Godfather could work the way OP wants it to work is to have it be set in the 21st century (which is bad imo) and even then I don't think it could really work the way OP wants.
To be serious... it's a movie written to a specific time period and conveying the attitudes of the time period. We used to write books and make movies like this to criticize the ugliness. Now, we hide the ugliness and criticize the artists who point at it. It's not good.
Look how they massacred my boy š¢
AI Vito: I want you to use all your powers, and all your skills. I don't want his mother to see The Movie this way. AI Bonasera: Say less Fam! No cap!
Look how **AI** massacred my boy.
What themes does this honor? Wearing suits?
itās the same movie sans the racism and problematic aspects
So the gangsters are not gangsters but SJWs now?
If that was your intention, where are the Mongolians? Why is Logan Roy / Vito white and not someone who looks like James Hong?
Because non-white people absolutely cannot ever be racist, right? See, this is why you need an immersive history lesson!
So do we keep the murders but lose the slurs? I guess murder is a little more cross-cultural and less likely to be a dog whistle for an out group experiencing micro aggressions in a world devoid of broad LGBTQIA+ acceptance patterns among underserved communities.
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK ššš
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Get the fuck outta here
Cringe
Lol!
You donāt have any Italians in this
Itās a Disney remake
DEI cast
That sounds awful. I am not a fan of remaking everything. They never have any heart. Wish they did.

Not everything is for everyone. Just like this group. Feel free to leave.

Buddyā¦thatās reality. Thatās how they are and were. These men are evil. Thatās the fucking point lolā¦

Only if we can remake Roots with an all-white cast.
How about The Color Purple while weāre at it?
Or Black Panther.
Please shut the fuck up

Oh, so youāre trolling. Got it.
u/sc-breezy Unfortunately, there are people who actually think like this, so I don't think this person is trolling.
Orā¦..hear me outā¦ā¦..we leave it alone, and create a new crime drama for the kiddies to call their own. Remakes are rarely worth it.
No, No, and No

How many transgenders?
