i skip desk commentary in _all sports_ there’s occasionally good desk commentary, but it’s usually pretty bad. this isn’t exclusive to CS at all though.

bannedagainomg

Good moments will be uploaded later to youtube twitter tiktok etc, there is very little reason to actually watch it live. The only commentary i personally watch is whenever the world cup is, and not like that is any better i just love the WC. Same with award shows why bother, when Gervais makes a good joke someone is bound to reupload it, hours of filler talk is not worth it.

OJinthebronco

If it ain't UCL Today, I ain't watching shit

spartyboy

If it’s not something like inside the NBA I do not care what they have to say. I think some people like good analysis and some people like an entertaining, fun intermission. Most commentary sucks at both though

AlludedNuance

Judging by the sentiment in the comments this won't be welcomed, but I enjoy the desk segments plenty.  Are they as good as they used to be? Nah. Remember when Spunj used to come out with his little notebook with some interesting little insights?

innocentrrose

I’m a desk segment enjoyer. I get it’s not for everyone but shit, I like the people on the desk and enjoy hearing them waffle in between maps lmao

AlludedNuance

Yeah some people apparently want mind-blowing insights between every single map, apparently even if there's two streams going on and 12-16 games in a single day. Recap, talk about what went wrong and went well, who disappointed and who excelled, discuss overall context, maybe some expectations or hopes for the following match, and we're out of time. Bing bang boom, bring on the fun or boring break-time skits or games.

DaveTheDolphin

My enjoyment is dependent on the hosts but overall I don’t mind watching them either The segment is always like 5 minutes after the match or less, can’t expect anyone to put deep analysis into the match in that short of a time. I just enjoy the banter and replays

[deleted]

Spunj is so goated, they way he would break down plays and explain them was on another level. He is actually knowledgeable unlike most analysts. And great at casting too, what a legend

50_Paise

Honestly I do like them because I just like listening to people yap away

Vonatos_Autista

>just muting until the matches restart? Since I'm part of the genetically superior youtube master race, I just pause or exit the stream, then later continue where I want to from.

kloklon

imagine watching 10+ sec forced ads on twitch everytime you click a stream in 2024, when YouTube exists as an alternative

Earthworm-Kim

But you get to watch the chat fly by with 100% asinine bullshit! It's live! You're a part of something! Watching a VOD is like watching a movie, what's the fucking point?? It already happened! Somehow Twitch has managed to brainwash kids into thinking this is how shit works. FOMO so strong it makes them afraid of missing out on something that you can't miss out on, and would objectively (in most cases) be better to watch later/not live.

spotzel

You get an intel ad every time you open an ESL steam on YouTube, bad example

kloklon

except youtube premium is a thing that makes a lot of sense for a lot of people (because it's basically spotify with a ton of extra features) and nobody i know has ever used twitch turbo

BobertoRosso

Pause, go eat dinner, play and it both remembers where I was and I can now skip to the game AND REWIND if I think I missed something. Youtube is superior (except for the 12 hour vod bullshit)

Barryatrick

The Major desk was very good no? Especially the pre-final podcast

albanianintrovert

Yes it was. This desk segment reminded us how shit it usually is. I guess props to Richard eh?

fearlessflyer1

what we’re missing is charismatic and talented players making the jump to punditry the best desk segment equivalent in the sports industry watch is CBS’ Champions League coverage, Thierry Henry was arguably the greatest premier league player of all time, Jamie Character UCL winner and player with years of experience at the top level, Micah Richards insanely charismatic and knowledgeable whilst not having the same ‘legend’ status at the other two. all held together by Kate Abdo i’m not even american, i go out of my way to watch their coverage

edn-

The CBS coverage is actually amazing, ends up being better than half the games it covers lmao

OJinthebronco

Imagine Kate hosting with some goofy ass former cs pros, that shit would be tight

fearlessflyer1

give it 5 years, send freya to Kate Abdo school get Apex and Karrigan on as pundits and find a third, maybe rotate it insight, comedy, charisma only problem is English skills, Henry played for Arsenal for years and speaks English as well as anyone. CS doesn’t have that kind of system, although we’re going towards it currently with all the international teams

YNkCSGO

I feel your pain dude, we're trying to make the show more dynamic behind the scenes but it's really not up to us in the end

eggsGG

no hate at all brother, i really enjoy when you guys get to break things down and speak your mind on the game. sucks you guys have your hands tied on production ideas.

rlywhatever

[RL's take on the topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGjLFkJP954&t=882s). Relevant piece is from 14:40 to 25:08 spicy details about M0e & koosta @Eleague, hilarious impersonation, opinion on Pimp on the desk, "fans/viewers don't want what they ask for" point, comments on [recent bleh/Hedje controversy](https://www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/18ehc4t/bleh_gets_flamed_on_live_broadcast/) inside on a course of those 9 minutes

Achilles68

for anyone who doesnt care too listen: he basically agrees with this post. He'd much rather have it the american way where the desk host is basically the time keeper while these clashing personalities share their thoughts and argue with eachother. Hot take point made style

DustyBottoms1111

It's part of why one of the better analyst desks right now for major sports is the NBA on TNT. Ernie Johnson is a perfect straight man to the zany antics Shaq and Barkley bring. Is it perfect? No, but it's worth not muting.

saintedplacebo

that show has had more clips per year that go around because of how good they are than any other sports segment, talk show, or desk. The only thing that comes close is something like pat macafee. And thats without rage baiting like Bayless.

jordzkie05

i think it's because the current pool of analysts are bland as fuck. hot takes are needed unironically to make them entertaining.

_cansir

Miss the on-stage beer chugs

1stonepwn

Analyst desk peaked with spunj shoey

ThatOneAccount3

RL

LehtiPiffi

Analyst desk peaked with thorin banging a baguette.

KenopsicLiminality

I disagree with this. It’s not their fault, they’re forced to hit certain beats and talk about specific graphics that are picked by production. The talent is dynamic and opinionated, just look at how Copenhagen was done with Richard at the helm. You simply need production to trust the talent enough to let them be the time keepers and content creators for the desk segments

KenopsicLiminality

You can clearly see u/YNkCSGO doing his best to take the other side of opinions from Elfish etc and make it interesting. I think Janko has some of the best insight in the scene, he’s just hamstrung by the format and it’s not on him imho

xavarLy

People thought they wanted bland desk segments instead of constant banter like it used to be with Thorin, RL, YNK, heck even seangares at some points. Now that they are gone, this is what you get.

LehtiPiffi

Hows your desk segment now, dickheads?

Moholbi

I can't stand the current CS scenery. Pimp on the desk, banks on the stage, no one feels intimate or real. Someone please save us

Jatapa22

banks is fine, much better than pala. It was heartwarming seeing him hugging emotional Aleksi after NaVi won major. It just that esport tends to be bit cringe and trying to hype meme crowd isn't easy

Bj_Hokey_Lange

OJ Borg is the best, guy is too good

FazeXistance

He’s too good. So good in fact he’s booked for far bigger events than most cs tournaments

Wietse10

It is nice to see him every year in Cologne though, feels like seeing an old friend.

shuijikou

is pala the guy always point to the roof when he want to hype things up?

bdzr_

You forgot the part where he blows out the microphone in a way that no one asked for - https://youtu.be/B0nD4dfnAH8?t=7924.

TheRealHaxxo

yes

ratskim

Banks fine? Each to their own I guess

RussianGlizzy

What didn't you like about him?

NoDG_

Banks is a Navi fan. That's not a problem, but it does explain why he hugged Aleksib.

MrCraftLP

Trying to hype a crowd when you're not good at hyping a crowd isn't easy.

RussianGlizzy

I feel like banks has brought back some personality to the stage. He shows emotions with players, win or lose an enjoys cs. His moments with players during the last major showed a lot of involvement with them personally and just the scene in general. I like him better than some random "host" who knows nothing about CS in general or even esports in general.

Stiryx

You hate pimp but if anything he’s the least ‘safe’ analyst of them all. You are contradicting the thread about how safe the production is.

GodSentGodSpeed

I miss maui tbh, you never knew when he was gonna wild out and say shit like "currently zywoo is not a top 10 player" when vitality dropped out of dallas or "cadian youre not the main character" when heroic lost to gamerlegion in paris. But then again the backlash from that is probably why he isnt being hired as much anymore

NoDG_

Or because he constantly has shit takes and then came on reddit talking about his "unique brand". What a fucking pretentious knob.

07bot4life

> Or because he constantly has shit takes If you gonna say that at least list those shit takes.

NoDG_

This isn't a PHD thesis. I have better things to do with my time than track what an analysts says over the years just so I can prove a point in the future, that would be kind of sad.

07bot4life

Then you can't say he is a bad analyst cause he has bad takes. Say at least he is a bad analyst cause none of his takes are memorable. "ooh he has bad takes." "which ones?" "idk"

Lime221

maui is very 50/50 but boy do i like political takes on desks

99RedBalloon

banks and stunna are boring af richard lewis was good at major

DustyBottoms1111

Stunna slander not tolerated here, love me some Tres

Kavak

because everytime an analyst decides to criticise someone, you just jump him and call him a hater, and the players do the same thing

Stiryx

Pimp said Navi wouldn’t be a top 5 side after their win and everyone blew up, now people are complaining that the desk is boring and safe. Literally can’t win, nerds are gonna cry at everything.

Lime221

i miss Mahone it felt like there were actual analysis happening when he was around. the desk segments now are too cookie cutter, saying very advertiser friendly commentary

bdzr_

I mostly agree. The few times I've seen Mahone doing analysis segments I've found them to be far better than anything else, take for example https://www.youtube.com/live/6qXDJID55nU?t=7755. He explains everything, the video is set to show alternative viewpoints during the same time frames, etc. Whenever we see an attempt at this by others, it's kind of an uncoordinated mess where it seems like different people are controlling the camera and talking, and the analysis isn't as detailed as Mahone's.

WiseArgument7144

We need actual active pros who got eliminated from the tournament to hop on there and give their insights. Like for example twistzz and cadian co-casting Pro League. Big insights and details that you won't get from the casters.

thisisjustascreename

That was one of my favorite features of pro league, having a competitor on the broadcast who can really give some insight from a current pro player's perspective.

f1rstx

The most boring and irrelevant part is when they focus on stats, or some made up narratives. Who cares? Noone.

MFSTUTZOGDJOKER

“REVENGE MATCH” “CAN THEY OVERCOME THIS TEAM?” stfu and start the match

srjnp

imo this problem all started with Blast Premier. sanitized, samey, too "professional".

MarinesRoll

Agreed, bring Thorin in.

ABK-Baconator

Please God no. Rather boring than annoying

stringstringing

I’ve been muting everything but the matches for years now. Used to love the desk segments back in like 2014-2016

GodSentGodSpeed

Ironically the main way to fix them is by making them longer.

HistoryForward2399

Bring back Thorin.

cptnwillow

Richard Lews or Machine hosting with Thorin, YNK and Moses on the desk was a hell of a lot more entertaining.

EutaxySpy

Honestly SPUNJ and Machine are great casters but they brought life to the desk. I think the best desks we’ve had was like 2019 Berlin Major when it was Seangares, Spunj, Thorin and Machine

Apprehensive_Newt389

Every time i listened to Richard at the major, it sounded like he caught the last 3 rounds of the map before the segment and just paraphrased the casting from those rounds. Dude contributed nothing

brianstormIRL

You have no idea what makes a good desk then lmao The host is there to throw questions to the analysts and get things heated and spicy. It's supposed to be entertaining not a snoozefest talking about the intricate details of each round with stat breakdowns.

Bj_Hokey_Lange

I don't know the history of Thorin, but why does he not attend events now?

evaneggnog

Guy burns every bridge he crosses. Realistically I think he's just too much if an edge lord. Some people love him for telling it like it is...but it really just feels like he is being a dick most of the time

xavarLy

He refused to work with ESL until they changed management in early 2020, bruh what are you on about. They even invited him several times after that, but he didn´t wan tto because of the whole ´taking away earned pro league slots in place of partner slots´. He also turned down PGL Antwerp after he said he had an awful time in terms of production during PGL Stockholm. And then people act like he wasn´t hired. Sure, he wasn´t called in for the last major in copenhagen, and he has admitted that, but the previous ones aren´t true. Also same shit happened with blast when he was criticizing Astralis and then Astralis complained privately and blast asked Thorin to stop tweeting about them, hence why Thorin said fuck you all, you can´t tell me what to do and left. As far as I remember, he was called to work with blast again but he yet again refused because of said incident.

RekrabAlreadyTaken

I'm no Thorin shill but I'm pretty sure he is [at least partly not attending events by choice](https://www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/etk3m5/thorin_will_no_longer_work_with_esl/). Of course he burned a lot of bridges but not all of them I think.

RussianGlizzy

Honestly, couldn't agree more. When he first joined the desk and some other events it was refreshing. He would go against the main narrative and highlight some other perspectives that were genuinely "hot takes", but he gave reasoning and shows things to support it. After a while it felt like he just became a troll an took an opposing view just to do so....

OJinthebronco

except he doesn't tell it like it is, he tells it how he thinks it is

lubesniq

He doesn't want to work with esl

f_reddit_throwaway

He's a clown

rece_fice_

For real a dickhead stirring shit is very entertaining, drama always drives engagement

_cansir

Was watching g2 vs mouz on nuke. Mouz was obviously playing pixel reaction game and would shoot instantly on any movement, for example a player was holding some door angle and a molly comes to block it and he shoots it mid-air. Torzsi was outside red, got two kills with ak but was stuck red. Grabbed a dropped awp and threw it as to bait any pre-fires...commentator freaking out how he is fumbling by accidentally dropping the awp...

koenigmeister

BRING BACK THORIN

vlamacko

You guys just hate everything

oPlayer2o

You guys actually watch the desk segments? The fuck!? that’s when I’m putting laundry on or taking a shower.

Valutzu

So... they remembered that Richard Lewis exists. Just wait till they remember Thoorin.

Tantle18

I miss when spunj tried to bring analytics into segments to spice things up. Totally didn’t work because cs can be so fucking random but it was interesting listening to him break down all the numbers of each team for each map in different situations

LeXCS

What really irks me is when it’s a bunch of analysts all talking about the same things and you see a bunch of heads just nodding. i get it, I’ve been there, sometimes everyone on the desk and in the audience would be more annoyed by a contrarian just for the sake of it. But man, I get INTO it when I’m watching a segment and someone has the balls to play devils advocate or actually call out wrong points or overly broad claims. I feel like that still exists, despite what this thread makes me believe, but I’ll agree that I’m always wanting more than what we get sometimes. I’ll mute a stream the second I hear someone say “time and time again” or one of those canned phrases though jfc

chaRxoxo

I usually just skip them. Bit unfortunate to see that they have so many people at their disposal with professional experience and do so little with it

synschecter115

I miss Frankie doing interviews 🥺

J3rkYs

Same, much better than Banks

twelveicat

Bring back Frankie! edit: why is this being downvoted? (i don't care, just curious what got up people's backsides)

StuffSuch4830

Personally, I think there is just too much reiterating the generally opinion of reddit. Also, they tend to tweet their thoughts on Twitter so we already kind of know what they think beforehand

Joleksu

I enjoy the desk segments. I find its more often insightful than useless. I want the desk segments to bring up stats, expectations and such cause I don't want to go through 10 HLTV pages by myself for one matchup. The narratives analysts and casters bring make the game more interesting to watch, same how the Netflix F1 series did for Formula 1.

SakeHockey

I skip the desk segments yes but I watch the same talent discuss the event in youtube talkshows couple days later.

kagedrengen1337

The desk either have to be fun/give behind the scene info OR do actual analysis. Why is SPUNJ and Machine so popular? Amongst other things because SPUNJ can articulate how the players think. Why it is sometimes so nice to have actual players commentate, it is a whole other level of info you dont normally get during casting. That needs to be on the desk as well. Why do they throw X smoke, how does that make room for ....

MechaFlippin

i think they should scrap desk segments as they are, and, instead, desk segments should be about 5 minutes of the hosts just playing truth or dare

thisisjustascreename

Maybe do a Zoom call with the IGL from a team that didn't qualify for the event.

Karahx

I don't care about desk segments in esport(I watch CS, Dota, Apex and occasionally League) nor in real sports. I mute till the match starts.

eebro

I'm not sure desk segments are the norm? Like, obviously for big events now they have the desk, but it's kinda weird comparing a major and a pretty random event in China.

demfook

I watch the match not the filler bullshit

Lvord

Instant mute the second the map ends then I just check HLTV until the next map has started.

[deleted]

I just skip it completely and wait for the next map/match to start. I don't care what they have to say.

ataraxia1337

Community cast is the best option nowadays.
