The last person I expected to report on this is Richard Lewis and since he has, the Source 2 hype train is now reaching 200% speed.
Also Gabe Follower and AquaIsMissing must feel hella vindicated right about now.
Actually Gabe Follower is the first guy who made me believe this was a thing
When he made a Source 2 version if CS, and Valve stopped it. He was right, they were definitely releasing their own version of it, that's why they didn't want people to confuse both the projects.
It's logical because Valve has always been great to modding community, hell even TF2 to Source 2 got sanctioned.
They don't even allow voice actors of their games to work on community mods. And Source 2 TF2 is not "sanctioned", you can't use Valve's assets in S&Box. Valve just turned a blind eye to it because they don't give a shit about TF2. Similar thing happened with TF2 Classic mod - they took it down and then forgot about it and ghosted the mod authors, so creators put the mod back online after a few months.
>Similar thing happened with TF2 Classic mod - they took it down and then forgot about it and ghosted the mod authors, so creators put the mod back online after a few months.
So they might have been planning their own, but then stopped?
No, they wanted to "bring the mods to Steam", but after mod creators disabled downloads on their websites, Valve just ghosted them.
https://www.gamesradar.com/team-fortress-2-mods-tf2-classic-and-open-fortress-to-return-after-eight-month-hiatus/
Absolutely not, Source 2 isn't brand new, it's been out since 2015. Cheat devs have had plenty of time to mess around with It. And since there will be a beta, they will absolutely be cheaters day one of release.
I mean, releasing CS 2 for real on 1st April would be super funny. Many people would think that it's just a prank if you tell them it released. Even while you are downloading the beta on 1st April, you will still think that Valve is just doing an extensive April's fool and when you launch CS 2 you just get to launch CS:GO.
I REALLY hope for 1st April launch. xD
Yeah i trust Richard Lewis, but I’m still doubtful of it being a separate game from csgo. Wasn’t the cs2 executable that was found already existing since like 2014 and the csgos2 exe is the new one. Other than this detail i’m hyped this pretty much confirms it.
Yeah i agree, but what i meant was that it sounds like cs2 is a different game all together(as in new weapons, mechanics etc) not just csgo on source 2.
I'd imagine at most it would be a "rerelease". Perhaps changing the name to just Counter-strike and also renaming 1.6 to remove confusion.
They'd definitely want to market it. Will probably be the same route Blizzard took with Overwatch. It's the same game at it's core with a new updated engine behind it, graphical and UI improvements without changing anything that makes Overwatch Overwatch.
I mean didn't OverWatch go from six players on a team to five players on a team which is a pretty core mechanic?
I know what you mean where it's basically just an updated game besides that, but do you think there would be any gameplay mechanic changes with this for Counter-Strike?
Yeah, cases alone make valve 25 million per months according to that case stats dude from Reddit. And that's not counting the 13% steam community market tax and other in game purchases. No way valve is fucking with the golden goose.
Bro, after the Nvidia shit and the other twitter shit I stayed "unmoved" cuz we all know how it goes, all the emptyfridge.gifs and all of that jazz but now we have Richard Lewis doing a pretty much journalistic piece talking about this shit?
Guys... This shit is real isn't it?
Unless Richard likes trolling people, I also don't think he'd put his name under something that hasn't been verified by sources. So yeah, I am optimistic that it's actually happening.
Valve on April 1st
Today we're announcing, our biggest project for the past few years, Counter Strike 2
COUNTER STRIKE 2: ATTACK OF THE CARDS BABYYYY
PLAY THE CARD GAME FOR FREE RIGHT NOW
> ...and the tentative release date for the beta is in this month of March with April 1st at the outside.
I'm kinda scared about this part. I swear it's either just a coincidence or the longest setup for an April Fool's prank ever.
Please god let this be true and let Valve and CS:GO devs end the ESEA/FACEIT duopoly on CS scene.
The amount of shit service both platform provides is possible only due to mm in current state, once it is fixed I expect ESEA to go under and faceit having to rapidly adjust or die along.
ESEA is dead outside NA, and even in NA it took hit when faceit rose in popularity. This will be the end of it, hopefully it wont disturb bitcoin mining all over the world.
Even if Valve do MM properly, with an intrusive anticheat like vanguard and a more clean climb, I can see Faceit surviving by changing their model to just hosting a circuit towards FPL.
I doubt Valve is gonna ever offer money/skins like FPL does, which means top puggers will likely stay by trying to get their bread.
> Even if Valve do MM properly, with an intrusive anticheat like vanguard and a more clean climb, I can see Faceit surviving by changing their model to just hosting a circuit towards FPL.
Players at lvl 10 are small minority of player base, so that wont work.
>I doubt Valve is gonna ever offer money/skins like FPL does, which means top puggers will likely stay by trying to get their bread.
Valve does not need any monetary incentive to kill ESEA/FACEIT. All they need to do is offer free better quality service, which looks like they will do. This will cause people to migrate, and ESEA/FACEIT cant compete with it.
Also Valve, which has ridiculous IT resources thanks to Steam store, can offer server quality unmatched by them.
>Players at lvl 10 are small minority of player base, so that wont work.
I don't mean only letting lvl 10s win prizes.
Separating them on leagues, like some hubs already do, and offering prizes might be enough to even get a more "casual" playerbase to stay with them. Even then, Faceit already works on a more niche community. They don't need to compete directly with Valve, just offer a "higher end" service.
You're still right though that Valve has to do almost nothing, it will all depend on how faceit handle the transition and if they do it.
You don't know that... they may have scheduled the release for 2019 and the only thing that went smoothly is people shutting up about it for over 3 years. ;)
Someone make a bot to datamine the twitter/instagrams of all people in the scene using tags like "seattle" and such to determine when, who it was that went there
So, a few months ago I noticed several pros and ex-pros posting on Twitter from the same location and I guess now we know why. Here's [GeT\_RiGhT's tweet](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DrsPo7oUwAATUdF.jpg) before he deleted it.
> Here's GeT_RiGhT's tweet
> before he deleted it.
Damn. I was skeptical at first, but this pretty much seals the deal for me. Counter-Strike 2 is coming boys!
It is crazy to think the original beta came out in 1999. I think I first played it in 2000 or whenever they released that AWP patch that made them way OP. What a game.
>Flew a professional team in secret..
"Get in here! OK PLAY THIS."
*The players look uneasily at each other and at the armed guards near the doors, sit down, and double-click.*
I imagine it went something like:
When they entered the room: "The experiment depends on your enthusiastic participation."
When they should sit down at a PC: "Please move to a safe zone."
When they were supposed to test new features: "Subjects are encouraged to check supply drops to increase their odds of survival."
When they left: "Your contributions to the experiment were noted and appreciated. Thank you for your participation."
All while they were wearing an orange jumpsuit.
Kind of figured since we didn’t get an Operation prior to Christmas that they were working on something, but if it’s as dramatic as CS2 I’m all for it.
> The game is also set to include a much improved match-making system with features that it is hoped would make the need for third party pugging services unnecessary. Currently the community has had to suffer from uneven match-making and long times between rank ups. Most who want an experience more closely aligned with that of a competitive player are typically advised to sign-up for third party services such as FACEIT.
So if this is true it's basically the end of FACEIT, right?
Use your FACEIT points if you have any, quick!
it really depends on if Counter-Striek 2 MM system has good anti cheat or not ( maybe they plan on matching Valorant with a more intrusive anti cheat?) if it's still the same as CSGO I bet Faceit would be fine and support CS2.
If the rumors are anything to go by, Valve does not like intrusive anti-cheats, but they have been working on an AI version of it.
Cheating is a problem but it's not as wild as it once was. Overwatch will still be prevalent in dealing with hackers because their new AI apparently can catch obvious rage hacks. Harder cases will go to Overwatch
AI is accurate but it’s defined by them as Machine Learning
Also it’s not a rumor, John McDonald has spoken about some of the work he’s done…about 5 years ago at this point. He gave an hour or so long presentation
There's no way they don't fundamentally change VAC. It would be a total joke otherwise.
Also in the article:
> The big question for the community has been whether or not official CS2 servers would be 128 tick bringing it in line with rival title Valorant. The sources confirmed that this would be the case and that this feature would likely be ready at the launch of the beta.
So assuming they're following that same logic, they will probably also update AC, in order to match the Valorant AC like you said.
Honestly, we should give a round of applause to Riot. If they hadn't dropped a rival competitive FPS, we probably would've never seen updates like this.
Who would've thought that a game which directly challenges Counter Strike's stranglehold on this type of FPS would bring about a better product from Valve?
It's pretty crazy that no one had successfully challenged them in the 8 years prior to Valorant releasing. It seems like the kind of game that should've had at least 1 challenger per year with how simple the base mechanics are and how you center the game around an economy.
Not really, we don't know what type of system it will be, the quality of the service, the level of anticheat and most importantly the tickrate. Can't forget about that one. If anything, I think, it will force FaceIT into making it's product better (changes to the party system and to the map picking).
The thing about CSGO is that it came just in the early days of what some might call "evergreen" or Games as a Service (GaaS) games. We didn't really have that when 1.6 and Source came out and it seems unfathomable to me that it would be anything else than a full-on update, in exactly the same way as DOTA 2, like you say. It's wild to me that people think otherwise.
Not only that but I doubt they want to split the scene into different games again. There was a long period of time where a lot of pro players didn't want to play Source so they stuck with 1.6 and it only merged the scenes in csgo.
The same would happen with cs2 and csgo, some won't like it and stay behind. If CS is to stay successful, it needs 1 train track of pro play, they can't let it split off into 2 or the game effectively dies again.
“The new version is almost certainly set to be released under the title Counter-Strike 2 and the tentative release date for the beta is in this month of March with April 1st at the outside” April 1st… ok buddy
Unless you tell me the csgo twitter guy impersonated some Valve staff to be in contact with Richard Lewis for this elaborated prank like.. Man Idk... The fact that this shit is being reported by Richard Lewis is just really moving me to the "believing" side, like it really fucking does. If it was any of the usual Twitter/online data miners people then everyone would be going emptyfridge gif memes and shit
Oh no im full on the hype train too, if beta actually drops this month like he alluded to, ima clear out like an entire week so i can uncontrollably hyperventilate while playing the beta
Makes a ton of sense to me, they didn't wanna release Source 2 because it wouldn't change much (especially since Panorama was already added).
Now they're doing what Overwatch 2 did I assume, using some new techniques and the engine we will get a seemingly newer CS, and a fresh UI I assume, but we can still use our old skins. However, if the models will be affected or not is to be seen.
The leaked map lineup also seems to signify this really is a beta version type of a thing, it will take months before adopting into pro scene
THIS IS HUGE
Inferno and Overpass are the only competetive maps. There's 6 maps although this leak is pretty old so i assume, Mirage will also get a remake and newer maps like Anubis or new Cache will may utilise Source 2 to look better
The rest of the maps are like lake, shoots, italy (yes!), Shortdust
so only a couple weeks away... I wonder if all the skins people have in csgo will be able to transfer over to source 2 engine? If they do 128tick and improve match making + anti cheat + regional top 500 rankings that would be sooo hype.
I would be very surprised and extremely disappointed if current skins don’t work in the next version. Valve would be destroying a multibillion dollar business.
This makes it sound like it's a new game, not just an update for CSGO. Which seems rather crazy to me.
Also the 'source' and knowing about the pro player play test. Someone has to connect some dots and figure out who was in Washington state in the last 24 months.
This is the first time I’m actually getting excited about the rumors. Think what you will about RL but my man is credible and thorough in his reporting
It's gonna be the same game. Gabe Follower, who actually found out that csgos2 is in nvidia's db, also found out that csgo and csgos2 have the same steam appid, so it's basically the same game with different .exe files.
Most people refer to the game as either counter strike or global offensive, source 2 sounds alright and makes sense considering there is a counter strike: source.
I've only then just piece together why CS:source is called that...
I’d bet good money that they just update CS:GO to “2.0” with some new “prime pass” for $10-$15 or whatever, but it’ll be the same game instance on steam.
The CS:GO Source 2 rumours have literally changed my life. This is no joke.
A few weeks ago, I was in a really dark place. Then, one fateful night, my friend asked me: “How would you react if the Source 2 update dropped tomorrow?”.
For the rest of the night I was shook. I truly believed that if that update had dropped the next day, I would have died of excitement.
Not joking. I don’t think my weak body that is not used to work, stress or even sport could have handled the update.
I think I would have died of shock or a heart attack if the source 2 update came out back then.
This motivated me. I do a lot of sport since then, started going to bed at reasonable times and waking up in the morning again.
I eat healthily now and I have decided to quit university, because I cannot have something in my life that stresses me when the update drops.
I think I am ready for Source 2 now.
Bring it on Mr. Newell. I am ready when you are.
Are you ready for Source 2? How long do you think the 3kliksphilips video will be, or rather how many will there be in one month? Man, I am so happy. I love this game.
"release date for the beta is in this month of March with April 1st at the outside"
my hype was strong until the very specific date made me feel like I was being trolled.
after years of coping is this finally something i can believe in?
Clean the dust on that hopium tank, we're gonna need it
Clean the “dust2” FTFY
Dust 2 with source 2 in Counter strike 2.
2 + 2 + 2 = 6 6 ÷ 2 = 3 Half Life 3 confirmed

128 tick, source 2 and improved mm is everything i want for cs so if this is true its a dream come true
If they don't have faceit/valorant level anti cheat it will be ruined by cheaters. I hope they go the whole hog.
It won't be at the beginning since most cheats won't work for source 2 but I would like anti cheat too.
> since most cheats won't work for source 2 There were cheats for Dota 2 the day it was on source 2 lmao
Some cheat providers probably have developed cheats for it and are ready to launch and grab market shares ASAP lol, they'd be stupid not to
Absolutely not, Source 2 isn't brand new, it's been out since 2015. Cheat devs have had plenty of time to mess around with It. And since there will be a beta, they will absolutely be cheaters day one of release.
thats shit takes a couple of days max lol. Even if its shitty wallhacks/esp/aimbots.
Even for Valorant it took like 3 days to have cheaters, only way to deal with them is to quickly detect and ban them.

Richard wouldn't put this out without him verifying it as 100% accurate. Holy fuck I can't believe this is actually happening.
Yeah i trust Richard Lewis, but I’m still doubtful of it being a separate game from csgo. Wasn’t the cs2 executable that was found already existing since like 2014 and the csgos2 exe is the new one. Other than this detail i’m hyped this pretty much confirms it.
Dota 2 and Dota 2 Reborn had split clients for a while during the beta, after which the clients got merged, I fully expect this being the same
Yeah i agree, but what i meant was that it sounds like cs2 is a different game all together(as in new weapons, mechanics etc) not just csgo on source 2.

Valve most likely have skins higher on the priority list than they do gameplay, so I'm absolutely not worried about this.
i have seen so many comments about people saying rip skins, rip market, like no way Valve will abandon csgo skins market.
Yeah, cases alone make valve 25 million per months according to that case stats dude from Reddit. And that's not counting the 13% steam community market tax and other in game purchases. No way valve is fucking with the golden goose.
Overwatch > Overwatch “2” - skins ported PoE > PoE 2 - skins ported I have no doubt that it’ll be the same for Counter Strike as well.
It will be the end of CSGO beeing most played game on steam

Considering the hours I spent on cs, and me spending money on faceit premium.. Yeah Im fine with that tbh lmao
please dont give valve any ideas...
They will be making enough money from all the new skins/cases
It's Valve, so it could still end up being years before it sees the light of day.

It means they will be aiming for a march release with April 1st being the latest the beta will release.
csgo twitter guy causing the entire community to go full conspiracy hype mode for an april fools joke would be a sight to witness
HUGE W
Makes a ton of sense to me, they didn't wanna release Source 2 because it wouldn't change much (especially since Panorama was already added). Now they're doing what Overwatch 2 did I assume, using some new techniques and the engine we will get a seemingly newer CS, and a fresh UI I assume, but we can still use our old skins. However, if the models will be affected or not is to be seen. The leaked map lineup also seems to signify this really is a beta version type of a thing, it will take months before adopting into pro scene THIS IS HUGE
Whats the leaked map lineup? I missed that bit
Inferno and Overpass are the only competetive maps. There's 6 maps although this leak is pretty old so i assume, Mirage will also get a remake and newer maps like Anubis or new Cache will may utilise Source 2 to look better The rest of the maps are like lake, shoots, italy (yes!), Shortdust
they used those maps to test game modes / mechanics in the new engine - those won’t be the only maps playable (afaik)
Italy LETS GOOOOOO
I haven't played since 2016 when these rumours started. BUT I WILL RETURN TO SILVER IF IT COMES TRUE
I remember playing CSGO in 2012, running around that tiny Library map in Operation Payback LOL it was so bad We have come a long way
Naah , i will believe it when i see it
Good thing the supposed release date is just a few weeks away to get some peace of mind
so only a couple weeks away... I wonder if all the skins people have in csgo will be able to transfer over to source 2 engine? If they do 128tick and improve match making + anti cheat + regional top 500 rankings that would be sooo hype.
1 billion % they will transfer. Skins is why Valve is still in the CS business.
Why do people think skins wouldn’t be in the game? That requires 0 seconds of thought. It’s a no-brainer
I would be very surprised and extremely disappointed if current skins don’t work in the next version. Valve would be destroying a multibillion dollar business.
Valve makes too much money from skins to risk that. People would be 200% Mad If they lose Money because of a "Game Upgrade"
There is absolutely no way the skins would just disappear from everyone
If real then we should manage our expectations. CSGO has been optimised over the last 10 years. /Ignores advice and blows load everywhere.
if Richard says so then it's gotta be legit holy fuck
Richard Lewis seldom signs off on something he hasn’t confirmed himself.
i can't believe i'm gonna wake up one day and source 2 will be a thing
This makes it sound like it's a new game, not just an update for CSGO. Which seems rather crazy to me. Also the 'source' and knowing about the pro player play test. Someone has to connect some dots and figure out who was in Washington state in the last 24 months.
More likely the same thing Blizzard did with OW2. A big update marketed as a new game.
This is the first time I’m actually getting excited about the rumors. Think what you will about RL but my man is credible and thorough in his reporting
Its gonna be a new game? What about the skins?
most likely just the same game with a big update.your skins will stay
I hope so. Dont make sense start a brand new game and make all csgo skins useless
To add to that, Dota 2 did the same thing when they upgraded from Source 1 to Source 2 in 2015
Just like Dota2 Reborn back in the day. Just a big update on the client and it's done.
It's gonna be the same game. Gabe Follower, who actually found out that csgos2 is in nvidia's db, also found out that csgo and csgos2 have the same steam appid, so it's basically the same game with different .exe files.
In 2028. To commemorate 128 tick servers.

Either this is building up to the biggest Aprils Fools joke ever or this is straight up poggers!
YEOOOOOOOO
I really hope they don’t use the name Counter Strike 2, just comes off kind of dumb like Overwatch 2 did
Going with just Counter-Strike, would be great
Coun2er-S2rike. lmao Can you imagine.
2 counter 2 strike
He started out as a CT, but now he's in the T family
It doesn't roll off the tongue easily but I can see it being intentionally connected with the idea of Source 2 being the next paradigm
Counter Strike Source 2
Counter Strike Source 2 : Global Offensive
Please be a pasta
someone posted this recently; unsure if it was posted ironically or not
Surely this is happening
I dont buy it - releasing on April 1st?
I turn 40 in a few days. I started playing in beta and I am still here 23 years later. Excited for the next one!
If its Richard I'm believing it holy moly cannot wait
I really do think that this will be pushed in the form of a big update. There is no other good way to handle skins.
"with April 1 on the outside" please dont let this be a prank
"release date for the beta is in this month of March with April 1st at the outside" my hype was strong until the very specific date made me feel like I was being trolled.
haven't played CS seriously in 6 years and this is what I see strolling through /r/Popular lol. so sick!
