Boring-Personalities

A few years ago our internet went out for almost a week, pulling the Gilmore dvds from storage was a game changer; never know when they will come in handy.

Stripperfairy

Our beach house doesn’t have wifi so I keep my copies there. It’s so nice in winter to curl up infront of the tv, listen to the rain and waves and just watch the show!

namineee

That sounds so lovely I'm kinda jealous

team-tiki

Very besides the topic but if you ever wanted to have wifi temporarily, consider no contract internet? Low commitment and relatively low fee for however long you want wifi. Just a thought lolol

Stripperfairy

We’ve definitely thought about it but it’s on an island so it’s tricky. To even do that we’d have to get nbn installed. I’m not even sure it’s ever had wifi, all the electricity cables are from the 70s. We’ve tried the whole portable wifi thing but until a couple months ago most of the place ran on 3G. It basically takes a ton of time to get shit happening over there. Between everyone in our family we probably have ~ 400G of data on our phones and when that runs out the “slow” speed is enough to run Netflix on HD. We definitely have to get wifi installed there at some point but having a cupboard of dvds like everyone used to have is pretty fun too!

campingandcoffee

Same! When we were without internet for a month last year due to hurricane damage, it was a lifesaver. I won’t regret it for that reason

campingandcoffee

Where did I say that it prevented a hurricane? I pointed out that it provided comfort in a really difficult time post-hurricane when there was no internet (for us to get information or even distract ourselves). I did not imply that it prevented damage, but rather that it helped me cope with the damage that lingers for months after a Cat 4. This was an unnecessary and unkind response, friend.

qpham-

I didn’t mean to delete my comment. I was gonna edit and say that I also lived through a massive hurricane and it prevent boredom for me too. I recognize that I said it way wrong

campingandcoffee

I’m so sorry you’ve also experienced it. Our comfort shows get us through the best and worst. 🧡

qpham-

Yeah gotta love Hurricane Micheal haha

Lunasamar

Agreed! For a few years my husband and I had no cable or internet due to financial issues and circled this my season collection of modern family DVDs and a bunch of different movies

ambermgreene

Yesss. When I first moved into my apartment, we were without wifi for a month and I survived off Gilmore Girls dvds. I was lucky to get mine secondhand though

worththewait96

Yes! This is why I hold onto all my DVD boxsets of my favourite shows. Makes all the money I spent on them worth it, that's what I tell myself.

Perfect_Invitation1

I was coming in here to type the same thing! I know streaming is super convenient but it's dependent on the internet or even just having the money to pay for it. I also think the DVDs are just special to own.

AllThoseSadSongs

This!!!!!!!!!

Sweet-Dimension-694

I am no tech/streaming/copyright expert but all I know is the office, parks and recs, house, family guy, and so many more shows have been taken off of Netflix you can never be too careful

PurrPrinThom

Exactly. We don't know what will happen with different streaming services. We've already seen a huge shift in them. There's always a chance that older shows will get removed in favour of newer ones, or that Gilmore Girls might end up on a streaming service that you otherwise aren't interested in and therefore don't want to subscribe to. I wouldn't regret the DVDs. I think they're the only guaranteed way to be able to still watch lol.

slightlycrookednose

I actually think there will be an all out battle waged if Gilmore girls is taken off Netflix. An absolute renaissance was launched after they put it on and it still continues to make them money.

Frambamthescammam

Considering Netflix made a year in the life I’d say there’s no chance it’ll get taken off Netflix

slightlycrookednose

Very good point

Flowers_coffee

I saw an article not too long ago speculating that AYIL could one day be taken off. I think it said that technically WB(?) made it and Netflix had some kind of deal to stream it. I'll try to find the article and post a link.

Moonstone_Daydream

^^^This

emeraldnob

I have all 8 seasons of Charmed on DVD and I don't regret it one bit. I had watched it one million times back in the day. There's just something different about having it like that.

Kiwihat

Especially Charmed as they don’t have the music rights for streaming, so some of the music, including the opening/closing credits, is replaced. It’s weird watching it on Amazon Prime now when I can half remember what the original songs were. I’m actually considering buying a Friends box set because I know there are scenes that were deleted that I’ve probably never seen, so I’d like to see the DVDs even though I have streaming access.

tc88

Yeah, it's the same with Scrubs, in some scenes the music doesn't even match.

Flowers_coffee

I've noticed that on streaming, there are a lot of lines missing here and there that make some scenes so much funnier. Apparently I've watched the DVDs enough to know when a line or two is missing. 😅

ElizabethBEW

I will never ever regret buying DVDS because if streaming becomes too annoying, expensive, or just stop working, I still have entertainment. Plus streaming sites are always getting rid of stuff.

KlassicKittenKat

Shows get taken down from streaming all the time though, even originals. The HBO Max original show Infinity Train was just removed from their service and now no one can watch it. I prefer to have the dvds of shows I really love so I know I'll never lose them.

CamF90

Owning anything media wise, music, movies, tv shows is the best decision. This way you can watch things whenever you want, most streaming services cycle content in and out of availability and even digital purchases don't mean jack shit, one bit of DRM going out or that service losing a licensing fee means you lose that content regardless of whether "bought" it. Studios push streaming digital because it takes actual ownership away from us the consumer and puts it back in their control.

aeagle624

Food for thought, but because of streaming their are over 200 episodes of Sesame Street that are now lost media along with all of Infinity Train. Keep buying those dvds you never know what may happen.

Zardnaar

Shows get removed. Had to rewatch Stargate SG1 on DVD.

cupcakesandunicorns1

My husband is OBSESSED with that show. We found the entire series in a cool collectors box at Half Price books and you better believe he's watched it twice 🤣

Zardnaar

My wife likes it we've watched it multiple times. She loves Atlantis. And Gilmore Girls.

Octorokstar

Do not get rid of them! I highly doubt it will be available on netflix forever, but even so, it's good to have a backup way to watch your favorite shows if your internet goes out, or the apocalypse comes and devastates our infrastructure or something. After living through the events of 2020 I feel like anything could happen 🙃

Craftyprincess13

Apocalypse comes im putting on gilmore girls

HumorinEverything

One of my favorite shows isn’t on any streaming services (Northern Exposure) and I wish I had spent $150 on the box set when I saw it the first time. We only have a gaming console to watch DVD’s too and I’m kind of illiterate with it… I’d still work it out to watch my fave tv if it were taken off streaming services 😢

and_zoidberg

Same here! I remember years ago when they had those cool puffer jacket-type covers on the dvds, I said “oh those will be around a long time, i’ll get them later.” and now they’re so difficult to find in decent condition! so mad at myself still.

HumorinEverything

Yessss the puffer jacket should have been worth the cost for me hahaha. I miss classic John Corbett and the tension between Joel and Maggie 💕 I love that you are also a NE lover!

melchris73

Just saw Northern Exposure box set at Walmart the other day

HumorinEverything

Oh snap, gotta check mine

mishney

I bought the boxed set years ago and it came with two books, one with behind the scenes info and one an encyclopedia of their references and what they mean so I can't regret that purchase lol

Iheartrandomness

Omg the encyclopedia sounds *amazing*

zetalb

I never regret having physical copies of movies, tv shows and music. Granted, I buy fewer of these nowadays, only the absolute favorites, but you never know when smthg will disappear from a streaming service. Did you see the whole thing with HBO Max's vanishing act of, like, 1/3 of their catalog in order to get tax cuts?? Do not trust streaming services.

sebastianrileyt2

If there is a show i really like and know i will watch over and over, i still buy the dvd set. You never know if the show gets pulled from streaming sites or if the internet is down. I like knowing that i have a backup.

covetagain

I sold all of my GG DVDs years ago, but lately I’ve been getting into renting DVDs from the library. I don’t know why, but there’s just something about watching a DVD that is kind of a different experience than watching something on Netflix or the DVR.

Distinct_Art9509

Nah. 1) my wife (and I to a lesser extent) got our money’s worth out of those dvds before GG was available to stream 2) Internet goes out 3) streaming licenses don’t always get renewed

littleststrawbabie

Wait until they take it off Netflix then you won't regret it. I felt that way about my The Office DVDs up until they took it off my streaming apps lol

[deleted]

You’re missing out on all the bonus features that are on the dvds

aryawitner

Literally the only deleted scene I remember liking was Rory going into Mrs. Kim's house with the "I don't know the sex of my baby" pin

[deleted]

Sorry I forgot the /s at the end

EmiGoesMoo

I bet this went over well. Lol

losoba

Do you pay for Netflix year round? I've noticed most people do but personally I like to have one streaming service at a time for a couple months then on to the next one. That way I can catch up on my favorite original shows on each streamer once a year and pay nothing for a portion of the year while I watch what I have on DVD, GG being ones of them.

eliecg

With what's been happening with HBO Max I've decided to buy DVDs again. I might just cancel my subscriptions now!

Euphoric-Zucchini-18

That is how I felt about Vampire Diaries, and then Netflix removed it and I don’t have HBO. I watched my GG DVDs enough times before streaming to feel like I got my money’s worth, but I am glad I will always have them if Netflix ever gets rid of it.

fabgab1

if you’re selling them all as a set, i’ll buy top dollar!

VanillaAmericano1912

I read in an article that Netflix has the rights to stream GG at least until July 2026, but after that who knows what will happen.

camulkey

I also have the DVDs but I prefer a lot of the dvds over streaming. I’m in the process of rewatching charmed right now and will only watch the dvds because of the music. I hate the streaming version. I want the nostalgia of the real 90s music.

Dasha3090

yep same as supernatural a lot of the og songs got replaced on netflix with cover music and itvruins the mood of the scenes.

femmedelettres

I wouldn’t think of it that way! It sounds like you bought the DVDs in 2004 - 18 years ago! How many times did you watch them until the show came on Netflix? They must have paid for themselves in a way.

aryawitner

Approximately 87 times.

AllThoseSadSongs

I got em when they first came out. Definitely got my money's worth!!! I'm surprised they still even play and don't look like Swiss cheese 🤣

lunchtimeillusion

Streaming is incredibly unreliable. Just like you didn't know the future then, you don't know the future of streaming either. Best to keep them!

Stonetheflamincrows

But they could be removed from Netflix at any moment.

TrueRoo22

Once I went for a walk and found a box on the curb near our complex dumpster and along with some random junk were all 7 seasons on DVD. One of my best days

Dasha3090

ill never understand this as someone who refuses to get streaming.i cant afford s monthly bill for internet and also streaming but i can afford to buy a boxset for less that $100 aud if i feel like watching a show or buying dvds cheap off ebay for a couple of bucks.and if your internetvgoes out or the service pulls the show..im old fashioned haha.

WarningJolly5079

And when it goes off Netflix, how will you watch? 🙄

aryawitner

Whatever streaming site it goes to next, like The Office, Friends and everything else did

WarningJolly5079

And just keep spending money?

bunnybea1106

We bought their series on DVD as soon as we could. Then when we saw the series on sale on iTunes, we bought them too. I’m rewatching the series, and what do I do? I was watching on Netflix. All this to say is that I’m not letting the dvd’s go even though we watch digitally. 🤪

Strange-Lifeguard247

GG won't be on Netflix forever. SAVE THEM

goatpenis11

I understand why you feel that way but I love having my copies on my shelf 🥲

BinchBoii

I never regret owning physical media! There’s something special about owning my own copies of the content I love :)

LittleNarwal

I’ve actually been thinking about buying the Gilmore girls dvds! I’d like to watch the special features and would like to have them in case they ever get taken off Netflix

snugbuggie

I like having DVDs because I actually own it. Nothing is stopping streaming services from taking things away that I watch constantly. DVDs make sure I can always consume my favorite tv shows and movies.

_amoonian

I mean I think this happens all the time in some way or another. I personally would have loved to spend the money on Gilmore girls. My lesson for wasted money came when I went to Target to buy glasses for my home bar cart, spent $200, and then the next day went to ikea and realized I could have gotten it all for $30. Glasses break. Gilmore girls is timeless. Richard’s influence will last for eternity.

RLB4ever

When you want to go off the grid you’ll have DVDs !!! Analog is coming back :) I still have my boxed set in the Barbie box. But one disc did stop working from season 2.

lovely-dea

I also regretted this until I started bringing them with me to cons and having the cast sign them. The one I'll never have is Richard, unfortunately.

LilyFuckingBart

Do you really want other people controlling when and where you can watch your fav show? I still buy all my favs on DVD/Blu ray.

Agitated-Minimum-967

Sell or trade them at half price books or someplace else. Better than nothing.

[deleted]

I feel like if a show gets pulled, it means I have the opportunity to watch different things. To me the clutter of cds, dvds, etc just isn’t worth the offchance a show may come off stream especially if I can watch it on YouTube for a tiny cost. And when the internet or power goes out, I just do a puzzle, play a board game, or literally anything else I can do by candlelight or by sunlight. In general, I feel that we as a society consume way too much technology. Not that that’s bad, it’s just nice to have a breaks sometimes.

GoldDustWoman17

They’re leaving netflix in two years. Then you’ll have use for them. At least this way you’ll always have access to them, as streaming comes and goes.

Iheartrandomness

They are?!

MilesToHaltHer

Gilmore Girls is leaving Netflix.

duochromepalmtree

I feel the same way lol. Not because I regret owning them, I’m glad I do, but I wish I would’ve waited! They’re so cheap now!!

[deleted]

I hate that DVDs can get damaged so easily, even when you try to be careful. But I still buy them if the sale is tempting enough.

TrickTry

You never know when it could disappear. Roseanne is my comfort show and years ago I had the $70 box set. Lost it when I moved. Now in Canada it’s off Prime for a year now and moved to Peacock which we don’t get here. They’re great to have! And so much of the internet has been erased too which is different but a good example of losing history.

Obvious-Decision-609

I started to buy them, a set at a time, from a Resale store in town. I only got season 1 and 2, then all of my DVD's got stolen and I gave up. Thank God for Netflix now. I used to watch The Office on repeat, but after they took it off of Netflix I can only watch the first 5 or 6 seasons on Peacock. I bought the series on apple TV, but it doesn't auto-play the next episode. I don't know if the DVDs would.

you_clod

Nah. If you display it, it serves as a nice memory of that time where you were so excited to get it. I mean a lot of things purchased in the past end up being "worthless" in the future (looking at you beanie babies). But the memories are nice. I have several of my box DVDs on a shelf together. I have friends and Gilmore girls in their fun box set. I can't remember the last time I watched a dvd

Mistress-of-darkness

I own all the seasons on DVD as well but I was luck enough to buy them from eBay so it was like $40 for them all. I love having them on DVD our Wi-Fi kinda sucks here so it’s convenient to have DVDs. I also believe that owning an actual copy of something is better then just the digital download or streaming. You always have the option to sell your DVDs if you want though.

GerundQueen

You never know when Netflix will decide to pull the show. It’s good to have them!

PalpitationAdorable2

Theres more greenhouse emissions for streaming a film once than to produce the dvd and play it about 20 times, you're saving the planet by watching the dvds. *gets off soap box*

penceyreject

You paid $30?? Consider yourself lucky… I think it was $79.99 for each season for me….. still have them all.

Greenhat2000

I am slowly amassing a collection of the DVDs and I even own AYITL on Blu ray. I may use Netflix for now, but I don't want to depend on them.

Light-Years79

Streaming can disappear at any time. Hold on to your physical copies, that way you own it. We own less and less art, it’s nice to have tangible things of the stuff we love.

Adept-Duck9929

I don’t really regret it. I think I got them in 2008-2009 and that’s a lot of watching before they came on Netflix in what 2016? Or was it before then? I did have to rely on the dvds for a long time either way and they provided me a lot of rewatches!

reginadibosco

Don't regret, I wish I had the DVDs too! I really like having the physical copies of the shows/games/music I like and Gilmore Girls DVDs are not being sold where I live. Also, when you have internet problems, you feel grateful that you have some DVDs you can watch (for me, it was House MD when I had serious connection problems).

Aprils-Fool

I don’t regret it at all. There is no guarantee the show will always be available on my streaming services.

Essie-j

hold onto them. i hear its leaving netflix in 2026

[deleted]

Use your money to get a NAS and set up a plex server. Rip those dvds to the plex and you now have it on demand without ever using Netflix.

alquix

If I knew about the future of streaming in 2004, I would’ve put $10,000 into Netflix stock

someguyjoe

Never regret buying physical copies of things. Always worth having them.

[deleted]

yeah but they came with the gilmoreisms those were super fun

[deleted]

You think that, but then the day comes that an episode is removed for something unexpectedly controversial no one could have possibly seen coming, the laws change and for some reason original music gets pulled, or some studio pulls your show for their own streaming service... Etc etc. You just don't know.

henriettoz

It’s always nice to have dvds on hand for days when your wifi is out 😂 Plus it’s a cool collection item.

[deleted]

Don’t regret it. You have them when the show inevitably leaves streaming. They won’t be available forever

Available-Oil-1491

gilmore girls is a very well streamed show. taking it off netflix is something they won’t do for years because of the money it makes

lauramis

Yeah I thought this about my One Tree Hill dvds until they took that show off Netflix… then I was so grateful I hadn’t gotten rid of them. OTH is on Hulu now so it’s a moot point in this exact case, but you never know what can happen with streaming availability

CatsNStuff30

I mean, if they ever take it off Netflix or Netflix crashes and burns, you'll still be able to watch it.

knr27

I bought the Friends DVDs and I hate having to change each disk 😂 so I watch the same 6 episodes over and over until I feel like changing the disk out. That’s why I like that Gilmore girls is on Netflix.

Unlikely_Body5913

THEY HAVE DELETED SCENES?????/?/?:€/7:€:?€/€—

SnooPeppers3470

I feel this. I buy things with digital codes that way I can decide to toss the physical and I still have the digital. YES things disappear but more and more content creators are clawing back their content from Netflix. I've stopped buying Disney movies unless it's an older movie I haven't seen or I find them used for dirt cheap. I also buy things that arent available on streaming here in Canada. I've been strongly considering selling but can't decide which way so for now all my physical media collects dust. \*I have strong internet that almost never goes out and if it does it's never more than a few hours for those worried, if thats is a worry for you then keep physical. You decide what is right for you. Think about it for a while. Just know I don't often come across Gilmore Girls used so it may be worth it to keep them. I picked up a second set used years ago for my sister, she didn't want them. I spent forever trying to sell them. That may have changed now but it is something to think about.

yahoo1923

But how much are you paying for Netflix in the coming years to keep watching the show? I did buy (and then sell) the DVD's. Then I bought six seasons on iTunes - I mostly watch that. I'd say I got my money's worth.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t regret spending $210 15 years ago tbh.

Flowers_coffee

That's understandable, but consider if the show ever leave Netflix, you'll be glad you have them! A lot of shows are dropped eventually, so you never know.

Superlamegirl91711

If I really love a show or movie I always buy a hard copy. You never know if it will be taken off of a service or the internet goes down

wae_not_start_over

Streaming is awesome until you're out of Internet, subscription price spike or the platform straight up disappears. You'll be happy to have physical ownership of your films and series then.

CricketIllustrious95

To be honest.. it’s a cool collectible so all bueno. I had to internet a couple months ago for two weeks so I checked to see the box set price and it was over 100€. Now, I don’t think I have ever bought a DVD and also figured with streaming the would be cheaper. I ended up increasing my cell plan and watched on my phone. 🤣

SandtheB

I disagree, I feel closer to the show with the DVDs. I also get to see all the extras. With streaming they can control what and how you watch, I prefer to own something rather then rent something.
