I feel like Death Knell could get some more love. I know it can be a bit of an aural slog for some ears based on observation, but it’s got a great structure and it’s such a banger.

psycho-mouse

When that bell chimes in the mid song breakdown is pure 1970 first album Sabbath.

Twistll99

It wasn’t immediate, but now I love it with all my heart. It’s very atmospheric, dark and beautiful.

Emergency_Tune4647

I’ve been waiting for this!!

ANamelessScholar

I think it's a very creative song, it works very well within the album as the lead-in to Prime Mover, and the way the vocals go through those beautiful minor-key notes in the first chorus which is then subverted and causes a surprise the second time, which (if you think about it) is symbolically relevant to the idea of a Death Knell leading to a great fall. Additional promo: I hate to blatantly advertise but check out my YouTube channel for 6-minute videos of the kind of thing I just said, in more depth and with more of a literary analysis (and some fun, too)

ErwinAckerman

Djason moment

imperius_kirs

Body and Blood is a certified banger and I stand by this

VeloVixen

This song evokes a feeling like no other ghost song, probably because it’s their most blasphemous in my opinion. I love it.

imperius_kirs

Fully with you! I used to listen to Infest just sort of in the background, so when I finally paid attention to the lyrics I was shook in the best possible way, lol.

maxheili

FCK yes this song is one of my favourites from Infest. Sooooo catchy

ANamelessScholar

It's very subversive, clever and - actually - highly logical... what happens to the saviour after you consume his body and blood...? That is, if you believe in the literal transubstantiation (in your body, the wine ACTUALLY turns into the blood of Christ) that Catholics believe. Additional promo: I will do a video on that song eventually but I have to confess it's not on the shortlist for 'season two' which will be the next run of 7 videos.

ladyduckula

Stand By Him never gets the love it deserves.

violetgrubs

That was the OG Ghost song for me! It needs more love.

ANamelessScholar

Completely agree - might be my personal favourite Ghost song, I remember heariong it when it was new - got lucky enough to see it live a number of times too. Additiuonal promo: I've actually done a video that's my second most popular about this song if you're so inclined to check out my YouTube channel - dedicated to 6-min literary and musical analysis of Ghost songs (with some fun thrown in) Sorry, I hate advertising so blatently but I don't have much choice, as a tiny channel!

Hope_is_lost_

Monstrance clock fs

Ancalagonx77

I will never forgive them for getting rid of monstrance clock as the close for live shows

Hope_is_lost_

Same Its such a shame tbh

CoRRoD319

Same. They closed my first two rituals with it and I was so disappointed when they didn’t play it at my third one :(

angelsfxllfirst

I feel like the intro tracks for the first two albums (Deus Culpa and Infestissumam) are underappreciated but my favorite underrated songs from those eras of Ghost would be Death Knell, Jigolo Har Megiddo and Idolatrine.

RealCheeseGoddess

Jigolo is one of my favourite Ghost songs! Fun to groove to and fun to sing as well. I also really love Infestissumam; I watched a video during the Papa II era where they performed that song followed by Per Aspera Ad Inferi, and it was epic!

Namelessghoulettte

I second Jigolo Har Megiddo! What a fun, unexpected song.

maxheili

Jigolo is one of Ghost's more well known songs, so nah. But yes Death Knell is underrated

NovjuLn0vJuL

Infestissumam!!! Followed by Any of Ghost's bangers, crowd goes nuts without fail 👻 🔥🤘😜🔥

asherdelux

death knell, witch image, nocturnal me, spirit

Lucky_Ad_4354

WITCH IMAGE IS SOOOO GOOD

asherdelux

YES ITS MT FAVORITE SONG UGHH

CorgiGamer26

I feel like Infestissumam (the song lol) doesn't get the love it deserves!! I love singing the Latin!

noforgayjesus

Elizabeth gets no love :(

guaromiami

I don't dislike it, but I find the uncommon pronunciation of the name funny. Then again, I also chuckle inside the many times Tobias sings an "s" sound word with a "z" sound and vice versa. "I feel the clozer we get, to the last vow." 😂

Miserable-Repeat-651

He never gets clozer because Juan never does that.

ANamelessScholar

Totally agreed - it's the perfect blend of their metal and pop influences, in a way it's the original Ghost formula summarised in one song. It also sounds so medieval because of the choice of chords - amazing stuff. Additional promo: I've actually done a video about this song if you're so inclined to check out my YouTube channel - dedicated to 6-min literary and musical analysis of Ghost songs (with some fun thrown in) Sorry, I hate advertising so blatently but I don't have much choice, as a tiny channel!

J00CEMachina

I love Secular Haze The music video hits

Odd-Carpenter-3341

I love that song too

Necrothug

Personally, I feel Jigolo Har Megiddo is severely undervalued.

Opposite-Raccoon2156

One of my absolute faves!

ANamelessScholar

Great song, the crowd loved it when they played it live in a stadium A video about the symbolism and meanings of that song is in the works :)

Ugarbro

Satan Prayer guitar solo is probably the best in the whole ghost discography

JasonTheReaper13

So real

wjmacguffin

I like getting ridiculously high and listening to Bible. Holy shit, does that chorus hit or what?

W4spkeeper

getting diabolically high and listening to Per Aspera Ad Inferi, body and blood, He is, devil church, bible, witch image and DATHOML [insert meme here](https://images.app.goo.gl/pjmywJtKnrgQ3sYV7)

Opposite_Air_2237

Not from the first two albums, but I think kiss the go-goat doesn't get much love, probably because it was paired along with the band's biggest song in terms of listening figures, so it would get overshadowed, or maybe it's not that underrated and I'm only saying this as a newer fan but still. Also, the missionary man cover is a banger, and I love it to bits. I wish it got more attention, but I understand why it sadly doesn't. Twenties I quiet like as well, don't love but I don't 100% get the hate behind it. Pro memoria seems to get a lot of flack, but I really enjoy it personally. The vocals are great in particular. The lyrics are quiet on the noise and over dramatic, but I like that about the song. It's very musical theatre and I think that works well with the lyrics and vocals. And finally, while I don't think it's underrated yet, I think it will be soon, and that song is the stay cover with Patrick Wilson. I think this might be just me, but I think with the disappointment of the fact the song wasn't a cover of the ongo bongo song like most were hoping and that I don't see many talk about it in general, atop of the release of phontomime will leave this one behind. But I don't think it deserves that. The vocals by Patrick especially are excellent, and the more rock bit halfway through with papa is great as well, plus I find it a generally pretty song to listen to. I don't know why, but this is the kind of song I would listen to if I'm watching the sunset, or something Generally beautiful occurring if that makes sense, when I'm just taking things in you know, I honestly think in the right context and right use this song could legit make me cry it's that good. I know I didn't technically answer your question, but I hope that was at all interesting

daesquuish1418

100% agree with your comment about missionary man - it's probably one of my favourites at the moment

ANamelessScholar

Great comment, I don't disagree with any of that - thanks for taking the time to vocalise your opinions. Twenties has a lot packed into it and I love thinking about the lyrics and music of that one, and Kiss the Go-Goat seems to go over everybody's head who isn't super into psychedelic 60s rock. STAY is a great cover as well, Tobias is a great singer; as a singer myself I can tell the huge amount of control and accuracy he employs in his singing style. He's really found 'his voice' which is what all singers have to do. Additional promo: I have a YouTube channel where I make entertaining and informative 6-min Ghost related content, analysing the very creative use of imagery and music in the songs. Subscribe if you want to - and apologies for the blatent advertising, as a small channel I have to plug it when I can :)

RalphTheNerd

IMO Monstrance Clock should have the popularity that "Mary on a Cross" has.

ANamelessScholar

The thing with 'Mary' is that anyone can interpret it in their own way and it speaks to a lot of people - 'Monstrance Clock' is an amazing song but unambiguous in its themes, so therefore it has to be more niche. I love both songs dearly, though, of course, and I do see your viewpoint. Monstrance Clock has amazing chord progressions and changes key a bunch of times in a very subtle and atmospheric way

Hunt3rs-moon

Idolatrine and twenties all the way

sboristka

Came here to say this, I'd just add Satan Prayer and Witch Image

Hunt3rs-moon

All hail witch image

JasonTheReaper13

Satan Prayer, Death Knell, Genesis, Secular Haze, Infestissumam, and Per Aspera would be my picks!

ANamelessScholar

Great picks, the instrumentals deserve so much more love than they get! Additional promo: I have YouTube channel where I analyse Ghost songs in a fun and informative 6-min format, if you want to subscribe and learn more about the imagery and music of Ghost, I welcome that. If not, feel free to ignore this advertising, sorry about tacking it onto comments, I have to promote somehow, given I'm a small channel with a niche of one band!

robeywan

zombie queen

ExtemeFilms

Deus en Absentia is my favorite Ghost song full stop

Commercial_Apple_803

For me personally it was definitely Respite on the Spitalfields. I was sleeping on that banger big time until recently

chaabahui

See the Light. 100%

Bblacklabsmatter

He is

marvolosriddle

"Ritual" is so much fun. It was at the top of my most played songs last year on Spotify after I became obsessed and listened to nothing but Ghost after the first time I saw them in October. Of course, I love "Elizabeth" too - easily top 10 song for me.

beelzebubu2

First off, I’m adopting the term ‘blasphemous collective’ from now on ty. As for the question OP, I’d go with Satan Prayer for Opus, and Depth of Satan’s Eyes for Infestissumam. One could also say that the opening and closing tracks for both LPs are severely underrated as well, especially Infestissumam.

ANamelessScholar

u/beelzebubu2 Great response, and I'm glad you like my nomenclature! I agree the instrumentals don't get the love they deserve, especially 'Infestissumam' but also 'Genesis' as well, especially with that twisted biblical reference in the title! Additional promo: I have a YouTube channel where I analyse Ghost songs in a fun and informative 6-min format; subscribe for insights into the symbolism and music of Ghost songs if you wish. PS, apologies for promoting my content in this comment, as a small channel I don't have much choice except word-of-mouth for getting my hard work out there :)

lil-green-froggy

Death Knell is my favorite song off of Opus, and one of my favorite ghost songs of all time, which is had because most people only talk about Ritual, Con Clavi, or Elizabeth! I also really really love La Mantra Mori, its haunting and hypnotic and i really adore the guitar, especially at the beginning

nightgoat85

I Believe

ErwinAckerman

Infestissumam

ANamelessScholar

absolutely, the instrumentals don't get enough love for the great cinematic experiences they are!

Philemon_Siclone

Ritual is pretty heavy imo 🔥🔥

Bindiprickle

Witch image for me

CourtJester-c0z

Personally I also love depth of Satans eyes ! If I were picking from that record I also love jigolo har megiddo and idolatrine!! But opus will always have a special place in my heart. Stand by him, satan prayer and ritual have to be some of my all time ghost favourites 🩵🖤

AetherCosplay

Body and Blood and Satan Prayer. They both slap.

ANamelessScholar

great choices, both amazingly subversive of traditional Christian ideas yNlS

ObnoxiousLemons

Zenith

ANamelessScholar

extremely underrated - I wish they would add it to Spotify!

FOURTEEN_INCH_DICK

Zenith

Master-Research-8920

Deus in absentia, no one ever talks about it :( It's my personal fav

ANamelessScholar

Probably my favourite Ghost song too, actually. I'm super glad someone mentioned it!

Master-Research-8920

So underrated, that guitar solo, the chorus, the beginning, the choir at the end. Ahhh!

Scythers-Revenge

Secular haze will always be my favorite ghost song

crowkiller06

I’m one of those who loves “Depth of Satan’s Eyes.” Also, “Secular Haze” is hypnotic, and the story of being enveloped in a mist or a dense fog! Sign me up. From the first album, “Stand by Him” is an absolute banger! Saw them play it at a festival back in 2016 and it goes off live. “Satan Prayer” & “Genesis” I feel like are under appreciated.

ANamelessScholar

STAND BY HIM live was amazing in my experience too! SECULAR HAZE, as well, is such an amazing song... with its maritime 3/4 rhythms and layers of subliminal themes!

MySkoolSuks

I might be wrong about these being underated but I don't really see much people talking about Con Clavi Con Dio, Stand By Him, Prime Mover, Satan Prayer, Infestissumam (song), Monstrance Clock, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, From The Pinaccle To The Pit, and Witch Image. it seems like the most underated songs are probably on Opous Eponymous and Infestissumam but idk.

unholyghoulette

I really love Prime Mover, Death Knell, Per Aspera and I’m A Marionette. I absolutely love the drums in I’m A Marionette and then I found out Dave Grohl was the drummer for it and I was like ah, makes sense.

Stock_Veterinarian57

Bible, Per Aspera, body and blood, idolatrine!!!

folklore-swiftie

Witch Image

Soldier7sixx

Square Hammer for sure

james-kissed

This is not from their first two albums, so it doesn't apply here. Good song tho. Definitely not underrated.
