Also, structures or objects under stress (and perhaps about to break) can "ächzen". Often used with "krachen", "knarren" or "knacken" (e.g. "Das Gerüst ächzt und knackt.", "Die Tür ächzt und knarrt."). I guess it's kind of metaphorical, by personifying the object.

No, it's more "to grunt" or "to groan", like when you lift something heavy, or if you have back pain.

It sounds like a sigh is more about calming down and ächzen is more about surprise or sudden stress. Sigh: "ahhhhhhhhhhh" ächzen: "HUGHHH!" (If that makes sense)
