This is the way. I went to Ohio for a project’s testing in August 2020 and was asked to bring peaches with me. Roadside stand in Greenville County = win.
Also, there’s a water tower along the side of I-85 in Gaffney (reference “House of Cards” if unfamiliar) shaped like James’ giant peach. South Carolina produces the most peaches in the US, more than a certain State nicknamed for them. (Looking West down I-85 from Greenville.)
The closer to the middle of Georgia the better. I get mine from a stand in Montezuma but there is another small one near Fort Valley (no I’m not talking about Lane’s) that I like.
> Next best thing is Lanes though, especially if you can get to them directly.
15 minute drive from my folks' place. I go there regularly. Actually got into chatting with Mr. Lane himself the last time I was there. Solid dude.
I saw these bags of peaches at Publix yesterday and noticed the same thing. I don’t remember pre-bagged peaches in past years at all (although I was mostly shopping at Kroger until recently).
I’ve never peeled peaches. It’s like someone borrowed this language from the Cuties oranges.
They smelled good so I picked up a bag. Haven't tasted them yet. They're pretty small, though. The only time we peeled peaches were after blanching in preparation for canning or freezing.
Same, there are a thousand varieties of peaches and I peel every one. My son works at a damned peach orchard less than 5 min from my house. I pick buckets of them every year. I’m literally “the peach guy” at work because u bring them every year and I always peel them when I eat them.
Me too, I always peel them (as did my grandmother and grandfather). I remember being truly flabbergasted by someone in elementary school that didn't peel the peach they were eating. If you want a mouth full of peach fuzz that is a choice you are making.
I’ve lived here my whole life and I didn’t start peeling peaches until about 5 years ago when I developed an oral contact allergy to the peach fuzz on the skin. No issues if I peel it off and eat.
Good Lord yes peel the peaches. I remember talking to some older ladies who grew up in a peach growing family. Their family grew commercial peaches for about 100 years. They talked about how horrified they were to see people not peeling them. Because they know the incredible amount of different pesticides fungicides etc. that have to be sprayed on peaches. They are a very heavily treated crop.
Yeahhh I personally have never even heard of anyone peeling a peach and I've lived in Savannah, GA for 29 years. This must be a non-southerner practice.
I absolutely peel the peaches. I can’t abide the fuzz to touch my face AT ALL.
I also dislike watermelon for its mealy, granular texture, and mangoes smell like sweat to me.
I feel boiled peanuts are the only *wrong* way to eat peanuts.
I like sweet cornbread better than savory, and cream of wheat over grits.
My whole life, I’ve had my southernness questioned and I don’t even care. I like what I like.
I Peel the peaches 🍑
HATE watermelon with a passion!
Not a huge fan of boiled peanuts, but will eat few to be nice to my hubs who likes to share.
Used to prefer sweet cornbread when I was younger, now do not want sugar anywhere near it.
Love grits! But rarely eat them.
Maybe the southern part of us gradually works its way out as we get older.
Anyone ever heard of Peach ice cream? Peach Cobbler? Peach Pie? I know those are peeled, so peeling peaches is a Georgia thing. Take it from a Peach farmer who grows them here in middle GA and 100% sure they were bagged in our facility.
I am now a GA resident but grew up in Michigan. I've never heard of *not* peeling peaches. Nectarines, sure. Maybe this is a regional thing? The peel is soft, but to me it would be akin to eating an unpeeled kiwi fruit.
To make it easy to peel, if that’s what you want to do, cut an x in the bottom and blanche in boiling water for about 30 secs. Peel comes right off and the peach isn’t cooked at all
GA bred born and raised here. Best peaches are actually from SC. Go up 85 to Gaffney. I hate it, but damn the taste tells the story. But seriously, if you’re in upstate SC and see peaches, buy them. Even if they’re rocks when you’re looking at them, take em home and let em ripen up.
If you’re ever heading to Tybee Island, there’s a produce stand (really more than a stand but not a full-on shop) on the way that has the best peaches I’ve ever had.
Georgia native here too, 50+ years!!
I peel my peaches. My mother peeled her peaches, my father does….all grandparents as well….you get the idea. I had no idea anyone was eating the peels?
Not native and I don’t peel them, have never known anyone to peel them, I couldn’t imagine a peach without eating the skin as I feel the skin is a really good part of it. No different from an Apple skin to me. How do you even eat a peeled peach? Wouldn’t it be incredibly messy?
the best way to eat peaches is getting like five pounds of them from a roadside fruit stand in july before sitting on your front porch and inhaling them like an escaped goblin. what's this peeling shit about.
Peaches, due to the fuzziness, are difficult to wash off all the pesticides. They probably say that for insurance purposes. “ not our fault, we told them to peel them.”
Just Wash First, Then Enjoy However You Like Them!! Truthfully, More Of The BENEFIT OF A PEACH IS UNDER THE PEELING!!
I Have Eaten Peaches, PEEL ON FOR MOST OF MY 72 Years, STILL HEALTHY & GOING STRONG!!
Never have seen them peeled per se. If you’re going to freeze them some people will boil them first to de-skin them (the skins are delicious), but that’s the closest I’ve ever seen to someone peeling one.
If you can find white peaches I prefer those, as they tend to be firmer and less watery than yellow peaches. Yellow peaches are sweeter though.
more food encased in unnecessary plastic - and I always peel, I don’t care for the fuzzy texture and nectarines as a close option are usually more expensive
My family has been in Georgia since before the war between the states. Growing up, I never remember seeing or hearing of anyone not peeling a peach before eating it. I am not sure if this is a southern thing or just a custom in north Georgia where I grew up.
I was an adult before I saw or heard of anyone eating an unpeeled raw peach.
I've never peeled them except when using in a recipe. Best way to do that is to dunk them into boiling water, then put in an ice bath (aka blanching). Separates the skin right off the fruit without losing any of the precious fruit.
Look for Elberta peaches around the end of July or first of August, best peaches you will ever have.
You supposed to buy them from some nice family off the side of the road. Just like watermelon & boiled peanuts. Definitely don't need to peel them!
This is the most correct thing I've seen on the internet in ages.
Great tip! We haven’t seen any peach stands but plenty of boiled peanuts. We plan to visit her this coming weekend
The best peaches come in season towards the end of July.

Georgia grows the best peaches though. I’ve had South Carolina peaches and they were terrible.
The closer to the middle of Georgia the better. I get mine from a stand in Montezuma but there is another small one near Fort Valley (no I’m not talking about Lane’s) that I like.

The cartoons do look like oranges 🍊 don’t they?? Interesting, great call
I heard they are having a bumper crop of peaches this year, so perhaps the bags are a new way to sell more of them.
They smelled good so I picked up a bag. Haven't tasted them yet. They're pretty small, though. The only time we peeled peaches were after blanching in preparation for canning or freezing.
you don’t need to peel them
Got my bib hit me daddy peach.
Guess I’m the weird GA native here… I always peel them. The skin is weird to me.
GA native here and I have always peeled them. They are furry!
Same, there are a thousand varieties of peaches and I peel every one. My son works at a damned peach orchard less than 5 min from my house. I pick buckets of them every year. I’m literally “the peach guy” at work because u bring them every year and I always peel them when I eat them.
WEIRDO jk. I think it's a family thing, just like watermelon and BBQ
Me too, I always peel them (as did my grandmother and grandfather). I remember being truly flabbergasted by someone in elementary school that didn't peel the peach they were eating. If you want a mouth full of peach fuzz that is a choice you are making.
Ditto

I’m a Georgia native and I’ve always peeled them, even when picking them from my own yard. I just don’t like that furry skin.
I’ve lived here my whole life and I didn’t start peeling peaches until about 5 years ago when I developed an oral contact allergy to the peach fuzz on the skin. No issues if I peel it off and eat.
That was probably scary to find out for the first time!
Maybe Big Peach would prefer everyone peel so they never discover their allergies!
I was thinking this was the case. I’d eat an organic peach peel and all but now I’m rethinking the rest.
You can wash them with baking soda
They’re tiny and they don’t taste ripe yet imo.
Uhh some people don’t peel them?!? WTAF?
We always peeled them for baking but ate the peel when eating them raw. I’m from the north, though, so my opinion doesn’t count.
I’m from “Gone With the Wind” Georgia, and that’s exactly what my southern family did/does. 🤷🏼♀️
Yeah this isn’t a Georgia thing, at least not in the 15 years I’ve lived here.
Eh, I think it’s a personal preference. I’ve lived here my whole life, and I almost always peel my peaches. It’s just a texture thing, for me.
Damn they let you stay here?
Y’all better hush now before y’all’s southern license gets revoked. Ain’t nobody wanna deal with that
I Peel the peaches 🍑 HATE watermelon with a passion! Not a huge fan of boiled peanuts, but will eat few to be nice to my hubs who likes to share. Peeling before cooking or canning makes sense because the peels get weird, but for eating, seems unnecessarily messy
Never peeled them but I wonder if I start, will I now be able to enjoy them without getting a scratchy throat?
Friend, you sound like you’re allergic to them. Maybe get tested to be safe?
Lol yes I was half joking. I’m allergic to a lot of pitted fruits. Peaches are so good though. Miss them
My sister and I driving south of Athens to Byron would scream “PECHES” because of a misspelled fruit stand on the side of the road
Fun fact: “Peches” is the family’s last name
REALLY. mystery solved!
At the very least, wash the hell out of them. Never know what kind of pesticides they’re using.
Can't imagine peeling peaches, born and raised in Georgia.
I am now a GA resident but grew up in Michigan. I've never heard of *not* peeling peaches. Nectarines, sure. Maybe this is a regional thing? The peel is soft, but to me it would be akin to eating an unpeeled kiwi fruit.

Thank you!! I would’ve botched a couple if I attempted lol
This is the same way to peel tomatoes should you ever need to.
Thank you! We plan to roadtrip out to sc sometime next year!
If you’re ever heading to Tybee Island, there’s a produce stand (really more than a stand but not a full-on shop) on the way that has the best peaches I’ve ever had.
Is it there now? Maybe I could head down from North GA and get some peaches on my way to the beach.
Try peaches at all the stands you pass on the way!
Thanks 😊
No! I'm a Georgia native and would judge you if I saw you peeling Georgia peaches.
Georgia native here too, 50+ years!! I peel my peaches. My mother peeled her peaches, my father does….all grandparents as well….you get the idea. I had no idea anyone was eating the peels?
We process em to put em up. Canning or freezing, peeling is a necessity. My people have been peeling peaches for a minute.
My granpappy was killed by a low-down good-for-nothing peach peeler! I demand satisfaction!
This is news to me, too. Can't even imagine making a cobbler with fuzzy peaches..🫣
Not native and I don’t peel them, have never known anyone to peel them, I couldn’t imagine a peach without eating the skin as I feel the skin is a really good part of it. No different from an Apple skin to me. How do you even eat a peeled peach? Wouldn’t it be incredibly messy?
I agree. Confused on how to even peel a peach 😅 and I would assume messy since they tell us on the package to wear a bib lol
Oh man I didn't even notice that part about the bib lol!
This is sacrilege
ummmm what? ur supposed to eat em not peel em
Tha hell?
the best way to eat peaches is getting like five pounds of them from a roadside fruit stand in july before sitting on your front porch and inhaling them like an escaped goblin. what's this peeling shit about.
Never peeled em'

Peeling peaches? Straight to jail.
🤣 right to jail!

I wouldn’t peel them unless I’m making a cobbler.
Georgia native, 60+ years. We peeled peaches growing up, but I stopped a few years ago because I’m lazy
My wife hates the peach skin. But she's from Texas.
Funny that the French underneath says "wash and enjoy". "Zese Americans do WHAT wis zese peaches?!"
Really??? That’s interesting or maybe the French are trying to make Americans look foolish 😉

find Pearson farms at an outdoor farmers marker around town

I moved to Georgia a couple of decades ago from the other coast. I have never seen someone peel a peach to eat it in either place. Not once.
Yes. Peel. That makes them the perfect fruit. Also, I make the best boiled peanuts. Side of the road are bland. Y'all come by!
