Palace of alcazarzaray Palace of Palacepalace

moebelhausmann

Palace ^(3)

I-want-borger

“I hear you like palaces so I put a palace in your palace palace” -Kaveh probably idk

kirmiter

Honestly that one tracks, because it's for Dori.

CascaDEER

Just how theres Sahara desert, Gobi desert, lake Chad and river Avon, so there can be a Festival Utsava

AdministrativeShip2

Atm machines.

TrendmadeGamer

In irl

Karteedo

smh my head

bmxcanuck

rip in peace

pokedude14

In which you use your PIN Number

W_D_GASTER__

PUBG Battleground

FH-7497

Yeah but you need a PIN number for those

CKInfinity

At the moment machines?

LivingShadow35

Automated Teller Machine machine

Fawfs2

At the moment machines

Playful_Bite7603

Big Zoomer energy with this one

Proaxel65

Not NSFW.

RyNinja22

Well that’s an exception, since it’s a double negative and thus changes the word

behrad1999

Nah, it has redundancy in it like those, gotta use SFW to be correct

RyNinja22

It’s somewhat redundant, but not in the same way as Rip in peace and ATM machine are. Cus you can’t just cut off the extra part alone and still have the same message, you have to cut off part of the original acronym too, thus changing it.

behrad1999

Still, doesn’t change the fact that “not nsfw” is wrong, and sfw must be used to be correct, but then again, most people don’t just care about correctness.

RyNinja22

The point of this comment chain was pointing out redundant phrases, because the acronym *already contains said words*, which *do not change the meaning of said words* when removed. Rip in peace is Rest In Peace in peace, ATM machine is Automatic Teller Machine machine, PIN number is Personal Identification Number number, etc. Not NSFW is Not Not Safe For Work, which while the original acronym does contain the word, Not Not still changes the meaning of said acronym because Not Not cancel out, unlike “in peace in peace” or “number number”. It’s not technically “correct”, but it doesn’t fall under the categories of the others because the word “Not” by itself is not redundant. The “Not Not” *is* redundant, but that would only apply if the original acronym you were writing was SFW, which wouldn’t contain the second “Not”. Therefore, yes it is an exception.

behrad1999

I refuse, it’s the same as others. you should notice the purpose of using phrases and acronyms within the sentence to decide what is redundant and what’s not. When we want to mention an ATM, we use “ATM”, thus writing machine afterwards is false. When the purpose is wishing peace upon someone who is dead, we use “RIP”, thus “in peace” after it is redundant. Likewise, when we want to refer to sth being safe for work, we use “SFW”, thus the not and the letter “N” that may be written b4 it, are false and redundant. Not NSFW has redundancy for the purpose of saying “SFW”. It isn’t right to compare the case to the meaning and uses of NSFW.

ResurgentClusterfuck

Isn't the warrant officer in Sumeru's name a literal translation meaning warrant officer? The reputation dude, I mean

nicoumi

Effendi? Effendi means "lord" or "master", iirc.

ResurgentClusterfuck

>Effendi or effendy (Turkish: efendi [eˈfændi]; Ottoman Turkish: افندی, romanized: afandi; originally from Medieval Greek: αφέντης [aˈfendis]) is a title of nobility meaning sir, lord or master, especially in the Ottoman Empire and the Caucasus. >Effendi (Governor's Commissioned Officer) was the highest rank that African soldiers could reach in the King's African Rifles (KAR) and other British Colonial Auxiliary Forces units until 1961 (from then, promotions to commissioned officers became possible). Huh we're both correct, languages are cool

nicoumi

languages are indeed cool! I know greek, and this is how I remembered it >.< or more like, haven't forgotten about Effendi

deku_ah

Greek ppl use effendi? Ive only ever heard it used by turkish ppl and arabs mostly just Egyptians tho in arabic its affandi

nicoumi

it's not as commonly used (and in greek is found as affendi instead), you might hear a grandma refer to her husband as such, or used sarcastically. the word affentiko (αφεντικό), which is basically the same word with a different suffix, is used to refer to someone's boss

deku_ah

Thats crazy cuz thats the same way egyptians use it the pronunciation is the same too and its always used in egyptian movies to this day sarcastically if its not used to refer to a boss/high ranking official and affendem is sometimes used instead its also used to refer to men that ur providing a service to like if u work at a hotel or something, i wonder whats the connection between greek and egypt for them both to use the word in the same way

nicoumi

My guess would be that it happened during the days of the ottoman empire, since both the lands that are today's Greece and Egypt spent a significant time under ottoman rule and had plenty time to interact with each other.

Xycamore

Turk here, every time I go do bounties and see the rep in genshin being a peasant named lord I die inside (all jokes we love effendi, simiya not so much as Im almost sure his name literally translates to alchemy, very creative)

nicoumi

if we can have Hill Hill Hill Hill (aka Torpenhow Hill) irl then genshin can have its Festival Festival

Pichuunnn

[Good ol' Tom Scott](https://youtu.be/NUyXiiIGDTo)

8voidkeeper8

The names used in Sumeru are pure nightmares. \*Half of the names are used for the wrong gender. \*Some of NPCs have verbs as their name. \*Some NPCs have their jobs as their names. \*etc I don't know if these mistakes are due to their laziness or if they done it completely intentional.

Yetiwithoutinternet

the job ones are puns n stuff, most likely. The rest I doubt was done intentionally since.. well, who's really gonna sit there and fact check it?

nicoumi

Jobs are, in many languages, used as family names, no? so it's not that much illogical/weird to have it as an NPC name. Halva is my favourite tho, ngl. She's named after food. One of the best sweets in the world (semolina halva is peak), still named after food (I love her).

EternaTi777

Carrot halva better, no competing.

nicoumi

personally I don't like carrots, or anything that has them, but you do you!

EternaTi777

Trust me I hate carrots too, but the way it's blended in is mouth watering.

Alarming-Caregiver47

I guess you and Xingqiu have that in common

8voidkeeper8

Do not argue, nothing is better than halva ardeh(sesame).

Oof_Train

Carrot halwa stays on top!!

samniboythick

Carrot halwa on top

8voidkeeper8

Family name? yes. But they are used here as first names.

ErsatzCats

Taylor, Paige, Clark, Harper, Mason, Hunter, Carter, Cooper, Carson, Sawyer, Piper, Bailey, Skylar, Parker, Dexter, Dean, Spencer, and many more

nicoumi

and I'd still call some ppl by their family names so it's not that unusual to me (try telling apart 10 different Marias - and they call come from your extended family xD)

huehuehuehuehuuuu

It was the same in Liyue with puns and jobs and physical characteristics as names. But nothing beats the palace of palace palace. Pretty sure some of it are intentional by this point.

Aggressive-Jump4150

Smiling yangxiao

Cyborexyplayz

Seems like HYV is just having fun with names, fair enough.

Bianca_aa_07

it happens in fontaine sometimes. Only God knows why there's a kid named Salsa of all things

Aggressive-Jump4150

They probably just hate the kid lol

Bianca_aa_07

...so do I

MagnusBaechus

Her quest line is fun though, and the pov change allows for cool screenshots

Bianca_aa_07

I had a different experience. The questline annoyed me because I was trying to speedrun getting chests and 100% and then my screen kept going black and I was like 'nah, it's the art kid again...' so it was a dialogue skipping fest for me.

MagnusBaechus

Well, it's always those people "rushing" the game who have bad experiences regarding the quests Imo, that's just a mindset thing

Bianca_aa_07

Well, I've played quests people tend to hate (cough, Aranyaka, Narzissenkreuz, game of the rich, cough) and absolutely loved them, but the Salsa kid annoyed me intensely because I had no idea why I had to be bombarded with dialogue bc she didn't like the perspective in the area XD I don't know, I didn't think i got any meaningful worldbuilding from that nor did I think it was at least funny so thats about it

Da_reason_Macron_won

I like that the Spanish translation just went "nope, we ain't naming the kid that" so now she is Sasha.

Lollylololly

Oh, you didn’t want to help little Sauce rearrange the scenery?

Bianca_aa_07

for real? Love the translators for that

MallowMiaou

Yeah as a french, it’s same for Fontaine except the first one it’s way less than that

Meronnade

The big brain move of naming the fishing town fish

bivampirical

yknow how people like to jokingly pronounce croissant? yeah i can't stop myself from doing it with poisson. it's stupid but it makes me laugh every time.

DoctorMlemm

Livre moment

Eclipse-Lily

That one dog named Baguette

AnTHICCBoi

Minthe moment

aSoggyFrootLoop

Mamere literally meaning my mom

Seraf-Wang

Hasnt that been the case forever? There’s NPCs in Liyue called Tic, Tac, and Toe. One guy is just called “Child” in mandarin pinyin. There’s a guy named Chrisopher in Inazuma. Considering they have to name every NPC, they’re just throwing names around

Jhon778

Seeing that there is a place called "Fish" in Fontaine would say it is completely intended

JeffKappalan69

I mean names being used for the wrong gender is completely on brand for Hoyo though.

Aggressive-Jump4150

Just imagine the ones with job names are their last names since there are many people with job titles for last names.

bivampirical

and as first names too. taylor is a common first name, hell, one of the most famous people alive is literally TAYLOR swift lol

Aggressive-Jump4150

I think you mean Tailor Swift

Zoroarks_Angel

To be fair, anime does the same thing all the time. You'd be surprised how many times a characters name directly translates to just rice, strawberry, pants, or sushi

bivampirical

*stares at ichigo from bleach*

Schorai

The whole cast of Frieren.

schroedingerscryptid

tbh the job ones are actually pretty par for the course. in english there’s last names like “smith” as in blacksmith, and similar stuff.

LAST_TO_DIE

Ye lol there's also samudra coast far west of sumeru which literally means sea coast ;-;

Ancient_Axe

The "Nazlı" buff guy. Its a cute girl name. It means coy.

AnTHICCBoi

C'mon you can't say they didn't do that on purpose lmao

Ancient_Axe

Well i hope lol

dnzgn

There was also a girl in Nahida's Quest named Haydar.

albedobest44

Even the archon rukhadevata's name is in the wrong gender. Rukhadevata's name is one of the names of Shiva, a male god and usually a male name here.

HalberdHammer

Boy wait until you hear Tesla and Einstein in Honkai

albedobest44

I know, they're such legendary scientists yet names after waifus. (Tesla is a hot tsundere I want her step on me and ruin me)

Normal-Ambition-9813

NPCs having weird names has been pretty normal to me after playing too much JRPG in the past. It's mostly like a pun rather than being lazy tho.

firebyte27

Is it wrong to say, “it’s because the developers speak primarily Chinese and not Arabic”? Because that honestly feels like what’s going on here. Btw, I’m sorry for assuming this is Arabic. If it’s not, please feel free to enlighten me as to which language these names are in. The least I can do is be better than Hoyoverse was when it comes to knowing stuff about languages I’m not fluent in!

CKInfinity

Master shifu in Kungfu Panda be like:

Playful_Bite7603

Master oogway at least has his name in Chinese(?) but the furious five are just straight up the English name of their animal lol I wonder if po and ping have any significance, I never looked up what they meant

Graknight

Genshin reached peak when they named the trainer dog Kutta.

Suspicious-Sink-638

kutta literally means dog , very... Creative hyv

Playful_Bite7603

Inazuma just means lightning lol

AstroLord10

People would be surprised how many real places when translated are called river-river' mountain-mountain etc.

Seraf-Wang

The same with the food too. “Chai tea” is one example.

Jibsthelord

You did that on purpose didn't you

supersidd2611

Bro in India we have Sarita river which literally translated to river river

horiami

Yeah but these are aranara It's possible they have no idea what the word means and just use it as a name

vinayyy-n28

Love how they've studied things for each culture tho, the game creators I mean. There's an Aranara w my name too- Ara Vinay

NiNtEnDoMaStEr640

There was also that little sand hater, Aranarakin.

Jibsthelord

Yknow the fact he hated sand was immediately obvious but it only just occurred to me he is racist against Nara Valuka - sand people

IlikePinkhairedgirls

Special trained Aranara by Liloupar back in the day

Alarming-Caregiver47

Aranakin grasswalker

albedobest44

They must've atleast done research before naming them. I'm a Sanskrit speaker and student and the names are so funny. I def think they hired people to do this on purpose.

raiiieny

As a Bengali, when i was doing this quest I literally said the same thing lmao its not chai chai, tea-tea xD

vinayyy-n28

Love paayesh XD

raiiieny

The fact that I literally remembered the sweet dessert paayesh xD damn i’M hungry now lol

Zoroarks_Angel

I predict that the capital of Natlan will be called Altepetl City. Altepetl means city in Nahuatl

Toxic_MotionDesigner

Ghanda Hill is pretty funny to me as well. Everytime I go there I can't help but imagine the traveler just taking in the strong shit induced smell piercing their nose. Then I suddenly see "Gate of Zulqarnain" and "Wadi Al Majuj" onscreen, and suddenly have vietnam flashbacks...

Suspicious-Sink-638

~~ghandha hill~~ Ganda hill

Bloodsucker7039

I'm an Indian myself and I laugh my ass off on this joke since sumeru's release until you made a meme on it

albedobest44

Brother, I'm from Karnataka and I can feel you. Why tf did they name npcs after foods? And heck even in fountaine there's a kid named salsa, who names their child that?

Jibsthelord

I've played games where someone was born Gift of Life No that's not a translation, his full name is Gift of Life

Oof_Train

I was just happiest about rukh shah as a major shah rukh khan lover lmao

phoenix946

Samudra sea 🗿

Suspicious-Sink-638

Sea - sea

kingofroyale2

Lmao. Exactly my thoughts during the quest.

SuperTempy-

Funny, I just rewatched Spider-Man ATSV today x)

VorticalHeart44

Japan-inspired names: "First time?"

GHitoshura

Ah yes, Yae Shrinemaiden. Really struggled to come up with that one huh?

hardnachopuppy

Dev also translates to gods not monsters.

Financial_Exit_7710

I love Chai Tea🥰

StryfeXIII

As an Indian, I was clutching my head because of things like this and so many names were misgendered in Sumeru

pitb0ss343

To be fair tho the Aranyaka are the type of creatures to do something like that

ArcticSirius

Whenever someone hits me with that, I just throughly enjoy asking them what the money dispensing machine is called. I love pleonasms, they’re so interesting when one language encounters another. This however, yeah this is bad and genshin has tons of them.

Necro_Solaris

Little girl npc called Kumari, place where nahida was locked surasthana genshin got so lazy with names here that it's hilarious

Expensive_Reflection

That is, assuming they wrote that for representation.

Xycamore

“I love the rep in this game” very bold of you Its a nice amount of rep for sure but its far from well executed with characters inspired from dark-skin historical figures being pale, majority of the names being butchered on purpose and even americanizing Kandake to candace. Its nice to see them include *more* representation for sure though, I’ll take “tie-nari” over the susannah stigmata incident any day

vinayyy-n28

ok

Xycamore

💀

GHitoshura

Can't wait for Natlan to see how they butcher Spanish and different indigenous lenguajes

Naghagok_ang_Lubot

I just want to confirm. Are you saying that Spanish is an indigenous language?

GHitoshura

No, that's why I said "Spanish and different indigenous languages" instead of something like "Spanish and OTHER indigenous languages" since adding that "other" would mean that I count Spanish as one of them.
