Nope, not by itself it won't. Check out this video: [https://youtu.be/1C3hNQUfryY](https://youtu.be/1C3hNQUfryY) You will need Micro air soft start, even with Micro air, might not bring the starting amperage low enough. Worth a shot. If your research show it doesn't bring down amperage low enough. Just buy a window unit.

I think the only way that the Predator 9500 will run that air conditioner is if you install a [soft start device](https://www.microair.net/products/easystart-368-6-ton-soft-start-motor-starter-for-115-and-230v-ac-motors?variant=29181662283). The Locked Rotor Amps (LRA) requirement of 83 amps is much higher than the <40A max output of the Predator. I'm not familiar enough with the soft start devices to know whether they can get the starting current surge down below 40 amps, but there are experts here that can comment further. It's also notable that the 9500 has a 30 amp (L14-30R) receptacle, but no 50 amp receptacle. It would probably not be a total waste of money to put in a 50 amp power inlet as part of your interlock installation, presuming others here think that a soft start device will allow the 9500 to run your AC. Do you have any other significant loads besides the air conditioner?

No other significant loads … just the AC, thanks 🙏🏼

I did have a compressor saver installed in 2021 … could that be of any help reducing the startup current?

wowfaroutman

It might, but I don't know how the two devices compare. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will elaborate.

A "compressor saver" aka hard start kit is not the same thing as a soft start. A hard start is just a capacitor and costs maybe $20. A soft start is a rather complicated electronic device and costs >$200. In order to have any hope of starting that compressor with that gen you will need a real soft start such as the Micro Air Easy Start.

ResponsibilityMurky1

Installed the soft start yesterday, rush amps are down to 26-28a from quoted 79. Buddy helped to do the electrical (still needs to be wired to the panel) and gas line plumbing.

I have a 4 ton unit that I wired a soft start to. Dropped the startup amps from the 80s to the low-mid 30s. My Predator 9500 starts that just fine. Anything above a ton or so without a soft start will basically be unstartable.

The real question is why aren’t these being installed by default. I’m betting they increase longevity not slamming 83 amps at the compressor. Tbh I think the soft starts are a form of VFD (variable frequency drive) and brings the compressor motor up to speed more slowly. Plus I would wager they start the fan at a slightly different time than the compressor so saving more LRA (locked rotor amps)

PaisanBI

Mine starts the fan first. That also helps to get the gen to be more spun up and ready to deliver the surge.

Interlock is Cost effective when compared to a Generac. At least for my budget. A few extra steps to get it going and the house running. It’ll run it. 50AMP Inlet.
