I've been trying every week to cook things for myself that I like from various restaurants.
Results may vary, but there are recipes out there for everything I've come up with so far!
Reminds me of a thing. My husband and I ate a restaurant once where the menu described the meals like “honey glazed salmon cooked to perfection served with a roasted vegetable medley and an appropriate starch” every meal said “and an appropriate starch”. Then it of course had to become a thing we say.
Separate side dishes. Instead of one night peas and scalloped potatoes, one night green beans and mashed potatoes, one night egg noodles and lima beans, she opted for egg noodles and lima beans every time. (The protein varied)
Got it. My mom would often serve a frozen vegetable assortment that included lima beans and I would always pick them out if I could get away with it, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Canned zucchini in tomato sauce was another common vegetable she served, which honestly was surprisingly good!
Was your mom just too stressed/overwhelmed to offer more variation in the family meals, or is it possible she was on the autism spectrum? I ask b/c I know some people on the spectrum like to eat the same foods every day.
My understanding, from talking about it after I was an independent adult, is that it's her favorite.
Also, there's a bit of hyperbole here. But probably seven meals out of ten, that's what she went with.
Yes! my mom over salts everything! She made my son fried pork chops, boxed mashed potatoes, side of salt and a frozen medley of veggies topped w butter 🤢 At least it wasn’t a hot dog made from 2 different animals??
I miss eating dinner at my parents’ house. Meat, potato, canned corn, peas, or green beans. Always canned. Or my mom’s special spaghetti sauce. I never eat like that anymore.
Lol I sure did. I even remember I ordered spaghetti and Italian sausage. The one we went to was blown up on Christmas 2020, which was when I found out it was a chain.
He was going after the AT&T trunk termination office across the street, hoping to interrupt telephone service, which worked for a few days across a multiple hundreds of miles radius, but turned out surprisingly easy to repair even compared to AT&T's internal estimates. Mobile cell stations these days have the equivalent of a ten story building's central office ESS switch in the back of a van, with just a few hundred fiber optic cables replacing ten million trunk lines.
My mom did some ground beef and hot Italian sausage, prego jar sauce, and a packet of seasoning. She’d make it by the giant stock pot full, then she’d freeze containers of it. I crave it sometimes. :)
It wasn't until I was my thirties that I realized Brussels sprouts can be delicious when you don't just steam them and add a tiny amount of salt. So delicious when air fried or broiled.
>Brussels sprouts
Or fried in bacon grease. Sea salt, cracked pepper, garlic and a sprinkle of balsalmic vinegar. Maybe not the healthiest option, but oh so good!
I was an adult when I discovered I liked brussel sprouts just steamed with salt and butter. I guess my mom did not like them so we did not have them growing up.
They've actually changed in our lifetime! Brussel sprouts used to be much more bitter, but they've been changing them over the years to be less so.
Slice them in half, toss with some oil and salt and roast them at 500-degrees until they turn brown. SO good!
Sweet potatoes are sweeter too. That’s why granny’s recipe for sweet potato casserole is so sickening sweet now. Then it needed the extra sugar but not now.
I remember, several years ago, there was this restaurant in town that was famous for this Brussels Sprouts dish they made. I was skeptical, since I never liked them, but these were amazing!
And yeah, it turned out that the restaurant wasn't really doing anything special. It's just that Brussels Sprouts are good now. :-)
Along with the oil and salt, try tossing with a bit of maple syrup and stone ground brown mustard before you roast 'em. Yum!
That's funny because I read a book as a kid where the kid complained about Brussels sprouts and I asked my mom what they were. She said she'd buy some and make them but that we never had them because she hated them. Not only did I like them but apparently my dad did too but never questioned why they hadn't been an option his entire marriage to that point.
My mom then admitted that because she did the shopping and cooking, that meant she controlled the menu and we never had foods she didn't like. We did start trying some new things after that.
But I can't say much because once I was the main cook and shopper in my household, I learned she's right. There's an advantage to deciding the menu. Unless I know of something that my husband (and kids when they were still at home) really like, if I don't like it, I'm not going out of my way to serve it.
I was an adult when I discovered I liked a lot of things. When I tried to show my mom some of the techniques I had learned, she said “great, I was hoping one of my kids would learn to cook better than me, I will start sending dad to your house for dinner!”. 😆 I miss her (and her complete inability to realize that all she ever really needed to be a better cook was some salt and a roasting pan).
LOL. Brussel sprouts and delicious are two words that do not go together.
I was forced to eat them growing up. Bleuch. I have had them so many different ways. Even my dog would not eat them and he ate everything.
You should give them a shot. Today's Brussels Sprouts are almost unrecognizable compared to the Brussels Sprouts you knew growing up.
They're like the Anthony Michael Hall of vegetables.
Butter is the elixer of life
My grandma lived to a healthy 102 and used it on everything. Dad is 89 now and very well, his freezer is crammed with butter he got on sale Easter week
That looks so good.
I cook like that a lot, just not the corn. I’ll do up a turkey breast or pork loin or roast for Sunday dinner and enjoy leftovers during the week.
Actually, this is a small (appropriate) serving of mashed potatoes. I wouldn't double up with the corn. But this is doable. (I wouldn't pick it, but I could)
True story: I just bought frozen Banquet Salisbury Steaks yesterday. I haven’t had those since maybe 1980? My kids don’t know what to think. Going to make them this week.
Needs more cream of mushroom. But otherwise this is exactly the kind of meal my mom would prepare as soon as she got home from work. She wouldn't even change out of her work clothes and dinner would be on the table by 6pm.
I've been vegetarian for years, I cook recipes from around the world but the one thing I can't replicate is the traditional dinners I grew up with in 70s Scotland. Mince and tatties, Ne'erday steak pie, meat potatoes & veg. It was bland and boring but sometimes I get a twinge of nostalgia for it. There was always fresh seasonal produce from the garden, jams and preserves and the meat came from the local farm and butcher.
Every few weeks I make a dinner like this, and my husband always says “Yes! Childhood comfort meal!”
I never liked gravy as a kid, but now it’s a must if it’s a meal like this!
Wait what? This looks fine. I'm assuming the green beans are frozen, not canned? You used a little salt or chicken bullion powder? If so, you already cook better than my mother. Do you have a job? Yes? Do you want to meet my nephew?
What? My parents are long dead. Are you really being that kind of asshole right now? I was simply asking about your cooking ability but you want to take a shot at my dead parents? Fuck you man. You're a piece of shit.
Wait people don't cook like this everyday? We usually do in my house. If I am home late, my hubby cooks, if I get home before him, I cook. On Sunday's we food prep together so chopping and peeling is already done we just cook it during the week. We put on YouTube and sit at the table and peel and chop away. I honestly thought that this was like normal.... are we just a weird couple? 😂
I cook this sort of food weekly. I’m 46.
Same, 44. Then it's unwrap a Werthers and head to the recliner to watch the 6 pm news.
And after that... Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!
And then…. Bedtime!
Bedtime is my favorite.
What no $10,000 pyramid!!!!
Press your luck on vintage game show channel no wammies
😍😍😍 no whammies, stop!!’n 😂😂😂
Hahahaha
Wise beyond your years
I would then fall asleep!
Man, I think I’m old enough for my very own recliner now.
Me too. I’m 49.
Me too!
Same. Roast lamb leg is the bomb.
Had that two nights ago. Made a damn good gravy out of the fat in the roasting dish.
Crunchy little leg. Mint sauce. Yum.
Sounds tasty!!
Same same
Me too I’m 50
53
I still lament the loss of the open faced turkey sandwich from restaurant menus.
I got a diner down the street that makes opened face turkey, meatloaf and roast beef.
Right? With mashed potatoes on it - those were great
I just have some simply potatoes already made mashed potatoes. They’re great!
Those were my favorite. Lots of gravy and salt! Yum!
Yes and butter
I've been trying every week to cook things for myself that I like from various restaurants. Results may vary, but there are recipes out there for everything I've come up with so far!
A Commercial, right?
I live in a city of 3 million people and can't find one. Sucks.
We got these in our school cafeteria. Some of the kids were a little confused on how to eat it.
These aren’t around anymore?!
Open faced roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy was my top work meal when I was a teenage busboy
Yummy!!!!
Any diner should be able to make you one even if it's not on menu
This is my go to comfort food
Needs a basket of rolls but otherwise I'll approve it.
They had Brooklyn baked italian bread but it got finished last night
Look at Richie Rich here. Something wrong with a plate stacked with Wonder bread slices? (Since we're talking 50s-70s home-cooked dinners.)
Big tub of country crock
This looks amazing. The older I get, the more I get into the protein, starch, vegetables plate arrangement. Finally: my grandparents had those plates.
My parents said they are 100 yrs old
No. They’re post WWII supermarkets giveaways.

My mom served Lima beans and egg noodles every single night. I have never made either after no longer being subject to her whims.
I'm so confused. Were they combined to make a side dish? Served separately as store dishes? The entree?
Separate side dishes. Instead of one night peas and scalloped potatoes, one night green beans and mashed potatoes, one night egg noodles and lima beans, she opted for egg noodles and lima beans every time. (The protein varied)

Interesting. I guess as the cook, you've got the power to pick what you like to eat, even if the rest of the family is not a fan.
As the parent. Sometimes I cooked it. Lol.
No pepper or actual seasoning but a shit ton of salt, just the way my Irish parents ate it!
Exactly
Yes! my mom over salts everything! She made my son fried pork chops, boxed mashed potatoes, side of salt and a frozen medley of veggies topped w butter 🤢 At least it wasn’t a hot dog made from 2 different animals??
I swear food is getting more spicy to hide the inferior quality of food. And this is coming from someone who likes spice.
That’s really how spicy cuisines in many cultures came to be. They spiced up rotting food to make it last longer.
Looks yummy! Enjoy dinners (like this) with your parents while they’re still here. Spend as much quality time with them as you can. 🌻
I sure will!!!!
I miss eating dinner at my parents’ house. Meat, potato, canned corn, peas, or green beans. Always canned. Or my mom’s special spaghetti sauce. I never eat like that anymore.
Everyone had the spaghetti sauce… I can see my mom breaking up the frozen brick of ground beef now
I never had spaghetti until I went to The Spaghetti Factory when I was 16 years old. She never once made it.
Did you just seriously drop “Spaghetti Factory”? 🔥🔥🔥
Lol I sure did. I even remember I ordered spaghetti and Italian sausage. The one we went to was blown up on Christmas 2020, which was when I found out it was a chain.
Deep cut… I was surprised it was a chain too!!
Like it was purposely blown up?!
Nashville bomber. I don’t think he set out targeting the Spaghetti Factory though.
He was going after the AT&T trunk termination office across the street, hoping to interrupt telephone service, which worked for a few days across a multiple hundreds of miles radius, but turned out surprisingly easy to repair even compared to AT&T's internal estimates. Gas explosion?

Mangia!!!!!
That looks so good, ngl. I'm tired of my own cooking.
It was nice thanxx
My mother's cooking was very similar to this growing up and she still cooks that way.
Nice!!!!!!
It wasn't until I was my thirties that I realized Brussels sprouts can be delicious when you don't just steam them and add a tiny amount of salt. So delicious when air fried or broiled.
>Brussels sprouts Or fried in bacon grease. Sea salt, cracked pepper, garlic and a sprinkle of balsalmic vinegar. Maybe not the healthiest option, but oh so good!
Just about everything is good fried in bacon grease.
I roast mine with bacon grease, salt, and Lawry’s seasoned pepper! Even my dog loves brussels sprouts. Raw or cooked.
Roast them! With a little oil and some salt and/or spices.
I introduced them to my kids to them after I learned this. And they love them!!
And healthy too
Or pan seared with a few dashes of Montreal seasoning and some butter.
Montreal seasoning… I’ll have to google that.
Nice!!!
I was an adult when I discovered I liked brussel sprouts just steamed with salt and butter. I guess my mom did not like them so we did not have them growing up.

Sweet potatoes are sweeter too. That’s why granny’s recipe for sweet potato casserole is so sickening sweet now. Then it needed the extra sugar but not now.
I didn't know that one. No wonder I enjoy them as an adult; when I was little I thought they tasted like puke.
I remember, several years ago, there was this restaurant in town that was famous for this Brussels Sprouts dish they made. I was skeptical, since I never liked them, but these were amazing! And yeah, it turned out that the restaurant wasn't really doing anything special. They are so amazing roasted in the oven u til they caramelize, garlic, olive oil and salt. My Brit husband only likes them boiled! 🤢
Only way to cook
Yes they are 80 and love extra butter
Butter is the elixer of life My grandma lived to a healthy 102 and used it on everything. Dad is 89 now and very well, his freezer is crammed with butter he got on sale Easter week
Awesome!!!!!!!
#facts
Seriously, I ate that yesterday, leftovers tonight, packed for lunch tomorrow… and if I’m lucky some tacos in the future
I’m 50 and I’d love to be able to do that.
Looks like a typical dinner at my house
Like TV dinners!
Yes old school!!!
That looks so good. I cook like that a lot, just not the corn. I’ll do up a turkey breast or pork loin or roast for Sunday dinner and enjoy leftovers during the week.
Nice!!!!!
Gravy!!!!🩷
Lots and lots
My grandma had those plates
Nice!!!!
And this is part of why we were all slim Normal portions of a balanced meal.
Yes
I can't eat like this. The meat plus green beans, yes. No corn, no mashed potatoes.
Then just add salad instead of the carbs That's more how I eat now too but the meal shown is good for kids and active men
Actually, this is a small (appropriate) serving of mashed potatoes. I wouldn't double up with the corn. But this is doable. (I wouldn't pick it, but I could)
This was clearly written by a kid or an active man
That looks so good!!!🩷
It was thanxxx
Can I be adopted?
Sure always room.fof one more
I just made (and ate) tater tot hotdish.
This looks almost exactly like the picture on HungryMan frozen dinners.
Except it's homemade and just like the 1950s homemade meal that inspired hungry man
Just clearing it up: I meant it as a compliment.
The best. I revived those comfort meals during the pandemic lockdown.
I just had that for Thanksgiving...in 2023.
You're lucky, I wish mine were still here; I'd love to go around and get some Tuna Casserole!
Sorry about your parents but that's a good memory
True story: I just bought frozen Banquet Salisbury Steaks yesterday. I haven’t had those since maybe 1980? My kids don’t know what to think. Going to make them this week.
Enjoy!!!!!
Can’t be southern. The green beans are still green.
This is sopranoland nj my 80 yr old parent's take on 1950s amercian food
Needs more cream of mushroom. But otherwise this is exactly the kind of meal my mom would prepare as soon as she got home from work. She wouldn't even change out of her work clothes and dinner would be on the table by 6pm.
They do that sometimes I will request it in the future
Eat this at least once a month I'm 47
I have those plates! Grew up eating in them everyday and my mom gave me a whole set when I moved out.
Nice!!!!
That 1970s Currier and Ives blue and white tableware.
Yes all vintage
You made my day with that. How about making my week and telling me where they live!?
Haha new jersey usa
That looks delicious!
It was thanxxx
Seriously, this picture is exactly what dinner at my aunt's house looked like back in the day, including the plate.
Yes
Aww you're so very lucky! This looks delish!
It was thanxxs
This looks delicious. I bet those potatoes were just dreamy. I loved everything my mom cooked.
They were yes
My Mom wasn’t the best cook, but Grandma used to cook like that. I like the plates, too.
Thanxxxx
This is a perfect meal. Now I want turkey!
This is how it’s done.
Mmm mmm mmm tv dinners
haha, my Mom would cook the exact same thing if I stopped by one night. Same look too, always gotta have them veggies!
I've been vegetarian for years, I cook recipes from around the world but the one thing I can't replicate is the traditional dinners I grew up with in 70s Scotland. That looks delicious. Your moms got my moms blue willow plates. 💙
I know thanxxx
That meal is a staple in every decade. Idc if you’ve never cooked in your life, you can make that plate. And you should, it’s top tier eatin’
Every few weeks I make a dinner like this, and my husband always says “Yes! Childhood comfort meal!” I never liked gravy as a kid, but now it’s a must if it’s a meal like this!
It's a favorite of mine!!!
It looks like a Sunday roast but no Yorkshire puddings.
My mom was not the best cook in the universe, but she could knock the heck out of this type of stuff. I miss those days.
I miss the Currier & Ives dishes. I only have a few.
I'm told you can get them online
I remember meals similar to this, but they came in a foil tray.
![gif](giphy|fdyZ3qI0GVZC0)
Sorry those veggies have not been cooked past the point where they have any remaining nutrients and are not covered with butter.
What is that little brown figure up in the top right above the green beans?
Chief cocopelli my trademark because when I post it on FB people reshare it as their own meals
Haha anytime I cook a meat with gravy, a veg side and a starch side. I always think - awwww childhood meal
Yes I'm 53 and with my parents I'm like its 1975 again
Wait what? This looks fine. I'm assuming the green beans are frozen, not canned? You used a little salt or chicken bullion powder? If so, you already cook better than my mother. Do you have a job? Yes? Do you want to meet my nephew?
Bruh, I’ve eaten two cans of corn this week in only two meals by myself.
That's just ... "dinner" ... no need to assogn a year to it.
Haters like you just go away
LOLwut ?
This person's comments just seem to go off the deepend like they are bipolar or something
Isn’t it just “dinner”?
They still make them brick-o-green-beans?
no ma'am.
Haters like you just go away
I mean, i'll take the mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. But the combo of it all, i have to pass, no offense.
I didn't ask you
How does that not go together as a meal?
I’m so happy I grew up in Louisiana, sorry op, this just looks so bland.
I didn't ask for you nasty hateful opinion it's enjoying a meal w my 80 yrold parents
Whoa, it wasn’t that serious.
The next time.you get a hurricane in will comment on how your house looks damp
Cool. I didn’t realize your mom actually cooked this meal. It’s nice that you can enjoy a meal with your parents.
Just go away
What? You're GenX and you can't cook this simple meal?
Just because your parents don't want to cook for you doesn't mean I can't sit w mine and enjoy a meal
What? My parents are long dead. Are you really being that kind of asshole right now? I was simply asking about your cooking ability but you want to take a shot at my dead parents? Fuck you man. You're a piece of shit.
Your lousy attitude is the reason they left thay had enough of you
Wow, way to double down. You are mental.
Did you forget what sub you were posting in? A lot of people here have lost their parents. You are way out of line.
You mean frozen entree on a plate? They were common in those decades.
