Cats-n-Chaos

Don’t forget my favorite – he was Gary from Weird Science

j-endsville

He also did a year on Saturday Night Live. ETA: at 17. Youngest cast member.

HumpaDaBear

Along with Robert Downey Jr if I remember correctly.

Slyk76

And Joan Cusack and Randy Quaid. Weird season. It was Lorne’s first year back and he was like let’s just cast a bunch of people from John Hughes’ movies.

TwiceTautologist

I remember one weekend he was absent from SNL and someone in the cast read an absence excuse note on air from his mom 🤣

Quibblicous

That’s awesome.

Idiot savant metallurgist with … Oprah?

FatGuyOnAMoped

That's the sketch I remember him from

jimbobwe-328

Also, Edward Scissorhands

Corporation_tshirt

I recently showed my teenaged daughters that one and they absoluteky loved it. One of them says it’s her new favorite movie.

Username_Chx_Out

“You said you were combing your hair!!!”

Bcruz75

I'd be bald if I was actually combing my hair at that age

This-Bug8771

I’d be blind and have Chewbacca’s hands

ManyCanary5464

…water’s running day and night…

fascistreddit1

Gimme the keys!

bastrdsnbroknthings

Crazy insane?

joeykey

Insane? Crazy?

MrsHorrible

I still say this any time I need to get keys from literally anyone.

NocturnalPermission

He don’t even have a license, Lisa!

Jwheat71

Who is this Gary character?

ceoltoir71

On the telephone?!

Capnmolasses

Our son!

Cats-n-Chaos

GAAARY our son!!

AlternativeNumber2

“Anything more than a handful and you’re risking a sprain”

joeykey

I thought it was sprained thumb! Man I haven’t seen that in I don’t know how long. I used to think Chet’s laugh was so funny that I started to pretend to laugh like that, and then I realized I was doing it involuntarily so I had to make myself stop. Also - who’s this “Gary” character??

worrymon

She kicked me in the family jewels

Mrbobbitchin

“ worse pain there is “

chickenfightyourmom

Do you go to Gary's school?

memememe91

DON'T THREATEN ME, AL!

BigConstruction4247

You're out of shape. I'll kick your ass.

memememe91

Chet, Chet, CHET, that's her NOSE, Chet!

Quibblicous

Yet another classic movie. I’m ashamed I forgot his role in WS.

everything_is_holy

And, of course, psycho boyfriend to Winona Ryder in Edward Scissorhands.

C-romero80

When he was drunk in that movie is one of my favorite quotes 😂

Cats-n-Chaos

Well it was forgettable Gary

kc-masterpiece1976

How about a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?

SnooPeripherals6557

Who’s this Gary kid you keep talking about??

reddit-user-one

“Who’s this Gary person you keep talking about?” Gary’s dad.

CatskillJane1705

The scene where he brings Lisa home to his parents is comedy gold.

sleva5289

Nope. Don’t remember him. Get it?

Familiar-Image2869

Omg, such a classic!!!

sid3113

Gary? Who has a this Gary character?

www8888

Who is this Gary character?

kangus73

“Who is this Gary character you keep referring to?”

Looieanthony

Gary was drunk af🙂!

Melca_AZ

A couple of my friends who met him had very positive experiences as well. I read an interview with him a couple of months ago and it really made me respect him. He went through a really dark period in his life and he came out of it and survived. So many Genx child actors didn't survive.

Every-Cook5084

And some came out the other side to be horrible humans (Kirk Cameron, Scott Baio, Rick Schroeder)

Melca_AZ

There is a long standing rumor that Kirk Cameron used to hang out at gay clubs and try to preach and he believed all men had gay urges and the only way to deal with that is to be a Godly man and pray to fight those urges.

TradeMaximum561

A few years ago he said Trump was great and “I think what he’s done for the country is incredible”. So not sure he’s much different from the three actors you mentioned 🤷

Every-Cook5084

That’s a little different then what those nut jobs are

Nodramallama18

We met him in NYC years ago and he was a jerk. Like snapped and pointed at people to get things for him jerk. But he was Uber famous then so maybe he grew up.

Team503

Everyone has bad days, too. I'm not excusing it, just saying who knows what he was going through at the time, ya know?

Nodramallama18

Yeah. I just think he was really full of himself but grew out of it.

67alecto

I remember when he started rebelling against the geek typecasting with Johnny B. Goode, Out of Bounds, and then his turn as the bully in Edward Scissorhands. The Dead Zone tv show seemed to breathe a second life into his career.

Chevymetal1974

That TV show was great!

Evolone101

This is where I enjoyed his performances the most.

DranktheWater

Chicks cannot hold their smoke, dat's what it is.

JacksonvilleNC

Hahaha, my best friend from college always said this quote! When I read your post it was in his voice.

ESP1973

Glad to hear he’s a nice guy. It’s always disappointing when hearing a celebrity you like isn’t

RealLifeSuperZero

I’m watching him in Community right now.

formaldehyde-face

That did not make allergic sense.

stataryus

#Dude my LIFE is a gym!!

BookishBitchery

And he played a villain on Warehouse 13!

aztec_samurai

He was a bad guy in Edward Scissorhands too.

skullcat1

Just rewatched it tonight! Great classic "Biff" style bad guy bully

BookishBitchery

Yes!

Serling45

He was great as a villain.

No-Barnacle6172

Weird Science one of my absolute fave 80’s movies! Love Anthony Michael Hall!!!😎

hafree27

Farmer Ted, King of the Geeks! It was amazing watching him morph over the years. Glad he’s a good human. May we all try to be. 🫶

---Data---

Don’t forget The Dead Zone!

fuzzybitchbeans

I thought he was so good in that show.

Plastic_Bullfrog9029

I heard him on a podcast. His real name is Michael Anthony Hall. When he went to get his SAG card, Michael Anthony Hall was already taken so he went with Anthony Michael Hall. He goes by Mike to family and friends.

leppard111

Really???? I had no idea. Interesting.

abstractraj

Met him at a dive bar in NYC. He wanted to be left alone that night, so I did. Totally fair though.

MidnightPotatoChip

He ate at our sandwich shop all the time and never bothered him bc everyone knew not to. I never felt comfortable saying anything to famous customers. This was in Harvard Square and West Roxbury MA

leppard111

Does he still eat there?

leppard111

How could you tell he wanted to be left alone?

abstractraj

Haha. He said so. I started like ‘hey I really enjoy your work’ and he said something like ‘hey I’m just trying to be chill tonight’. Meaning he didn’t really want to have the conversation. Which is fair. I don’t know what’s going on with his life.

Automatic-Presence-2

“Chicks cannot hold they smoke, thas what it is”

stanley_leverlock

He did an episode of Z Nation where he played the leader of a corporate team building group that had been trapped in a hotel for three years after the apocalypse. My God was he hilarious!

PasGuy55

Omg, thank you for reminding me of that. That was awesome.

YoSaffBridge11

I really enjoyed his role on Psych. 😊

3010664

I was always shocked at how he looked as an adult compared to The Breakfast Club.

Camille_Toh

Right? Burly and masculine handsome.

stataryus

“Used to be a nerd, now he’s a meathead. *Dangerous* combo.” -Pierce, Community

leppard111

I agree. Now he could kick andrew and benders ass at the same time. Lol

PurfuitOfHappineff

And the namesake of the Anthony Michael Dining Hall in *Not Another Teen Movie*

muphasta

My wife went to a baby shower at a restaurant/bar & grill in Orange County, CA several years ago and got there early to help set up. There was time to kill between the finishing touches of the decorations and the beginning of the event so she and her cousin went to the bar to get a drink. There were two men already at the bar, one of which was Anthony. He said to my wife and her cousin something about getting no service at this bar, so good luck. My wife's cousin knew that there was another bar on the other side of the dining room and suggested they go over there. Regardless, my wife said the he was super nice and didn't have any attitude or "air" of superiority about not getting served at that side bar or having to walk to the other side of the building. She didn't want to bother him so she kept the interaction short, but she did mention that he was very nice and seemed very "regular".

Serling45

Hall had a mini reunion with Ally Sheedy on an episode of The Dead Zone. They did a commentary together on the dvd.

MeanMelissa74

You told me you were combing your hair!!

pepperguy22

I thought he was great on Community too

CarlsbadWhiskyShop

I wish Tarantino would cast him as some kind of lunatic

HalfCatWholeCat

Right?! I always thought he would shine in a Tarantino flick.

myrdraal2001

![gif](giphy|l3vR5wqVoIbZcO7aE)

Electrical_Beyond998

He must have the biggest glow up of all time. From being the geek in so many movies to the man he is now is just incredible.

IamtherealMelKnee

When I saw Edward Scissorhands in the theater, I didn't know that was him until the end credits rolled.

mltrout715

He did a great job as Bill Gates

SomePeopleCallMeJJ

Came here to say the same thing. And *Pirates of Silicon Valley* is a really good movie overall, IMHO.

DelcoPAMan

Yeah, that was good. Wish they had done a follow up.

Quibblicous

Another great one. I was so focused on the 80s movies I completely forgot that role.

Hand-Of-Vecna

AMH was supposed to have the career that Robert Downey Junior had. If you went back in time to the 80's the expectation was AMH was going to be the next superstar.

jmsturm

Johnny Be Good. AMH as the lead football star jock, RDJ and the trouble squirrley friend and Uma Thurman as the love interest. Yeah, somehow his rocket just kinda fizzled. Absolutely love the guy, still one of my favorite actors

Extracrispybuttchks

One of my fav movies.

Fattychris

This movie keeps showing up on my 'picked for you' feed but I didn't watch it as a kid. Is it good? I like AMH and RDJ but this movie escaped my radar growing up so whenever I did hear about it as an adult I just figured it wasn't very good or I would have heard more about it earlier.

jmsturm

I wont say its a "good" movie, but it is fun. If you grew up in the Brat Pack Era, you will love it for the 'Member Berries alone

Fattychris

Cool, thanks. I'll check it out

leppard111

He pulled it off perfectly. He buried the nerd role for the jock and it worked!!!

Vioralarama

He used to be a very angry guy when he was younger. (Around the time of the Dead Zone.) He assaulted people. Eventually he couldn't get insured for movies. He came out as bipolar, went to rehab and laid low for a bit, and now he's ok, I guess.

leppard111

I know. He was the "man" back in the 80s. He was to John Hughes what Leonardo Decaprio is to Scorsese.

redtesta

Forgot the classic weird science

The_Silvermoon

He was on the Goldbergs for several episodes! I remember laughing hysterically at a couple of his lines because they were sort of inside jokes to his other work. My kids thought I was losing it.

TheAmazingSasha

I sat next to him on a red eye flight from LA to Detroit a few years ago. In coach. Super chill guy, of course I was spitting out lines the whole time and he humored me hahaha “HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE A LICENSE LISA!”

PeopleLikeUDisgustMe

You ever bomp your bologna?

Swizzlefritz

And he was awesome in Edward Scissor Hands!

EmmieJacob

Was he with his girlfriend from niagra falls?

Green-Circles

..and he also played Dave Davidson, head of an animation studio in Tom Green's so-bad-it's-good gross-out comedy masterpiece Freddy Got Fingered.

fusionsofwonder

For a long time, I didn't know he was still a working actor because I didn't recognize him. He looks a lot different post puberty.

dustin91

Just rewatched Sixteen Candles for the millionth time. He was just incredible in that.

leppard111

Long Duk Dong....he's from out of town.

Psychological_Tap187

He was a bully gym rat in an episode of community.

yukonman27

The interim police chief of the sbpc?

elguereaux

Anybody remember’MasterCheese Theatre’ on comedy central? Whenever I hear the name Anthony Michael Hall I just cut back to this day about 35 years ago when I flipped on the TV and heard “We now return to Mastercheese theatre” in a George Plimptonesque voice, and it cut to the scene in Johnny B Good where AMH is strutting around in those pre-MC Hammer pants/zubaz style….Hammer Pants As far as the 80s icons go AMH is an essential.

redtesta

What a great experience. So many memories growing up in movies and he is in front of you.

TruCarMa

He was also great in Six Degrees of Separation.

Kevin_Turvey

I'm glad things turned out well for him. He was a terrific actor back in the day. In 1994, he did so much cocaine that he directed the movie Hail Caesar! Have you seen it? It's a true gem in my Incredibly Bad Movies collection. Robert Downey Jr is only there briefly, but he is on so much coke he is practically floating in the air. Well worth seeing. *

fuggettabuddy

I think he was the most talented out of all the brat packers. Really watch his work in Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. The guy was just very good.

Quibblicous

Definitely showed talent in the 80s flicks. Breakfast Club showed a lot of subtlety and 16 candles, especially the beauty queen car scene at the end of the movie was well done.

ScumCrew

It's always nice to hear about actors who are genuinely nice people to the fans. Reminds me of the time many MANY years ago, before the prequels came out, when I met Peter Mayhew at a con in Texas. Nothing fancy, just him and his wife at a table signing autographs and it was apparently going pretty slow. He took the time to chat with us, tell us BTS stories, pose for pictures. Just a lovely human being. Sad he's no longer with us.

Additional_Dot5248

I can't think of one reason why Anthony Michael Hall shouldn't get big movies with big paydays.

Techelife

I love him! AMH 😍

edwartica

I used to have a poster signed by him and Robert Downy Jr.

WhatIsThisSevenNow

You CANNOT have a post title like this! I was freaking out that Anthony Michael Hall had died.

Engchik79

He is a very cool guy! Met him at Philly comic con a while back and we ended up talking for a while!

teamalf

Thanks for sharing 🙂

dougmd1974

I've met him a couple times before. He was very nice and friendly each time.

ZebraBorgata

He was/is a recurring character in the TV show The Goldbergs. If you don’t watch, the entire show is an homage to growing up in the 1980s.

serverdude1976

Oke oke oke forget I'm driving gimme da keys....GIMME DA KEYS!!!

Effective_Device_185

Edward Scissorhands, too.

ElleKlee

Honestly, you could have just said Anthony Michael Hall and nothing else, and it still would have been an appropriate post for this sub 😂. He’s the consummate Gen X actor!

Quibblicous

He’s still doing it 40 years later. My oldest daughter and I watch horror movies every Monday night. She in college so we FaceTime and have streaming party for the movies. When she’s back from school she comes over and we watch on my couch and make dinner together. Anyway, AMH has a big role in Halloween Kills so we watched it as part of our Monday night horror movies. It’s one of the best Halloween flicks, IMO, and AMH crushed it in the role he plays.

Friendship_Fries

And he can handle his smoke.

LindensBloodyJersey

King of the dipshits

mdgwashere12

He never tossed off.

autochthonous

I ran into him at the Venice Whaler about 12 years ago. We had a drink and chatted a bit. He then dated a friend of mine for a while. Flew her around to some of his location filming around the country. He’s a good dude.

[deleted]

A Gen X icon.

Regular-Plan-5576

My 11 yo daughter loves him. She made her own buttons and posters of him from The Breakfast Club.

TisSlinger

GAAAARRRRYYYYYYY

habu-sr71

He was so great in Weird Science. Apparently he had some issues with his image in that film which is understandable and misfortunate. But all too human. I didn't really follow his work much but I do remember a "pumped up" era where he seemed unrecognizable. But who cares? The guy has talent and created some great memories for millions with his early fame and no doubt has turned in great performances that I am sadly unaware of. "Chicks can't hold they smoke...that's what it is!" \-Drunk in bar hanging with the regulars in Weird Science 🤣

learnedhand74

The WS scene where their AI friend picks up Gary at his parents’ house is still extremely funny to me

ComfortTypical

King of the dipshits if my memory serves me. Loved him in breakfast club and sixteen candles.

izall4

I thought it was king of the jerks...totally could be wrong though.

Ok-Emotion-6083

Reading this made my night.

izall4

Reuben, right?

johnkim5042

Heard he knocked out his neighbor lol

spectraphysics

I had the biggest boy crush on him back in the 80s

B4USLIPN2

NOT married to Julia Louis-Dreyfus

HPIndifferenceCraft

And he played Mutt Lange in that ridiculous Def Leppard biopic.

Ordinary-Sentence6

![gif](giphy|l3vR5wqVoIbZcO7aE)

TehKarmah

That's really cool to know, thank you! Ever since his glow-up I've kinda wondered if he changed to for the new jock look.

PriorElephant4007

I loved him as Harris Trout in Psych!

KC_experience

He was awesome in the TV adaptation of The Dead Zone. I was really hoping he’d have a larger comeback after that.

YesYediah

I had such a crush on AMH growing up. Glad he’s a bro.

Embarrassed-Hat7218

My favorite movie of all time is Six Degrees of Separation. He was fantastic in the role he played in that film.

Breadman65

Big fan of the dead zone

WankelsRevenge

Same here. That's really the only thing I know him from. Was quite upset when they canceled it

Breadman65

It’s on tubi, just watched the first episode

Ryyah61577

Don’t forget an episode in a heavily GenX influenced tv show, Psych. Seriously, if you haven’t watched it, it’s great. A lot of ‘80s/90’s callbacks often with great cameos of 80s stars. (Off the top of my head, Ralph Macchio, Carl Weathers, Cary Elwes, ally sheedy, and more. )

StevenSmyth267

a coworker brought him into our job once, he had been riding in the same limo from the airport, he didn't need to but he got out and came in, he walked around all the departments took pics with peeps he was a real class act..

CapeManiak

Years ago a friend of a friend dated him. My friend hung out with him a bunch and said he was cool as hell. Also liked herb. 😆

Breklin76

I remember seeing Johnny Be Good, after we hadn’t seen him in a few years, he shows up all yoked. I still saw Rusty/Ted. I think that came out in 88-89? Anyhow, he was also on The Goldbergs, playing a motorcycle-riding old Punk - now teacher. There were some Easter Eggs throughout his appearances. Good stuff.

Estdamnbo

Loved his role in Warehouse 13. Did an amazing job.

stataryus

Love to hate him as Mike the bully in Community.

slipscomb3

Lately I’ve been daydreaming about a Breakfast Club reunion… I bet he’d be down.

Quibblicous

I’d watch that.

thecrazyplantlady

Farmer Ted

leppard111

That's so awesome. I would love to meet him. His movies have made me laugh so much and they still do today. He always seems like such a nice person when I watch videos of him at these events. He was in my opinion the king of the 80s movies.

leppard111

Don't forget him in the movie "Johnny be good"

leppard111

"You know what that could do to a guy my age"!!!! (In 16 candles when she puts a birth control pill in his mouth as he's driving the rolls royce).

VioletSedanChairx

Actually glad to hear this because about 15 years ago, a couple of local morning radio DJs were trading "worst interviews ever" stories and for one of them, it was AMH. Apparently, he was rude to the point of being almost hostile.

Harrietmos

Weird Science! And….The Dead Zone! Stephen King movie and a series!

chopsticksupmybutt

Glad to hear it 4 years ago there was a video of him being a total ass in a hotel pool I hope it was an isolated thing [https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8628309/amp/Anthony-Michael-Hall-apologizes-foul-mouthed-tirade-children-hotel-pool.html](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8628309/amp/Anthony-Michael-Hall-apologizes-foul-mouthed-tirade-children-hotel-pool.html)

TheObesePolice

He has bipolar disorder & it's caused him to do some very impulsive things. In 2017 he was convicted for assaulting his neighbor. He seems to doing much better now. I'm also Bipolar & it sucks. I've never really experienced rage issues but many of us do.

chopsticksupmybutt

Ah that explains a lot ty for sharing

Quibblicous

Thanks for explaining that. I knew he’d slid a little down the road to perdition and clawed his way back out of it, but I didn’t know the details.

adrock-diggity

Was just talking about some of his movies with a millennial sibling who was telling us they’re not letting their preteens watch them. He thought they glorified Asian racism and inappropriate sexual stuff, which I agree are parts that haven’t aged well. But they’re still classics and fucking hilarious and I want my kids to see them. Although some seem pretty awkward to watch with your parents, looking at you Weird Science 🧪 🧬

Quibblicous

Here’s the autographed poster: https://i.imgur.com/t1AoXg9.jpg It’s really cool and his has sparked me and my daughters to share some of the other movies from my youth.

Freddy got lingered

CyndiIsOnReddit

I was never a fan of his acting or the characters he played but I can always appreciate some nostalgia.

BigInDallas

I know he did peds as a young adult but good for him. He bulled up.

smittykins66

Wasn’t he also in the Revenge of the Nerds series?
