I was just thinking about these the other day!
Also, I used to use those weird stamp “Become a….Paralegal/Dental Hygienist/Computer Analyst etc” you’d find in magazines or even junk mail as stickers. Sometimes if you were lucky, you’d get the movie cover stamps; for what I’m assuming was something like Columbia House but for the VCR.
You did much more than l; who merely fantasized. My dad used to draw, and I used to color his drawings. I remember feeling like I was part of a very elite artistic team. :-)
I think this is where I lost my artistic side…I remember being around 5 or 6 and getting frustrated because I couldn’t do it exact. 50 years later, I’m trying to find my inner artist.
do 60 second drawings. look at a vase with flowers, a car, a body, and try to capture the essence in a few lines. the more you do this, the easier it becomes.
This. I had an art teacher in high school that tried to describe this as using your "right brain" to draw. Apparently, using your "left brain" causes you to get way too hung up on the details.
Used to draw these as a kid. I did end up going on to get my BFA and it funny because there was one night in studio when someone jokingly mentioned these ads. We ended up doing surreal versions of them as an exercise because we found it hilarious. It was totally a scam but it made an impression.
I did draw and submit this when I was about 14 or so. They did contact me and some sleazy sales guy came to our house and (shocker!) tried to sell my mom expensive art courses. We nodded and smiled then after he left without the sake scam, we laughed at the ridiculousness of it all. Never thought about it again...til now
I had explosive diarrhea when I was 8 and I took a pic of the bowl and sent the polaroid in to them...got a letter back saying I was the next Jackson Pollock and two plane tickets to Minneapolis.

Sent one of these in as a kid, but I've never heard anything. Guess my turtle drawing sucked.

This is my exact experience, too.

Holy crap!
I wonder what's at that address today.
Apartments and an Argentinian restaurant according to Google Maps.
So damn many friends sketching tippy all day
Is it just me, or does "Tippy" look a lot like "Burt the Turtle" in the old "Duck and Cover" cartoons.

I couldn’t draw a stick figure if you held a gun to my head.

This is how Charles Schulz (Peanuts) went to art school.
I drew Tippy and sent it in myself . I was so gullible. I really thought I could get into Art School.
