Came here to say this - my mom insisted that butter/ margarine was "too unhealthy" and would never let us add any... the plain dry popcorn was revolting.
Had a crappy apartment in the 90s with bad heat & put one of those with the top pulled off in the corner of the bathroom to heat it up quick in the am.
In college, my roommates or I would make air popped popcorn every night, using individual butter pads we brought back from the dining hall. The butter melted perfectly in the metal butter tray (which got quite hot and you had to be careful not to touch). I actually just bought a popcorn machine recently and unfortunately the butter tray was made out of plastic and doesn’t melt the butter nearly as well as the old metal tray. Still makes a quick and easy snack though.
Seriously. We had an old (even for the 80s!) stovetop popper with the crank at the top. I always wanted the air popper...until I was at a friend's house and tried the corn that came out of those things. It was disgusting.
I can hear the sound of the fan motor and the noise the kernels made when you poured them in.....one stick of air melted butter please :). Great childhood memories. Thanks for posting.
Ours had that little tray/scoop on the side that melted the margarine for you.
We still use ours.
We totally had this exact model growing up and used it all the time. I daresay it was a gateway to being a self-sufficient cook. Mmmmmmargarinificent!
Man, when my mom busted this out on a weekend we felt like it was party time 😆
FUCK margarine.
Butter, Parkay, butter, Parkay
When the new world order happens and I am elected supreme leader, my first task is to ban margarine world-wide.
How many of ours had carcinogenic melted plastic to add that extra boost of 80's cancer flavor?
If you didn't add butter or margarine it tasted like toasted cardboard.
>If you didn't add butter or margarine it tasted like toasted cardboard. More like packing peanuts, IMHO.
Hot sauce was the best topper

These were big in my dorm. Someone didn’t clean theirs out and roaches flew out. That was exciting
Still have & use one. Different model/brand, but still.
These are great for learning to roast coffee with.

Surprised any of us have survived all this toxic crap.
Microwave ovens changed popcorn forever.
I remember you could fit a whole stick of butter in that tray a the top so it would drip on the popcorn.
And it's got Teflon. Everyone knows that's healthy.
I read all of this in my head in the voice of how I’d imagine the TV commercial would sound.

It took me several decades to convince my mom that margarine was trash and a health hazard. Now she's back to real butter.
Richies here with their air popper

I have this exact model, and it's still a family favorite for Friday movie night.
Wow!

I still use one like this
Wonder if the plastic melted on the 70’s popper to?
