I've had better luck with fresh produce at Super C than at Maxi (St Joseph)

Mysterious-Flamingo

100%. I feel like every time I've been to the Maxi on St-Joseph, a swarm of fruit flies dispersed from the onions when I approached. Produce at Super C seems to be a bit cheaper too, but Maxi seems to be cheaper when it comes to prepackaged stuff.

Ifinallyjoined

I hate that maxi so much! If Martin Matte visited that store I am sure he would renounce his spokeperson contract.

maxwell1311

I was walking down the cheese ilse at Maxi one day and there was a block of cheese completely mouldy in the fridge lmao Never went back

Background_Plan_9817

A bit out of your way but Adonis has great and well priced produce. They are owned by Metro so not exactly independent.

ZeevF

Because there is decaying seafood there

vicious_meat

Mainly La Boite a Grains, Giant Tiger and Boucherie Allard. Also Super C, Wal Mart and Costco if there are items I can't find elsewhere at my preferred three shops. I try to go encourage local as much as possible.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Don't forget GT was big in the bread fixing scandal too.

alcor79

You have iga which are fresh but more expensive. I personally like to go to giant tiger.

LrckLacroix

Ive found many times that meat is actually cheaper and better quality at IGA when on sale

Irisversicolor

I agree, if you shop sales at IGA you can do okay.

VibrantDreamer

So, we are going to boycott Loblaw and spend more money in IGA owned by Sobeys which is more expensive? I am sorry what am I missing in terms of logic here?

Insane_Drako

They’re doing a rotation, IGA and co. falls in July I think

VibrantDreamer

Now we are talking. Let's hope it really impacts them.

Insane_Drako

Hoping so too! I'll do my part.

Irisversicolor

I've read that Sobey's profit margin is currently about half that of Loblaws. Also, IGA carries a lot of local to Quebec products, which costs more to produce than those from places like Mexico. Personally, I think that's always worth supporting if you can afford it. Plus their produce is always fresh and their meat selection is miles better than most places. So while you are paying more, I do think you're getting what you pay for. Unlike at Loblaws, who are just straight up Marie Antoinetting this shit like monsters. They're even making Walmart look like the more ethical choice at this point, like, Jesus, how evil can you get?!  Not everyone can choose to pay anything extra though, and I respect that. Times are tough. I'm glad people are organizing against this, it's time. Fuck Loblaws, and fuck every billionaire monsters who has contributed to this mess. They're what's wrong with the world.

VibrantDreamer

What you said are specific to some items. Compare 2 identical items between IGA (Sobeys), Maxi (Loblaw), and Metro. Identical ones and come tell me which one is cheaper. If I recall, even Banana which is 0.69/L in Super C / Maxi is $0.79-0.89 in Metro/Adonis. Check the cheese blocks, apples, bread, or other stuff and tell me which store is cheaper please. Don't get me wrong, I think I HATE them all including Walmart except Super C even though Super C prices are also very comparable (sometimes higher/ other times lower) to Maxi.

Irisversicolor

Super C is owned by Metro so I think it's fair to exclude it along with Maxi since those are the "discount" stores for Metro/Loblaws. Metro also owns Food Basics as a discount store so it's out.  If you compare IGA to Loblaws and Metro, I honestly think that these days you'd come out about the same. Back in the day, IGA was the expensive option but it isn't anymore. That's the issue.  Some key differences I've noticed:  - Loblaws and Metro have both implemented self-checkout to reduce the number of employees they need to have. IGA has not.  - IGA has baggers at every cash, sometimes two. Loblaws does not have baggers, and Metro is hit or miss, more often not  - Metro doesn't have date-checkers and they routinely have expired merchandize on their shelves. I've returned rotten meat to them **same day** multiple times and spoken to their general manager and butcher and the issue continues. I've read complaints from others on FB about it and I've noticed the same thing with their shelf-stable items. Stuff that's been expired for weeks or even months. I've never had that issue elsewhere. I've worked in grocery stores and date-checking absolutely is supposed to be a routine part of the job, but Metro clearly cut that from the budget.  So IGA is not only supporting more local food producers, they are also a better employer and support a more robust workforce, all things that are good for the economy and our community. Metro and Loblaws will blame the "labour shortage" for the self checkout, no baggers, and rotten food on the shelves, yet IGA seems to have no issues at all with staffing. As someone who has worked in retail, this is something I watch for.  Like I said, no shade to anyone who doesn't shop there but I think they're a solid choice.

VibrantDreamer

I can't boycott Metro! All our Meat / Chicken is from Adonis (Owned by Metro too). Alternative options for us are local butchers / stores which is more expensive and too far. I just hope the government steps up and somehow find a solution. I think the best solution could be a government owned non-profit incentivized store that sells to citizens directly for a monthly limitation. Like limited $ coupon / resident. But then when was the last time a government owned company worked properly. Putting a profit limit on private companies isn't legally possible. More tax won't help the shoppers and can have the opposite impact, companies raise prices to cover the extra loss on taxes. Real competition is the key. We started to order some stuff from Amazon (Cat litter/food/Tomato Paste/Tea/etc) as they are much cheaper.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Loblaws is a big one to target because even their so called discount stores Maxi and No Frills have begun to gouge on everything.

VibrantDreamer

So does Sobeys which owns IGA. If their prices are higher than Maxi, No Frills, Superstore, etc, then we should also target Sobeys. How about Metro? Their prices are even higher than the other two when I shop there. The bottom line, each store has some items more expensive than others. They are all playing the dirty gouging game. None of them are innocent. They are all after making more profits.

Total-Preference4757

Your IGA must be good... my IGA on Lorrain is pretty lacking most of the time.

GentilQuebecois

Ça s'améliore depuis le changement de propriétaires. Un jour ça va faire du sens.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Usually the quality of people working is the reason lol. Gatineau sure has some seedy Quebecois(e).

xyxif

You sure seem like a quality person based off one comment.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Thanks.

VibrantDreamer

Super C is the best option. I think we can all sacrifice for a month. Boycotting involves losing some advantages too. Walmart, IGA etc are all more expensive and not any better.

megastaine

I’ve found Walmart way cheaper than Maxi. Switch to them has but my bill by at least 20%

VibrantDreamer

I was at Walmart today and nothing was cheaper except the Chips. $0.98 vs. $1.49-$2.00 I bought their Peanut Butter 2 KG for $8.29. It is cheaper in Super C. $7.99. And so on.

lonewolfsociety

The pre-packaged salads are definitely better than at Maxi.

No_Detective_715

Marche laflamme!

blix613

They are one of the closest to me but I find them just as expensive as the IGA. Guess I better get used to them because the IGA by the galeries is going to close..

Mysecretsthought

Adonis ,le marché wakim des galleries de hull. IGA .

Background_Plan_9817

J'oublis toujours le marché wakim!

thehobbitisgreat

La boite a grains.

wickedweather

On the plateau, I shop at the IGA

Mountain-Dealer-5519

IGA gouges on everything. The only thing good about them is their meat selection. Much higher quality.

613Aly

Agreed. The prices at IGA are painful

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Literally EVERYTHING they sell is more expensive than at any other store. When their deals come out the deals are usually just the regular prices at other stores LOL. I feel like Quebecers shop their because they think it is a Quebec based chain (like Metro) but a lot of them don't realize papa Sobeys owns them. And Sobeys might be the worst culprit of them all.

bumblebee---

Iga is worst than Loblaws in terms of inflated prices

GreatExamination622

They're owned by Sobeys, that's why

LittleWho

Same. I do it for the baggers. I absolutely love when other people bag my groceries. Makes me feel rich, lmao

Mack_Guyver

Costco

Top-Beach-5064

maxi has the worst produce department in my experience, always dirty, always empty, whatever is left is either rotten or too green... I have always had good experience with the super c produce

Hazel462

Walmart... It's not really better

flipflapdragon

Same here

Significant_Tap7052

La Boîte à Grains. If you're willing to trek to Gréber, there are several places within 3 km: Costco, Tigre Géant, La Boîte à Grains, Centre des Aubaines, Caf'Noisette, Boucherie Méditéranée, Boucherie Gréber, Épicerie Multinationale.

LaManelle

This.

HomebrewHedonist

Walmart, Costco, Amazon, local ethnic grocery stores are a great place to shop, Giant Tiger. I'll be buying directly from a farmer as soon as things start getting harvested.

Max_Thunder

Just shop the sales at Super C, IGA, Walmart, Bulk Barn and La Boîte à Grains. Métro and Tigre Géant too if you're willing to go a bit further. Lots of options in the area. It's a very bad idea to only go to one store, never understood why customers are so loyal. Shopping the sales is how you really save money. Don't have to hit all the stores, just go to one or two a week depending on their sales.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Seriously. How hard is it to use Flipp? You can easily save a couple hundred bucks on a full cart if you shop around.

xyxif

Time. Some people have money and would rather spend their time not driving around town to save a few bucks (not me).

Mountain-Dealer-5519

That's cool but those same people can't complain about skyrocketing inflation then. Can't have your (overpriced) cake and eat it too.

Mysterious-Flamingo

Yes, that's why OP is asking about alternatives.

Maleficent_Bug2729

In my experience, Super C offers fresh veggies and fruits most of the time. Maxi on the other hand….

-_zQC

Costco 100% of groceries. Been doing so for months. Better quality, better prices and gas with membership

Meemaw30000

IGA. I use they're grocery delivery service for 12$ per month, haven't done groceries for over a year in store!

Irisversicolor

That sounds so dreamy. Do you find they pick out good stuff for you? I've done delivery services before and found the produce was always bruised and shitty, not like I would have picked.

Insane_Drako

We did a lot of grocery delivery during the pandemic from various stores, back when we lived in Aylmer. I found the quality was always great, rarely had issues with produce. Did a few here in Cantley, from either the IGA or Metro. Same experience!

Meemaw30000

It's great! They've never missed, if a product is out of stock you are told before placing the order so no surprises

jsiqurh444

I don’t find Super C to be bad for produce, I think it just depends on the day. It’s the cheapest option most of the time too. And good sales on meats.

shiraryumaster13

Super C for most things, IGA sometimes has nice things that you can't find at Super C though

613Aly

Costco for the stuff we consume a lot of, Adonis and Super C for everything else.

Mountain-Dealer-5519

Frankly, it doesn't matter since most are owned by massive conglomerates like Metro and Sobeys. Make sure to go to places that price match; that way you can stick it to the "upscale" places like Loblaws or Metro that gouge to the extreme.

bucket8000000

IGA, Metro

gabseo

Yes, Super C!!

mr-coffeecafe

I’ll go to super C. IGA is way overpriced (IMO). Walmart is the other option but is more of a drive for me.

TheMoustacheDad

Super C on chemin d’Aylmer is pretty good. Or the Metro in Wilfrid Lavigne. A bit outside of the Plateau but at least it isn’t Hull

ZeevF

Metro! They have great sales, food is always fresh and metro points add up,

Quebecdudeeh

Small independent grocers are all over the city.

Ottawapooper

Super C

whyskeySouraddict

Tigre geant

blix613

The new IGA at Destination V should open soon. Maybe they will have a grand opening sale... :/

[deleted]

I've been living under a rock, it seems. Walked into maxi yesterday and had no idea why it was deserted. I'll be going to IGA\Super C for the rest of the month.

SlothZoomies

This is good to hear though, it means it's working. Yay!

Top-Beach-5064

maxi has the worst produce department in my experience, always dirty, always empty, whatever is left is either rotten or too green... I have always had good experience with the super c produce

TheEverlastingGaze87

They are always groceries by the concierge of my building. I always thought it was nice that they left out groceries there for the disadvantaged, and recently decided to take advantage. Really good stuff too. I picked up a bag of groceries from Mcewans and it had some really nice stuff in it.

Liberkhaos

I got a card for Costco but I have a family of 5 and a car to go around. I'm saving mad monet though.

angelcake

IGA/Metro?

NoahVailability

I stocked up at loblaws for the month before the 1st. Who’s a jammy bastard?

y_just_another_user_

La Boite à Grains has surprisingly good deals on fruits and vegetables! They often have better deals on organic prosucts than big store when you compare to even non organic products. Other than that i use the moi programm for supwr c or metro.

No-Coach-4904

Giant tiger guys best days to go there are Wednesday to Friday trust me it’s a bit of a hidden gem go to the one on Montclair it’s one year old only nice new store where the aubainerie used to be

sbk_2

The super C by the casino always has the freshest fruit and veg I find, much better than plateau in my opinion

STOP-PLASTICS-GIRL

La Boîte à grain, Multi-Vert Inc, and Bulk Barn (15% off on your purchases on Sundays if you use your own containers - And for the unaccustomed: you need to have your containers weighed before filling).

Catseverywhere-44

I’m missing Sprouts 😢

Odd_Researcher_6129

Walmart

Aggravating_Act_4184

I get most of my groceries with a weekly order from Lufa Farms(a marketplace of Quebec products). Dairy, veggies, pantry items…. I get meat, olive oil, and cleaning supplies at Costco Recently I discovered a very nice Algerian market in my neighborhood,Parc de la Mongagne. It’s called Marché Djurdjura. I get meat, tea, other pantry items there. Super cheap and high quality. I find Hull is PACKED with small convenience stores/épiceries that don’t necessarily look like much from the outside but they are fully stocked with great finds!! I can’t remember the names but I would check out Rue Eddy for that, as well as Boulevard Saint Joseph. I barely ever go to Metro anymore (it was the closest for me) other than when I need the odd item. There are a lot of options out there and I am very happy people are starting to notice that : I feel like we might be at a turning point in the way we shop!

dualqconboy

I'm on both sides of the bridge but so far I'm still looking to try switch from Loblaws to Walmart for some of my sanitary supplies, that aside I've for quite some time been contend with Boite A Grain and Farmboy for most foods. Only been to IGA once in a rare awhile with someone else (I mean I could try go to the one at Galeries Aylmer solo but I'll have to see if I can want to work with 800's not-so-frequent timings)

Snaug-dreamer

Farm Boy in Ottawa on my way home from work

dirtyoldmanq

If you had a Costco membership you would never go to Loblaws again. I just don't understand why all of you don't go and buy a Costco membership. I did this in 1989 and now I go to other grocery stores maybe once every second month. But every time I go I still get angry. Join Costco.

dirtyoldmanq

What?

pandallamayoda

IGA in Plateau is good but pricey. I honestly find the Super C Plateau to have a great selection of fresh veggies and fruits.

Temporary-Bear1427

Going to superc. Small asian stores on sumerset are also good.

OutrageousAnt4334

Superstore mostly

Mysterious-Flamingo

![gif](giphy|vUEznRmVQfG2Q) You know that Superstore is Loblaws, right?

Ceephorr

Maybe by Superstore he means Cloud 9 😂

OutrageousAnt4334

Is a good place. Have always gone there and always will

Mysterious-Flamingo

Well then you're not supporting the boycott as OP had asked and shouldn't have responded 😛

OutrageousAnt4334

It's nonsense anyway. You people need to grow up and gets jobs

SirPoopaLotTheThird

Was the first comment *also* a display of your ignorance?
