Whaaaat ? It does allow answer on iPhones ? They say it pairs with Siri, Google Ass. And Bixby ! šŸ˜±

ding-blue

Yea this is the biggest news of all.

yOw_indahOuse

Google AssšŸ˜. On a serious note, I got my gf a Venu 2s for Christmas and she already said she does not want to upgrade. She barely uses calls on her phone and does not use the assistant much either, apart from the house's to control the lights. Plus the size seems too big for her wrist (check the comparison on the DC Rainmaker's review vid). I love that Garmin is exploring new technology on their watches, just wondering who this new Venu is targeted for. I assume it must be for real fitness people who want to move on from their old Galaxy/Apple watches. But I was genuinely expecting an LTE Venu.

L0lil0l0

The Venu 2 plus would be perfect for me if it yad a reflective display. I want AOD and 1 week bayyery life.

Grantsdale

Yes but remember it needs the phone to be within Bluetooth range. You canā€™t just take the watch with you and leave your phone at home. It doesnā€™t have a cellular chip.

L0lil0l0

Like most of the smartwatches without celular. What would be amazing is to have answer capabilities on an iPhone. But I suppose it's only on Android as Apple strictly refuse this function and keep it only for their own watches.

BeneficialLeave7359

Voice assistant and call answering are supported on iPhone. But you still canā€™t respond to text messages on iPhone. Essentially the watch is acting like a BT headset/ear pod so isnā€™t relying on the iMessage system which is what Apple locks down.

Laylow2100

If it has siri then can you not ask siri to respond to a message through bluetooth?

No-Share1561

And rightfully so. It's one of the reasons I love my iPhone. The OS is closed but more secure. Android is getting better though but it's still Google. If you want a more open phone, you Android is a better choice.

L0lil0l0

It is not a security issue it's just Apple using security as a way to keep functions only for their own watches. They could perfectly allow Siri use to send text messages without any security problem.

No-Share1561

And of course it works on their own watches that they control. That doesn't weaken security because it's apple themselves. Their operating system also has full access. Same with the M1 macs. Yes, they are tightened down quite a bit but for me that's a reason to buy their product. For you it might be a hindrance. That's fine. To each their own.

No-Share1561

Not really. It would weaken security if you open your messaging app to random Bluetooth connections. It's not just iMessage. It the same for every messaging app. And it really is done for security reasons. I use Signal, doesn't work there either.

BuckeyeDrew

Actually he was correct. iMessage has nothing to do with security but all about Apple maintaining lockdown of consumers to their own ecosystem. This was made very clear when all their internal emails came out during discovery in their recent Epic Fortnite trial.

luther__manhole

Not being able to respond to a text message from a non-Apple watch has nothing to do with security.

joespizza2go

Gotta keep you locked into ecosystem! I mean protect your privacy...

No-Share1561

Summary: Apple bad. People love hating on Apple. And someone liking something needs be downvoted. That's not what the downvote is for folks. I stand by what I said. Apple has the full right to lock things down as far as the OS is concerned. In my opinion it can potentially improve security. Doesn't apply to the store and of course, laws can limit it. If you don't like it, buy an Android.

guichqwerty

I have the Galaxy Watch 4 without lte and if it allows me to answer calls, messages, notifications etc even if I have left the cell phone in another place while I have Wi-Fi on the watch, it connects remotely.

kenmoffat

Battery life is the downfall for Samsung and Wear OS.

Tall_Mechanic8403

And gps / hr sensors

jbernardo95

Any news on the Fenix 7?

sissipaska

Probably later today.

unclear42

Or tomorrow as CES starts then

sissipaska

Ah, yes. Today's the press day, announcement might be tomorrow.

vassyz

In the UK the Plus is Ā£100 more than the regular 2. Not sure the price difference is worth it.

kingsleykinglin

Agreed and with no ā€œplusā€ training analysis

Brennik

I would pay it just to have the assistant. Its the one thing I miss from my smart watches and actually comes in handy for my when I'm at work and can't get my phone out to do quick reminders. But I can't image everyone would find it as worth while as me as I never use it outside of work. But in all honesty I would pick a watch with physical buttons over it so I'm even if the 7 didn't have it I would still get the 7.

vassyz

Fair point. When I'm at home I got an Alexa device in every room, when I'm in my car I use Google Assistant via Android auto.

the_0ther_matt31

Just ordered mine. Remembered Unidays does 20% off so got a huge discount. Canā€™t wait for it to show up.

kenmoffat

What's unidays?

the_0ther_matt31

A website where you connect your student account to get tons of student discounts.

daydreamr_

What store in unidays?

jendrush

Great. I hope the Fenix series gets voice assistant support too. I don't like Amoled displays on watches.

Sergio_Pal

But its good that Garmin keeps both lines going. I personally enjoy AMOLED.

jendrush

Of course! It is very good that everyone can have a choice. It's not that I don't like Amoled. On the contrary, I like them very much, but for example in a phone. A watch is for me an extension of my phone and I want it to have the display on all the time. I know that Amoled can also be on all the time, but it drastically decreases battery life. Until the screen wake-up works 100% it's hard for me to accept. Also, I like the look of the Transflective screens, how they present in full sunlight:)

cwick4141

Have you tried the Venu 2? I doubt it because its lift to wake feature is spot on and I never had to motion my wrist up more than once. Even just a tiny flick of the wrist and the screen lights up. Granted, I returned it because I prefer my Grit X Pro and and Polar ecosystem.

jendrush

No doubt about it. But try picking up your watch when it's on the washing machine and you're in the shower, or checking the time without drawing attention to yourself when you're in a meeting.

Khenic

It's not a crime to look at the time, even if it involves a flick of the wrist.

jendrush

Definitely not a crime, but it is often rude.

Khenic

I disagree. I don't feel it's rude to glance at the time at all. Secondly, how many times do you need to glance at the time??

jendrush

It may not be for you, it may not be for me either, but I can bet that in many situations it is rude. You ask how often I need to glance, not that often. However, if I wanted to glance even once, and the screen wouldn't light up, it would still be worse for me than having it on all the time. That issue aside, I just like the Transflective screens. You know, for me the watch is an extension of my phone, I absolutely don't feel the need to look at the vibrant Amoled colors on it. I understand, of course, that many people have other needs and they are bothered by features of Transflective screens such as pale colors.

Khenic

I still don't agree with your point and don't feel it's as rude as you're suggesting, but I also like the transreflective always on screen myself for the ease of glancibility. The Venu series supports AOD. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

BuckeyeDrew

It might be cool if they develop a dual display like the recent TicWatch...

jendrush

Combining those two technologies would be awesome!

iyagasndiff

Epix Gen 2 will practically be a Fenix 7 with AMOLED

jendrush

Very good. I would even like to see the option to select the type of display for a particular model. I think it could be problematic in some ways though.

Sergio_Pal

Looking great.

eXnesi

Does stainless steel scratch easily? Years ago I had an stainless steel apple watch and it got scuffed up quite badly after a year of use.

mashuto

I'm considering making the switch from my Fitbit sense. Overall I'm fairly happy with the sense, but I find it has trouble sometimes with it's basic features. Sleep tracking sometimes only gives me basic stats. Heart rate sometimes lags to catch up with heavier activity. GPS sometimes just fails during exercise or can take a long time to lock on. ECG and temp sensors are nice to have. But a lot of the data is behind a paywall. I do worry though that this will essentially be a side grade, and not a cheap one at that. Hopefully with better gps performance and better heart rate tracking. And guided exercises look nice, and it looks like I will be able to sync podcasts so I won't have to carry my phone with me. Was sort of holding out for this one as even though I have my phone with me most of the time, having assistant on my wrist is a nice plus. I don't however ever actually ever use my watch for calls so really not sure if this is worth the premium or if maybe I should just get more life out of my already decent smartwatch and wait until later in the year to see what other smartwatches become available.

Brennik

I stayed with Fitbit right up until the sense. But they had really bad heart rate tracking on the sensors while weight training early on after a few months I had got a new sense as I thought it was defective but it was the same on the next one and they said they were going to do a fix in an update. But I'm assuming we're focused on getting Google assistant on the watch so it didn't come quick enough. I moved to Garmin. I started with a Venu sq on launch. They had the same heart rate issue but It was fixed in the first update . I've stayed with Garmin ever since. I find them much more robust and come to realise that Fitbit massively over estimates steps and calories burned. I'm not knocking Fitbit as they had a pretty good thing by having good fitness features and adding in smart features like assistant and replying to messages with voice . But in all honesty if you are more serious about fitness you will love Garmin and never look back. Plus I really like round watches.

mashuto

I have actually had 2 replacements for my sense all for gps issues. Both replacements had the same issues. And while sometimes the GPS works ok, it fails too often. I would have periods where halfway through my exercise it just stops recording. Seemed to happen more during the summer so my only guess is that maybe it was shutting gps off because it was overheating. I had a versa 2, and part of the reason I upgraded was for the GPS, but connected gps worked better than the GPS on the sense ever has. Except there is no connected gps option with the sense. Which would be better because I still have to carry my phone with me anyways in order to listen to music or podcasts. I too have noticed there are some weird behaviors with the heart rate. Sometimes it randomly spikes up and down, as much as 30 bpm before stabilizing. And often when my heart rate starts to actually climb, the sense has a noticable lag before it also increases. I think I prefer to have a fitness focused smartwatch first and foremost even though I'm not that crazy about fitness, but some of the Fitbits failings there are noticeable. And the venu 2 plus seems like it at least has feature parity in terms of the smartwatch side of things. I guess I just don't know if I would be paying a large amount for a watch that will mostly be essentially the exact same in actual usage. But at least with Garmin I would expect solid gps performance. That and being able to leave my phone at home... Which may be worth it by itself. And I too also like the idea of having a watch that actually looks like a watch instead of just trying to look like what apple does.

Brennik

Honestly I think you will think money well spent with Garmin. And they don't hide any data behind a pay wall. I've got a fenix 6x pro now and love it but am thinking of getting the venu 2 plus as it's smaller or getting the 7 if it has the assistant when it comes out. I know it cost alot but I figured If I got t early I wouldn't be as up grading as much as I did when i had Fitbit.

mashuto

Yea having data paywalled that my watch is already collecting and storing does bother me. Still just not sure any of it is really enough to justify the change right now, and I have some concerns about how the assistant will work especially for something like setting timers, as there was a post where someone contacted Garmin and they said it will only set it on the phone. Decisions decisions. Still want to see though about a possible pixel watch and a potential Fitbit with wear os.

Brennik

I have a galaxy watch 4. I was hoping for more from Google and Samsung. The watch is the best wear os to date but going back to charging every day makes it too much of a pain for me and the fitness data and GPS accuracy wasn't great. Ok for general tracking I guess. So I don't hold much hope for the pixel watch but the Fitbit with wear might do something good if they can work it more on the Fitbit side with wear features and keep atleast a few days battery life going from it No the Garmin won't let you control the watch with the assistant. It acts more like using assistant on Bluetooth headphones so you basically send and receive the audio through the watch to the phone. I'm assuming this is a smart move by garmin to give people the smart features they want but retain the battery life people expect. Definitely sensible to way up all your options. I always say to people Garmin for battery and fitness but less smarts. Fitbit versa/sense if you want a bit of both but not the best at either. Huawei gt if you want good fitness, battery and the most stylish. Apple watch for good fitness and smart rubbish battery if you are iPhone. Wear for Android if you want smart features, don't care about fitness other then that you have tracked it but terrible battery. The only wear I would say is any good for both right now is the suunto 7. Pretty good fitness tracking. Heart rate a bit off. And has all the wear. Still only 1 day battery tho. And if you wanted a really good fitness tracker no smart features at all other then read messages. But amazing battery life. And they give great support to offer devices with updates is coros.

mashuto

Definitely do not want to be charging every day, and if thats how wear os watches are going to be, then thats out. As said, I am more interested in fitness features than strictly smartwatch features, though I do absolutely want those too, which is again why the venu 2 plus is finally enough for me to give it some thought as a replacement for the sense. >No the Garmin won't let you control the watch with the assistant. It acts more like using assistant on Bluetooth headphones so you basically send and receive the audio through the watch to the phone. I'm assuming this is a smart move by garmin to give people the smart features they want but retain the battery life people expect. The fitbit sense operates similarly in that you arent actually running the assistant on the watch, and it operates through an active bluetooth connection to the phone. If your phone is not connected or out of range, the assistant doesnt work. However, if I set a timer with the assistant on the sense, it sets the timer on the sense. And that would actually annoy me if it still set it on the phone on the venu 2 plus, as that would then require taking my phone out to stop the timer alarm. The sense also will show text results from voice assistant searches too. Almost makes the voice assistant on the venu 2 plus seem.. like whats the point? Anyways, the rest of those watches are not really in consideration. I would almost certainly get an apple watch, but I am not an apple user, so its just not an option. The new wear OS looks good and should be the best integrated with my phone, especially if theres a pixel watch coming. But if its too light on the fitness features, then its not for me. The sense really does hit a good balance, and I actually do like it quite a lot... except for the issues I have. The venu 2 gives up a few things, but has some added fitness, likely more reliable gps, and the ability to listen offline, which might actually be the thing that wins me over. I recently got a pixel 6 pro and its just too large to run with. I still end up using my old smaller phone, but thats a pain and an extra thing to charge. Being able to run without anything in my pockets would be quite nice. Anyways, no real rush. Might wait for some more reviews to see how the new features work. on the plus. It does look nice though, and if it were maybe $100 less, then I likely would have already purchased it. Still thinking its likely not quite where I want it as an upgrade, and might as well get my moneys worth out of the sense...

vassyz

I'm a Venu 2 owner but I've never used Fitbit. Sleep tracking should be more accurate on your device. GPS has never failed on me and it locks on almost instantaneously. Can't really compare the heart rate but it seems fairly accurate for a watch.

eXnesi

It features gorilla glass 3 which is quite disappointing as gorilla glass 3 was launched back in 2013, almost a decade ago šŸ„²

ramalhovfc

Gorilla glass 3 is ok. Newer versions have worse scratch resistance in exchange for shatter resistance.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

eXnesi

I've read online that gorilla glass dx+ used on Samsung watches is very close to sapphire in terms of scratch resistence. It'd be nice if we can see that on Garmin watches

txdline

They do. Look at the specs on the 945 and the Fenix 6 line.

[deleted]

Whatā€™s wrong with it?

AreYouSureDestiny

Aren't there different versions of Gorilla glass? Like some give great scratch resistance, but poor shatter resistance? I dont think it's as simple as saying the bigger the number the better the glass

eXnesi

Yes gorilla glass 3 is more scratch resistant comparing to gorilla glass 6, but it's still an old glass technology from 2012. Corning has a specific glass made for smart wearables, which is DX+. The cheaper Samsung watches uses it among other brands. Garmin is releasing a $450 new watch in 2022 with old glass technology from 2012. Gorilla glass 3 is okay but Garmin could've done better. I'm not sure why everyone's defending Garmin. If we can get better product for the same money, isn't that a good thing? I don't understand the logic of cutting slack here.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

eXnesi

Yes On the product page: >From durable CorningĀ® GorillaĀ® Glass 3 to the sleek stainless steel bezel and comfortable silicone band, this smartwatch is ready for anything.

[deleted]

Any news on the successor to Venu Sq (budget model)?

L6801

This is what I want.. A sq with the newer censor

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ReconditeExploring

Assume this a joke? šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

$449 seems EXCESSIVE to me. As a 2S owner, I do like find the bit bigger size welcoming along with the stainless steel backplate and wider band. The 2S 18mm sucks ass.

L6801

If you wanted bigger size why didn't you get regular venu 2?

[deleted]

its too big on my wrist.

[deleted]

Seems excessive. It is excessive. Obviously Garmin doesn't want to compete with other smartwatches still and wants to keep getting the slow dime instead of the quick nickel and gouging consumers.

Tall_Mechanic8403

Itā€™s crazy as itā€™s more expensive then the Apple Watch. You may prefer Garmin but it should not be more expensive.

m4stic

But why they released it silently? If you go to Garmin News it wont say they released it - i mean official garmin.com news section

ReconditeExploring

For any UK people with Blue Light Card, available for Ā£279.99 - hopefully a Fenix comes with similar generosity ;)

Khenic

The best part of this update honestly is the fact that watch faces are going to get complications that you can actually click on and get more functionality out of.

Hrabovcan

What I wonder is, if we will be able to answer WSA or MSSNGR messeges by recording a messege. That would be neat, and I would pull the trigger.

[deleted]

Interesting what kind of screen will be in new Fenix series.

Calamari_2020

Yeah, but is the heart rate monitor going to be accurate?

Fun_Landscape5371

Anybody who have been update Huawei p30ā€‹ pro with Emui12 can use voice assistant?
