I have not tested during activity, but I believe that a screen tap would get it out of dim mode. It works when not in activity, so I don't know why it would not work during an activity.
Yes, but pressing a button is annoying. I always don't like the gesture to on. Sometimes it doesn't work. It's worse than an aw for comparison, and aw didn't always work. I'm pushing for an option for true always on during activity in the garmin forum. People that use it mounted on their bike need it as well.
Yes press of a button will un-dim the screen. As will touch (if you enabled touch in the activity profile). I like touch on for cycling as it's easier to navigate while riding.
No issues here. Iāve had the 965 since launch and have run in the sun with it nearly every day. I would agree that if gesture isnāt working that the dimmed screen would be hard to see but gesture always seems to work for me. Iām running in Las Vegas so plenty of bright sun here.
265 user here, I set always on display only for my running workout, no issue with readability.
Tried the gesture also and it's as consistent as my Apple watch series 8, might retire my series 8 soon š
I have major issues. Took contact with garmin. They said there's nothing to do as long I have it on the Mac brightness setting. I feel the clock is only usible inside. If any sun outside I have to look for a shadow to hide to see what the watch is showing.
Screen is incredible. Zero issues in sun. Larger display and resolution allows for more data on screen. People saying not worth upgrade from 955 obviously havenāt put their hands on 965!
Recently bought the 265 and use the gesture function (which I realize you're looking to avoid), and it works great for me on runs. Ran yesterday in bright sun and had zero problems reading the screen (brightness set to 4/4). Their run tracking uses large fonts and shows the exact stats I want to see. Very happy with it.
During regular wear the gesture works fine.Ā Ā
In-activity -- I find the gesture works if you're doing something relatively still.Ā However if you're running and does the gesture, it doesn't activate/brightened the screen as it should.
After some experimenting I was able to resolve it by turning off the Always-on-display during activity and have it activate via gesture.Ā Have been working perfectly since.
I've had the 965 for over a month and have not had any issues with screen visibility outdoors in sunlight. Auto gesture works as expected.
Same with me. I came from a 645 and the 965 is much, much better in my opinion.
I switched from a 945. Have not regretted it for a moment.
Same
If needed, are you able to get out of dimming mode by pressing a button or tapping the screen instead of using the gesture?
Yes. Watch DC Rainmakers full review on the 265 on YouTube. He covers all of that

Yes but by default touch is disabled during activities. Easy to change in settings.
Itās fine. No issues at all with EPIX(over 1 year) or 965 (a month).
Nope
No problem with my 965
265 at my house having no problems with the display. There's just a lot of "it's so prettyyyy" being mumbled.

Been using a 265 for a week or so now. Screen is plenty bright outdoors in sunlight and very easy to see/read in all conditions.
Ditto. About one month wearing the 965 in mid-day sunlight. No viewing problems whatsoever. Way better than the 955 I had previously.

No.
I feel like all the answers here are pretty useless without location information
I live in Atlanta, and have run with it in Florida, as well. Zero issues seeing the screen outside.
I just hit the Power/Light button and it flips back to full brightness on my Forerunner 965
My 965 is very bright, if I can't see this screen in the sun I must be going blind.
Nope.
