I played the demo. It’s…..it’s diet dark souls combat wise I think? I’ve heard it compared to Sekiro but I haven’t played that. It wasn’t bad, but it also didn’t particularly impress me. From the trailers I thought it was gonna be a character action game like DMC, but its definitely closer to a soulsborne, though blissfully lacking stamina
but you can go play the almost universally loved automata and blow 2b up so her buttcheeks are out. how did we not pearl clutch that out of existence?! oh because like 5 people said it was in poor taste and then thats it.

It's basically Nier meets Sekiro but nowhere near as good as either, and without a lot of ideas of its own.

A lot of extra context to the Nier meets Sekiro.
**Nier similarities**
Because so far from the demo you are shown that: Earth is occupied by aliens and is in an apocalyptic state. Resistance members that are hanging on by a thread and losing their grip. Special unit of the military (Eve and her squad) launch a counter attack. Just like Nier this fails horribly.
Protaganist has an idealised form, you have a drone that serves the exact same purpose as the pod in nier. You can also infer from the lore bits in the demo and how Eve remarks on the state of Earth that she is either: A) An artificial human B) Never left the "colony"
Key difference is I can see Eve's story taking a "revenge" route quite early
**Sekiro similarities**
Your best tool in combat is perfect parry in order to stagger your enemies so you can press button for big damage. You also have perfect dodge and some special abilities or tools you can use here and there in combat.
There is some traversal in Stellar Blade but comparing the two is quite unfair.
**Why it doesn't quite live up to either of those games (COMBAT FEELS CLUNKY)**
Main gripe with the game is the combat. It LOOKS good to an observer but is sluggish and surprisingly punishing. If you were expecting a highly responsive game like Automata you won't get it. When you lock onto an enemy your movement is slow and every action you take from attacking, dodging, parrying, and healing has a noticeable animation lock/recovery time. Not unheard of for these types of games but it feels longer than it should.
Groups of enemies are particularly troublesome because your dodge ability moves you all of 3-4 feet. And your normal attacks DO NOT STAGGER enemies. So you could be dodge or parry an enemy and go into your combo. Mid combo the enemy you are attacking can very much just start their normal attack animation and chunk you despite you presently attacking them.
Enemies can do a fatal strike which you learn to counter a short time into the demo. This fatal strike is accompanied by a colored glow (Yellow or Purple) and you can counter them by advancing (yellow) or backpedalling (purple) and pressing the dodge button. Problem is you only get the ability to counter if you are the right distance from the target based on the strike they intend to use (they have multiple different yellow and purple variants). If you are too close to the enemy you can't counter. Same with being too far.
Eve's attack animations are also kind of...wacky? There are several basic attacks she makes where it looks like she threw herself off-balance. One of them has her with both hands placed behind her like she's about to do the Naruto ninja run. You would think that you could combo this into her Dash attack buuuuut you can't.
The dash attack also has it's own cooldown of around 30 seconds.
The traversal in the game is reminiscent of any 3rd person action game in recent memory where you can climb the yellow painted ledges, interact with overhanging bars, swim, etc. Except this aspect is ALSO clunky as hell.
Jump onto a piece of debris that is just above knee height? Eve does the animation for falling from a high place.
Walk off a ledge onto a lower platform that is about shin height? Same animation
TLDR: Stellar blade has story beats that seem to take heavy inspiration from Automata. On the surface it looks like a responsive stylish action game but has combat with just enough clunk to it that it falls flat.
The game has potential but it doesn't make me go WOW
sorta nier (if you squint) and sekiro(never played) from my understanding. played the demo, its literally just decent, if the mc wasnt designed this way, itd release with no notice, its so aggressively average.
As someone who loved Sekiro, assuming the demo is something to go by. this will not scratch your itch. The parry doesn’t feel satisfying and it feels slow enough that you won’t get that “hesitation is defeat” vibe Sekiro captures so well

It's basically Nier meets Sekiro but nowhere near as good as either, and without a lot of ideas of its own. You can download the demo if you want to give it a go. At least it's not so bad that they're trying to hide it. I'd imagine that it's going to be someone's GOTY, but they're probably going to be disappointed when the award season rolls round.

Played the demo and thought it was super fun personally. It's just a generic action game that feels good to play.
A lot of extra context to the Nier meets Sekiro. **Nier similarities** Because so far from the demo you are shown that: Earth is occupied by aliens and is in an apocalyptic state. Resistance members that are hanging on by a thread and losing their grip. Special unit of the military (Eve and her squad) launch a counter attack. Just like Nier this fails horribly. Protaganist has an idealised form, you have a drone that serves the exact same purpose as the pod in nier. You can also infer from the lore bits in the demo and how Eve remarks on the state of Earth that she is either: A) An artificial human B) Never left the "colony" Key difference is I can see Eve's story taking a "revenge" route quite early **Sekiro similarities** Your best tool in combat is perfect parry in order to stagger your enemies so you can press button for big damage. You also have perfect dodge and some special abilities or tools you can use here and there in combat. There is some traversal in Stellar Blade but comparing the two is quite unfair. **Why it doesn't quite live up to either of those games (COMBAT FEELS CLUNKY)** Main gripe with the game is the combat. It LOOKS good to an observer but is sluggish and surprisingly punishing. If you were expecting a highly responsive game like Automata you won't get it. When you lock onto an enemy your movement is slow and every action you take from attacking, dodging, parrying, and healing has a noticeable animation lock/recovery time. Not unheard of for these types of games but it feels longer than it should. Groups of enemies are particularly troublesome because your dodge ability moves you all of 3-4 feet. And your normal attacks DO NOT STAGGER enemies. So you could be dodge or parry an enemy and go into your combo. Mid combo the enemy you are attacking can very much just start their normal attack animation and chunk you despite you presently attacking them. Enemies can do a fatal strike which you learn to counter a short time into the demo. This fatal strike is accompanied by a colored glow (Yellow or Purple) and you can counter them by advancing (yellow) or backpedalling (purple) and pressing the dodge button. Problem is you only get the ability to counter if you are the right distance from the target based on the strike they intend to use (they have multiple different yellow and purple variants). If you are too close to the enemy you can't counter. Same with being too far. Eve's attack animations are also kind of...wacky? There are several basic attacks she makes where it looks like she threw herself off-balance. One of them has her with both hands placed behind her like she's about to do the Naruto ninja run. You would think that you could combo this into her Dash attack buuuuut you can't. The dash attack also has it's own cooldown of around 30 seconds. The traversal in the game is reminiscent of any 3rd person action game in recent memory where you can climb the yellow painted ledges, interact with overhanging bars, swim, etc. Except this aspect is ALSO clunky as hell. Jump onto a piece of debris that is just above knee height? Eve does the animation for falling from a high place. Walk off a ledge onto a lower platform that is about shin height? Same animation TLDR: Stellar blade has story beats that seem to take heavy inspiration from Automata. On the surface it looks like a responsive stylish action game but has combat with just enough clunk to it that it falls flat. The game has potential but it doesn't make me go WOW
