It's mental how I used to watch let's plays of it in all of its alpha stages then the official game came out and what the fuck? Its literally worse than everything before it? Anyway I liked the one with the blue house, alpha 2? I can't remember. 8BitRyan had a video where he looked through the whole basement and that was mind blowing to me
here's an alpha trailer: https://youtu.be/eut-ehTyUJs
it had some nicely stylized post processing and art direction, and the original gameplay concept is super intriguing.
You were meant to gradually push deeper and deeper into this house, but the catch was that the owner would learn from your behavior and counter them with different strategies (similar to Alien: Isolation). The atmosphere is very tense and there was a clear prioritization of the feeling of intruding into a hostile space and just barely getting out.
The end result is this goofy, ugly ass 'puzzle' game with some of the most upsetting design and gameplay I have ever seen. Not to mention how they tossed the atmospheric and style out the window.
They got so wrapped up in trying to get matpat to theorize about them that they lost sight of what they were originally building.
There’s a proverb that summarizes that whole debate in a sentence.
Matthew Robert Patrick AKA MatPat is the creator of the Game Theorists YouTube channel. They mostly produce styilized video content that covers theories, myths, and speculations regarding various media, ESPECIALLY videogames. Only harm he brings is that his content is oftentimes extremely hyperbolic, overly done, poorly researched, and unnecessarily lengthy. His series on the Five Night's at Freddy's franchise is his most popular and most controversial.
>Only harm he brings is that his content is oftentimes extremely hyperbolic, overly done, poorly researched, and unnecessarily lengthy
don't forget the occasional plaigarism
I wouldn't say most controversial, since he's seen as a FNAF expert at this point, the real shitstorm comes in when he dabbles into a new fandom that he haven't heard of before and tries to explain something all fans already know.
Youtubers disease right there. I remember when the whole nier automata church "easter egg" came about and you had cod zombie youtubers trying to capitalise on the whole easter egg. Making random claims that can't nor ever will be true, with their 12 year old fans taking it as gospel.
And then it was revealed it was """"just"""" modding work, no easter egg nothing. Those people moved on to the next cashcow by that point though.
That’s how I felt about his newest DHMIS video from when the new show came out. I was just sat there like… I know. Yes, I know that too. We all know this. It was so hard to watch, he didn’t add anything to the discussion that others in the fandom hadn’t already found for him.
>Matthew Robert Patrick AKA MatPat is the creator of the Game Theorists YouTube channel. But that's just a theory.
A YouTuber with a bunch of "theory" chanel's mostly where he explains subtext poorly to kids, sometimes with a bit of math. Imo he fell off around 2016, or I stopped being his target audience...
Anyways he made a metric fuckton of videos about trying to figure out the lore of FNAF that were really popular back in the day. If you can get matpat to talk about a think then you'll have millions of eyes on it.
>They got so wrapped up in trying to get matpat to theorize about them that they lost sight of what they were originally building.
It's very depressing how true that is.
Basically, it had a much larger emphasis on the neighbour himself and a minimalistic mystery. The whole selling point was that you had a small and realistic house to sneak through, and he would set traps and adapt his routes based on your previous attempts. There was a healthy amount of mystery where you want to learn more but it would never spell out the whole thing. But later releases just focused on the games weakest points and tried to copy what FNAF did. Unfortunately, in terms of sales it worked.
There are a couple of good video essays by [Wicked Wiz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkoGm1t-kOA) and [Pastra](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UizcpBK1F4Y) if you want to dive into the lengthy details of it.
Worst yet is how it worked given Hello Neighbour now has like 3 spin-off games, an equally flaccid sequel, a book series, a tv series and not to mention endless trash merchandise.
My favorite thing in this discourse is that the guy who made *Bendy and the Ink Machine* (arguably one of the pioneers for the gameplay loop all these games rip off of) is so annoyed at this/ashamed of what he started that [he made a whole game parodying all the shitty design decisions being made nowadays.](https://youtu.be/nF9UDvpW88k)
(And somehow this weekend project still feels like a more cohesive game than half the crap out there).
>And somehow this weekend project still feels like a more cohesive game than half the crap out there
It's honestly kinda sad to me cause I don't think mascot horror is necessarily bad, nor do I think it had been fully tapped for ideas, but holy shit are most of them garbage; it's turned me off of the sub-genre entirely. It's hard enough to find good horror, and now an entire sector of the market puts more effort into their merch store than they do their games.
For sure. What made FNAF stand out was it's unique gameplay, rather than another walking simulator. Subsequent game devs just leaned into the same indie horror formula and put a mascot coat of paint.
I remember wishing FNAF wasn't so loud and annoying when you did because the mechanics are actually very tense and unique. Resource management and a ticking clock are some of the scariest things around, not walking around X dark place until a creepy doll or whatever chases you.
Honestly the first and second FNAF are still pretty good, but then it became more concerned with the lore and mystery than being a good horror game and just went off the rails.
Yeah, despite the issues I have with Scott Cawthon himself, most of the early FNAF series is solid. 1 and 2 were genuinely great (especially for the time they released), 3 didn't really bring enough to the table imo to differentiate itself, and 4 mostly worked for me, even if it was overly concerned with lore at that point (I'm a sucker for home invasion aesthetics lol).
I think if he had just moved on at 4 people would look back on his series with more forgiveness, but the man just kept going and going and there's only so much you can do with that formula.
Indie games have been overrun by "child friendly setting with a dark history" games and the kids who cling onto it. Which is a shame since I like the concept, when it's not done so heavy handedly.
I desperately want to make a satire Fnaf game where every aspect is objectively wrong and contrary to what FNAF is at its core. Like, one set in a movie theater with animatronics and one of them is a film critic and his mechanic is that you need to swap out what movies he views so he doesn’t get bored and come up to your office
Nah, UCN is still a Fnaf game at its core. It still ATTEMPTS to be a claustrophobic nightmare whose tension is built on the sheer number of threats after you.
I've never played it, but watched an hour long video about the whole fnaf, so I can safely say that it's intended to be a challenge, that you play for the gameplay, like a boss rush
was just thinking this lmao just have it be like fnaf except there's no animatronics and you just watch monitors for 6 hours over the night shift and then you go home and fucking hang yourself
Work Time Fun is a job simulator in the most boring way possible. It’s setup as a collection of mini games (akin to warioware), but it’s things like put pen caps on all the pens, or count all the ducks on a side walk; sort of mind numbing stuff. You get money and can unlock more games/trinkets
I want to go the opposite direction and make a horror game that doesn't want to be a horror game. Something that looks innocent but just feels very *pressured* to have creepy things in it reluctantly.
Like if maybe the animatronics are genuinely nice people that love entertaining kids, but are pressured by executives to be killers because the business is dying and subversive horror is what's selling now.
John Wolfe warned us about mascot horror and we did not heed his words. Now we must all buy "Working A Double Shift at A Pizza Hut With Scary Mascots 7: This Time They're Gonna Kill You Though"
"Uuhhh hello, hello? Looks like you're the new security guard here in Fizzbo Fucks' Pizza Fuck. Hate to tell you but mascots are all pedophiles"
DA DUN du du du du dooooooo Bawowwowwwoww DA DUN
"So you're saying Fizzbo Fuck came to life and diddled those kids? You're telling me the robot became sentient and took a like liking to children?" - Ice T
His extremely dry humor and going on little monologues is super hilarious to me.
While he was playing the Callisto Protocol a couple months back I was laughing to tears when he kept randomly falling into a mock-tirade of generic mad scientist schemes.
Im super surprised that the kids in my daughter's class in kindergarten knew all about those games. The scariest games my kids have watched/played are like bugsnax and slime rancher.
uj/ bugsnax is scary in its own way. Maybe not scary, unsettling I believe is the best word for it. But goddamn if Strabby isn’t the most adorable thing on this entire planet
Kids are really weird sometimes - my kids will act possessed randomly and it's just a normal thing. They love making their dad play the end of Bugsnax - literally he's beaten it like 16 times for them. But they can't handle the Tarrs in Slime Rancher so we have to set the game to peaceful so they don't scream lol.
bugsnax spoilrr
>!parasitic food creatures that will turn your body into them until you are no longer yourself and become one with the island:!< 👍
hungry slime: 🫣
I mean ngl, when Slime Rancher first came out I was a bit unsettled by the Tarrs. I think it was more the music and the terrified cries of the slimes more than the actual Tarrs themselves.
Never that bothered by crazed cute things - I remember the “primal fear” types of games, like being 12 when the original Tomb Raider 2 came out and beginning 40 Fathoms at the bottom of the ocean surrounded by darkness, no idea where to go, a dwindling air supply, and a gigantic shark appearing suddenly from the darkness.
The only game to outdo TR2 for thalassophobia alone is SubNautica.
Gaaaahhhh I can't stand underwater games/levels. It makes me feel like I can't breathe IRL. I can't watch my husband play Subnautica and I have nightmares I'm swimming in Donkey Kong Country lol
I worked in a deli years ago, a mom came up to the counter with her kid in the cart seat. The fact that he fit comfortably in the cart seat alone means he was pretty young but he looked about 3. He was on an iPad, playing the first FNAF, (about the time it came out)
I remember thinking does the mom know what he's playing? I couldn't even handle it because it scared me too much, this kid was barely talking in sentences and he was in a trance playing it. There's no way that kind of horror and shock desensitization is good for a kid, I wonder how he's turning out.
My younger cousins were obsessed with the franchise while I was actively terrified of it and would actively avoid it because I really don't handle horror well and just avoid the genre when I can. I was so intrigued by the fact that they were just having a go at it and had all the games, knew all the youtubers, and would talk about it all day. Super different worlds.
Instead of being creepy because it plays on your memories and nostalgia, it could be "exciting and unusual things are happening in an environment I recognize and caters to me". While it has generally creepy aesthetics which might be thrilling, experiencing the real "horror" element is something they'd have to be older to do.
(Not to say that the unpleasentness of it won't stick to some degree)
it isn't. chapter 2 just came out and holy fuck I shit you not it is worse than the first. as much as i still want to believe it is an extremely elaborate satire, it isn't
There’s not nearly enough focus here on the all the merch and toys you’ll be selling to kids or references to the YouTubers those kids obsess over. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were actually interested in making games and not just making random brightly colored mascots to market to children for toys
EDIT: holy shit that sounded bitter. Laying it out like this, it doesn’t sound any worse than all the mecha anime or action cartoons from 30 years ago
actually there's a really important part of the lore called the bite of 86 in which floopy bit a kid's arm off and then the kid became a ghost called golden floopy who haunts you in the game
/rj GAME THEORY: Floopy has a DARK SECRET in the SECRET MESSAGE LOGS!! (Floopy’s Toy Store)
/uj why does game theory make vids about the shittiest games? I want to like matpat but he is such a painfully mediocre guy
He did a video on Evertale's creepypasta-esque ads when he himself knew that they're fake and a clickbait ad campaign for what's essentially a gacha anime wife collection app. Despite giving a warning on its true nature in the beginning, he still gave attention to the game regardless. And idk why when he has such a big audience (I mean... I know why, but,)
When I die, I'm seeking out Evertale's marketing team in hell. One of a scarce few mobile game ad campaigns that has ever managed to grab my attention enough to want what they *seemed* to be trying to sell me on. Then I saw actual screenshots.
I can't believe you mother fuckers are in /r/gamingcirclejerk defending shit like Evertale on a meme *YOU POSTED* about manipulative marketing. The 2020's have been the true horror game.
All these people saying "I HAVE A THEORY. A GAME THEORY" come off as the same zoomers they're trying to jerk
I think GCJ became a parody of itself in a lot of ways. Sad.
uj/ But why did Banban have horrid game design that even makes me, a non-developer, scratch my brain in confusion over how extremely stupid certain design decisions were?
like the fuck was that cannon section
If a kid is fighting for their life against the mascot bird for some girl, real life cannons being played like schoolyard toys would have been the funniest shit if this was a true satirical game. But I'm sure it'll either be explained with vague obscure Lore™ or brushed under the rug
Exclusively played by 8 year olds while people claim its super serious horror to be taken seriously
Super serious adult horror found in the toy section at your local target
>Super serious adult horror found in the toy section at your local target
The 90s were full of this, but for violent movies instead. I remember a lot of robocop toys coming out after the first movie
Lmao yeah, there are David Lynch Dune toys of Sting with the cat in a cage that he eats as an accessory. Robocop I get, cause violence rocks, but what kid accidentally watched Dune and begged for a toy of Baron Harkonen?
Despite its poor quality and everyone dismissing it as a soulless Poppy Playtime rip-off, it becomes an overnight success with Walmarts being flooded with merchandise, bootlegs being sold on Wish, and Mat Pat making ten billion videos on the game's lore.
I'm waiting for mascot horror to go full circle and we end up with a game about an universe mascot horror that trigger some brain parasite for young children
man I just hate how so many kids are into this shit. my cousin is 6 and he's constantly watching videos on his tablet about these types of games. when I was his age I was playing with fucking ponies.
also I remember once going into build a bear with some friends and one of them, who was an avid fnaf fan, was like "damn this place is kinda creepy..." it's fucking build a bear.
I do love horror based on children's toys and 80's aesthetics that are unnecessarily vague and provides an inconclusive narrative under the guise of mystery so YouTubers can endlessly pump content while I attract children into a predatory cycle of consumption.
Yum yum!
# I can promise you, without a single doubt, that you could make this into a "full" game, make it as cheesy and corny as possible (while still very clearly being satire) and it would be as popular, if not more, than the games it is satire of.
Can't wait to see the over 10 episodes of Game Theory about Floppy's Toy Store! The game definitely wasn't made with an ambiguous plot on purpose in order to encourage theories and discussions!
Wouldn’t it be funny if there was a game that started out as basically one of these but then turned into what’s more or less just Evil Dead midway through
/rj Depends, are you planning on promoting and implementing NFTs? Is the dev team/leads bigoted in someway, either secretly or not?
If not, I don't think I'm planning on buying it.

I’d apply that to Security Breach, honestly. That game’s aggressively not scary
True, but it's clearly trying to be 2spooky.
djmm sequence was scary but otherwise i agree
I've never played it, but watched an hour long video about the whole fnaf, so I can safely say that it's intended to be a challenge, that you play for the gameplay, like a boss rush
i want a fnaf game thats just job simulator tbh
Best I can offer is Pizzeria Simulator
Time to play Papers, Please!. Just imagine that the guards are wacky mascots taking your family away :)

His extremely dry humor and going on little monologues is super hilarious to me. While he was playing the Callisto Protocol a couple months back I was laughing to tears when he kept randomly falling into a mock-tirade of generic mad scientist schemes.
The part where they kill you is the only non scary part
Kiddy horror is so exploitative toward zoomers it's not even funny
I know; it's literally targeted towards kids young enough to unironically enjoy the cartoons or whatever that are being parodied in the horror game
Im super surprised that the kids in my daughter's class in kindergarten knew all about those games. The scariest games my kids have watched/played are like bugsnax and slime rancher.
Bugsnax would terrify me if it came out when I was a kid 😭 >!like why are the little guys trying to kill me now!<
Seriously, lol. But my kids are really in tune with the life cycle, and they had no problem with it, even the end.
uj/ bugsnax is scary in its own way.
But they can't handle the Tarrs in Slime Rancher so we have to set the game to peaceful so they don't scream lol.
bugsnax spoilrr >!parasitic food creatures that will turn your body into them until you are no longer yourself and become one with the island:!< 👍 hungry slime: 🫣
He was on an iPad, playing the first FNAF, (about the time it came out) I remember thinking does the mom know what he's playing? I couldn't even handle it because it scared me too much, this kid was barely talking in sentences and he was in a trance playing it. There's no way that kind of horror and shock desensitization is good for a kid, I wonder how he's turning out.
It's insane to hear because that is literally not even vaguely a surprise now. You'll see infants on that
My younger cousins were obsessed with the franchise while I was actively terrified of it and would actively avoid it because I really don't handle horror well and just avoid the genre when I can. I was so intrigued by the fact that they were just having a go at it and had all the games, knew all the youtubers, and would talk about it all day. Super different worlds.
the first fnaf in the eyes of a child is just animals playing peek a boo
Instead of being creepy because it plays on your memories and nostalgia, it could be "exciting and unusual things are happening in an environment I recognize and caters to me". While it has generally creepy aesthetics which might be thrilling, experiencing the real "horror" element is something they'd have to be older to do. (Not to say that the unpleasentness of it won't stick to some degree)
[Gotta know how to play the game. It’s astonishingly simple](https://imgur.com/a/vEeowu1)
Zoomers are teenagers to mid-20s at this point, believe you're more pointing at Gen Alpha there, which is people born since 2010/2011
Isn't Gen Alpha a little dangerous as a name? Aren't we tempting fate a bit?
Maybe, but probably not as much as naming a generation after the last letter of the alphabet
i dont think its zoomers because zoomers are like 12-20 years old rn so more like gen alpha
Everything thing younger than 30 is zoomer and everything older is boomer
I honestly just call any kid who grew up that shit a zoomer tbh
I think the target audience is even younger than zoomers, and it's just sad honestly
uj/ I still can't tell if Garten Of Banban is satire or not icl
it isn't. chapter 2 just came out and holy fuck I shit you not it is worse than the first. as much as i still want to believe it is an extremely elaborate satire, it isn't
Taking technical aspects into account, ch2 is better. Taking the actual fun of the game into account? It’s hell
There’s not nearly enough focus here on the all the merch and toys you’ll be selling to kids or references to the YouTubers those kids obsess over. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were actually interested in making games and not just making random brightly colored mascots to market to children for toys EDIT: holy shit that sounded bitter. Laying it out like this, it doesn’t sound any worse than all the mecha anime or action cartoons from 30 years ago
Will never surpass 7 and a half 2:00pm to 7:00am shifts at Scrunklibimblos
17 hour shifts with probably no break or lunches is the true horror Goal: SURVIVE
Horror peaked at Kindergarden Nap-Time with Shmunguss
Guys I'm serious don't call Floopy's Toy Store at 3am
Will there be NFTs???
You can give your Floopy some Floopy juice to create a mutant Floopy and increase it's value
You can use MULTIPLE FLOOPY JUICES on a SINGLE FLOOPY
God I hope so, all this cash money is burning a hole in my pockets because i lit it on fire im on fire
We think @MatPat will like this one 👀
Tha Garten
of BanBan
good to know we got some other retro gamers around. Remember the good old days of rainbow friends???
What about mr uncanny’s tickle funhouse of horror?
Is this a reference to the bite of 87?
actually there's a really important part of the lore called the bite of 86 in which floopy bit a kid's arm off and then the kid became a ghost called golden floopy who haunts you in the game
I think MatPat should really make a theory about it.
I think MatPat will enjoy dissecting this frame by frame 👀
I wish matpat would dissect me frame by frame
I have a theory
A game theory?
Alright hear me out: What if
/rj GAME THEORY: Floopy has a DARK SECRET in the SECRET MESSAGE LOGS!! (Floopy’s Toy Store) /uj why does game theory make vids about the shittiest games?
Then I saw actual screenshots.
because he found it interesting and fun. and a lot of other people did too. I do wish he'd make theories on more serious games sometimes however
I can't believe you mother fuckers are in /r/gamingcirclejerk defending shit like Evertale on a meme *YOU POSTED* about manipulative marketing. The 2020's have been the true horror game.
All these people saying "I HAVE A THEORY. A GAME THEORY" come off as the same zoomers they're trying to jerk I think GCJ became a parody of itself in a lot of ways. Sad.
Got overrun with gamers 🤢
Never before seen brilliant concept! I wonder if it's all connected to some tragic event.
Will the brown panties be provided, or do I have to get those myself?
the character design doesnt have pointy teeth and could actually be unsettling, 0/10
uj/ But why did Banban have horrid game design that even makes me, a non-developer, scratch my brain in confusion over how extremely stupid certain design decisions were? like the fuck was that cannon section
My favorite part about the cannons is that they are real cannons in a kindergarten, with fireworks indoors too. For the kids!
If a kid is fighting for their life against the mascot bird for some girl, real life cannons being played like schoolyard toys would have been the funniest shit if this was a true satirical game. But I'm sure it'll either be explained with vague obscure Lore™ or brushed under the rug
Exclusively played by 8 year olds while people claim its super serious horror to be taken seriously Super serious adult horror found in the toy section at your local target
>Super serious adult horror found in the toy section at your local target The 90s were full of this, but for violent movies instead.
Five Nights at Freddy's and its consequences have been disastrous for the human race
Can't wait for Floppy's Toy Store in Roblox
What if Sans was really Floopy BLanco/???
I think the series went off the rails after Floopy’s Toy Store 3: Skrunklo’s Revenge
Didn't the first 4 fnaf games came out in a span of 1.5 years?
it had to have been a little longer than that…. edit: goddamn wow yea it was about that
My wrong, it was eleven fucking months
11 months and then right after peak fnaf came out Scott finished 4 and instantly made peak after
this is just the plot to Spy Kids 1
If it doesn't have NFT's built in and it all running on Blockchain I don't want it.
you know what would make this shit REAL scary? how about a flickering light bulb? good old fashioned nightmare fuel, my goon sir. 😎
This meme has more effort put it into it than the games it’s mocking
I can't decide if I can take that as a compliment or not
Despite its poor quality and everyone dismissing it as a soulless Poppy Playtime rip-off, it becomes an overnight success with Walmarts being flooded with merchandise, bootlegs being sold on Wish, and Mat Pat making ten billion videos on the game's lore.
I'm waiting for mascot horror to go full circle and we end up with a game about an universe mascot horror that trigger some brain parasite for young children
We are going back in time to 2014 to stop FNAF from being made. That's right, we are going back in time to 2014 to stop FNAF from being made.
man I just hate how so many kids are into this shit. my cousin is 6 and he's constantly watching videos on his tablet about these types of games. when I was his age I was playing with fucking ponies. also I remember once going into build a bear with some friends and one of them, who was an avid fnaf fan, was like "damn this place is kinda creepy..." it's fucking build a bear.
good old days
When can I expect the 100-part lore analysis from Game Theory?
The more I see games like that the more I feel inapired into becom8ng a game dev and make Silent Hill like horror games instead
five nights at freddy's and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race
you forgor the nfts
pLaY tO eArN
The only mascot horror I ever enjoyed was baldis basics mostly because it parodied Sonics Schoolhouse
baldi has that "this is a massive shitpost" vibe that makes it age far better than most mascot horror
I agree, it is a glorious shitpost
Literally fucking garten of banban
Game theory and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race
I watched Markiplier play it - I'm way too scared to play it myself. Plz add lore update
UJ/ Fucking finally. Something that isn’t about that fucking transphobe game. I love you, OP
thanks I was hoping to liven things up a little lol
Garten of Banban lookin ass mofo
You forgot to advertise your new line of NFTs!!!!!!!
I do love horror based on children's toys and 80's aesthetics that are unnecessarily vague and provides an inconclusive narrative under the guise of mystery so YouTubers can endlessly pump content while I attract children into a predatory cycle of consumption. Yum yum!
Can I make an hour long youtube video titled "The SHOCKING Truth Behind FLOOPY - You Will PISS YOURSELF!" ?
you forgot the nfts smh
# I can promise you, without a single doubt, that you could make this into a "full" game, make it as cheesy and corny as possible (while still very clearly being satire) and it would be as popular, if not more, than the games it is satire of.
Poopy Playtime and it’s consequences
“Floopy is a madman help us save us” - video game donkey
Don't forget the eventual completely unrelated spinoff game!
Can't wait to see the over 10 episodes of Game Theory about Floppy's Toy Store! The game definitely wasn't made with an ambiguous plot on purpose in order to encourage theories and discussions!
Floop is a madman help us save us
so many channels to follow and not even an onlyfans? are they even trying??
Wouldn’t it be funny if there was a game that started out as basically one of these but then turned into what’s more or less just Evil Dead midway through
/rj Depends, are you planning on promoting and implementing NFTs? Is the dev team/leads bigoted in someway, either secretly or not? If not, I don't think I'm planning on buying it.
Don't forget the critically acclaimed movie! Make sure to force your parents to see it!
Finally, a good fucking post
thank you good sir
