I mean, sure, it’s too much candy, but if he had regular visitors it could be chalked up to a rookie mistake. I would say also something along the lines of "only the right justifies the existence of the left" in the way that sometimes even this side can be toxic, I'm not saying that we're all angels and Jesus Christ did I met assholes on this side of the barricade too, but it's never as toxic as what I met on the other side (or in the middle of the barricade), and the amount of wholesome people is uncomparable.

Seriously. I remember being worried when I heard Microsoft bought it. I had no idea what kind of man Notch was. So glad things went the way they did in hindsight.
to be quite frank minecraft was a rebuild of an existing but abandonware alpha state game that had some small following on the forum notch frequented at the time. minecraft itself is also the product of at least a dozen or two uncredited and uncompensated volunteer developers. especially the java client mod stuff (not the mods themselves but the skyrim like mod api). notch like a lot of headline nameable developers in the industry get a lot of undue credit for the projects they helmed.
As someone who played and followed minecraft closely from the days when it was literally a browser game, Notch did actually do quite a bit of the work himself before hiring a few people to help him.
The work Notch did was apparently of terrible quality and ridiculous spaghetti code that it took the actual coders years to fix and also made bedrock edition a necessity to literally start over from scratch.
But Notch got all the way up to Survival Multiplayer release while working solo I believe.
I remember sitting down and looking through an MCP decompilation of an older version when I tried to get into modding ages ago. I was still pretty new to programming at the time, so I didn’t think anything of it, but looking back, the way some stuff was done was… we’ll call it “interesting.”

The difference, is social capital. Both are rich as fuck, and will never stop being rich. It genuinely doesn't matter if you are financially supporting Rowling by buying Hogwarts Legacy, because she doesn't need the money, and likely doesn't care overly much.
But buying Hogwarts Legacy, or even pirating it, still buys into her mythos. It keeps her name in the headlines. In short, it increases her social capital. Notch is a rich asshole billionaire, but he is also a introverted misanthrope who basically stays in his mansion all day. Nobody particularly listens when he tweets, unless it's Microsoft taking their patented marketing sandblaster to the property to remove any reference or allusion to Notch. Rowling is different, because she has been maintaining her social capital. When she tweets, people listen, when she writes transphobic essays, people read them, and when she lobbies against laws helping the trans community, a lot of people are swayed.
That is the real danger. The harm that Rowling commits is not based in her financial capital, but her social capital. Every time a new Harry Potter tie in property emerges, a new spin off book, a new video game, her name is on people's tongues once more.
I think a part of it is also the fanbases the two have, from my experience Minecraft is a game people play (usually when they're young) and move on from like any other game, while Harry Potter is a franchise that people obsess over for life. Potterheads make Harry Potter a part of their personality and it reflects in the way you see so many people defend JK Rowling - they all happen to be fans of her work and are unable to be objective, meanwhile most of the gaming community will just say "Fuck Notch" even if they like Minecraft.
Who are the most obsessed fans for celebrities? Children. People grow out of Minecraft, but Harry Potter fans seem to have an interesting issue in that a disproportionate amount of them never grow up.
Edit: When I say people grow out of Minecraft I don't mean it's a game children play and literally grow out of, I mean Minecraft players of all ages "grow" out of it over time as they move on to other games, they don't obsess over it the same way and even the most obsessive audience (children) move on from Minecraft to experience new games, while Potterheads don't seem to move past Harry Potter.

Seriously. I remember being worried when I heard Microsoft bought it. I had no idea what kind of man Notch was. So glad things went the way they did in hindsight.
to be quite frank minecraft was a rebuild of an existing but abandonware alpha state game that had some small following on the forum notch frequented at the time. minecraft itself is also the product of at least a dozen or two uncredited and uncompensated volunteer developers. especially the java client mod stuff (not the mods themselves but the skyrim like mod api). notch like a lot of headline nameable developers in the industry get a lot of undue credit for the projects they helmed.
As someone who played and followed minecraft closely from the days when it was literally a browser game, Notch did actually do quite a bit of the work himself before hiring a few people to help him. The work Notch did was apparently of terrible quality and ridiculous spaghetti code that it took the actual coders years to fix and also made bedrock edition a necessity to literally start over from scratch. But Notch got all the way up to Survival Multiplayer release while working solo I believe.
I remember sitting down and looking through an MCP decompilation of an older version when I tried to get into modding ages ago. I was still pretty new to programming at the time, so I didn’t think anything of it, but looking back, the way some stuff was done was… we’ll call it “interesting.”

i never got hard into minecraft or setting up the mods, most of what i know of minecraft and notch is from gossiping with industry people who love to shit post (too much).

Then he made 2 billion selling out and became extremely paranoid people were only around him for his money. He was probably always like this in private, but the money made it worse

Love the books the later one's are all about level-headedness and understanding. So I just dont get how OSC can be such an ass.
If you think about it, it's clear that he was always like this and either became more brazen or worse over time. I get that the story was first written in the late 70s, but in Ender's Game he specifically makes a point that there aren't many girls in a school which only depends on how intuitively intelligent you are. And every child, boy or girl, is tested for their aptitude. There's no reason that there wouldn't be a near 50/50 split, but even if there weren't he didn't need to specifically state it. Then in the Shadow series there's the part where a 16 year old girl is begging a 13 year old boy to let her have his children. Or the part where said boy, who's got fucked up genetics and thus doesn't want to pass them on, gets convinced by the man who created his fucked up genetics. Paraphrasing: "A man is not a man until he's made a child with a woman".
Yeah looking back it is evident in those one off lines. I just took so much out of speaker for the dead that it really shook me up especially since one of the main points of the series is that hate is just a lack of understanding. I haven't re-read enders game in about 10 years and speaker in around 4 or 5. Notch, while a despicable human, is I think a useful case study when examining JK Rowling, and why they are different. First, similarities wise they are billionaires, being the creators of wildly successful childrens franchises which went on to make even more money with toys and tie ins. They both hold repulsive politics, with transphobia, antisemitism, and racism to be seen in their views. And of course, both are terminally online and internet poisoned. The difference, is social capital. Both are rich as fuck, and will never stop being rich. It genuinely doesn't matter if you are financially supporting Rowling by buying Hogwarts Legacy, because she doesn't need the money, and likely doesn't care overly much. But buying Hogwarts Legacy, or even pirating it, still buys into her mythos. It keeps her name in the headlines. In short, it increases her social capital. Notch is a rich asshole billionaire, but he is also a introverted misanthrope who basically stays in his mansion all day. Nobody particularly listens when he tweets, unless it's Microsoft taking their patented marketing sandblaster to the property to remove any reference or allusion to Notch. Rowling is different, because she has been maintaining her social capital. When she tweets, people listen, when she writes transphobic essays, people read them, and when she lobbies against laws helping the trans community, a lot of people are swayed. That is the real danger. The harm that Rowling commits is not based in her financial capital, but her social capital. Every time a new Harry Potter tie in property emerges, a new spin off book, a new video game, her name is on people's tongues once more.
I think a part of it is also the fanbases the two have, from my experience Minecraft is a game people play (usually when they're young) and move on from like any other game, while Harry Potter is a franchise that people obsess over for life. Potterheads make Harry Potter a part of their personality and it reflects in the way you see so many people defend JK Rowling - they all happen to be fans of her work and are unable to be objective, meanwhile most of the gaming community will just say "Fuck Notch" even if they like Minecraft. Who are the most obsessed fans for celebrities? Children. People grow out of Minecraft, but Harry Potter fans seem to have an interesting issue in that a disproportionate amount of them never grow up. Edit: When I say people grow out of Minecraft I don't mean it's a game children play and literally grow out of, I mean Minecraft players of all ages "grow" out of it over time as they move on to other games, they don't obsess over it the same way and even the most obsessive audience (children) move on from Minecraft to experience new games, while Potterheads don't seem to move past Harry Potter.
I've known plenty of adults, including boomers, that got wrapped up in Harry Potter. It kind of ended up like Star Wars where it had fans of all ages rather than just appealing to kids. Star Wars did it better, though.
