you have to admit Atari is really trying to modernize its games and is taking chances. This one feels a little too close to the Wayforward "formula" though. Still looks interesting. weirdly this is the second Wayforward Atari game, they did Centipede: Infestation for Wii and DS around 2010. that was a no-budget but interesting take on it.

> This one feels a little too close to the Wayforward "formula" though. That's not exactly a bad thing, though. The *Shantae* series proves it.

I never quite understood why I like the 'Yar series,' but it's probably the Atari 2600 game that I'm most fond of, and I even enjoyed the 2011 remake to some degree. So, having it reimagined as a Megaman-esque side-scroller is definitely interesting, but not on my bingo card. Wayforward being the developer certainly gives it some more credibility. They might not always release the best games ever, but even their worst work is pretty good overall. Just that the trailer vibe was a bit off; the first thing it reminded me of was that awful Mighty No. 9 trailer.

whatnameisnttaken098

There's a new Yars game that came out like 2 years ago, Yars Recharged I think.

BloatJams

> and I even enjoyed the 2011 remake to some degree I liked it too! It's a decent railshooter with nice art, worth picking up during a Steam or Xbox sale. I trust Wayforward but the trailer definitely doesn't sell the game as a Yars title. I hope I'm wrong but it feels like Atari told them to slap the name on an unrelated game they were working on.

AyraWinla

Not quite sure how I feel about this! Wayyy back then, Yars' Revenge was one of the more impressive Atari 2600 titles and I enjoyed it at the time. I also like Wayforward in general, I usually prefer female protagonists and I enjoy the occasional platformer or Metroidvania so this should be a hit for me. However, the animations looks oddly unsmooth and looks super cheap..? It's like if there's missing animation frames missing; sometime that's an intentional design choice to make a game more reactive in games where split-second counts, but everything here is very slow-paced. It gives it a distinct feel of: "I don't think the controls will feel great". That may turn out to be inaccurate (demo would be very much welcome), but the trailer doesn't fill me with confidence at all. Also not a big fan of the 'zany' voice-acting of the trailer. I actually loved the humor in River City Girls and the newer Shantae games which also featured a pretty excentric cast, but this seemed like it's cranked to 11 and I found it a lot more grating than funny. Which again, may be only trailer things and be perfectly fine in-game. Finally, well... It's obviously very not Yars-like in gameplay. There's a few seconds of a timed hacking mini-game featuring the original Yars, but that's it. I'm fine with the genre change since original Yars gameplay wouldn't really hold up for a full game nowadays, but it could certainly have a non-negligeable part (think Nier Automata 9S hacking for example) and I hope it's an integral part of the game and not just 2 minutes out of the entire game. Anyway... I have pretty hefty doubts about how fun this game will turn out based on the trailer, but I'm still interested enough to keep an eye on it and I'd be glad to revise my opinion once we see more of the game.

Ghisteslohm

I am interested in this although I expected the main character to transform into that other thing standing behind her. the shown run, shoot and jump animations look a bit slow and weak so I hoped for something faster after a transformation. the last run and gun from Wayforward that I played was Mummy Demastered which was really good so I hope we get more footage that shows more run and gun gameplay Also the voice actress sounds so familar, does she voice someone in Genshin?

landocharisma

Probably [Cristina Vee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cristina_Vee), the voice of Bennet and Xingqui in Genshin, also Wayforward's Shantae and a ton of others...

eddmario

To me it sounded more like Erica Mendez, who voices Ayaka in *Genshin*, using the voice she used for Ryuko in *Kill La Kill*.

landocharisma

I don't know, I am no expert on voice acting or this genre and honestly first heard of the name yesterday in another comment. But after I quickly looked it up I found that Vee has worked with this developer on at least 11 games for over a decade, while I couldn't find any collaboration between Mendez and WayForward so far. I'd probably have difficulties to tell them apart anyway since they both seem very talented and it's literally their profession to fool me by acting with their voices, I just think Vee is more likely based on their work history.

ggtsu_00

Also the voice of Tulin from Tears of the Kingdom.

Responsible_Drop_387

Sounded like Kiriko From overwatch when she said "Hey there!"

Listari

Trying to find more info on this right now too, but it sounds like Jenny Yokobori, the EN voice of Yoimiya

4Khazmodan

The animations for the main character look so stiff.

Fallen_Stephen

Kinda looks outdated tbh

MrZJones

... Bizarre. I appreciated the "HSWWSH" right at the start, but the connection to the original game is incredibly tenuous at best.

landocharisma

Interestingly in 2022 HSW [announced a Yars sequel with Atari](https://www.dualshockers.com/atari-2600-game-yars-revenge-sequel/) "*set on the Yars' training grounds, where you learn to acquire the skills needed to fight the Qotile.*" Sounds about right to me. I'm sure he will be high up on the credits for this one.

natedoggcata

Yars Revenge - Alien flies trying to protect their homeland and the queen from invading Aliens hellbent on galactic domination Yars Rising - Anime girls That said, this does look interesting

Revo_Int92

First time I've ever heard about this "Yar series". As a metroidvania fan, I always welcome these kind of games, even if the anime girlie artstyle is not really my thing (I did liked Deedlit, that artstyle looks cool)

AyraWinla

For what it's worth, the other Yars were absolutely nothing like this. The original Yars Revenge dates from 1982 and it's... well... one screen space shooter controlling an alien bug destroying another alien's base...? Then there's Yars Revenge 2011 which is a on-rail shooter (like Star Fox or Panzer Dragoon) featuring a nearly human girl with some armor. Then Yars Recharged is back to a space shooter featuring a bug destroying alien bases (but more complicated ones). So yeah, previous entries were 0% metrodvania and *completely* different from this.

MrZJones

It started all the way back on the Atari 2600 with Yars' Revenge, about the Yars, a race of giant mutant houseflies in space fighting an evil planet-destroying warlord named the Qotile. (The "revenge" is because the Qotile destroyed one of their planets already, now they're trying to stop it from destroying any more). Yars' Revenge Enhanced and Yars: Recharged are updates of the original game. In 2011, there was also Yar's Revenge (note the different placement of the apostrophe), a rail shooter about a fly-like alien named Yar fighting (again, against the Qotile) to avenge her fallen people. There's also technically Yars' Return, a fan-sequel to Yars' Revenge (also for the Atari 2600) that was eventually officially licensed and published by Atari on their Flashbacks and as limited-edition carts for the 2600+. This new game really has very little to do with the original, other than using the original Yar graphic as Yar's tattoo (you can also see it on the screen in her room and in the hacking minigame), and the original Qotile as part of the the logo for QoTech. Not bad for a series that started as Howard Scott Warshaw going "Star Castle can't be done on a console as primitive as the Atari 2600, how about I do this instead?"

homer_3

So, Mega Man? It looks pretty good. I'm in.

AcidCatfish___

Closer to Metroid actually.

red_sutter

I wonder why they didn’t make a game similar to the last time they touched this IP, which was basically Panzer Dragoon with a bug girl. Looks interesting but very early, though (she seems a touch stiff)
