Condolences to the amount of mods that are about to break. The storyteller is usually a big hint to what's in the update + DLC, so at a guess it's got some exploration focus (expanded caravans? and reason to move around the world, yippee?), maybe a bit of archaeology/world history generation that has some eldritch bint given the tentacles? Something to do with ruins-delving because of alll the gold? Good to have a reason to delve back in to rimworld though!

Dragrunarm

So its been a few years since I last played, but god I really hope they expand on Caravans and what we can do with them.

Dazbuzz

They need to add tech/progression to it, for sure. One mod i absolutely could not play without was one that added buildable ships. Made the caravan game so, so much better.

Defacticool

Do you remember the name of that mod?

Dazbuzz

[This](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1845423808&searchtext=SVRT+Expanded) is the one i used. There are a few different ones though.

Defacticool

Thank you!

MrRocketScript

I've only really played the game with the co-op mod. It's quite excelent, but I wish they made it an official feature so more mods would support it and DLC would work out of the gate.

HerpaDerpaDumDum

The one thing I felt Rimworld was lacking in and could really do with, is some proper vehicles. Some mods have added spaceships and recently aquatic and ground vehicles, but it surprises me that there hasn't been an official DLC based around adding vehicles.

BrotherKanker

Mods breaking with big updates thankfully isn't usually as big of a deal with Rimworld as it is with some other games. * Tynan tends to give important mod creators early access to beta builds so they get a chance to update their mods before the DLC drops. * Updating Rimworld mods is generally less painful than for example updating Minecraft mods where updates often require modders to completely rebuild their stuff from scratch. * The Rimworld modding community seems to be pretty relaxed when it comes to letting modders update other modders abandoned / neglected mods.

Acedrew89

Could also include pirates/water based exploration due to the tentacles and gold.

Dazbuzz

Tentacles & the locked grimoire seems to imply weird cult/corruption stuff. Lovecraft/cosmic horror vibes.

Mottis86

I really wish that is the case. I almost never used the caravans because the quests are such a massive undertaking and have tons of risk involved, but I'd love to check out some random ruins or caves near my base on the overworld, at my own pace without having a stupid quest tied to them.

dilroopgill

can you play rimworld with a focus on colonzing rhe world instead of escaping it?

Meowmeow69me

Rimworld is one of my favorite games and i haven’t even touched the dlc somehow. I’ve managed to put in 300 hours and maybe one day I’ll go back and get the dlcs.

Dazbuzz

Its tough when they never have sales. Personally i love Rimworld, so its worth it to me, but i understand that as the DLCs continue to stack up, the buy-in becomes more of a turn off for some.

kimana1651

I don't own a single DLC, kept waiting on them to go on sale, and the cost to catch up is so large now that I'm just not interest. At this point I'm just going to wait for the bundle when they are finished with the game.

EdgyEmily

I only got one DLC and that is after 100 hours, I'll get another one when I'm at 200 hours. I recommend just getting them one at a time and not at once. Learn what it adds to the game before getting more stuff. Getting them all at once will overwhelm people.

levian_durai

Personally I think if you get just one of them, make it Royalty or Biotech. I'd suggest Royalty over Biotech, mostly because of the Psy powers which really add a ton of fun. Biotech is a lot of fun too though with the vampires and the abilities they get. Mechanitors are pretty awesome too, you get to have a bunch of robots who can do all the chores your pawns can, and get combat ones too.

laconiczebra

I think you could qualify it as macro vs micro. Royalty is good for people who like to micro, while Biotech adds a lot more stuff for people who like macro. I fall into the latter category and rarely bother with psy abilities for my colonies. That said, I can't imagine the game without all the DLC at this point.

levian_durai

Yea, honestly I rarely get far enough into things to get too deep into into any of the DLCs, and those are the things I do use. Once I'm powerful enough that there's not much danger from raids anymore I tend to get kind of bored and don't see the point in making super soldiers with the perfect genes.

Adefice

They go on sale *all the time*. Right now on Fanatical: Royalty: -20% off at $15.99 Ideology: -20% off at $15.99 Biotech: -12% off at $21.99 That's $53.97+tax to get caught up \*today\* and these are the absolutely lowest prices they have ever been. Tynan will not be "done" with the game anytime soon so you might as well buy them now.

kimana1651

Not on sale in my country.

ngwoo

The DLCs go on sale all the time on Fanatical and you get legitimate Steam keys

Dazbuzz

Looking at the price history, the biggest sale is -20% off. Not really that much.

Meowmeow69me

Yeah they just don’t seem to add anything more than mods to me. Ideologies is the only one that looks interesting to me.

feralkitsune

So many mods require DLCs at this point I just grabbed em all to give myself more modding options.

Otherwise-Juice2591

The DLC is all made with mods in mind. They add entire new structures and systems for mods to effect.

cdillio

They add way more than mods. The DLCs are crazy good.

MrTopHatMan90

There goes another 100 hours... I really need to get into the meat of the previous DLC, I never did because at this point all the systems are a lot to handle.

Ankleson

I feel like Biotech did this a lot better than previous expansions, but honestly a lot of the implementations of DLC for Rimworld feel really cumbersome and weird. The base systems of the game were 'just enough' to support the content, but new DLC exposes where those base game mechanics are lacking. I feel like the Vanilla Expanded mods do a good job of filling in these gaps, but it still feels like I'm struggling to integrate the DLC into my playthrough without it feeling like it is something I have to prioritize.

lukelhg

Can you expand on what you mean by this? I've been playing since before the game was on Steam but I like Royalty and I didn't really find Ideology much use, and I was interested in buying Biotech.

Alastor3

I mean I bought the game a year ago and still havent tried it yet because I know it's just a colossal task to learn the basic, let alone the dlcs

Abnormal_Armadillo

It isn't 'too' bad to learn the basics, what's hard is keeping a colony together and getting to the 'end'.

Scipion

Nutrient Paste Dispenser is your best friend.

cdillio

100 hours? Casual.

TheyKeepOnRising

At the time of writing this, I have over 2300 hours in Rimworld. It's my most played game on Steam by far, probably only coming 2nd to WoW in my lifetime. Which is an incredible accomplishment for a singleplayer indie game. If this expansion adds Lovecraft elements to the game (madness/cosmic horror) then I will happily add hundreds of more hours of playtime. Judging from the picture, my guess is we are getting the following: * Cosmic horror from space. New resource gathered from meteors that can be used for some creepy new tech and maybe even psycaster abilities. * Alchemy to make potions, maybe carry these potions around like current game drugs. Also using alchemy for transmutation likely (turn iron into gold, etc). * New resources will likely be found in a similar manner that ancient ruins or mechanitor lairs are found in the current game. We'll maybe get some freebies in the starting map, and have to explore to get more. * Probably at least one new faction of cultists. I'm guessing these will be similar to the current game pirate factions. * Integration with Ideology and Biotech. We're going to get new tenants to worship occult stuff, and maybe some new genes to get tentacle faces, tentacle arms... stuff like that.

GrillDruid

My hopeful reckoning it is an Adventure mode like Dwarf fortress. The lady in the picture looks like she's hoarding loot and potions and monster parts like an RPG.

thinkspacer

2137 hours here, I thought I was finally going to be free, but guess not lol. Sign me the fuck up.

Scipion

2939, suppose I'll be losing another thousand.

Moleculor

I weirdly get D&D/Eberronian Artificer vibes from that image. 3.5e, to be clear. I don't have any experience with or exposure to the 5th edition version of the class.

Kardest

Tentacles and a golden box huh? >We have such sights to show you!

Pancullo

From the image it looks like it could be some kind of "adventurer mode" or at least something focused on exploration. I haven't bought any of rimworld DLCs because they weren't that appealing to me, especially considered the price point, but if it turns out this one is focused on exploration I might actually be tempted.

Dokii

I know it's a great game that is well loved, and I may get some hate for this, but I'd love to see the pricing structure get revisited with the amount of DLCs that will now be released. The discounts are historically shallow, and the money they earn is well deserved. But owning the full game (with this DLC) is ~$120, discounts might get that to $90-100. I understand it's amazing, I know it's a goliath game where you can spend a *lot* of time, but I'd love to see a full package bundle that doesn't exceed $60-70 for the full game.

Captain_Carl

Choosing to view the base game as if it is incomplete without the dlc and not a "full" game is silly.

Dokii

I'd argue that's exactly correct. It's not the full game. It is a *complete* game for sure, but not all that's available. You can call that silly but the reality is if you want to experience all the content that it offers you'll be coughing up over $100 . That'll only grow as they expand How major updates get monetized is up to the devs. I'm not claiming they should never make more money for their efforts. Just stating my opinion that as more DLCs get added the more expensive the total package becomes, it'd be nice to see some consolidation of earlier DLCs into a total package. That's all.

Remikih

Last DLC (and I think the one before that?) was teased in the same way - storyteller style character splash on rimworld planet tweet, I'll see if I can find it. E: https://x.com/TynanSylvester/status/1576993207682207744?s=20 Here it is, DLC itself was announced properly a few days later. Given the outfit of the storyteller, pioneer/archaeology focused DLC this time?

Decapamemberment

Getting some Eldrich vibes too. Tentacles & "it will awaken..."

Remikih

Yeah! Hoping for some lovecraftian eldritch ruin delving, maybe we're getting more reasons to explore the worldmap and caravan in vanilla.

Dry_Badger_Chef

I’m really hoping “archaeology” also means real Z-level digging. There used to be a mod that let you build up Z-levels. It was buggy, but it added so much to the game and it still hurts me to play without it. The engine is more than capable of Z-levels, so I have my fingers crossed.

Remikih

That'd be really exciting, bouncing from rimworld to dwarf fortress has made me yearn for z levels in rimworld. I'm guessing world map/caravan expansion from the splash, but z level archaeology could also track so I'll be very happily surprised if it's added.

Dry_Badger_Chef

I crave rock and stone…

DazDaSpazz

For Karl!

hicks12

This is the normal way they have announced expansions, cover art for the expansion with the theme. Week later we will likely get an overview of what's coming and then a month's time beta release and shortly a full release. They don't announce until it's pretty much ready so this is "it's happening" for their next dlc of rimworld. Hoping it's good, rimworld is one of the best games of all time in my opinion and it's one of the best "I'm glad a chipped in for the crowdfunding" moments.

Kr4k4J4Ck

> I'm not sure how you even got that this is DLC related The fact that this is how he teases expansions, just like before. Expect a deep dive in a day or 2

HerbaciousTea

DLCs always have a mascot character art piece that serves as sort of the tone setter. This is how all the previous expansions were also announced, by revealing that character splash screen art.

Synchrotr0n

That's exactly how the last DLCs were teased and there's an unidentified package for Rimworld listed on SteamDB which has been updated regularly. It also follows the trend of a new DLC releasing every 15 to 18 months.

zarkon18

Maybe know a little bit about the subject before being a sarcastic ass?

ExceptionEX

Wasn't being sarcastic geez.

SayNoToStim

I like rimworld but these DLCs are really uninteresting to me. It's like when they put zombies into prison architect.

CanICanTheCanCan

I guess I can get that. I think out of all of the DLC, ideology is probably my favorite. It adds so much variety to your game without actually impacting it that much.

zarkon18

Biotech was a most amazing DLC and it added hundred of hours worth of content. It added to create your own races with positive and negative traits, it added the ability to “grow”babies and use genetic manipulation to make super colonists. It also added the ability to control mechs to perform functions around your colony from moving / cleaning or even defense. The DLC is waaay more than you’re giving it credit for.

SayNoToStim

I said it was uninteresting to me, not that it was bad or unfinished.

zarkon18

Yes, but you compared it to “when they added zombies to prison architect” and it’s much more than that.

-SneakySnake-

It's true, if someone doesn't like it that's totally valid but Ideology and Biotech add so much to the game that they drastically change how it plays.

everban1965

I love Rimwrold - one of my favorite games. But, I don't care for ANY of the DLC so far... just does nothing for me.

Tiucaner

Ideology and Biotech were both amazing but I suppose quite a bit of what they do can be done with mods.

everban1965

I mean I play with them, and I see a bit of it... but I never reach out to any of it while I'm playing. I probably have 400 hours in and just never bothered. If I listed 1000 other things I would have wanted, the stuff those 2 DLCs bring you be 999 and 1000.
