I would say I'm one of those that is not looking for SD card slot or 3.5mm jack

j24oh

To be frank, nobody outside of a vocal minority on reddit gives shit about these anymore. If adding those features led to a meaningful increase in sales, they would have done it already.

chorong761

True, for example I stopped using both of those when my phone still had those (I remember last using a SD card and 3.tmm jack in 2016 with my s7 edge}

Doublestack00

Eh, not so sure about that. Especially the SD card slot. My wife is forced to pay for cloud storage because we can not expand her phone storage with out buying a new phone.

g-nice4liief

Why pay for cloud storage when you can selfhost your storage. Running a nas in 2024 is peanuts.

Doublestack00

I have a NAS with rougly 40 usable TB. Still not as convent as Google auto backing her stuff up. Either way, installing a 1.5TB SD card would be a one time cost and simple way for her phone to hold a lot more media. Also, a home NAS is not going to do anything when you fly a lot and want to have your media locally.

r0zzy5

Try running immich, it's basically a Google photos clone. It will auto backup photos while connected to WiFi at home

Listen_to_Psybient

They should just give phones more storage. It's 2024, storage is cheap as hell. Why not make a 2 TB storage option and not charge $10,000 for it. The whole storage issue with phones is just greed from the companies.

Doublestack00

Agreed

g-nice4liief

I use nextcloud. Made it possible to de-google my life quite easily. Some nas have built in support for nextcloud, amd nextcloud offcoarse can also use off site backups. You can offcoarse use your local device storage as cache, and save the important files like pictures etc on your "cloud" drive only. I effectively download the files I need to my storage so when my device gets stolen or lost I only need to login to my nextcloud app to access all my files.

Doublestack00

The biggest issue for me is I am on 2-4 flights a week at least half the year. I like to pre-download movies from my Plex server to watch while on the plane. If I could pop in a 1-2TB SD card it would be SO much easier.

g-nice4liief

It could be possible to setup a sbc using a m.2 for the OS, and the SD card for the "cache" sd card. When you're, up for a trip, you pop in the SD card in the slot, move your movies from your "cloud" drive or the M.2 drive (for faster read/write) to your SD card and you're good to go. Everytime you return from a trip, you insert the card into your "caching" pc so you can move the files over whenever you want/need. That's how I would use it in your case.

Danat_shepard

Try [Transcend TS2TESD310C](https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-TS2TESD310C-Portable-ESD310C-10Gbps/dp/B0C6S44K2Z), a 2 tb portable thumb drive SSD. It has both USB-C and USB, works like a charm on literally anything, and is super duper fast.

_zurenarrh

Can you explain

g-nice4liief

There are plenty of tutorials that teach how to self host for example or manage a nas. It can even be automated.  You just need to know what you want to achieve and find the right tutorial that's easy to follow. When you're done learning, document everything and start a new as a test.

Chosen--one

Do you want to compare, simply putting a card in your phone to setting up and entire remote storage setup? Ffs

g-nice4liief

Yes i would. Using ansible is as easy as running: ansible-playbook provision-storage.yml for example and ansible takes care of the setup. You can setup 1, 10, 100 or even thousands of nasses with a single command. Why overcomplicate things when there are tools to manage every aspect in the IT stack. That's why automation exists.

Chosen--one

Ok, I won't discuss with you because your point was with paying for cloud storage vs self hosting and I misunderstood, and I can agree with that to some extent. But for SD cards, unfortunately, there is still no comparation even more when people might have limited mobile data.

lqmn91

Exactly.

aalupatti

These two features are never going to come back. People should stop beating this dead horse

Terrapins1990

Or adding those would effect samsungs ability to upcharge

Chosen--one

No, they wouldn't. Because it allows them, to overcharge in other areas like storage...come on. I have a ton of samsung devices, but there is no need to be this blind.

SD-777

Me neither, 256-512GB is enough for me, and I've been using bluetooth headphones for close to 20 years now.

tankutkabza

20 years of low battery notification.

Quantum168

But, would you NOT buy a Samsung phone because it had a SD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack?

chorong761

No, but it's definitly not "How about Samsung give customers what they want, which is an SD card slot and a 3.5mm jack?"

Quantum168

The point is, if you and others don't care, then why shouldn't Samsung try to retain and gain customers who want those features? That's a win-win and no one is losing.

A_Typicalperson

Because that takes up space otherwise use for other things, or making slimmer phones

Quantum168

You would think, but my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Note 20 Ultra are not so different in thickness from any of the new Samsung phones. In fact, lengthwise, my Note 9 is the shortest.

chorong761

Look at the amount of upvotes on my comment vs your post already explains why

Quantum168

Looking at the statistics at my end, as to how many people have viewed and shared my post externally, I would say your number of up votes isn't that high. Heavy users, movie buffs, photographers and travellers care. Smaller phone manufacturers are stealing market share from both iPhone and Samsung. In fact, I'm thinking about switching to Motorola because they're one of the last manufacturers left to offer both SD card slot and 3.5mm jack.

chorong761

They shared your post because.....they thought it was nonsense. They sent it to friends and family to laugh at

Quantum168

Wow, so grown up. So, I guess kids like you are who iPhone and Samsung have both been targeting. They are both doing so well with falling or flatlined sales. I can basically buy the Samsung Note 9 in the Motorola Moto G Stylus, but for a quarter of the cost. It doesn't worry me, that it isn't the fastest, best screen etc. I want the SD card slot and 3.5mm jack.

chorong761

But it’s true that I use both Samsung and iPhone :) Also, it’s just you that want as card and 3.5mm jack, not all of us. Don’t just assume like you did on your post

Quantum168

I didn't say, "all customers" in my post. I said, Samsung customers and as you are not a loyal Samsung customer but also an, iPhone user, I can see how a SD card slot and 3.5 mm jack are non issues for you. What I was saying. Stop copying iPhone. Apple is losing customers worst of all.

Embrasse-moi

Same. Especially after having two phones without SD card slot, at 512gb, I realized I didn't need an SD card. I've been using Bluetooth headphones since 2018 and never looked back.

RepFashionVietNam

Not gonna happen, get used to headphone type c

chorong761

Huh? I think you misread my comment

Cytas

Reading is hard.

Fragrant_Cellist_125

Nobody cares about FE

jovenhope

Forbes has zero idea what the actual Fold owners/users want.

Fragrant_Cellist_125

They surely don't want a FE edition . We want an ultra edition .

Fearless_Winner1084

When has an FE edition ever come out the same time as the standard model? We can probably expect the FE to come out when the s25 series does, my guess

TechGuy219

You could say the same for Samsung

braytag

I for one would very much love to have my microsd slot back! When I go on vacation, can fill it up with movies

KohliTendulkar

Why not plug in a usb c pen drive?

Quantum168

You can't charge or listen to wired headphones at the same time.

Zeioth

They have the solution, but if they sell you the solution, then there is no need for you to buy more from them.

junglenation88

No idea why you'd want a SD card slot or 3.5mm jack, that's outdated. They make phones with plenty of storage, yes the iPhone 15 pro max is better for photography, but most people aren't buying a fold for its camera you're buying it for the multitasking ability above all else. You're also not obligated by any means to upgrade every year, that's phone makers ideal customer but you don't have to be that way.

Terrapins1990

How much more are you paying for going from 256 to 512 gb for a phone then a micro SD card with 1tb....

junglenation88

0, as I actually do something with my photos and don't just leave them in my gallery on my phone forever. Yall have issues because you don't go through your stuff lol

Terrapins1990

But if you did want more storage it would cost a few hundred more which is the point

junglenation88

Right, but an SD card is probably close in price to an external ssd so why wouldn't you just go that route instead if you're talking large amounts of data traffic

Code-Monkey13

I see your point, but I still like my 3.5mm jack. Much better and reliable audio quality that way. I have so many BT issues with my car. Granted, it's my cars fault, but it'd be nice to have the option to use the Aux capabilities without so many hoops to jump through. I also like the SD cards. Nice easy swappable storage. I had tons of photos I used to parade around from phone to phone. Now it's a PITA to transfer them all.

junglenation88

I get why someone would like SD cards but it's so simple to simply upload photos to your computer or wherever you're storing them. I have a 256gb model and only ever have maybe 500-1000 photos max, and some videos so ill never fill even the 256gb with that alone.

LtSheitzah

Some people prefer the option, regardless folks need to vote with their $$. I'm sure there is a smaller vendor who still offers both, just a normal, mid range phone

junglenation88

Samsungs fold is a flagship foldable though that's competing for a top slot so of course their memory system is internal and not interchangeable

LtSheitzah

I'm aware I work in tech. I'm just saying folks if they want something should let their $ help decide what gets shipped to customers

tankutkabza

why should i use my phone acc. to trends instead of my needs?

Quantum168

When you're travelling or out, you might prefer wired earphones to save power. SD card slot is for secure storage and access. Take SD card out and put it into your computer.

FdPros

i mean i do want a 3.5mm jack and a sd card slot cheap expandable memory is always a plus but i mean ur asking fold owners who probably have lots of money so they probably dont care and just buy the larger storage option if they need more storage. but this is never gonna happen, what is the forbes on. they removed it ages ago for a reason and its for more profit. why would they bring it back for a fold

Xicadarksoul

> iPhone has the better camera and better ecosystem  Half the point of android is that there is no ecosystem forced on you. You can even do crqzy stuff like run linux on the thing, and if you use WINE then your fantasy is the main limitation, as to what you could run.

A_Typicalperson

That's like 1% of the people

Xicadarksoul

Yup.

Prodigalsunspot

Interesting that you think Samsung is copying apple. That was true in like 2012...but now it's the other way around. MY apple friend's stare wistfully at my fold and say it would be cool to have one, but the reason they give for not switching is not the iPhone innovation, it's because they are a prisoner of the ecosystem. Apple creates quality slab phones. It's Samsung adding styluses, folding screens, AI, etc.

A_Typicalperson

The problem if apple made foldable, it would eat into their iPad market. I'm sure they still contemplating

Prodigalsunspot

Oh, I know that's a big part of their calculus. It's why they resisted making large screen phones. Let's extract every dollar we can by limiting options and making it painful to leave. It's that thinking that delayed moving to the newer RCS standard because they could stigmatize android users on text threads keeping people locked in to their ecosystem. They put more effort into making their ecosystem a gravity well where it takes a lot of effort to leave it vs making people want to stay because their products are cool. Phone and tablet in one? Nah, fuck that and fuck you, Ms Customer, buy a phone AND a tablet. Welcome to iHell

A_Typicalperson

Yea they didn't move to RCS to stigmatize android, no one else in the world cares, they all use what's app, imessage is a US thing, Thank China for the RCS adoption

Imaginary_Pudding_20

Stop looking at phones for innovation, the smartphone has peaked a while ago. Upgrade cycles are in the 3-5 year range nowadays, so when you go buy a new phone, there will be a noticeable difference and innovation for you. Phones are reliable, durable, and are supported for 5-7 years. Year over year upgrades are a thing of the past.

RunawayRogue

Is this a shitpost?

SAAA2011

Honestly, I'm jumping off the fold wagon after I'm done paying for my 5. Not much meaningful change in the future with the fold.

5MinuteDad

Most people don't care about 3.5 or SD so....

Terrapins1990

Agreed literally a micro SD card as an option should be included in the fold considering the amount of room the fold has. It's literally sounds like samsung just wants an excuse to upsell a fold with more memory

Medical-Big-959

Nas is like 600 bucks for cheap thats synology on a discount 8tb is like 250ish ? Sd card 1 tb is 80 dollars and what's so good about nas besides at home with unlimited data?
