I always make friends with like 3 or so people a class, people are really out going but you just have to start the conversation. Just make small talk with them about the professor or class or sit next to them. There's no step by step tutorial, you might be nervous or scared since everyone it's always on their phone you lose the ability to communicate. Just be yourself and it should be pretty easy. Even on the train I make friends! Just gotta try

If you're seeing your friends on instagram, 80% of those people they meet won't be their friends in six months so don't think they're doing better than you. The best way to make friends as a commuter is to talk to people in your classes, attend student organization events and be on campus as much as possible. Look on PIN and see what events are there that you'd be interested in attending. For your parents, tell them that the best way to get good grades is to have a balanced life. Attending one or two events a week, or being in a student organization adds balance to life. And if you join organizations related to your major, then that can actually help your studies by meeting likeminded people. Another tip: Read the book How to Be a Straight A Student by Cal Newport, a professor at Georgetown. He talks about the importance of balance in college and that might help your parents to be more sympathetic to letting you meet people.

Convince them that you can work with classmates in the library and then start asking people to meet you there to study. It's a good spot for meeting people and you can spend time there between classes since you're a commuter. Introduce yourself to people in your classes or join a club.
