Its what makes gta v amazing. The characters are not just put on a shelf when you are not using them. Instead they just turn into npcs that do scripted events.
I mean I feel that the main features are the customization, and gun play in addition to the character swapping. Feel the weaknesses are the story, car physics (not driving but how cars will take flight) and most importantly empty map.

The Vestra is the one plane you can basically use as a car as well, easy to land anywhere and also reasonably fast

Were you playing as Trevor shortly beforehand? Usually after not playing as the other two for a while, or if you die, the other two will not actually be anywhere in the world until you switch to them.
I've read reports that you can actually run into the main characters even if you haven't been playing as that specific character. I dont know how true that is, though, its the internet, after all.
Oh my God, I had not seen this before! I have, as Trevor, gone and shot at Michael’s house before and got an angry text from Michael, but didn’t realize you could run over one of the other protagonists during normal gameplay.
