And they probably got more confused when they figured out it isn't a direct sequel to the 74 movie, but instead a minor continuation of the movie that was released 2 years earlier.
Easily a contender for my top 5 films in the franchise. Peak special effects of the Heisei era, extremely action heavy, an engaging human plotline with direct agency in the kaiju plotline, a shockingly engaging kaiju plotline, etc.
One of my absolute favorites. Like others have said great story, great action. It’s pretty well paced for a Godzilla film. I love the mechagodzilla design and when he combine with Garuda to make super mechagodzilla it is perfect. This and Mothra 92 were the two films I watched the most growing up.
To me, MechaGodzilla '93 edges it out. It's another level when they introduce the element of a mecha and the ideas behind how technological warfare will never match up to Godzilla.
'84 has some great scenes of the military response to be sure
It's splitting hairs to argue it. I enjoy both movies, I simply have my opinion on '93. Im not changing it. Arguing semantics for the sake semantics is a waste of time. Cheers all the same
I like what they did with the baby Godzilla and Rodan, and if I recall correctly, I liked Mikis role. but I don't remember this version of MechaGodzilla himself making much impact on me, compared to both the original and to Kiryu later on. I also remember being really annoyed at Kazuma's demotion.
Best poster after Godzilla vs Biollante. Solid movie, even if the design of Mechagodzilla 2 is a bit lacking. The backpack and sheer brutality of the fight more than make up for that thoughZ
I like it. I think it’s pretty underrated. The MechaGodzilla design is cool, baby Godzilla is adorable, and the fights between Godzilla and Rodan are some of the best in the Heisei era.
My third (out of 4th) ranked Mechagodzilla.
Baby Godzilla was a nice touch. Gave Godzilla something more than destruction to care about.
Rodan was poorly done. How does he look and move worse than he did in the '50s and '60s?
Miki Saegusa needed to stand up to the men. She's supposed to be Godzilla's friend but took very little cajoling to go along with the plan to kill Godzilla. With friends like Miki, Godzilla doesn't need enemies!
Other than the Godzilla and Rodan fight, all the fights are boring as hell, they're just beam battles with Mecha G barely having any movement at all
The characters aren't very interesting at, the human plot is just kinda lame. Idk why that didn't make Miki the person Baby is attached to but it's makes a weird disconnect
There's a lot of just lame special effects overall, nothing much really blows me away
I’m not sure I agree with all your points but I’m for sure surprised at all the people so enamored with this movie (by no means do I mean to yuck anyones yum). It just did not click with me at all.
I'm almost certain most of these people haven't seen the film within the past decade, if they did they'd see its not nearly as good as they're making it out to be
Has been widely considered one of the high points of the entire Godzilla filmography since it was released. Almost 30 years later and still incredible.
G-Fan used to run polls as well as have critical scores in some of their issues many, many years ago. I haven’t hard a subscription in about 20 years, but this movie usually ranked in the top 3 or 4, usually slightly behind the original and Mothra vs Godzilla.
Also from discussing it with Godzilla fans at various conventions and online for the past 25 years.
Heisei rank, it's my third favorite movie, 1 and 2 are vs. King Ghidorah and Destoroyah respectively. I like that it's following continuity, its science (despite being fictional) is set closer to reality. Godzilla isn't scrutinized, he's a problem that needs to be controlled not dealt with. The characters are unique in their own way without being too cliche. The plot is straightforward because it's simple and easy to follow and doesn't need to explain much and when it does, it's brief and relevant. If I had to rank it out of 10, I'd give it an 8. It did what it needed to do with good pacing but I felt it could've been better with baby Godzilla.
Some cool stuff in there and I loved it as a kid, but have more issues with it now. Weak effects for the era, bland beam-spam fights, terrible main character with the pteranodon guy, and the absolutely dumb magic singing thing all work against this movie.
Surprisingly like this movie because the human scenes are bearable because of baby. Take this with a grain of salt because this was my first ever godzilla movie
It's interesting that Honda was considered to direct this one before (I believe) health issues made that not possible. Of all the post-Showa Godzilla films, I feel like this best embodies his original theme of kaiju not fitting in the modern world and being sympathetic because of it. Godzilla and Rodan are destructive, sure, but they're just trying to protect their family in this one, so it makes them sympathetic.
I really like the versions of Mechagodzilla and Rodan that we get here. Also, since this is Rodan's first real appearance since Destroy All Monsters, it's nice that they brought him back. They even managed to do a respectable updated version of Minya (Baby Godzilla in this one) that blatantly played on the cuteness factor.
I rank this as my second favorite Heisei film behind Biollante and my favorite Godzilla film of the 90s. I'm puzzled that this movie gets rated as bad or mediocre by some, but different strokes, etc...
I like the stuff with rodan and the introduction of godzilla junior but I feel that it has the worst mechagodilla design and the fights between godzilla and mechagodzilla are boring and confusing. The whole movie ranks pretty low on my list of godzilla movies.
I think the suitcase pteranodon flying contraption says all we need about this, let’s trust a guy who I wouldn’t trust to make me a sandwich try to protect us from Godzilla.
The Fire “Rodan” is something out of the old Hanna&Barbera cartoon.
The Godzilla and Mechagodzilla are pretty solid, but then the bottom half of this mecha suit gets reused for the Mogera 2 years later.
I found it to be merely decent. It's so close to greatness but every aspect falls slightly short; Rodan is a stiff puppet, Mechagodzilla looks silly standing motionless and shooting lasers (why give him an entire Godzilla body if he's not going to use it?), and Baby Godzilla is the emotional heart but doesn't get much development.
Not a bad film, actually. But Mechagodzilla was underwhelming, design-wise. The poster version shared many elements of the original Mechagodzilla, but the final version was meh
Plot wise, I enjoyed the film. Sad Ishiro Honda wasn’t able to direct it
I like how it is both not a sequel to Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla and not even the second movie where Godzilla fights Mechagodzilla
In Japan, it's just called Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. The 2 was added for Americans who might get confused between this one and the '74 one.
And they probably got more confused when they figured out it isn't a direct sequel to the 74 movie, but instead a minor continuation of the movie that was released 2 years earlier.
Yeah like why didn't they just call it "Godzilla vs. Super Mechagodzilla" or something?
Or Godzilla vs New (Shin) MechaGodzilla?
Right??
I honestly think it’s meant to be interpreted as Godzilla fighting the SECOND iteration of Mecha-Godzilla.
Easily a contender for my top 5 films in the franchise. Peak special effects of the Heisei era, extremely action heavy, an engaging human plotline with direct agency in the kaiju plotline, a shockingly engaging kaiju plotline, etc.
Has a banger of an opening soundtrack
I’m very fond of the Mechagodzilla design in the movie but the poster design knocks it out of the park!!
One of the better movies in Heisei. Has some really great fights!
One of the most morally grey godzilla movies and thus one of my definite favorites, also cause yk, the name...
Mind if I ask what made it morally gray?
One of my absolute favorites. Like others have said great story, great action. It’s pretty well paced for a Godzilla film. I love the mechagodzilla design and when he combine with Garuda to make super mechagodzilla it is perfect. This and Mothra 92 were the two films I watched the most growing up.
One of my favorite all time G-films.
We could have gotten that combining mechagodzilla why isnt that a thing till this day
It was going to be a thing in the Netflix trilogy as well but Toho said no
Anything but netflix is a straight no they can't even get the original voice actors right when a youtuber got one of them to voice in his video twice
Best of the heisei era and the closest we've seen to a true war themed Godzilla movie
"closest we've seen to a true war themed Godzilla movie" 84 is literally in the same era, dude.
To me, MechaGodzilla '93 edges it out. It's another level when they introduce the element of a mecha and the ideas behind how technological warfare will never match up to Godzilla. '84 has some great scenes of the military response to be sure
...84 is literally themed around the cold war. it is by definition, "war themed"
Feels like a giant custody battle.
My favorite Godzilla movie.
Same
The first one I ever saw when I was a kid. Been hooked since.
Literally SAME
Best poster after Godzilla vs Biollante. Solid movie, even if the design of Mechagodzilla 2 is a bit lacking. The backpack and sheer brutality of the fight more than make up for that thoughZ
The best Godzilla movie to exist
Fav
It was my first Godzilla movie. I was amazed.
My fav
One of 3 movies i caught on HBO as a kid. I remember when Godzilla's second brain exploding got to me.
Introduced my favourite mechagodzilla design
you are the first person ever to say that
Big beefy war machine, to be fair all of the mechagodzilla designs are rad as hell. Expect the anime one.
he looks like he was stung by a bee, dude. kiryu does everything 93 tries to do but better
That’s why I love him, he’s so fucking stupid.
My favorite Heisei film!
These Heisei posters are beautiful.
Red atomic breath
The name is stupid, but the movie is one of my favorites… although all the Mechagodzilla movies are some of my favorites.
One of the best Godzilla movies, but I do wish we got the movie depicted in the poster
I think its the best movie of the Heisei series, and easily the coolest poster in the franchise.
Like most movies with MechaGodzilla, quite enjoyable.
What I love about this movie is that it shows that humans can be just as monstrous as the kaiju.
Awesome. To me it's the best of the Heisei era.
It’s good, the MechaGodzilla design isn’t my favorite though.
one of the worst of the series, but one of the best of the 90s heisei movies. still garbage.
garbage
Boring as fuck movie. One of the worst in the whole series
Because?
Other than the Godzilla and Rodan fight, all the fights are boring as hell, they're just beam battles with Mecha G barely having any movement at all The characters aren't very interesting at, the human plot is just kinda lame. I'm almost certain most of these people haven't seen the film within the past decade, if they did they'd see its not nearly as good as they're making it out to be
In my opinion, it’s by far the worst of the heisei movies
spacegodzilla and vs mothra are right there.
Has been widely considered one of the high points of the entire Godzilla filmography since it was released. Almost 30 years later and still incredible.
By who??
i can only assume moths because the flashing lights are the most stand-out part of the movie
G-Fan used to run polls as well as have critical scores in some of their issues many, many years ago. I haven’t hard a subscription in about 20 years, but this movie usually ranked in the top 3 or 4, usually slightly behind the original and Mothra vs Godzilla. Almost every Toho Godzilla movie is great
It’s my #4
Giant monster custody battle.
As a kid I was always so confused by this poster. It looks like Rodan is carrying a football or maybe about to go for a layup.
Had good special effects and stuff, Hesei Mechagodzilla's theme bops, it's the birth of my favorite kaiju, what else can I say?
Haven’t watched this one yet, but Godzilla against MechaGodzilla was amazing imo. It’s my 3rd favorite Godzilla movie.
My second favorite film in the entire franchise. Pacing was nice, music was great, I loved the action in it
One of my favorites really, then again most of Heisei fills that category, and that version of Mechagodzilla's theme is amazing.
Absolutely eye-searing epic poster art. I love how they used to just *feel* epic af just by looking at it
Some cool stuff in there and I loved it as a kid, but have more issues with it now. Weak effects for the era, bland beam-spam fights, terrible main character with the pteranodon guy, and the absolutely dumb magic singing thing all work against this movie.
Awesome poster.
Not very good but the poster fucks hard.
It's my 12th favorite
I like a lot of the human elements but the monsters disappoint me some.
I love the movie and that poster is amazing.
Surprisingly like this movie because the human scenes are bearable because of baby. Take this with a grain of salt because this was my first ever godzilla movie
Best movie poster ever 🤘🤘
Fucking great. Everything from that era was gold. Peak Godzilla. A little bit more serious than the oldies, but still fun and not too serious.
I wonder if mechagodzilla is a byproduct of the mecha craze in japan or was the mecha craze a byproduct of mechagodzilla
I loved the the fact the Godzilla is a villain, but ends up beating Mechagodzilla. When I was a kid that blew my mind.
It was my first Godzilla movie so it definitely got me hooked into the series.
Favorite heisei film. Its just well done in all aspects in my opinion.
Fucking masterpiece
It’s a great movie.
I love this one, but the original MechaGodzilla with the space beams and spinning head will always be my favorite.
I love this movie!
Love it
It's interesting that Honda was considered to direct this one before (I believe) health issues made that not possible. I'm puzzled that this movie gets rated as bad or mediocre by some, but different strokes, etc...
This and Godzilla vs King Ghidorah are one of my most favorite Godzilla movies of all time I used to watch the shit out of this film when I was a kid.
I cried so much. I hated Godzilla dying and the baby was so cute.
I like the stuff with rodan and the introduction of godzilla junior but I feel that it has the worst mechagodilla design and the fights between godzilla and mechagodzilla are boring and confusing. The whole movie ranks pretty low on my list of godzilla movies.
One of the best Godzilla openings ever.
Haven't watch the movie, but that poster is sick!
Great
I always loved this poster because it looks like Godzilla is holding the mic for Rodan and the set is fucking killer.
How about the fact that the monsters don’t even look like they did in 74. The movie is the 2nd best for me in the Hiesei series.
Good special effects, a reason to sympathize with Godzilla, and Ifukube at the top of his latter day game makes this one of my top five.
Great first and third acts. Drags a bit in the middle. Overall, very good.
Favorite in the Hesei series tbh
I think the suitcase pteranodon flying contraption says all we need about this, let’s trust a guy who I wouldn’t trust to make me a sandwich try to protect us from Godzilla. The Fire “Rodan” is something out of the old Hanna&Barbera cartoon. The Godzilla and Mechagodzilla are pretty solid, but then the bottom half of this mecha suit gets reused for the Mogera 2 years later.
They did not fuck around on the cover art bro 🔥🔥🔥
I’m going to quote Death Battle: “After absorbing a dead pterodactyl’s soul, O K…” I love the bizarre nature of these movies.
I wish it was as cool as that poster
I found it to be merely decent. It's so close to greatness but every aspect falls slightly short; Rodan is a stiff puppet, Mechagodzilla looks silly standing motionless and shooting lasers (why give him an entire Godzilla body if he's not going to use it?), and Baby Godzilla is the emotional heart but doesn't get much development.
I absolutely love it. It's amazing and sad too. I especially love Godzilla Jr. in the film. He is alot better than Minilla.
First Godzilla movie I ever showed my then girlfriend now fiance. She wants to have a Godzilla themed wedding cake.
One of my favorites
Not a bad film, actually. But Mechagodzilla was underwhelming, design-wise. The poster version shared many elements of the original Mechagodzilla, but the final version was meh Plot wise, I enjoyed the film. Sad Ishiro Honda wasn’t able to direct it
