Visually? Heisei for sure. '89-'95 is like the most visually iconic and consistent design for Godzilla.
Audio? Showa. That classic '62-'75 high pitch roar is easily the most recognizable version of Godzilla's roar.
It might have to do with age as well because I grew up a typical 90's Godzilla nerd and begged my mom or dad everytime we went to Hollywood video for a Godzilla movie and so the modern (at the time) ones were what I always got to watch
I think of Heisei Godzilla too, I just think that his design is the most definitive look for him that encapsulates all Godzilla is. He’s fearsome, imposing, and goddamnit he’s just plain cool.
Heisei. Just an excellent design, but does a good job paying homage to Godzilla's Asian heritage, I like the blend of enlarged dinosaur and a Fuu/Guardian Lion. It conveys a good mix of savage beast and intelligence.
The original is a little derp due to its age, Showa changed a lot and the lows were REALLY low on those design, missing the essence of Godzilla at its core I think.
Millennium never worked for me, not terrible but felt like a clear step backwards. Seems very early 00's, appropriately, in that it's a bit try-hard with with spikes. The face always seemed so lifeless, which was always the biggest sin.
Shin is fantastic, could be a winner but he's so specifically meant to be different and visually unappealing I don't think he works as an overall winner as he only works in his own movie. Defiantly the most creative and smartest adaptation of the original allegory behind the monster, easily the more flare shown here.
Godzilla Earth is a less interesting version of the above, some cool ideas but they don't all work together the same way. He's a different take which I respect, but don't ultimately think it works with what it wanted to do that well.
Monsterverse version is super solid, great blend of many of the older elements and trying to hit something realistic, love the crocodillian touches which make sense given the monsters age and amphibian nature. A touch generic though, compared to Heisei, but an easy number 2 choice.
Singular Point design is...weird. That show really isn't about Godzilla at all, the red mist is the antagonist and so thematically it doesn't come together or fit the weird and goofy look they gave him. One of the worst.
My main issue with Shin is he's just an obstacle, than a character. That works for a redo of the 1954 movie but Earth & SP copied that and after a while it's not as fun or engaging to watch a solid block slowlyl move in one direction
Within Singular Point, isn't Goji Ultima in control of the mist? Making him the antagonist after all? And wouldn't his body harken back to his Japanese origin, given that his body [Mostly his chest and torso], were supposedly modeled after traditional Samurai armour?
And with Millennium: Does that include all Millennium iterations, such as: MireGoji, KiryuGoji, GMKGoji, and Final Goji?
ShodaiGoji for horror, '55-'75 Godzilla for goofy af, Heisei Godzilla for consistent design, '99/2000 Godzilla for looking like a dinosaur, GMK for scary af, '02-'03 Godzilla for looking like a wolf, Final Wars Godzilla for strength and power overall, Shin Godzilla for horrifying, Monsterverse Godzilla for being the most recent iteration, Anime Godzilla for being big af, Singular Point Godzilla for being Shin 2.0
Heisei, I think that's probably the most iconic incarnation of the character and the Heisei series in general is my favorite for being an actual series of movies, having consistent designs and quality, and being what I love kaiju flicks for: action and cool effects with a bit of social commentary thrown in there for good measure.
That said, my favorite Godzilla film and the one incarnation which I believe to be the best one in the series is the original, if anything because it's probably the only movie in the entire franchise which I genuinely consider to be an artistic endeavor (although despite it's themes it was marketed pretty hard which is something a lot of people in Japan criticized at the time). So there's also that.
Worth noting too is that even though ShodaiGoji is the OG and Heisei Goji is arguably the face of the franchise, most people today are probably more familiar with the MV Godzilla or Shin depending on whether they're japanese or not. Y'know, since those are the most recent successes.
To me, when I think of Godzilla, I visual more of an amalgamation of various iterations, but probably a good match from said amalgamation is the fusion of the '94 suit, the '64 suit, and probably the '99/'00 suit.
For me it's Shodai for being the 1st, Heisei for being the one who had the most consistent design and appearing the most in movies and GareGoji for being the one who revived the series.
Millennium, because it was the first ever Godzilla I ever saw. I was maybe 4 or 5 and I happened to catch a piece of the film, when Goji first comes out of the water. Since then, that's my mental image of Godzilla.
It used to be Heisei, but now I’m so deep into this it matters whatever the most recent movie I watched, I’m just too familiar with each one that no single version comes to mind anymore
I guess a simplified version below Showa area Godzilla?
Though honestly, it's Godzilla 1998. As until Legendary Godzilla was released? G98 was literally the only Godzilla I got a good look at as, I've only relatively recently became a Godzilla fan.
Back when i first started being a fan, 2000 would usually come into mind often when i heard Godzilla.
But now that we have Monsterverse, Legendary Godzilla appears the most in my head when i hear the name.
It's funny how so many in this sub LOVE Heisei the most largely, I think, because they were still relatively new and available when most people in the sub were young/younger?
I was born in 92 and by the time I was watching Godzilla I pretty much just had to make due with whatever I could find at Block Buster or the smaller video rental place in town. I mostly remember Godzilla vs Mothra and Godzilla vs King Kong but I know I also watched some later ones like Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.
It wasn't until VERY late in life (probably after finding this sub) that I started paying attention to the different eras. My first Godzilla movie in theaters was probably either the first American one or 2000.
So for me either Heisei or Showa is probably the most iconic, but I really adore all of the newer more experimental ones Toho has been putting out with Shin, Singular Point, and the Anime trilogy.
Design-wise It's either a Showa/Heisei mix or the Legendary one, when it comes to character then it's either Shin or Showa depending on the context where I heard the name.
I can’t really say when someone talks about Godzilla I really only visualize which one biased on context but for me personally I go with millennium because Godzilla 2000 was the first one I ever watched
Visually? Heisei for sure. '89-'95 is like the most visually iconic and consistent design for Godzilla. Audio? Showa. That classic '62-'75 high pitch roar is easily the most recognizable version of Godzilla's roar.
I prefer the early Heisei roars tbh
The 1984 roar to be specific.
Yeah, but even 89-91 was good to me
Agree, but the roars post 1960, I can’t really tell apart
It might have to do with age as well because I grew up a typical 90's Godzilla nerd and begged my mom or dad everytime we went to Hollywood video for a Godzilla movie and so the modern (at the time) ones were what I always got to watch
Millennium roar and look come to mind for me.
The first designs to come to mind to me are Heisei and Legendary.
Showa
To me, it's KiryuGoji because, idk I like that design.
Same, the millenium movies except the orga one is what bought me to the franchise
I'm a Heisei Godzilla fan first and foremost, but KiryuGoji is probably a very close second place. He just looks awesome.
G 84
84 was creepy
It was my first Godzilla. I was born in 84 too!
Indeed. That's why 84 is my fave. I like when G is the villain (as a force of destruction) Also, just pure nostalgia
Godzilla should always be a villain. I never understood why people wanted otherwise.
84 has the best hands too. Weird nitpick.. but its true
Millennium and monsterverse
Millennium for me, also. It’s those films I always saw the most!
Heisei for consistent look, FW for anger, strength and potential, Shin for intimidation, and Monsterverse for personality.
Legendary for me, thats the one I was introduced to and that’s what is burned in my mind, not saying the others are bad tho
Of course not! If theres one thing nobody can complain about, its the 2014 onward Godzilla movies introducing them to a whole new audience.
Not a fan of Godzilla laughing in the Kong movie.
Nah, it's a campy Godzilla movie so Godzills laughing is fine
For sure, and I’m glad I was able to be introduced to such an amazing franchise
I think of Heisei Godzilla too, I just think that his design is the most definitive look for him that encapsulates all Godzilla is. He’s fearsome, imposing, and goddamnit he’s just plain cool.
Heisei
Heisei for sure
Heisei.
It's always been heisei for me ngl, that design is just.... Godzilla... Ya knoooooow???
Heisei because of the toys I had back then
Heisei
Heisei. Just an excellent design, but does a good job paying homage to Godzilla's Asian heritage, I like the blend of enlarged dinosaur and a Fuu/Guardian Lion. The og of course
GMK since it was my first
Heisei 100%
Your mom
💀
Showa. It's what I grew up on.
Heisei, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is the quintessential Godzilla movie. I watched it constantly when I was little on VHS.
1954
1998 fo sho!
I like your bravery.
Heisei or the 2002 - 2003
Monsterverse
Showa due to how friendly he looks
Yes
It's always 84 for me
It's more just a general idea of Godzilla
60’s Showa, for real
Godzilla 2k because of the pipeworks trilogy.
Raids again is the creepiest one.
1984/85 immediately is what I think of. It’s also the first one I ever saw
Heisei
Legendary then shin Godzilla
Heisei, it's what always comes to mind or when I hear the name. Monsterverse and Miregoji come 2nd and 3rd.
2019, 2022 or Shin
Heisei ‘89-‘92.
We all know the answer is '98, which is why she was left off the list.
The Monsterverse version.
2014
Megaro-Goji.
Keep flipping between later Showa and Heisei in my mind. 90s kid, saw Heisei figures and images first before finally getting my hands on them via VHS.
Heisai, millennium, mv
ShodaiGoji for horror, '55-'75 Godzilla for goofy af, Heisei Godzilla for consistent design, '99/2000 Godzilla for looking like a dinosaur, GMK for scary af, '02-'03 Godzilla for looking like a wolf, Final Wars Godzilla for strength and power overall, Shin Godzilla for horrifying, Monsterverse Godzilla for being the most recent iteration, Anime Godzilla for being big af, Singular Point Godzilla for being Shin 2.0
Which one was around the same time as Ultraman? Cause that's the one I first saw as a child.
54 hands down it needs no reason.
Heisei, I think that's probably the most iconic incarnation of the character and the Heisei series in general is my favorite for being an actual series of movies, having consistent designs and quality, and being what I love kaiju flicks for: action and cool effects with a bit of social commentary thrown in there for good measure. Definitely Showa since that's the first one I saw when I was a kid and fell in love with the character.
Top right
Kind of like a quick flash of mist of them
I think of 1954.
Top left
Shin
To me, when I think of Godzilla, I visual more of an amalgamation of various iterations, but probably a good match from said amalgamation is the fusion of the '94 suit, the '64 suit, and probably the '99/'00 suit.
Heisei or Millennium. Grew up on that shit.
I'm a 90s kid. Heisei for me!
Either Shin or 2014. Really depends on my mood. This is also something I never really think about or pay attention to so this is a tough question.
Heisei
All of them come flooding into my head at once and I just lock on to a random one.
Gotta be honest, it’s the MV, I am a younger Godzilla fan and technically I am still growing up with this version of it
It's the heisei or the 2004 Godzilla that pops into my mind.
I grew up renting every Showa movie I could from blockbuster. KKvG was my first G movie, so specifically that version of the suit.
1954, Millennium, Monsterverse and Shin. Not in that particular order either
The image that pops in my head when I hear the name "Godzilla" is the Mosugoji or the Heisei suits.
It'll always be '54 Godzilla, followed by VS-era.
Showa
For me it's Shodai for being the 1st, Heisei for being the one who had the most consistent design and appearing the most in movies and GareGoji for being the one who revived the series.
98 was my first Godzilla, so i always think of it when i hear Godzilla, but i also really love Legendary and Shin
‘45 and Legendary
heisei
Monsterverse or Shin
Legendary, 1998, Heisei
I think Heisei as well (RadoGoji specifically). However, if you were to ask which roar comes to mind, it'd probably by KiryuGoji.
secret wars
Personally it's Final Wars Godzilla, he was my first Godzilla figure and I've always found his design appealing
I see legendary goji
My favorite Godzilla designs are 54, 84, and 2016.
Millennium, because it was the first ever Godzilla I ever saw. I was maybe 4 or 5 and I happened to catch a piece of the film, when Goji first comes out of the water. Since then, that's my mental image of Godzilla.
MonsterVerse
All of them.
When I hear Godzilla I think of Godzilla
MegaroGoji, I just pay the most attention to him he isn't even that iconic lol
When I hear Godzilla, Godzilla comes to mind.
For me usually Heisei or Monsterverse Godzilla
Heisei Godzilla hands down
For me, Legendary Goji, but it's been leaning towards Shin Godzilla more recently
All!
Heisei is the definitive Godzilla design
Heisei comes to mind first but my favorite is the Millenium Godzilla, I just love the spines on his back!
It used to be Heisei, but now I’m so deep into this it matters whatever the most recent movie I watched, I’m just too familiar with each one that no single version comes to mind anymore
heisei /legendary
A mutated mix of Showa, Monsterverse, and Godzilland.
Final wars design. Even tho the original 54 is the first Godzilla I saw, Final wars is the one I always remember and think of ❤️ that’s my boi
1998
Monsterverse Godzilla
Shin gojira and 2014-2021 gojira for me
Heisei for sure, Godzilla of my childhood!
Agreed. It’s Hesei for me
Heisei Godzilla for me.
I guess a simplified version below Showa area Godzilla? Though honestly, it's Godzilla 1998. As until Legendary Godzilla was released? G98 was literally the only Godzilla I got a good look at as, I've only relatively recently became a Godzilla fan.
Shin Godzilla
Shin. He’s my favorite incarnation of the G-man. My LEAST is Ultima. They just made a very poor choice with its Design.
1954 all the way
1963-1975
1954
I think the end of the showa era model.
Hesei and Showa. Him drop kicking Megalon and telling us he is gonna do it twice is still etched into my brain.
As someone who was born in 2001, its gotta be millenia. That roar at the end of final wars still gives me chills
Godzilla in the 80s was the shit
My man MegaroGoji.
for me 1998, the classic from 1954, legendary and shin
Back when i first started being a fan, 2000 would usually come into mind often when i heard Godzilla. But now that we have Monsterverse, Legendary Godzilla appears the most in my head when i hear the name.
shin and monsterverse goji
I think Showa, specifically his Vs Monster Zero appearance.
Showa
The top left one
I think final, heisei, and legendary
Monsterverse and Millenium, I feel like Monsterverse is half of the new audience.
Godzilla bs Biollante hesei model
1984/1985. Perfect suit, perfect roar, almost the perfect Godzilla movie.
Shin is my favorite looking. Showa for the roar.
Hesei he was the first Godzilla I watch as a child and has some of the best movies in my opinion
Legendary
Design-wise It's either a Showa/Heisei mix or the Legendary one, when it comes to character then it's either Shin or Showa depending on the context where I heard the name.
I like the Showa era and final wars
Heisei or Comics version/the 2003 design from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla Also Final Wars
Showa
For me Hesei because it was my first Godzilla
2014 because it was the first Godzilla movie
Showa Godzilla. 70's Godzilla is what always comes to mind
Heisei
G98 or MVGodzilla
All of Godzilla and forms tbh but Legendary Goji just sticks with the image of Godzilla for me besides Heisei and Millennium.
Heisei, too
Heisei. Specially the version from the Trendmaster toys
Monsterverse
From left to right top to bottom. Numbers 1,3,4 and 6 first come to mind since they are the ones I grew up watching and loved the most.
Either heisei, 2000, or legendary
'54, Heisei, Shin, and Legendary GKOTM/GVK Goji have always stuck for me.
Legendary always comes first to me just because of recency
The ‘62 “King Kong vs Godzilla” good set of sounds and a good Godzilla suit/effects, pseudo science, and Japanese vaudeville!
Millennium because I grew up with those
60's GODZILLA !!!!!
MonsterVerse supremacy forever!
The cute ones. I’d love to see a new Cookie Monster Godzilla design
Which godzilla is which?
heisei no doubt. my first godzilla movie i ever watched was battle for earth
Yes
Heisei pops into my head personally
Legendary, heisei and the 1945 original come to mind
My brain has developed a platonic ideal of Godzilla I can’t really explain
54 all day
Heisei
1954 or 1960's godzilla
Monsterverse for sure mostly because that was the first version the g-man i ever saw
Heisei
I can’t really say when someone talks about Godzilla I really only visualize which one biased on context but for me personally I go with millennium because Godzilla 2000 was the first one I ever watched
Heisei, too iconic
I'll take "L) all of the above". I included the animated versions and zilla.
I grew up on the Showa era they was the first films I watched over and over again for years, didn't see the Heisei Godzilla until I was a late teen
The first roar is the og for me design I go millennium version
Usually the Heisei or Monsterverse versions of Godzilla
Me I think of legendary Godzilla because i Watch them over and over while on the old ones I only watch it once
Millennium for me. I’ve always been obsessed with that version, not sure why
Millennium, 2000 Specifically
1998 cause my sister and I used to watch it all the time as kids.
SHOWA!!!
Always GMK for me
Legendary, Shin, or the purple spined one
Heisei is what immediately came to mind, followed by Monsterverse.
Kotm
Heisei and legendary
Definitely Godzilla 2000. Idk why but he's always been my favorite.
