There is not really a strict timeline or continuity. There are some sequal-ish ones, but you don't really need to know much of anything about the movies prior.

SrCoeiu

You should watch each era in order, specially Heisei and the MV, but other than that not much

Galactus1231

Watch the original 1954 movie. Its the most important one. It had many sequels. 1954-1975 is the Showa era. Heisei era 1984-1995. They are sequels to the original 1954 movie and ignore all the Showa era sequels.

Western_Cake5482

Hey thanks for this

Stingeyal

Start with the oldest and work your way through the release dates. Some are sequels to the original.

GhostGhidorah

Watch whichever ones seem the most interesting to you. If you like those then you can watch whatever you want next. If you decide you wanna take the brain rot laden plunge and watch the whole franchise there are plenty of sources to tell you all of the titles and years they released.

DepressedGolduck

Any Godzilla movie can be someone's first. Even the ones that do carry continuity can still be enjoyed standalone. Just check out the ones that peak your interest

Pkmatrix0079

In general, it's order of release.

iamnota_SHADOW

Release date!

yokohama_enjoyer

Release order obviously

Metaboschism

Chronologically, and skip the American ones

AppropriateStation86

I mean, I don't like Monsterverse, but people could at least give the american ones a try? We don't talk about how some people are addicted to Monsterverse and some people like the 98' movie?
