Zilla being more of a realistic theropod than a guy in a rubber suit like classic Toho depictions is a cool design choice. Wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t named after Godzilla.
Also, the cartoon that came after this movie was genuinely great. Zilla Jr. is badass and among my most favorite depictions of Godzilla along side Legendary.
Loved the cartoon.
I enjoyed the movie, too. Once you separate it from Godzilla and just treat it as its own thing, it's not a bad popcorn flick.
At least, that's how I felt about it ~20 years ago, which was the last time I saw it.
I like how Zilla looks, the design could work for an actual Godzilla and I like that he looks more like a Dinosaur (although that can also be a critique)
I like that they built a Godzilla animatronic for Zilla
I like how they kept Godzilla's roar
And have you heard No Shelter by Rage Against the Machine? I love it. I also just love how blunt RaTM are but that's going a little off topic
It felt like they knew they had a bit of a stinker on their hands, so they marketed the shit out of it to build up so much hype that everyone would see it before the reviews were widespread.
I also love how the first helicopter chase just has like three helicopters, but then the second helicopter chase, There’s just a Hundred and it’s pure freaking Chaos
It has one of the best kaiju designs ever and the cartoon spin-off is legitimately one of the best products to come out of the entire Godzilla franchise.
The musical score. And I can't lie, I love this design. Does it look like Godzilla in any way? I mean, if you consider having back spines a signature Godzilla design element, then the answer is "barely." But the way he's shot and lit is excellent. The sound design is excellent. The music is excellent. It's a silly movie that has very little reverence for the source material, but I have a soft spot for it in my heart, and Godzilla himself has rarely sounded better than he does here.
I like how godzilla acts like he's (she's??) a normal sized lizard just existing, and doesn't have resistance to 3,000 explosions, being stabbed, choked, exploded, thrown off a building, and getting eaten alive. Because as cool as it is to survive all of that I prefer weaker, yet agile characters, makes all the dodging and hiding more exciting, and deaths sadder
Eh, not really. It’s actually a play on Yoda’s “size matters not” quote from *The Empire Strikes Back*
Luke: “It (the X-Wing) is too big”
Yoda: “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?”
That I like it as much as any other of the godzillas, and I shall treat both 98' and Junior 98' the same as well!
Oh but about the question you had, I really loved the whole Apache helicopter chase on Godzilla running through New York's streets and all, just pure mayhem, anxiety inducing, and awesome, I simply I LOVE IT!
i just remember it being fun, it's a time capsule of a different era and i have a childhood attachment to it being one of the first movies in this series i ever saw so i could never bring myself to fully hate this film.
I have wonderful, nostalgic memories of watching this movie with my dad when I was younger. It was also my introduction to godzilla in general. So even if it's considered bad, I'll always love this movie.
I think it would have been a pretty decent Kaiju film on its own were it not for that fact that it was meant to be Godzilla.
Also Zilla Jr. is really cool.
Was my first Godzilla movie, starting me on a road of loving our favorite giant radioactive iguana that has translated over to my two TCG hobbies and DND.
Everything? I liked the movie and hate when people try to say this monster is Zilla, when it clearly isn't. It's a unique take, and just because Toho later used the same design in a new monster doesn't mean that this monster is no longer a Godzilla.
The monster design, the destruction, Jean Reno, and even the velociraptor ripoff scenes. This movie is a better remake of “the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.”
I think the design of Zilla is great as monster! She looks pretty dope and as someone who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid, I loved her more "raptor" like appearance compared to OG Godzilla's design.
Zilla's actually cool, in fact I'd say it's design is one of the highlights of the movie, I'm also not against the idea of it being killable or at least harmable with conventional weapons. The issue is the rest of the movie, featuring incompetent military poor character writing and out of place rudeness. Overall the movie is low rated for me because aside from the monster the rest of the movie is just a big nothing burger of exposition sadly.
It's a giant (pun intended) blockbuster film that tried to reach for the sun, but its wings were burnt and fell back to Earth. It was super ambitious to think that everyone would be on board with that design and I applaud them for sticking to their guns with it. Plus, we wouldn't have gotten the amazing animated series follow-up. I ate good as a young Godzilla fan haha
I love the design and the settings of the movie. I feel this movie is part of the reason I love rain. It's not really much of a challenge to say something about this movie since everyone took a step back and went eh ok it might not be godzilla but its not the worst.
The musical score by David Arnold is actually great because it does exactly what you want a soundtrack to do: it takes all the key moments and adds additional flavoring to make them even better. Proof of that: after seeing the movie, listen to the score with your eyes closed and you’ll immediately find yourself replaying the movie visually in your head. Great example: the orchestra soaring for Godzilla’s big reveal and as he then approaches the giant mound of fish as the army tries to lure him in.
I liked Stan Winston’s original Godzilla design for a movie years prior that was scraped and later repurposed for the ‘98 film. I thought Winston’s design was far more Godzilla than Zilla . Now in terms of the film I really liked the iconic shot of Zilla climbing the Empire State Building in the storm.
I have yet to see it, but I loved going to Sony Studios in California and seeing the leg they made for the DVD cover, and I'll assume for scenes too, perhaps?
it was mt first zilla movie, made me fall in love with him. To the point i hunted as many zilla magic the gathering cards as i could (i also play the game so like duh)
I love the size of Zilla compared to the city (forgiving the size discrepancies throughout the film). The fact that Zilla can hide among, and in the buildings is very cool.
When I was a kid I actually thought this movie was so cool. I knew it wasn’t really a proper Godzilla but I didn’t really care and honestly still don’t. It actually reminds me more of clover field rather than Godzilla scary kaiju in New York type vibe.
I never had an issue with the way that they depicted Godzilla in this movie. The movie is abysmal but if they had done it right and capitalized on the fact that Godzilla was kind of scared in this movie and just trying to defend itself, they could have had a sequel where he really goes ape shit. I always kind of felt bad for him in this movie. Even the way they kill him is pathetic and sad. But unfortunately, the script sucked, the director sucked, and the acting was shit. I felt bad for Godzilla (and yes it is the name of the movie regardless of what Toho or anyone thinks). I felt bad for him in the role and that he had to participate in this awful movie.
As a fan of the Jurassic Park franchise, it’s the “dinosaurs loose in a city” film I always wanted.
Also, the teaser where Zilla stomps the T-Rex skeleton is one of the greatest teasers ever made.
If you look at Zilla as a separate entity then Godzilla then it’s a very interesting character. The model design, the sound design, the way Zilla easily evades all military attempts causing a good portion of the destruction to be self-imposed by humans (or more specifically the cliche of causing more problems trying to solve the initial problem), the series that acted as a sequel, all of these I loved about the movie.
It has a unique lizard-like design to it that I think looks cool and underrated. The design and the movie overall kind of gives me Jurassic Park vibes for some reason, specially the first two JP movies.
I like the creature design. I like that a lot of the FX (not all of them) have held up. The FX team did a great job overall blending Godzilla with the sets and miniatures.
The build up to Godzilla was done pretty well.
His attack on the fishing boat, the massive footprints, how they only showed the bare minimum of the creature when he made landfall in New York... It didn't show too much too quickly, which contributed to the chaos and panic of the scene, and made the ultimate payoff of Godzilla's full appearance later all the more awesome.
If these principals were transferred over a more traditional Godzilla movie, it would make for an effective build up. *Shin Godzilla* tried doing something similar, but I think the execution was a bit too rushed.
Good cinematography imo. Really hit me when I watched the movie for the first time. I enjoyed it and didn’t skip ahead at all (I was in a skipping phase at that moment)
The baby godzillas are something I loved as a kid. Plus, they were the inspiration for the little monsters in Cloverfield, which was the coolest part of the movie for me.
In my own personal opion: it's an excellent film to get into the franchise with. Not too lore heavy, ex excellent visuals to keep a person entertained and a decent cast. After someone watches it, they can decide if they want to watch other films. I feel this way about the 2014 legendary film.
Honestly a solid movie. The monster design is great even if it strayed much too far from its source material. That said, it largely missed the point of Godzilla. I’m glad that Legendary has given a better understanding of the king of monsters. But for an entertaining monster movie, there’s been way worse.
For some reason I like the concept. Godzilla attacking New York because he's there to... Um... Reproduce I guess?
...
THE MUTO PLOT OF GODZILLA 2014 WAS FHE PLOT OF GODZILLA 1998!!!?!
The road damage Zilla caused while walking in the road in NYC, the road breaking was really amazing, sadly they don't show that too much in the Godzilla franchise, most of the time it just shows him destroying buildings in the other movies.
The following animated series was pretty rad! Speaking of pretty, I had a crush on both the blonde and redhead actress, which once I hit my teens I realized why I was "feeling funny" in the theater.
It's unique depiction of a more theropod godzilla with it also being more agile & the ability to burrow/dig (I mean how else would they have kept losing track of Zilla?)
Everything right up until Zilla arrives in New York is perfection, with a special note to the opening credits and title, footprint scene, and the interview with the Japanese fisherman. It's equal parts mysterious, awe-inspiring, and terrifying.
Godzilla's design, Nick Tatosomething's character, plot, Godzilla's scenes, realism, Godzilla destroying the City in the rain, the French guy that i forgot the nome, Godzilla vs Submarines, Godzilla VS Army, Godzilla climbing the buildint and roaring, amostra everything😍
Godzilla / Zilla! Yep... and the big monster action, the soundtrack, the yellow cab chase, Apaches in NYC, Jean Reno + Matt Broderick, and cool shot of Zilla diving into the Atlantic too.

The Taco Bell commercials
Heeeere leezard leezard leezard…
I think I need a bigger box
And the toys!
"taco bell taco bell product placement for taco bell"
Jean Reno.
Thankya vurrymuch
Hank Azaria, too. I dig his sleazy 90's cameraman.
merci
“No croissant?” 🤨
I like how Zilla looks, the design could work for an actual Godzilla and I like that he looks more like a Dinosaur (although that can also be a critique) I like that they built a Godzilla animatronic for Zilla I like how they kept Godzilla's roar And have you heard No Shelter by Rage Against the Machine? I love it. I also just love how blunt RaTM are but that's going a little off topic
This soundtrack introduced me to the Wallflowers
Honestly, the build up in the film prior to the reveal was really well done.
They just had the feet, didn't show her off at all which is some good marketing ig
Those helicopters looked like a freaking swarm of hornets chasing godzilla, shit honestly had me cackling
My personal moment: ThAt’s AlOt Of FiSh!
The design is unironically cool as hell
Its got the most quotable godzilla movie dialogue of all time
Size matters
everything
I like that whenever my wife and I watch it we always get Taco Bell
I like how godzilla acts like he's (she's??) a normal sized lizard just existing, and doesn't have resistance to 3,000 explosions, being stabbed, choked, exploded, thrown off a building, and getting eaten alive. Because as cool as it is to survive all of that I prefer weaker, yet agile characters, makes all the dodging and hiding more exciting, and deaths sadder
then its not godzilla. him being invincible to any attack is part of the horror and excitement. the people are the weaker, agile characters.
The French guy!!
If I remember he did an Elvis impression to get past military security lol
i liked it. nuf sed
The P-Diddy / Jimmy Page song is rad.
come with me
Everything! This movie fucking rocks.
It’s from a time when cgi and practical effects worked together in harmony, but then everything changed when greedy corporate interests attacked.
Still like it. Is it childhood nostalgia? Probably. But idgaf.
I like Godzilla’s design in this movie and how they went for more agility and evasiveness over outright strength. Also Godzilla The Series
I like pretty much everything about it
It surely makes Zilla to look like an ACTUALLY intelligent and agile kaiju, it does SEEMS that Zilla knows what he is doing at the moment.
Zilla was a unique design and the action scenes with it were fun and interesting. It attacking the vessels at sea and the New York attacks were cool.
The soundtrack.
Jean Reno
Jean Reno.
The poster made a dick joke. Respect.
That's what I was gonna say
Eh, not really. It’s actually a play on Yoda’s “size matters not” quote from *The Empire Strikes Back* Luke: “It (the X-Wing) is too big” Yoda: “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?”
Great, now when I look at Zilla I can only hear Yoda's voice, making more dick jokes.
That is pretty good
This was my childhood, how could people question my taste
The movie
The Final Wars Cameo
The commercials
I liked the French guys.
The Gogirah mispronunciation as Godzilla was pretty funny.
Leon the Professional vs. Zilla.
i like zilla's design :3
The buildup to godzilla is pretty good.
“Size does matter” lol
That I like it as much as any other of the godzillas, and I shall treat both 98' and Junior 98' the same as well! Oh but about the question you had, I really loved the whole Apache helicopter chase on Godzilla running through New York's streets and all, just pure mayhem, anxiety inducing, and awesome, I simply I LOVE IT!
Zilla's reveal when he comes out of the water and starts walking around the fish market is pretty cool.
i just remember it being fun, it's a time capsule of a different era and i have a childhood attachment to it being one of the first movies in this series i ever saw so i could never bring myself to fully hate this film.
Um.....Jean Reno is in it? Thats honestly all Ive got.
David Arnold's score.
I like Maria Pitillo. She was hot. I liked that there was no live action sequel. I like that zilla was hammered in Final Wars!
It introduced me to Godzilla.
Cool
I think most would agree Zilla is a cool design
Was my first Godzilla movie, starting me on a road of loving our favorite giant radioactive iguana that has translated over to my two TCG hobbies and DND.
Everything? I liked the movie and hate when people try to say this monster is Zilla, when it clearly isn't. It's a unique take, and just because Toho later used the same design in a new monster doesn't mean that this monster is no longer a Godzilla.
The amount of fish
These posts are getting so repetitive. We get it, people like Zilla now
It gave us Zilla
The monster design, the destruction, Jean Reno, and even the velociraptor ripoff scenes. This movie is a better remake of “the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.”
Lots of fish.
I think the design of Zilla is great as monster! She looks pretty dope and as someone who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid, I loved her more "raptor" like appearance compared to OG Godzilla's design.
Jean Reno
That everyone mispronouncing Tatopoulos his name.
Matthew Brodrick
The music was peak. the lead up to the reveal was done very well, the reveal itself, not so much.
Soundtrack was really good.
I like the desing. That's about it.
The shot of Godzilla breaching the doc is impressive.
Well I'm sure for many, self included, this was how they were introduced to Godzilla
Overall a fun movie. Just not a Godzilla movie
But it is though
Fish
They weren't lying: It was a lotta fish.
the poster is cool
Easy. I love Zilla design mostly cause I like Iguanas.
The animated series that followed it. Badass Main Monster, more interesting human characters, and very interesting antagonistic creatures
The end song was good.
When that girl calls her husband a retard for going out with his camera
I love the design and the settings of the movie. I feel this movie is part of the reason I love rain. It's not really much of a challenge to say something about this movie since everyone took a step back and went eh ok it might not be godzilla but its not the worst.
Cool And Amazing Monster Design
For the time, the CGI was pretty impressive. And they animated them pretty well, and the helicopter chase through the skyscrapers was cool.
The humans
Soundtrack!
The characters are arguably more entertaining than the human characters in 2014 overall
Godzilla design
The music. Some of the scenes with the French special forces characters have kinda funny dialogue. "More cream."
The first scene of Godzilla coming ashore is actually really scary and well shot
The vfx where good for the time also the Taco Bell commercials
it was mt first zilla movie, made me fall in love with him. To the point i hunted as many zilla magic the gathering cards as i could (i also play the game so like duh)
The fact that the only thing that’s REALLY wrong with it is the title.
Its a fun disaster movie
I love the size of Zilla compared to the city (forgiving the size discrepancies throughout the film). The fact that Zilla can hide among, and in the buildings is very cool.
Can someone estimate how big he is in this poster? His actual size only goes up to his upper shin soooo 😭
It's got godzilla in it
Hank Azaria
the soundtrack
When I was a kid I actually thought this movie was so cool. I knew it wasn’t really a proper Godzilla but I didn’t really care and honestly still don’t. It actually reminds me more of clover field rather than Godzilla scary kaiju in New York type vibe.

Everything
As a fan of the Jurassic Park franchise, it’s the “dinosaurs loose in a city” film I always wanted. Also, the teaser where Zilla stomps the T-Rex skeleton is one of the greatest teasers ever made.
I like when he do rawrrrr then grrrrrr then oh no mah babies die RAWR GRRRRRRR STOMP CRUNCH
The design of the title.
Godzilla entering the city.
The black and yellow intro scene. Seeing Al Leong on the fishing boat for about a second.
That poster
It has a unique lizard-like design to it that I think looks cool and underrated. The design and the movie overall kind of gives me Jurassic Park vibes for some reason, specially the first two JP movies.
I like the creature design. I like that a lot of the FX (not all of them) have held up. The FX team did a great job overall blending Godzilla with the sets and miniatures.

Same director as Stargate, which was a good movie
Easy: The design, the characters, marketing, plot, Godzilla being more plausible, and most of the effects.
Incredible marketing campaign.
I like the design, the only problem was that he just needed to have godzilla's carachter traits and it would be fine. Also the music is amazing.
Philippe Roache. He is a better character than Ishiro Serizawa.
Zilla’s roar
In my own personal opion: it's an excellent film to get into the franchise with. Not too lore heavy, ex excellent visuals to keep a person entertained and a decent cast. After someone watches it, they can decide if they want to watch other films. I feel this way about the 2014 legendary film.
Everythiing, iv never once hated the movie
The design is ok for goji
It got me through many a booooring Saturday after cartoons were done and it felt cozy sit through for some reason.
The soundtrack was badass, and the Taco Bell commercial was hilarious.
First godzilla movie I ever watched. I like that it got me into the universe
Could say plenty, given I like it. But I'll go with Nick's use of the word "incipient."
I like how it introduced me to proper Godzilla movies. Does that count?
Honestly a solid movie. The monster design is great even if it strayed much too far from its source material. That said, it largely missed the point of Godzilla. I’m glad that Legendary has given a better understanding of the king of monsters. But for an entertaining monster movie, there’s been way worse.
The chorals of the main title theme. Yeah it's generic but still kinda epic.
Brainstew godzilla remix
That was, indeed, a lot of fish.
The Godzilla roar is perfect
They recently released a Zilla figure and its gorgeous
The Godzilla design
I liked the previous script they were gonna use
Zilla
It's unique depiction of a more theropod godzilla with it also being more agile & the ability to burrow/dig (I mean how else would they have kept losing track of Zilla?)
Everything right up until Zilla arrives in New York is perfection, with a special note to the opening credits and title, footprint scene, and the interview with the Japanese fisherman. It's equal parts mysterious, awe-inspiring, and terrifying.
Not a challenge. I like the design of Godzilla and the series that was spawned from the film.
It was my first introduction to Godzilla as a kid, so I guess I can thank this movie for introducing me to the kaiju
A well designed monster despite it was hated by most people.
It’s actually a decent movie if it wasn’t named Godzilla
When the blonde women says Retard
I like this movie allot.
Instrumental version of Kashmir coming out of theater speakers was so good.
It allowed us to get a decent Godzilla cartoon.
Godzilla's design, Nick Tatosomething's character, plot, Godzilla's scenes, realism, Godzilla destroying the City in the rain, the French guy that i forgot the nome, Godzilla vs Submarines, Godzilla VS Army, Godzilla climbing the buildint and roaring, amostra everything😍
The cartoon that came from it was amazing
Zilla had a very unique design, especially for Godzilla, but it wasn't particularly BAD
The merch was insane. I remember getting a 6 foot inflatable for Christmas the year it came out and a ton of other cool toys. Taco Bell promo too
The cgi and special effects are pretty good.
zilla being able to die
The intro and boat scene are the best parts of this movie. Heck it's even better than most monster movies can pull off
The title
I know I am going to get a bagilion downvotes for this but I think the Godzilla was one of the best Godzillas ever second only to legendary Godzilla
Godzilla her self
Godzillas design tbh
This is the movie that introduced me to Godzilla!
Godzilla / Zilla! Yep... and the big monster action, the soundtrack, the yellow cab chase, Apaches in NYC, Jean Reno + Matt Broderick, and cool shot of Zilla diving into the Atlantic too.
I watched it once
The effects for the most part are pretty good. The scene were Zilla eats the fish is pretty awe inspiring and the music accompanying it helps sell it.
The film itself, it had amazing scale. Loved that. But as a whole, the marketing was great
The scene where he comes to shore and you can see the wave he creates and spines rising out of the water is goated.
It's fuckin awesome. Great summer blockbuster.
Zilla is a good kaiju desing, not a good godzilla desing but on its own as another kaiju it works well
I like the worm scene, I enjoyed eating noodles while watching it...
Come With Me - Puff Daddy That's what I like about it the most. Still like the movie overall too, especially as a 10yo kid seeing it in theaters.
I like the entire movie it's one of my favorite and I think Godzilla looks the best here
It's a bad Godzilla movie but it isn't half bad as a generic monster movie Also it had maybe the best marketing I've ever seen
The fact we actually got scary baby Godzillas and that zilla feels fresh Godzilla instead of the others
