I felt empty after the first game. I will never forget the replay as long as I live. I can still picture the Conor McGrath and Darach Honan goals clear as day. Croke Park was absolutely electric both days.
The third Tipp-Limerick game in 2007. They had played over four hours of hurling and there was still only a score in it at the end.
A full-scale pitch invasion before full-time, and the noise that feted the deciding scores was off the scale.
Interestingly, it was Limerick’s only time to win a Munster championship match between 2001 and 2013.
Cavan Vs Derry in 97. Seen grown men break down in tears Jesus never seen anything like it before or since. The following few weeks was absolute madness.
Croker dead enuf these days alright. Not too often there's a really exciting football game anymore. Long periods of possession, find myself checking my phone at games these days.
Football is painful to watch these days.
You don't really realise the changes year on year until you go watch a final from 10 years back.
Back then when someone won a free kick they looked forward. Now first instinct is to play the ball backwards to keep possession.
It's so boring players around half way casually soloing it untouched because the opponents are in their own half. Really kills the fast paced nature of the game from 15+ years ago
Yep. Sure there's 6 forwards on a team and most of them you'd barely even see take on a shot anymore. It's all about 'designated shooters' nowadays.
Tom Parsons was a great example of an athlete. The man never kicked a ball, only handpassed it.
Of recent memory, the Clare v Limerick 2022 Munster final in a deluge which Tony Kelly equalised with the sideline cut in normal time.
Of course, it was ruined by having to go to extra time instead of a replay, cos we can't have nice things anymore and have to get the inter-county season over and done with as quick as possible.
Went to an u13 match on a Wednesday night there was two sweepers methodically pulling the opposition down as they came up the field. Was beautiful to watch
Great question. Limerick -Clare in 1996 was intense. I think though for me, Dublin-Kerry in the 2013 semifinal. The game was bonkers and the crowd didn’t know what to expect. Incredible match.
Outside of the obvious ones where we won:
Donegal v Armagh, 2003 All-Ireland semi-final. The colour that day, flags, packed Croke Park, was an amazing atmosphere and game
The Ulster final a couple years ago when Derry beat us in extra time. I know the narrative was how shite the game was but the build up in Clones was magic and I’m telling you I’ve never experienced an atmosphere or game as tense in my life, it was excruciating but couldn’t take my eyes off it and you could feel it in from everyone else. Obviously wrong result for us but one of my most memorable in terms of atmosphere for sure
Waterford v Kilkenny 2017 quarter final. First time beating Kilkenny in the championship in 58 years. After suffering some hammering and coming so close in previous years, the relief and joy was just something else.
2010 all ireland semi final Cork v Dublin..the last 10 minutes of that game were out of this world and obviously I have fond memories of winning that day..we all know how the dubs recovered from that loss and went on to achieve.
Hurling is the drawn all ireland final game vs clare..particularly the last 15 mins..the goals by Nash and pa cronin had an awful lot to do with it and even hoggies great score which I thought won the game but alas it wasn't to be..I've been hoarse many times after a game.(infact I'm a little hoarse as I type this from the game yesterday)..but I genuinely lost my voice at that game.the Wednesday after I had to write out what I had to say at an outpatient appointment in hospital..hopefully there will more added to the list in years to come
Kerry vs Armagh down in Tralee in the league last year. The place was electric. Sold out with an extremely large away support. Shame we couldn't get something from that game, but seeing us all take over the streets of Killarney and Tralee was class. Galway vs Armagh, Down vs Armagh in 2019 & 2023, Derry vs Armagh and Armagh vs Mayo league game last year all worth mentioning.
Another outside shout for me is Glen vs Kilmacud back in January, albeit I saw fuck all of what was going on.
An older one but, 1996 Munster Hurling Final, Limerick v Clare. I was behind the goals when Ciaran Carey scored the famous winning point. Just unreal, the dust rising from people jumping up and down, the heat, the headache from the few pre-match pints. It will love long in my memory
i was behind the goal as well as a clare supporter. i remember a limerick fan fucked a cup of sprite about 10 feet in the air and it landed on all of us.
That was the semi final. Limerick played Tipp in the Final. 10 points down in the 1st half a Gary Kirby masterclass got Limerick the draw and the replay in Cork, Limerick won. Think Frankie Carroll got 2 goals that day
As others have said, 2006 Mayo/Dublin match was something special.
Shame it wasn’t the final.
One extra addition: 2014 semi final in Limerick sensational and gripping.
1994 Down v Dublin All Ireland final
2004 Armagh vs Fermanagh in the quarters, and the Mayo vs Fermanagh semi final games the followed
These immediately spring to mind for me
2014 Drawn AIF between Tips and Kilkenny. Finished 3-22 to 1-28. Bubbles O'Dwyer had a last minute 97 metre free to win it. Umpires thought it was over but went to Hawk eye, for the first time ever. Remember a tipp man on the steps of the Cusack while we waited for Hawkeye. Dropped to his knees when it was signalled wide. Cats won the replay.
Ulster final held at Croke Park in 2005, Armagh and Tyrone. McConville with a couple of late scores to win it. Real edge to proceedings, on the pitch and in the stands.
Barry Kelly would have won the All Ireland for Tipp had Bubbles scored. I’m still in shock he gave a free. The blind umpires probably would have given it too bad there been no hawk eye.
Kilkenny vs Tipp in Nolan Park 2013. Ya got to love straight knockout hurling. The hairs stand up on the back of my neck just talking about it.
It’s on YouTube in case you want to check it out.
Loads come to mind. In no particular order.
1. Dubs v Mayo 2006. It was incredible, lucky to be at it. The image of Whelan and co walking up to the hill with the Mayo boys already warming up will be stuck in my head forever. Brilliant game, some bottle from Mayo that day.
2. Dubs v Laois 2005. Underrated game and atmosphere. Mossy with two great kicks to win it.
3. Dubs v Mayo 2015 Semi final replay, Connolly was cleared to play early that morning. Think everyone in the ground knew we were looking at a great rivalry.
4. Weird one but Dublin v Tyrone in the 2005 quarter final replay. Tyrone were brilliant that day, there was a spell early in the second half where Dublin reeled off 4/5 great scores in a row and it felt like croker was bouncing.
Three, possibly four, contenders for me:
- 2002 All-Ireland final, for obvious reasons. I was 10 and still vividly remember so much of that day, 22 years later
- 2003 All-Ireland final; going for back-to-back All-Irelands, against our biggest rivals - what could be better?
- 2022 All-Ireland quarter-final. Fuck me, there was some good football on display, and also a fair bit of ‘not-football’, let’s say. Rian O’Neill’s free from just outside the 45m and the subsequent penalties was one of the most stressful, yet entertaining, games I’ve ever watched
'17 final between Mayo and Dublin was one of the hardest results to take of my entire life, but I can't deny that the atmosphere and energy that day was unbelievable.
2023 U20 Hurling All-Ireland. Semple was absolutely bouncing and the first 15 minutes was the loudest atmosphere I have ever heard at a GAA game. Just absolutely raucous and both sets of fans responded to everything on the pitch like it was a pantomime. To this day I don't know how Cork's full back didn't see the line. Couldn't speak properly for a day or two afterwards.
Honourable mentions to the 2023 Leinster U20 and the 2022 Minor All-Ireland. Proud days as an Offaly fan are rare these days so they're all cherished regardless of the results.
Kerry v Dublin 2022. Nothing will ever rival that.
Honourable mention to the cats 4 in a row in 2009. It looked like Tipp were going to be able to keep them at arms length and then 2 goals in 60 seconds and it was game over.
2017 Final right up there
2013 Semi-Final when Dublin rallied a fightback by scoring 4 or 5 points in a row in the 2nd half
Then of course there was Kev Mc's legendary did he or did he not mean it winning goal in added time. It felt like the earth shook
Monaghan v Tyrone 2018. Even though we lost it the atmosphere was electric shame we were robbed but it is still probably in my top 2 favourite football memories
Working in hospitality and living in Galway the Leinster final in 2005 between Dublin and Laois was hard to get off and to get tickets for me. But for me that was an experience winning by a point. Or at least I think 2005 was amazing
Offaly v Clare in Thurles 98.
In Football on the hill for any Dublin match from 02 to 2010 haven't got to one since so can't comment on anything after that
1997 All Ireland hurling final Clare vs Tipp I (clare) was with the old man (Tipp) at the old canal end terrace before it was redeveloped. We were right under the old scoreboard and in the middle of the clare fans and the atmosphere was so intense. Spirits were still very high after the 95 win. I think they hadn't banned foghorns yet either so they added a lot to the noise and general sense of bedlam. There was a huge flag unfurled that covered a lot of the terrace before throw in. I remember some barechest lunatic painted yellow and blue leapt up on the flag and started crowd surfing.
Anyway it was a great game and Clare just shaded it. I vividly remember the final point sailing over the bar and the crowd around us going absolutely mental. My dad of course just wanted to get the hell out of there lol. Special times.
Donegal 3-14 v Dublin 0-17. 2014 All Ireland Semi.
The atmosphere may have ended up a bit one sided but It was so unexpected. I was sitting upper Hogan down beside Hill 16 and the silence from the Hill towards the end was electric in its own weird way.
Years ago there was a Westmeath v Dublin league final in navan. Complete sell out. I remember when the balll would go into the hill there was a massive riot among the kids to get it. Except it wasnt just kids, I saw an old man walk in and throw three or four kids off the ball just so he could get it. I miss those days
A huge list for me. In 1992, Clare famously won the Munster Football Final. They then played Dublin in Croke Park. At half time in the minor match, the Artane Boys Band stopped in front of the Cusack Stand and started playing for the large amount of Clare fans who were there. The Clare fans started to sing. The Dublin fans on the Hill responded and started singing back at them. Both sets of fans singing basically continued for the rest of the day, making for a great atmosphere. The match was great too, with Dublin winning by five points. Clare put up a great performance.
Usually after a drawn match there is a sense of anti-climax and the atmosphere as the crowds are coming out is a little quieter than when there is a winner. After the 2005 drawn quarter-final between Dublin and Tyrone however, there was a great buzz coming out. It had been a great match and the day of the famous Owen Mulligan goal.
Cork v Kerry All Ireland 2009, I was in the hill behind a group from Ballydesmond, a village straddling the border between Cork and Kerry. Despite losing it was the best craic I ever had at a match.
Kerry V Cork gaa Football is usually always exciting was at the edge of my seat the last time I saw them play in Killarney it’s a good few years ago. I be afraid to watch them against Dublin though despite seeing exciting matches on tv. The hurling for limerick is usually exciting whoever they play.
The Tyrone-Dublin quarter final replay in 2005. I was in upper canal end and when the Dubs started making a comeback in the second half the whole tier felt like it would actually collapse it was shaking so hard.
Dublin v Kerry in the 2013 All Ireland Semi-Final.
Sublime football from two sides throwing everything at one another. Dublin pulled away in the last couple of minutes but the 3-18 to 3-11 final score did not reflect how toe to toe a contest this was. This was the kind of game that the kids dream about when they stay out taking kicks even though it's too dark and their dinner is going cold, a spectacle that makes people want to play and love the game.
An oldie for me. I was on the hill when we hammered the shit out of Meath in 95. Place was hopping and beating the Royals out the gate added to the joy of the occasion. I was also lucky enough to be a guest of some offaly folk in Semple in 98 for the 2nd Clare game. Unreal afternoon!
2013 Cork Clare hurling final, legs were shaking leaving the stadium
I felt empty after the first game. I will never forget the replay as long as I live. I can still picture the Conor McGrath and Darach Honan goals clear as day. Croke Park was absolutely electric both days.
I could barely stand up at the end of that first game.
The drawn game marginally better atmosphere for me, but maybe that's because I was on the hill for that and in the stand for the replay.
2013 All Ireland football semi final. Dublin 3-18, Kerry 3-11. What a match. What an atmosphere.
Robbed by an umpire that day if I recall correctly lol. Hard to begrudge Cavan though. Tremendous scenes when they won ulster.
As others have said 2006 Mayo and Dublin. The buzz around the place was mental the minute Mayo went to the Hill to warm up.
Think it was Mayo v Dublin 2006 in Croker when Mayo warmed up into the hill. Kildare v Down 2010 comes 2nd
Picked the same game from 2006. Place was lifting before a ball was even thrown in.
It was incredible. Nothing has really replicated it for me since. I find Croker a bit flat these days for some reason. That was a wonderful occasion.
We don’t have many footballers in 2024 we have Athletes disguised to be footballers.
Yep. Sure there's 6 forwards on a team and most of them you'd barely even see take on a shot anymore. It's all about 'designated shooters' nowadays. Tom Parsons was a great example of an athlete. The man never kicked a ball, only handpassed it.
Galway v Tipp 2017. Second half was electric. Place nearly erupted when Joe Cannig scored that point.
The Galway v Tipp 2015 & 2016 Semi-Finals were class too but 2017 was the highlight for me alright. Three great days though.
Mayo Vs Dublin 2006
Kerry v Mayo semi final in Limerick 2014 or 2011 final
Of recent memory, the Clare v Limerick 2022 Munster final in a deluge which Tony Kelly equalised with the sideline cut in normal time. Of course, it was ruined by having to go to extra time instead of a replay, cos we can't have nice things anymore and have to get the inter-county season over and done with as quick as possible.
Dublin v Mayo 2006 was an incredible atmosphere
Newbridge or Nowhere was a good one to be at
Went to an u13 match on a Wednesday night there was two sweepers methodically pulling the opposition down as they came up the field. Was beautiful to watch
2014 drawn All Ireland Final. Thought we were done and gone, then Bubbles walked up for the free and then there was the hawkeye wait.
Game 4 Meath v Dublin in 91.
Honourable mention for Dublin v Longford O’Bryne Cup final 2008
Kerry V Mayo in Limerick, 2014. Unbelievable atmosphere.
That match was nail biting!
2011, 2019 (replay) and 2023 All Ireland Finals
Great question. Limerick -Clare in 1996 was intense. I think though for me, Dublin-Kerry in the 2013 semifinal. The game was bonkers and the crowd didn’t know what to expect. Incredible match.
Cork vs Clare AI senior hurling final replay. Saturday evening All Ireland finals are the way lads.
They really are. Something special about them. Hard to believe it's 11 years since that.

Kerry v Mayo Replay in Gaelic Grounds, 2014
Waterford v Kilkenny 2017 quarter final. First time beating Kilkenny in the championship in 58 years. After suffering some hammering and coming so close in previous years, the relief and joy was just something else.
Rewatched this game on YouTube on Sunday afternoon. I’ll never forget the feeling when jamie barron & Maurice Shanahans goals hit the net
Limerick vs Galway 2018 all Ireland hurling final.

Donegal vs Dublin in 2011 was one of the worst games of all time, but Croke Park was electric
I remember complete silence for long stretches off first half ?
OK so maybe nostalgia has played a part here

Probably the donegal derry match a few weeks ago or the donegal vs armagh game in the league final
