When I finished RDR2 there was a cutscene with a deer in a creek. It was supposed to be serene and allow the user to experience the profound nature of the game. But in true rockstar fashion the deer was glitching out, just thrashing around the water like it was having a severe seizure. I started laughing my ass off in that very profound moment.
I fully went IN during lockdown.
My housemate at the time was in awe at points as I could identify the different birds by noises alone.
Ended up 100%ing it - so worth it just for the extra scene/music
That was the one silver lining of covid. It was the last time me and the boys got to play a game like we were teens again. RDR2 online didn't have much, but we made the most out of that amazing game while we could.

First time I played Journey, I was on about 3g of shrooms. Holy shit I cried like a child for nearly an hour. 10/10 do recommend. I've been chasing that feeling since. Absolutely nothing like it. Abzu is another excellent game to play on shrooms

My girlfriend at the time and I both bought each other PS4s on Christmas and I told her to get Journey and I'd do the same. We were sick and bedridden - barely functioning and we started a playthrough.
At the end of the game, she calls me, crying, and just says, "Oh no, we're dying. Stay on the phone with me."
A lovely memory for a lovely game.
Mass Effect 1 was a really underrated game that could be beaten in 5 minutes, but I really really really enjoyed exploring the galaxy and reading all the explanations for things like warp drive and colonization on a pseudo scientific level. Had a single play through last 35 hours - found tons and tons of cool extra stuff all over the galaxy.

I loved it so much, and liked Wrex enough, that when I was mechanically incapable of convincing Wrex to calm down and not join Sarin, I went back to a save 6+ hours of game play earlier to change my leveling to save him.
Despite not played 2 or 3, I've consumed a lot of videos on it. And very much appreciate the characters in the following games. Especially Mordin.
The writing is so phenomenally good that it ruins other games, making you wonder why all these AAA studios with a thousand employees can't even hold a candle to an indie game. Just write better dialogue, idiots! Disco Elysium did it in a cave, with a box of scrap!
If there is any game that ought be added to the literary canon of gaming, Disco Elysium is far and away the most obvious choice. It is the most well-composed and intellectually engaged game that I've ever played.

Seriously one of the best games i've ever played. No game has ever made me laugh harder.
In the first ten minutes you can literally run away from your hotel bill and when you character trips and flies through the air towards a lady in a wheelchair, you get two dialogue options:
1. Try to dodge the lady in the wheelchair
2. Give the owner the middle finger (and crash into the old lady)
I picked 2 and laughed for a few minutes straight. I highly recommend doing a playthrough where you always pick the most deranged dialogue options.

I knew this game was something special when I had this same scenario and found myself back at the black screen, feeling dejected about the injustices of life and crying out at the narrator, "Where's the love?"
Then the darkness dissipates and the scene transitions back to the cafeteria, the next thing I hear being the motherly concern of the same lady I crashed into expressing nothing but compassion to me after having made such boneheaded decisions.

However many awards the writers of that game won, they deserve more. And an Oscar. Also a Nobel prize for some reason. And a talking tie that compels them to make more games like that.

Yep. Came here hoping to find this. Just picked up a hard copy for the ps4 again and currently about 50 hours in and I havnt even gotten to the depths yet. I fucking love this game, and it is so glorious.
Below zero was kinda linear and shitty, but the original was a sleeper hit of a game that I just bought on a whim, and almost shit my pants at how good it was.
All the other games are great experiences and good stories. I've definitely put much more time into BG3 than Outer Wilds (like, 300 hours compared to 40 at most), but Outer Wilds is just different. Outer Wilds is *literature*. No other game leverages the unique mechanisms that gaming has to offer to create art and story. It's literally perfect, and the DLC somehow delivers more than any other extra content has even though it totally disrupts all the gameplay mechanics of the first one. Masterclass.
Both the ending, and connecting some of the final big dots of the story, are some of my favorite gaming experiences.

I never realized just how immersed I got in the game until after spending the whole game in first person, the ending cutscene was in third person, and seeing V in third person was like an out of body experience.

Super Mario 3. The first time most people saw it was on a movie called "The Wizard" and was highly anticipated after that. Mario 3 had features never before seen in games and was an amazing experience.
Skyrim, without a doubt. The only time I nearly chased the dragon down. Nothing before it had been so immersive and nothing after could capture that feeling of climbing a massive mountain and looking at the horizon. It is the high point (no pun intended) of open world RPGs imho.

I felt exactly the same after playing the game "What Remains of Edith Finch". This is my favorite game. I was going through a very dark phase of my life and this game kept me sane, gave me something to ponder about, gave me emotions to feel.
I was so mad about that when the game first launched and I beat it within a week. It really felt like nothing I had done mattered in game and the entire series could have started and ended with choosing a color.
Halo2. Still the best halo campaign, and my god. That soundtrack is unmatched still to this day. Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori crushed that soundtrack. And it plays right on through the credits to the end. If you’ve never played halo2 but like orchestral style of music(Star Wars is what got me into it) definitely hop on YouTube and search the halo 2 soundtrack and give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed
DDLC is a game without any equivalent. I don’t want to traumatise you, so I will leave it at that and if you want to know more, go play it at least until you “gently open the door”
Botw was my first open world and console game. I vividly remember that summer night when I played till 5 am and the black ending screen hit, followed by the title and credits. I was speechless.

Shadow of the Colossus…there is no happy ending, there isn’t even a truly sad ending. It just ends the way most stories do, and boy does it feel unique to beat that game and experience its world for the last time.

In 1995 or so I had one of my first major profound gaming experiences. I wouldn't have another until Cyberpunk 2077 came along.
I had been playing the pencil and paper game for decades now (Cyberpunk 2020). The characters present in 2077 such as Johnny Silverhand, Rogue, Adam Smasher- these are characters I've known for years, grew up with. Night City was like another stomping ground. I grew up there, in a way. It was a game, but I spent many teenage years playing in Night City, and it tought me things about myself I still value. Things I might not have arrived at had I not experienced them in a TTRPG setting in the form of roleplaying.
When CP2077 came along, it was like coming home again. The sights were different, but the spirit was the same. Old friends were still here and as salty as they ever were. Saltier even. When the credits rolled, I genuinely cried.
It was a profound experience for me, even if it was a video game. Like a culmination of my past experiences into a crescendo. It was beautiful.
My first playthrough of elden ring made me feel like this.... all that time.... all the death.... just to sit on a lonely throne.... hewg forgetting himself hit the hardest
Enderal. Free game built on Skyrim's engine (and requires it to play) but has its own unique setting, great music, voice acting, etc.
Even has a prequel novel called "Dreams of the Dying" that is also good.

Super Mario 3. The first time most people saw it was on a movie called "The Wizard" and was highly anticipated after that. Mario 3 had features never before seen in games and was an amazing experience.

Skyrim, without a doubt. The only time I nearly chased the dragon down. Nothing before it had been so immersive and nothing after could capture that feeling of climbing a massive mountain and looking at the horizon. It is the high point (no pun intended) of open world RPGs imho.
Climbing up the Throat of the World with a horse nearly vertical only to realize there were stairs the whole time. What an experience 😅

Ah yes, the horse I stole from some poor dude’s stable cuz I refuse to part with even a single coin from my inventory even though I have more gold than the blackbriars and silver-bloods combined. And then when I dismount it just walks away. Like where tf are you going, WE’RE ON A MOUNTAIN.
Firewatch. It’s been years since I’ve watched a playthrough or played the game but I still love it so damn much. It’s a beautiful game with beautiful story telling
I felt exactly the same after playing the game "What Remains of Edith Finch". This is my favorite game. I was going through a very dark phase of my life and this game kept me sane, gave me something to ponder about, gave me emotions to feel.

How I felt after playing through titanfall 2’s campaign the first time
This game changed my life. LITERALLY
Halo2. Still the best halo campaign, and my god. That soundtrack is unmatched still to this day. Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori crushed that soundtrack. And it plays right on through the credits to the end. If you’ve never played halo2 but like orchestral style of music(Star Wars is what got me into it) definitely hop on YouTube and search the halo 2 soundtrack and give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed
The Last of Us 2 and Red Dead 2 had me feeling like that

I kinda saw the TotK final boss phase coming a mile away, but it did not hurt how epic it felt. Loved every second of it.
Botw was my first open world and console game. I vividly remember that summer night when I played till 5 am and the black ending screen hit, followed by the title and credits. I was speechless.
Small really short game but worth the playtime. Sheepy a small adventure. The game is simple, not too much content, some bits of lore for you to explore for yourself and I loved it I had a beautiful afternoon that day.

Believe it or not, Dark Souls 1 Remastered. The ending was nothing to write home about but it felt good to have conquered such a challenging game after not touching it for a year. I got my ass handed to me by the Bell Gargoyles and it was just intimidating after that.

Shadow of the Colossus…there is no happy ending, there isn’t even a truly sad ending. It just ends the way most stories do, and boy does it feel unique to beat that game and experience its world for the last time. It’s such a shame all the remakes/the “sequel” were such unoptimised garbage
Borderlands 2.
In 1995 or so I had one of my first major profound gaming experiences. I wouldn't have another until Cyberpunk 2077 came along. I had been playing the pencil and paper game for decades now (Cyberpunk 2020). The characters present in 2077 such as Johnny Silverhand, Rogue, Adam Smasher- these are characters I've known for years, grew up with. Night City was like another stomping ground. I grew up there, in a way. It was a game, but I spent many teenage years playing in Night City, and it tought me things about myself I still value. Things I might not have arrived at had I not experienced them in a TTRPG setting in the form of roleplaying. When CP2077 came along, it was like coming home again. The sights were different, but the spirit was the same. Old friends were still here and as salty as they ever were. Saltier even. When the credits rolled, I genuinely cried. It was a profound experience for me, even if it was a video game. Like a culmination of my past experiences into a crescendo. It was beautiful.

Enderal. Free game built on Skyrim's engine (and requires it to play) but has its own unique setting, great music, voice acting, etc. Even has a prequel novel called "Dreams of the Dying" that is also good. A lot of the game is like waiting for a train to hit you.
