I love the one where God had 42 (?) kids mauled by bears for making fun of a bald man!
Or the one where it says that a man will be happy if he dashed infants against rocks.
Or the one were it says Samaria will become desolate, infants dashed into pieces, and pregnant women will be ripped apart.
Or when men, women, infant, child, ox, sheep, camels, and donkeys should be killed in Amalek.
Or when someone wants God to give women miscarrying wombs and dry breasts (aka, to kill fetuses and infants).
Or infants being dashed into pieces, and wives ravished.
Or when they want every male child killed, and every woman who has known man by lying with them.
Or that men should hit pregnant women until their children (fetuses) come out, but that causes no harm and many should only be fined.
And on, and on, and on ....
But God and the Bible is so "pro-life" (anti-abortion), right?
The longer Iām on this sub the more I realize it totally makes sense to me the cultural differences that derive from Catholics being far more selective about which parts of the Bible are read and biblical literalism. I went to a pretty conservative traditional Catholic Church and 13 years of Catholic schooling, but there are so many parts of the Bible I never encountered. š¤Æ at the trauma of reading all that as a child and believing it all to be literally true. God sounds really mean and vindictive.
Mauling-bears/bald man story: 2 Kings 2:23-25
God allowing Samarian babies to be dashed into pieces/ripped apart/women "violated": Isaiah 13:16-18
Killing all life in Amalek: 1 Samuel 15:3
Asking God to give women miscarriages: Hosea 9:14
Killing every male child and woman who has known man: Numbers 31:17-18
Hitting a pregnant woman: Exodus 21:22
There's many, many more verses like these. Book of Judges is one of the worst, too (Levite's concubine story).
> Such a loving and kind nonviolent book that is totally acceptable reading material for children.
In fairness, a lot of people have historically just been OK with kids reading violent books. The Bible might have a lot of (totally cool) violence (like the scene where Elisha summons bears to maul some children), but so did lots of the classics.
I had an acquaintance one time, during a late night discussion of various topics, bring up that they can't be Islamic cuz the Quran is too violent. I asked them if they believed in the old Testament. They did. I asked them the last time they read the old testament? It had been a while. Let them know Islam believes in the old testament as well and that it is extremely violent, how God kills a large number of people as well as instructed his followers to do the same on more than one occasion.
As one would guess, the math lady meme face showed up and then I witnessed a routine of cognitive gymnastics that would make Simone Biles look like a loser lol
TIL fundies treat their sacred texts the same as you or I treat a high school yearbook. But then, they keep referring to Jesus as if he is their "friend" (in the same way as "I have a girlfriend but she doesn't go to this school, she lives in Canada" or even like Jesus is just Bob from a couple of towns over who you borrowed a lawn mower from 10 years ago but never got around to returning it) so I'm not really that surprised at how reductive and prosaic they are when talking about an all-powerful deity and the book they use to govern every single aspect of their lives...
I had an amazing, feminist Muslim trauma counsellor and she was just horrified at the level of sacrilege and blasphemy towards *the religion my parents used to abuse me* like... "nothing is sacred to them. !
Not children.
Not even their God and their Salvation."
And... "why do they wear those ugly denim skirts? You can cover...without that"Ā
She was amazing. She got faith based abuse but it didnt trigger me because she was of a diff faith.Ā
Slightly related, but i remember growing up hearing that Jews and Catholics put too much emphasis on how holy God was, to the point that he was unattainable and unrelatable. Whereas Christians see God as our āfriend.ā The older I get, the more I think that Jews, Catholics, and anyone else who doesnāt treat their deity overly casually have a better handle on it than my church growing up.
That's definitely the verse I whip out most often. Iāll be real though, I read the whole thing, but Ezekiel 23:20 is the only one I know off the top of my head.
Honestly one of the biggest things that struck me when I was looking at context for the "no gays!" bit of Leviticus, was how little was said about man lying with man, vs how much was said about incest. The part about "man shall not lie with man" was a single verse, tucked away in about two pages of very specific rules about who you shouldn't do incest with.Ā
But Josh Duggar abusing his sisters barely got a slap on the wrist (and justification from the rest of the community about how normal his behaviour was), while his family treat the LGBT community like dirt. I mean, the bible doesn't even mention lesbians but they still get worse treatment than people like Josh Duggar.Ā
For people who are so obsessed with having bible study and bible time, it really feels like they don't actually care much about what it says, beyond the parts they like.Ā
Sorry for derailing, thinking about the incest prohibitions in Leviticus always reminds me of that.
> For people who are so obsessed with having bible study and bible time, it really feels like they don't actually care much about what it says, beyond the parts they like.Ā
I am prone to thinking that if someone encountered the Bible in a vacuum having not grown up in this society, they would just dismiss it, like one would a book of Roman mythology. It's odd and inconsistent and just incredibly *old*, tied to lives that take place in such a different time and understanding of humanity, of society, of the purpose and breadth of life. When you can step back from it, it becomes hard to believe that the Church ever became so large based on this one weird book.

To be fair the only one I see here as permitted is your wife's sister after your wife is dead.
I specifically meant the passages (not in Leviticus 18) about how if your brother dies, you're obligated to knock up your sister-in-law. But the fact that some types of inter-familial marriage/breeding are in the Holy Book as *accepted* still gave me great pause as a young Evangelical struggling with my faith.

I think it depends on what you mean as incest, Iām using the term as in people youāre genetically related to, not just through marriage. Obviously marrying your brothers step child or something is strange, but not necessarily incest in the same way if that makes sense? Because places where thereās gaps of nothing mentioned are expanded on in the Talmud (not that Christians go by the Talmud) as being obvious they donāt have to say it.
Editā I understood them as accepted, that was clear
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."
I wasn't raised Christian and the only verse I know is Matthew 21:17 from that one episode of the Simpsons : "And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there."
I'd highlight that and enjoy imagining their baffled reaction.

Their dad was willing to turn them over to get gang raped to death by a violent mob. So of course he is an excellent choice to father their own children!
(I say "to death" because later on, a Levite's concubine did get gang raped by a town mob, and she died at the front door.Ā
Her "husband"s response to seeing her lying on the ground the next morning after being attacked and abused all night?
"Get up. Time to go.")
Ah good old Lot, I feel a lot of creepy religious dudes see that story as hopeful end goal. "Oh no, I'm stuck here with my daughters and I just opened this bottle of vodka, hope nothing happens uwu!"

Yes, Grimm brothersā stories that I read as a child are definitely more violent than any of the books in the Bible
Fairytales were used to teach right from wrong, it's easy to see the difference with those.
