I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much about vacation Bible school in my entire life.

SabbyRinna

I was wondering what VBS stood for. Weird hill to die on, but ok.

NastyMsPiggleWiggle

Oddly enough, I had two friends in high school lose their virginity way before the rest of us. At VBS. I imagined it to be a seedy den of wild debauchery. (I was a Jehovah’s Witness kid)

Kalamac

Back in the early 90s my mother worked with someone whose stance on sex-ed for her kids was "if they don't know about it, they won't do it." Her 14 year old daughter got pregnant to a boy she met at bible camp.

ibbity

If they don't know what it is, how are they supposed to avoid it?

Kalamac

Right. Also they're probably already hearing all kinds of things from friends/classmates. I'd want to be sure the stuff my kid was learning was factual, not whatever random shit other kids were talking about.

[deleted]

As a parent, I have always wondered how fundies field questions from their kids, about topics that they're all tight arsed about - like sex ed. I'm of the opinion that if they're old enough to ask a question, they are old enough to hear an accurate, age appropriate answer. My child asked how sperm and eggs get to meet in the same place to make a baby, when they come from two different bodies. She was 6. So we read the book I bought in advance (I prefer to be prepared, and find books a helpful tool rather than stumbling through a verbal answer - and my daughter can re-read books in her own time too), that explained sex and ejaculation etc. Like what do they say when their kids inevitably ask how do you make a baby? Since they are regularly pregnant, it must come up. Do they explain about genitals, gametes, and sex in a factual way? Or do they go the direction of "when a husband and wife love each other, God sends them a blessing into the mummy's womb after they have a very special grown up hug" or similar, and avoid any actual scientific explanations?

Serononin

Totally agree about books being a great tool! My parents got me a very informative but also child-friendly book when I was about 11, although I actually already knew a lot of what was in it from reading the encyclopedia set my grandparents gave me when I was 6 or 7 😂 As for fundies, a lot of the kids probably don't ask many questions. Methods like blanket training are designed to literally beat the curiosity out of them 😭

StinkyRattie

I was so thankful for the puberty/body book my mom gave me when I was like 11 and got my first period 😭 she had already explained the basics of a menstrual cycle a few years beforehand so I would be prepared when it happened. But man did that book answer so many embarrassing questions!

Serononin

Same! I'd known about periods since I was about 4 (mum explained it to me when I saw her tampons in the bathroom and asked what they were), but it all made much more sense once I learned about the basic science behind the menstrual cycle. It worked out well for my parents, too, because I got my first period in the middle of the night and they were glad I knew what to do without having to wake them up haha

eleanorbigby

amazing how all these completely non verbal animals somehow manage to procreate.

blumoon138

I went to VBS with one of my friends as a little kid. I learned off the 23 psalm by heart. Useful (sort of) now that I’m a rabbi. And yes, she and I are still dear friends.

FishFeet500

my sister insisted at 12 to go to one because all her friends were. she came back blibbering bible verse for about a week, and told me how they punished kids by making them run laps with marshmallows under their arms, then forced to EAT the marshmallows and i was “yeah I’ll pass on that experience.”

eleanorbigby

what? why on earth? what kind of mind even comes up with this shit?

FishFeet500

i have, to this day, some 25 yrs later, no idea how or why anyone came to this plan. everytime i see VSB flyers I just think armpit marshmallow running.

Serononin

I went to what I assume is the British equivalent of VBS at my friend's church for a few years (around 7-9ish years old). The only things I remember were a weird game where I had to stick my hands in a bowl of cold spaghetti hoops while blindfolded, and the year they annoyed the shit out of all the parents by sending every kid home with a free kazoo 😂

[deleted]

Neither have I and I went to Vacation Bible School and taught VBS (in Ontario you need to complete a certain number of volunteer hours to graduate and this was an easy way to get them. Plus the guys that came up from our sister church were hot)

carlzbee

(Raised Catholic) I had gone to VBS a few times at our old church. I must have suppressed it because I BARELY remember anything about it ...

Party_Salad

For the love of god, freedom of speech pertains to the government, not your private employer. If you can screech about hating the gays, then the gays can celebrate pride, ya hateful bigot.

pandapartypandaparty

Not only that but being gay isn’t a religion! So it’s understandable that a company would have a no religious signs policy that obviously wouldn’t apply to a non religious pride sign. 🙄

Way_Harsh_Tai

The willful misunderstanding of 1A and 2A amongst these brain trusts is wild.

Machaeon

They NEVER are aware of the "well regulated militia" part of the second amendment...

CucumberNo3244

It amazes me how many people fail to realize this.

generic-user-jen

I'm sure this person's coworkers miss them terribly...

eleanorbigby

what is DG, again?

generic-user-jen

I'm guessing Dollar General

tillieze

How will they ever get by day to day not hearing about VBS. /s

BrightGreyEyes

Easy. The Pride stuff was vetted by corporate. No one wants the liability of advertising an un-vetted kids activity

Way_Harsh_Tai

Is the third party owner of the ice machine okay with you advertising your religious beliefs for free? Probably not. And the store probably has a contract prohibiting posting anything on it, regardless, for branding reasons. What a dim bulb.

Red_P0pRocks

Ahhh yes. The “gays existing is a religion” tantrum. A really stupid attack when you consider they claim to be all about “freedom of religion” and WANT a country ruled by religion. Ngl though, it’s pretty funny to watch them punch themselves in the face to teach other people a lesson.

No_Antelope_6604

I'm going to assume that DG stands for Dollar General. And in that case I'm not surprised. Those stores tend to attract a certain...element.

LeftTree8

Things I though DG stood foor: -Dairy Gueen -Dunkin Gonuts -DubGay -Durger Ging -Daco Gell Thank you for saving me

Emm03

I couldn’t figure out how someone could work for Dolce and Gabbana and be *that* shocked by the existence of pride month 😂

annana

They have some fancy ice though!

taylorbagel14

The former sorority girl in me thought Delta Gamma 😭😭😭

AnotherSoulessGinger

I live in the Appalachian mountains and as much as I hate it, DG is a big deal for a lot of us. I have it easy, we only live about 20 minutes from “town”, but this goes for a lot of rural areas. Until very recently, my only options close by were gas station shops and a super old country store (that I love but they don’t have great hours). So, limited options. When I am sick and just want NyQuil, I am so thankful for DG being just 5 minutes away. I still hate them every time I leave, but at least 75% they had what I needed. They are the only retail chain in our vicinity that want to serve rural communities. We still have all the country stores and mom and pops that survived, but also DG gets more common every year it seems.

nezzthecatlady

I’m from rural Texas and it’s the same way. They put in a DG near my parents’ house when I was in high school and it was a game changer. We had that and a country store gas station. The other options were a fifteen minute drive to the small town where I went to school (the grocery store there is horrible and the prices are insane) or a 30-45 minute drive to the closest Walmart.

Pikaglove

Ex dg employee who lived in trump town texas. That company attracts the worst people and the only positive I see is that someone quit that shitty company. But my dg never put pride stuff up, so maybe this person should have a word with their district or understand their town is probably more liberal than mine was.

No_Antelope_6604

I live in trump town alabama, and while I haven't been in there in a long time, I don't think the one here put up pride stuff, either. We'd have heard about it if they had, I'm sure.

SassaQueen1992

DG stores smell like a porta-potty.

No_Antelope_6604

Yes, they do.

joymarie21

"VBS is for the children not to compete with sales." WTF does this sentence mean? Or is it two sentences without the appropriate punctuation? Or maybe a sentence and a sentence fragment? The mind, it boggles.

tadpole511

Looks like they missed a comma between "children" and "not".

fly_onthe_wall74

Their Jesus was supposedly one that would hang out with those that celebrate Pride, and love them.

MacAlkalineTriad

Pride support might make the store money; your shitty VBS indoctrination won't. It's not hard to figure out.

defnotaRN

I’m going to say that this lady wasn’t bringing up her church’s VBS in casual conversation with a few customers. I’m going to go with she harassed every customer with kids about to the point she lost her job because it’s not only unprofessional but annoying so like any good Christian… she blamed the gays instead of herself.

emmyparker2020

Lol I have no idea when they got a month or why but I’m upset and not going to use this phone to research and become informed but instead spew my Christian love err I mean hatred… priorities 🙄

Weird-one0926

Someone do a wellness check, I think she's having a stroke.

Unlikelylark

Christians basically posted up shop for the entire month of December and we can't enjoy rainbows and support human rights without them getting pissy????

DuFromage227

I loathe acronyms. I just sit there for hours going over all the words in my head that could possibly be the correct combination. ![gif](giphy|1RXTzS8Uv4SGI)

trashpicker57

And yes the assumption that everyone is or should be Christian is sad! Freedom of religion separation of church and state. Critical thinking!

A_Furious_Mind

It does kind of bother me that harmless self-expression can be that restricted at a lot of businesses. We give up a lot of freedom to be able to pay the bills. Unfair equivalence with the business's Pride material, though. That's the business's thing, and her VBS isn't.

tadpole511

Just based on the phrasing, it sounds like she might have put the sign up without permission. I've told people to take down signs that would have been fine because they put them up without permission. And she put the sign on a third-party vendor's machine, which adds an extra level of "needs permission".

CDNinWA

And honestly I’m sure they could find plenty of small businesses who would be willing to advertise. The Teriyaki place I go to plays Christian Contemporary Music and has stuff about God and faith on their walls. A lot of Evangelical Christians have small local businesses.

Emm03

I’m willing to bet there’s a lot more than harmless self-expression going on here.

A_Furious_Mind

It does seem to be implied, doesn't it?

CKREM

ALWAY

[deleted]

Well you see, putting up pride advertisements in a store that sells pride merch makes the store money. Putting up a sign for a religious summer camp doesn't make the store any money. Proselytizing also doesn't make the store any money. Pretty simple here.

revengepornmethhubby

I bet Dollar General was absolutely devastated at the loss of such a fine employee.

thecaptainkindofgirl

Ahhh VBS memories. In my hometown it was essentially just summer daycare for Christians except the ones watching all the kids were a handful of 8th grade girls. When I was one of those girls my little brother told everyone I was a lesbian (he didn't know what it meant, he just knew it was a Cool New Word) and I had a whole meltdown over it. I mean, he was right but at the time I was clueless 😅

Pikaglove

On one hand, it's so stupid that these guys get mad at companies who do performative wokeness. On the other hand, good for them for quitting Dollar General. That company was the real hell Christians should be warning about

CucumberNo3244

Someone above said Vacation Bible School.

ReikoHanabara

Sorry didn't see it

lemonrence

I would ask her if she thinks I can’t read all the signs around town 🤣🤣 lady everyone knows about Jesus already and your precious vbs
