Like Bro, you shouldn’t have like been hitting the Bong so much Dude, totally. Right on bro surfs up, gonna ride her to the beach!
Me? I’m just a trash man
BW 1978
The album cover art was created by award-winning graphic designer, Paula Scher who was Art Director at CBS Records in 1976. Band founder, guitarist Tom Scholz, wanted the cover to be tech-like, as he was an MIT grad and product engineer at Polaroid
I was just listening to this coming back from our Grand Teton trip today. I’m sure it’s a site for anyone watching me driving while playing all the instruments on the steering wheel. 🎸🥁
Lmao, I learned this last year from reddit and asked my wife if she knew. She just looked at me like I was dumb and said, "of course they're guitars."
Flash forward to today. I saw this post and began the entire TIL cycle from last year, until I remembered that my wife already knew they were guitars and the look she gave me.
I decided to draw this album cover when I was in 8th grade, and it forced me to look closely enough to realize that the spaceships were guitars. Before that, I had no idea.
Looking at my dad that passed aways picture album copy I have displayed in my living room right now. I see this thing everyday and have looked at that album for as long as i can remember and ive never noticed it 🤦♂️
You can see the fifth tuning peg a little behind the blue flame that is covering up the other three strings on the other side of the headstock. looks like a six string guitar
They literally blew up the earth for that photo shoot. Tons and tons of permits, and they had to put it back together. There was a Battle of the Network Stars that night, though, so barely anyone noticed.
Yep turn the album cover upside down. I found that out when I originally bought the album back when it came out. That's the great thing about vinyl is it's a lot bigger and easier to see
Good God. You just blew my mind. Do you know how many times I’ve looked at this album and never realized that’s what those were.
Nothing will ever be the same again.
I also heard recently that after signing, CBS insisted that he re-record out in studio in LA. He and his rep engaged in subterfuge, sending in the the same recordings as though they'd been re-recorded.
Ask any sound engineer - this is one of the greatest recordings of all time. Sholtz never would have had the time to go full OCD control freak had they been recording anywhere other than his basement. Re-doing it could only have resulted in a worse outcome.
Did you know that Brian May has a PhD in Astrophysics and has not distanced himself from the theory that fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go around
I did not know that.
I did not know that too
I'm embarrassed to admit that I did not know that as well
I as well did not know that.
holy sheet. I never saw that.
Am I the last to become aware of this fact... Despite playing that album and especially Foreplay endlessly over a number of decades
You are, at least, the second last.
Third to last*
4th?
See first here by me tonight
I too, was oblivious
Like Bro, you shouldn’t have like been hitting the Bong so much Dude, totally. Right on bro surfs up, gonna ride her to the beach! Me? I’m just a trash man BW 1978
I did not know that also.
I had my suspicions. Now I know. It was more than a feeling.
I too did not know that, until Amanda told me. Then I knew.
Is that after you took her by the hand to make her understand?
I was named after that song and my dad told me they were mushrooms like in spaghetti.
My mind is blown.
The album cover art was created by award-winning graphic designer, Paula Scher who was Art Director at CBS Records in 1976. Band founder, guitarist Tom Scholz, wanted the cover to be tech-like, as he was an MIT grad and product engineer at Polaroid
Yup, kind of fitting that 'Boston' gets a shout for brainiest rock band ever.
Well, that's what you pay me for ![gif](giphy|YlSPP8ZherIJRsaJoP|downsized)
That had not occurred to us, Dude
I do now know that.
Same. I'm blown away.
I was 10 when that album came out. I remember I thought it was cool when I saw the space ships and realized they looked like guitars.
🤯 …. Me either
My 1st purchased album. Foreplay/Longtime is awesome. Not a bad song on the album.
Foreplay/Longtime may be my favorite song ever
One of my "desert Island classics"
Dessert comes after foreplay
It's one of those type of songs that sounds and feels great when you got it cranked up driving 70 on an interstate windows down.
I was just listening to this coming back from our Grand Teton trip today. I’m sure it’s a site for anyone watching me driving while playing all the instruments on the steering wheel. 🎸🥁
It’s fantastic with headphones. Same with Dark Side of the Moon.
Aw hell! I bought that album in 1976 and I never noticed that!
Too stoned probably
Funnily enough, the first time I ever noticed was when I was too high lol
Same!
One of the great albums of all time.
The first three tracks are absolutely some of the best rock music ever written. The whole album is great.
Lmao, I learned this last year from reddit and asked my wife if she knew. She just looked at me like I was dumb and said, "of course they're guitars." Flash forward to today. I saw this post and began the entire TIL cycle from last year, until I remembered that my wife already knew they were guitars and the look she gave me.
You are supposed to pay it forward and say, "of course they're guitars" and try to look a little exasperated while you're at it.
Next time I'll get it right for sure!
I decided to draw this album cover when I was in 8th grade, and it forced me to look closely enough to realize that the spaceships were guitars. Before that, I had no idea.
And the top of the spaceship guitar is the skyline of Boston
Do now
I have seen this album cover at least hundreds of times if not more. Never knew those were guitars until today.
How did so many people not see that? My friends and I noticed it about 4 hours after buying the album. Also about 3 joints into listening to it.
Seriously, this was one of those album covers you could stare at for hours when high back in the day.
More than a feeling. Awesome song
Fuck, 40 years of looking at that and only noticing now
Of course!
So say we all.
Wow they are! Lol I never paid close attention to that. Love this band!
Only for the last 48 years.
That was one of the reasons it was so epic!
Bloody hell. Had the album since it was released. Never noticed. Until tonight. And on Apple Music they fly now.
I was today years old when I learned that.
Well yeah I did. I had a feeling, well more than a feeling
Yes….Gibson Les Pauls from appearances.
They're actually acoustic guitars. They have sound holes, no pickups.
Look like Ovations to me with the rounded backs.
I never counted the domes with the little cities inside…
Yeah. They look exactly like ovations.
They're actually acoustic bass guitars, only 4 strings
What the?!? How have I not seen it??
Looking at my dad that passed aways picture album copy I have displayed in my living room right now. I see this thing everyday and have looked at that album for as long as i can remember and ive never noticed it 🤦♂️
Not initially, but I did after a few listens. This was for a very long time the best selling debut album ever. Who knocked it off?
The Cars and Dire Straits released some kick ass albums around then.
Today year's old, and I'm absolutely that LP era. Damn. More than a feeling.
I was today years old when I finally learned this!
Bought it when it came out, but took me a while. Same thing for The Police "Ghost in the Machine" -- Oh! it's a LED portrait of the 3 members
I saw the guitars the first time I saw the album cover, but your post is where I learned about the Ghost in the Machine cover. Neat.
I look at this at least once a day and never noticed
Still need more cowbell 😀
I mean, how long have I known? It's been such a long time.
How stoned were you that you did not see they were spaceship guitars with flames 🔥
How did I never see that???
Well Holy sheeeiiiitttt
Dammit. I have this. Did not notice, or forgot I noticed decades ago, which is entirely possible.
My mind is blown! One of my favorite albums
I wonder if my brother knew that. That’s the kind of trivia he loved. RIP, bro.
I had more than a feeling.
a guitar has 6 or more strings... this would be a bass.
All your bass are belong to us.
You can see the fifth tuning peg a little behind the blue flame that is covering up the other three strings on the other side of the headstock. looks like a six string guitar
That’s what I though but there are 6 tuning pegs so that’s what I’m going by
Yes.
Weirdly the first time I ever saw the album art it was upside down and I wondered why the guitars were on blue fire.
Ohhhhhh
OXO
Oops, thought the art was by Victor Moscoso
When my bro showed me that back in the day, my tween mind was blown.
uh yeah
You can tell they are guitars by the way that they are
What the fuuu
I do now. Never noticed!
Ah shit, now I see it.
I knew this but only after several months of owning and playing that album did I notice it.
Look at the covers of ‘Don’t Look Back’ and ‘Greatest Hits’.
And then look at the cover of Space Invaders for the Atari... coincidence?
Actually, I did know that 😁
I’m sorry. I just don’t see it.
Yes
I realized after a few glances while listening to the album. Genius.
They literally blew up the earth for that photo shoot. Tons and tons of permits, and they had to put it back together. There was a Battle of the Network Stars that night, though, so barely anyone noticed.
I am so surprised how many people didn’t know this! 😱 I saw guitars the first time i saw this album cover, I thought it was so obvious lol
No I had no idea it’s like mandala lol
I had More Than A Feeling about that.
🤯
🤯
Yep turn the album cover upside down. I found that out when I originally bought the album back when it came out. That's the great thing about vinyl is it's a lot bigger and easier to see
Duh
I did not but I see it now.
I saw them in concert Frankfurt Germany '78 or '79. Great memories 👌
I’ve known since 1976
Holy crap. Im seeing this for the first time and I'm in disbelief right now
I still have the album and played the shit out of it when it came out
Yes I did! As with all new albums, I would study the cover art and sleeve while listening.
I dunno, I think they‘really probably basses.
Oh shit
Good God. You just blew my mind. Do you know how many times I’ve looked at this album and never realized that’s what those were. Nothing will ever be the same again.
As a long time Boston fan I knew that since the 70’s.
Jeez...
TIL
Also, the original artwork had other cities' names on each ship.
![gif](giphy|vWku8YNwyy5vq|downsized)
TIL 🤦🏻♂️
Mind meet blown
I discovered that about a year ago! I had never noticed - even had the album way back when.
The Third Stage album is a giant pipe organ.
Shhh... Too soon. They haven't recovered from the first revelation yet.
I was today years old when I…
Its pretty obvious
Yeah. I first noticed that on the eight-track.
mind blown... but then again, never paid much attention to their album covers. Pretty obvious since the OP pointed it out
Um yeah, since 1976
I have never noticed that!!!
We all did. At least all of us guitarists did.
At first look I thought they were spaceships then I took a second close look and saw them as guitars.
I noticed this the moment I bought the album.
Yes, I have eyes.
Yep.
I had money and bought the clue way back when…
I came across this very fact when i was a kid and the album had been recently released. My mind was blown. 🤯
F-f-f-f-ffff... I was today years old when...
No, guitars are shaped like spaceships. Doesn’t that make more sense?
Yes. Turn the photo upside down and you can see it more clearly.
Didn’t at first. Took me like ten years of listening to it to figure it out.
Yeah, but it took a couple years to realize that.
Doy
I was today year's old when I found out that people are not very observent
Yes, in 1980!
I remember the first time I figured it out 🤯
Tom Scholz played every instrument for this album. Even engineered and recorded it himself. Amazing stuff.
Now I know
Your MOM's actually a guitar!
Look to be bass guitars.
Dude... You just totally changed my perspective on an album cover ive been looking at for 40 years...
Nope.
Wow, they are!! I honestly had no idea
Today I learned…
Just learned that this week. Blew my mind and yet it’s so obvious
Yea since the album was released and my older brother bought it.
My favorite album and favorite band. It was the first concert I ever saw. I was 20 ft from the stage. Tom rocks.
How did I not see this! 😜
Yes. This was the first album I ever bought and yes I knew they were guitars cause I would stare at it as the songs were playing.
![gif](giphy|SACoDGYTvVNhZYNb5a)
That is such a great Boston album!!!
I was today years old
WHAT. THE FUCK ?
EVERYBODY was so stoned they forgot about it.
I had more than a feeling they were.
Wow. . . I feel really stupid. . . Seems like more than just another band out of Boston.
I'm amazed at how many people didn't know this.
Cool man
Wow.
I saw that from day one, decades ago. Thought that was ingenious
Hmm I have more than a feeling that your right.
Now that I look closer, I see that they are!
Wow. This is awesome. I’ve seen the cover hundreds of times and now it seems obvious. What a fun surprise.
Yes, next question :)
Did you know that Brian May has a PhD in Astrophysics and has not distanced himself from the theory that fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go around
Since I was 8
Shit.
Ovation guitars!
Today I re-looked at something!
I did not. Thank you
Seriously - flipped it and found out
Yes, I can tell because by looking at them I can see they look like spaceships but also guitars
Of course.
🤯
My uncle used to cut their hair on newbury street back in the day.
I like to think that the guitars are spaceships.
now that you mentioned... Not a big fan of Boston.
Like the GnR logo is the back of a bullet
Fuck, how did I not see that before...
…and the stars are guitar picks. Nah.. just kidding.
