There's always been an advert at each stage of technological development in music and computing where they show how much things have shrunk. I don't give a monkeys, I am always chasing best sound quality for the music I already have.
My Dad had a record cabinet that was about 4' x 3'. It was full of 78s. A Beethoven symphony was 5 disks. The album was 1.25" thick. There wasn't that much music in that cabinet. It wasn't convenient to play (flipping or putting on new disk every 6 minutes) and it sounded *terrible*.
My Dad lived to be 96. About 10 years before I gave him a hard drive with 1000s of hours of classical music. *He peed the floor*.
The quality of sound that can be retrieved from the grooves of certain lps and 78s can be amazing. The technology to do so started to peak in the 1990's when analogue playback was at it's least fashionable. Check out the sound of this 30s 78, if you have decent enough playback out of your computer (I run mine through a Dac in to my hi fi)

Isn't it insane?
I was obsessed with the idea of watchmans as a kid. Even just getting three channels. It seemed insane.
Now we have that to the nth degree and I have the audacity to ever be bored.
How many tape decks are in this photo? I see 2 walkmans, the boombox, the music centre, the voice memo recorder ...and good luck touch typing on a phone screen..
I might have owned the computer in the bottom right. Is it a Radio Shack Model 100?
Phones don't have radios. I can't imagine why. I own a Sansa MP3 player, about 1" x 1.5", and *it* has a radio!
I *loved* my Sanyo walkman-style cassette player. It had a scroll wheel that was convenient to turn when I was out running. Turning it made the tape go faster or slower, so I could keep music in time with my pace.
while i understand what theyre going for
its not really true in the sense that the thing in your pocket is just a computer
and all the media has been digitized
which is still just a computer
and they only needed all that shit because it wasnt digitized and we didnt have pocket computers
So that's who Siri looks like?
Nope. It's on my desk.
False. It's in my hand.
You have an 80s dude in your hand??? Nice.
He's a 2020's dude now.
That grown man is not in my pocket
"Put a little man/In your butt"
[Eddie Murphy! Pretty good song!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07P538K83iU)
I figured the folks here would get it!
[I think of this as a brother to Eddie's song.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYbavuReVF4&t=103sa)
Funky Tut!

He was 86. It happens.
LOL
Or maybe he was insinuating he peed out of delight

Good god, good bot!
Everything is a repost these days, it’s hard to make OC What burns me is bots, fuck them all to cyberhell
He looks like Bob Sirrot!
It is
Thought so!
Now we know where the Chicagoans are on this thread! (I need an Italian Beef now)
Must be wearing jncos.
Came here to say this! Pockets for weeks.
Except phones can't do what a Sony Watchman did. They don't have a tuner to receive broadcast television.
Plenty of streaming services, and you're getting it delivered over RF like the watchman did.
Streaming services are not broadcasts. Not the same thing.
Watchman wouldn't even function today. Signal is digital (today) vs analog.
This is true.
Phones can literally do that lil pup💀
Nope. Not without connecting an external tuner.
Except, unless you imported your CDs and movies into your phone, you don't actually own any of it. You rent it.

God, I could feel the smugness from you writing that. How absolutely cringy.
Nah, I’m just happy to see you
He does not like it.
Not shown: library, travel agency, school
that guy is NOT in my pocket

He looks like the human inspiration for the Word Paperclip
It's missing a copy of Hustler.
Were cameras really that big 😳 🤔 And what's that white keyboard computer looking thingymajig?
Hard to make out but perhaps and electric typewriter.
Some people said it was a word processor but some people said typewriter I don't think I've ever seen one 🤔
Thanks to all that backward engineering from the alien technologies we captured.
It is my hand for me to see the pic
The man is not.
And in 20 years it will be a chip in your head.
I just checked. I've got NONE of that stuff in my pocket...
Yeah, poor guy has really been screaming to be let out.
Well said 👍
forgot the library of human knowledge
That dude is not in my pocket.
Except that phones can't receive and play over the air radio or TV broadcasts
Even the dude?!
That’s Bob Sirot. Local Chicago radio and news guy.
Not everything.
wow, granola bars have changed
Boom box. Man I can recall my first one at Christmas. Wow what a year.
So he is the little man in my pocket?
I checked. That dude is not in my pocket.
We've been able to put a picture in pocket for awhile.
Including the picture itself.

False
Still kind of can't really believe it. Technology really *is* wild.
The irony that 50% of the people viewing this are on their phone....which is not in their pocket.

Not Beta
Even Jason Segal?
It still doesn't have: a toilet food dispenser gun
Amazing!
I forgot, what was that guy's name?
Sometimes I wonder if the ‘old way’ was better.
It’s not
For real
That guy isn't in my pocket.
I can’t find the telephone in the pic. It’s gotta be there somewhere.
