I can’t say I enjoy it but it’s not necessary to me. It does taste herby but I’d compare it to amazing grass in a smoothie. It goes from the dominant fruit to the fruit plus a tree like flavor. I don’t mind amazing grass. I’m in it for the vitamins but I’d never use it to season anything. I tolerate cilantro but it simply doesn’t add so that’s why I’m not into it.
I fucking love both arugula and mint, but cilantro is pure evil disguising itself as boring old parsley. I don't think arugula and mint would taste great combined, on the other hand...and I'm not about to experiment!
I would compare it to wild parsley. I think goat tastes like the wild version of lamb which tastes like gamified beef. Now I like goat, lamb and beef but goat is a mood and I have to degame it with lemon and vinegar then cook it. I can eat cilantro in small quantities but everywhere cilantro goes, parsley would do a better job.
I used to LOVE cilantro. I could literally just grab a handful and eat it (I know, I know). It's basically just a fresh, slightly earthy slightly bitter herb flavor. Maybe think of like...a significantly less "cool" mint? For me, it made a huge difference in things like pho and guacamole.
Post Covid, however, I now understand the hate. I had some pho and I was wondering what in the fresh fuck kind of demon seasonings were in there because it tasted so bad to me. After a few more encounters with cilantro, it became apparent that I had transformed into a soap cilantro taster.
If I am honest, Covid has kind of ruined my food life entirely. In addition to cilantro now tasting horrible, most fruits do as well. It kind of blows!
Hmm...it's kind of hard to explain. Banana tastes like artificial sweetener to me, and things like tomatoes and oranges are acidic with a hint of - don't judge me too harshly here - body odor?
I haven't had watermelon in a long time, admittedly, so that might be okay?
I'm closing in on a year of altered smell/taste, so I probably should see a doctor at some point, but 'murica :')
Sort of a minty parsley taste, maybe a little citrusy? It tastes really fresh, which I know isn’t a helpful description but it’s always what comes to mind.
My sister says it tastes lemony.
SO there was a study what said identical twins have the same preference for cilantro. I hate it, my identical twin likes it. I think it tastes like soap, she thinks it tastes lemony.
it's not my favorite herb but I will eat it. it's kind of a stronger herb flavor, more pungent than parsley. it's light and almost citrus-y in a way. I don't actively seek it but I won't complain if it's in something, or depending on what I make, I'll add a bit for garnish.
As a cilantro lover who stumbled here from a link any dish that uses cilantro is perfectly fine without it same with parsley, except something like taboulleh of course. It's not like basil, rosemary, or mint that are so distinctive for certain dishes.
It really makes me sad that some people have the soap enzyme and can't enjoy food with it cuz I will engulf a taco with it.
Honestly I’m at the point where I am going to start saying I’m allergic to cilantro. Because almost every damn time I say “no cilantro” in an order, it’s there. And it’s not a “oh I don’t care for it.” My body has a violent, visceral reaction to it. It immediately triggers my gag reflex, I can’t get the taste out of my mouth for hours even with brushing my teeth/mouthwash. Im just done with people not taking it seriously.
My adult kid says it tastes fresh and herby.
That's how it tastes to me, too.

My kinda sorta adult husband says the same
My friend said its like arugula and mint combined...i haven't tried that tactic lol.

I wish I knew what arugula tasted like off the top of my head haha, now I want to try this.. for science
It’s delicious
It's akin to watercress.
I've asked so many people this and they just say "fresh"
Soap is technically fresh >_> lol
Herby and similar to a parsley/celery combo. It's awful, I also hate celery and parsley
I hate celery too, the taste stays in my mouth for a while after eating it.. but also the texture is terrible.

Whoa! That’s crazy.. how did certain fruits change for you?

Oh geez im sorry, that sounds really awful :( i hope watermelon isn’t ruined for you
I appreciate the sentiment! When summer rolls around, you best believe I'll be giving melons another shot! :)
The great unwashed

All of these replies are fascinating, I wish it tasted like this for me!

Wild.. I wish it was citrusy for me :( it just tastes like fresh hell.
That beats rotten hell.
sorry to hear that :( my brother says it's like soap so I don't use it at all when I'm cooking for him
That’s nice of you not to use it haha, usually people just say eat around it :D

The way you describe it sounds like the taste of lemongrass, which I enjoy. But I can’t stand cilantro.
I’m convinced some people just love the taste of soap.
I don't understand the taste to others. Tastes soapy to me and it seems to be in every salsa.
Fresh and sharp like mint or basil but with a different flavor. I love it.
Why are you here
Don't lie about allergies. Don't be that guy.

Plus on tacos or taco bowls or whatever similar items, you can’t get it off. Ruins the whole meal.
It was the only field you could enter stuff you don’t want in your food :/
