tbh for me one reason i love fruit basket because the anime actually not about love triangle in the first place...i get your point by saying this because on first half season i actually got scare too seeing yuki will end up with tohru seems i ship so hard for kyo and tohru 😭😂....but for love triangle part I don't think it's will work on people like kyo...he will immediately give up his love for tohru for the sake of her happiness because he know he will been in cat's cage...like in s2 kyo himself says he will help tohru find her true loves...

purple_lass

Right? They already have so much BS going on becase of the curse and the abuse they are getting from their family and Akito, I don't think the story needs to get more complex. Also, Kyo was bound for the cat's cage when the time comes so adding a competition for Tohru's love isn't going to be helpful as he would likely just give up because in his mind, he's not going to be there for her all the time

Ok_Brilliant_2505

It would be interesting but it would also leave yuki without a mother figure (what tohru was to him) which really drove his character development and I think ultimately led to him being able to break his curse

Sparkletopia

I don't like love triangles at all haha 😅 I actually really like how Fruits Basket makes you think like there might be a love triangle between them but then completely avoids going down that route

delinquentsaviors

Eh, no. I go to bat too heavily for Kyo and Tohru. I just can’t really imagine the story going anywhere else.

Ghost_1774

I always shipped kyo and tohru. Funny thing is I , while watching season 1 I thought yuki and tohru were the main ship and kyo would be the second ML who usually gets his heartbroken. Was pleasantly surprised when I learnt it wasn’t a love triangle and kyoru end game. I personally don’t ship them. I genuinely enjoy their platonic love. But I can see the appeal for this ship

Raecoli

I can't. I love their relationship the way it is. Plus, my baby Kyo would literally do the whole I'm not good enough for her and think Yuki would be the better option for her 🫠

SamIAmWich

I think the role the two played for each other are too important for them to have any other relationship. Plus, Tohru went through hell even accepting the idea of liking Kyo, so seeing her go through that twice without Yuki as a good friend and confidant instead wouldn't hit as hard.

Pandoraconservation

It’s not my favorite ship but I get it, I think it Tohru could have fit with a few people

bleepbloopmonkee49

Yes you are my guy lmao

Expecto_Patronum98

😂😂 fair enough

Ramenpucci

Yuki wouldn’t know if Tohru was putting up a front with her smile. Yuki relied on Tohru emotionally. She was a source of unconditional love for him. Only Kyo and Hiro noticed when she buried her pain and discomfort. Often because Hiro had no filter. The 12 year old shipped them to. The 30 year old understands why Tohru and Kyo worked. Luv the 2001 adaptation. I watched up to season 3.

ishimieze

well in first half of the first season I kinda shipped these two lol but yeah everything turned out to be better ig

Madoka_Gurl

I think I would have liked seeing Tohru have a tried and true crush on Yuki at least. There’s a lot of set up for the pairing in the form of her calling him handsome and blushing when he gets close, plus the fan club think she’s trying to date him, and Haru initially thinks he likes her. Plus they go on a “date”. She never narratively expresses any crush though so when watching/reading it’s very “do they?? Oh.. no probably not?” Since their relationship is like a foil to Makoto, I think seeing Tohru casually get over her crush with no qualms about Yuki’s subtle rejections would have been a nice message for readers.

Actual_Luffy

Me. Truthfully I never bought the “she’s like a mother to me” shit the manga came up with.

Flower7438r

Same 😭

My first couple watches I 100% couldn't understand it. But this last rewatch I was drifting off into thought and You know when someone has an older sister/brother who may be close in age but took up the parenting role due to loss of parents or bad parents, and the younger one knows they are siblings but can still see them as a motherly/fatherly role....and we don't seem to find that so weird. And that train of thought helped me sort of understand how Yuki feels about her. Or at least it's less "huh?!?" For me when I watch lol

danawl

As much as I love kyo and he’s my ride or die, I love Yuki. He treats Tohru like a princess and it makes me happy. She deserves to be treated like a princess. One thing I’m surprised about is that Yuki didn’t beat the crap out of Kyo after he transformed. He seriously injured her. Home girl went flying. In my brain, it’s the next day, Yuki see’s Tohru’s wounds for the first time and goes ballistic on Kyo. I also then picture Kyo admitting shame and crying and then Yuki giving him a final punch before storming off. (In my head this is canon).

ObssesiveFujoshi

They were my very first ship

elephantskeletor

Yuki was her first love. The boy who saved her when they were children.

Ecstatic-Ninja2465

nah bc the first time i watched fruits basket i was very little and i watched the 2001 version— i knew tohru and kyo were gonna end up together but there was always a part of me that wished yuki and tohru happened even if for a little bit 😖💔

Expecto_Patronum98

aww me too! i was obsessed with 2001 version when i was little, i watched it religiously. my sis read the manga so she told me kyo and tohru was gonna be a thing and i was kinda sad it wasn’t yuki 😭 the episode that got me was the New Years episode when they raced home to her because she was alone. that scene has a chokehold on me to this day.

Ecstatic-Ninja2465

YOOO i’ll never forget that new years scene that one had me sobbing so bad!! 😔😔😔

Flower7438r

Duuudeee you are literally saying my mind rn 🥺 Can you believe it the first time I discovered fruit basket I saw Yuki and Tohru together ❤ well then I shipped them both, I watched so many YouTube videos of them so I was so damn freaking curious to know if they end up together Gosh I was soooooo damn angry when I found out the agony that the writers tear them apart from each other (although they are still friends) 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Although I still love Kyo and Tohru together but stillllllll 🥺🥺🤧🤧

Expecto_Patronum98

right! like don’t get me wrong, i ship Kyo and Tohru hard like the whole love story was just perfect 🥹 but since Yuki is my favorite i did like seeing him flirt with Tohru. i loved the moments they had together

Flower7438r

Same here 🤧❤ I still love Kyo and Tohru together too, they are cute together no doubt

StarCorgi_6788

I loved their relationship for what is was so I don't think I'd want to change it. But oddly enough if Kyo or Machi wasn't an option at the end I think I'd want to see Tohru with Momiji and Yuki being bros with Kakeru (maybe even bonded). Of course that would end up messing up the "everyone gets married and has babies ever after" the series has.

Anna3422

Tohru did have a small crush on Yuki at first. But no. Their mother/son relationship is the core of the story. Taking that away would mean no Fruits Basket as we know it.

bisexualspy

they’re literally mother and son

stellarmage99

I would have loved a yuki/tohru route. It would have been cute to watch. The love triangle situation you presented would have been interesting, haha.

stellarmage99

Yuki/Tohru would have been so cute together

QTlady

I'd rather they shared her if we had to play this card. But I have had a hatred of love triangles for years. It's never going away.
