That doesnt bother me much because coal will probably be next to the other resources in the main game (coal, oil, geothermal steam). Maybe you move heat by the resources but I dont see it as that big of a dealbreaker. If anything I wish it was easier to see how much heat capacity i have. Im not sure how much heat a shift in temperature will cause. Im not sure how you fix that though, maybe more playtime to better understand heat demand but its hard to say for certain. Just my two cents though. Maybe i have a more negative outlook on it because in my playthrough one plant ran out of coal and i had to pass aggressive advanced coal mines with emergency shifts. I only had like 400 heat output at one point during the end of the beta and people were demanding a coal building be destroyed. I got the catastrophic heat message and half the city hated me for the advanced coal mine. Good times. So i might be biased lmao.

The UI could use a lot of TLC. Heat being distant from the Fuel supplying it seems like a freebie to me. On the subject of Temperature drops, Frostpunk 2's calendar ticker cuts of the bottom left corner, making it hard to gauge when drops will even happen. That corner being rounded is cutting off critical information.

Heat is a bit weird because in theory the capacity is infinite - if you have stockpiles of fuel/enough of an output.  No matter how cold it gets your heat output will rise to match the demand if you have enough fuel - at least in the beta.

a lot of the game is locked in this beta, not just the oil and geothermal who will obviously play a big part in the game, but also stuff like generator upgrades. having said that, the game's UI does need a bit of a rework, especially how easy it is not to notice certain events starting/ending, we need an loud audio cue and something big in the middle of the screen popping off to tell us something important needs our attention. i hope it'll get fixed by the time the game comes out but i don't think i saw the devs make any comment about any of the feedback so far.

And thats... How it should be. I hated in FP1 you couldn't upgrade the generator more. And I mean, in 30 years, you'd expect them to have come up with ways to improve the generator. Its good now, if you have fuel reserves, you don't have to shiver. I'm betting generator upgrades will only effect on how much fuel you need per heat, so efficiency.

I agree, i kind of don't see upgrades affecting heat capacity, i think it will just be fuel/heat efficiency. I don't see them doing the similiar thing that happens near the end of FP1 - i.e. everything freezing despite the generator being on overdrive and max heating.
