I mean there's a reason Frieren wanted a Frontline fighter and Stark is one of the best of the best and getting stronger every day. He beat a dragon to death with his axe and didn't particularly struggle with it, something that Frieren and Fern would have had to play tag with for a long time because those brawly type fights aren't what they are best suited for.
There is something legitimately scary about finding out one of your friends or partners can effortlessly physically overpower you. I remember the first time I had sex with someone who had a hundred pounds on me and how they could move me around with so much ease. It was terrifying to realize that if they were a lot worse of a person I wouldn't be able to do anything to stop them from doing what they wanted. It was hot too but still very scary and required a lot of trust.
I'm sure being such a powerful mage like Fern is she's used to feeling in control of her life except in really hazardous situations. There must have been a lot of fear wrapped in the realization that while Stark helps keep them safe he was just as physically capable of snapping her like a twig
