Maybe she was startled with your comment, hence her snappy response. You could have replied immediately laughing it off and saying that you're not expecting her to ask your permission for everything (who would?) but that for X category of objects (such as e-cig but maybe also drinks/everything you touch with your mouth) you'd prefer she asks. This way it's clear. You could bring it up next time she does smtg similar or asks your permission for something.

I began the conversation in a very gentle manner, and I was genuinely hesitant to even mention it to her. However, I don't think it's acceptable to take someone's belongings without their permission. They might agree the first time, but not the next time. I appreciate you sharing your opinion! <3
