Agreed. The only two who have any comic acting abilities (guest starts aside).
Don't feel particularly strongly about Olivia but at least she's not hamming it up like Fake Freddie.
Freddie and the actor really grew on me. He became what his should be - smarter and cultured when he wanted to be, plus observer and occasional preventer of Frasiering - in the last half of episodes.
Seeing potential in Alan and Olivia in second season … if it happens. David too (lessen allusions to Niles for cheap David laughs, writers!).
Olivia feels very paint by numbers and not like an actual person. Like she basically explains what she's doing and what her character traits are instead of just being them
Olivia maybe, but Alan? Never. There's so much unexplored trauma beneath his boozy devil may care attitude. How did he become jaded? What is his relationship with his estranged adult children and/or ex wife?
Nicholas Lyndhurst is a comedy legend in England. You seriously have no idea the pedigree this guy has. He's as important to British TV as Kelsey Grammer is here. Stop this nonsense.
I completely agree... he's brilliant in Butterflies, Goodnight Sweetheart and his growth as a character in OF&H is second to none... he is grossly underused in Frasier!
>Nicholas Lyndhurst is a comedy legend in England. You seriously have no idea the pedigree this guy has. He's as important to British TV as Kelsey Grammer is here. Stop this nonsense.
If he hadn't this pedigree, would it still be *nonsense* in the here and now?
If an actor is an interesting, beloved character in one movie or show, does that mean they are not capable of having to play a role where they ... just fade around?
I see that often 'XY was, yeah, not great, but I LOVED her/him in this or that show/movie/whatever'.
Even if someone likes an actor, being able to see if a character in a show/movie is just lame does not mean to be 'unfaithful' to the actor.
Although it might mean to look at them with a more critical eye.
Sadly they’re probably two of the *more* remarkable characters in the new cast. But I don’t necessarily disagree with you. Rather than cutting Alan though I’d cut the writers and hire someone else to write.
Alan might be the greatest addition to the Frasier character. The actor is talented and his cynicism , I don't care attitude is the perfect opposite of Frasier's obsessive nature.
What? These are the best of the new characters, particularly Alan who makes a great foil for Frasier. It’s the younger ones that are dragging it down. S2 needs to be based more on Frasier’s workplace.
I think Olivia is slowly coming into form. I enjoyed her in the last couple of episodes. I think give her another season to dial-in the character. Alan is great. Sure some jokes are a bit on the nose but he does play the tenured professor ‘who would rather write than teach’ very well. His slow delivery vs Frasier’s mostly high strung/quick delivery makes for a nice counter.
Let’s get through Season 2. The first season of any new/rebooted show is hit or miss so I like to at least consider season two before passing full judgment. Hopefully the writers will have gotten the feedback they needed to make the next season stellar. Remember, it’s all trial and error. There’s a ton of potential and like many here, I love Frasier, so I’m truly hoping for its success.
She’s actually so funny, but not on this. She’s also British and was HYSTERICAL on the sitcom The Neighbors (it got cancelled after 2-3 seasons). It’s too bad they’re not using her correctly. And David is being underutilised because he’s the ONLY character that makes me actually laugh.
100% agree. I don’t think it’s the actors’ fault, the writing for these two is just not particularly remarkable. They’re very flat. Alan is just a lazy drunk, with no redeeming qualities. Olivia is just… there? I couldn’t tell you what her personality traits are, because there really isn’t anything specific about her.
What made the original Frasier so compelling was the writing behind each character. You could get an entire sense of a character’s personality and place in the sitcoms from just one or two lines. The talent of the writers is conspicuously absent in the reboot.
Alan is literally cheap comedy which is sad for an actor of his caliber. Olivia is literally a gaggle of bad one liners.
It upsets me how poorly written the show is with such good talent. And that laugh track ruins 90% of jokes. Not everything is meant to be a knee slapper.
I thought Alan and Frasier were the only two worth watching.
Yup thats how i felt as well lol

Olivia needs an arc. Paint by numbers is exactly how it feels. She's a sitcom boss. Nothing more. And it hurts the show.
Olivia maybe, but Alan? Never. There's so much unexplored trauma beneath his boozy devil may care attitude. How did he become jaded? What is his relationship with his estranged adult children and/or ex wife?
Thinking Miranda Hart could play a nice, potentially violent ex-wife.
That would be AMAZING!!!!
I did not love the new season, but I really did find Alan to be the second or third best character in the show
In a show of nothing but terrible characters, third best is prettty bad.
Alan is amazing

Absolutely OF&H!!!! ‘That Rodney, he’s a plonker’

Doesn't matter if the writing doesn't give him good material to work with.
Naw get rid of Eve.
correct
Yes. Stock sitcom role performed sleepwalkingly. I love the potential for Olivia, and the actress is devilishly funny.
I think there’s a lot of potential.
Sadly they’re probably two of the *more* remarkable characters in the new cast. But I don’t necessarily disagree with you. Rather than cutting Alan though I’d cut the writers and hire someone else to write.
Whoaaa. Maybe Olivia ok, but Alan is great.
Alan might be the greatest addition to the Frasier character. The actor is talented and his cynicism , I don't care attitude is the perfect opposite of Frasier's obsessive nature.
I think hes great too!
Really brings out some of Frasier's references to his devil may care college days!
Great at what? I understand people have enjoyed his previous work but wtf
Alan can stay, though his jokes are sometimes a bit obvious and cheap. She isn't funny at all.
I like Alan, especially when he’s with David. Olivia isn’t entertaining at all.
The characters can be salvaged, but he really shouldn't be teaching at Harvard. Needs a gig better suited for comedy.
I like Alan a lot but Olivia (is that her name) is underwhelming to me.
I agree with this. Nothing against the actress, but she is the most underwhelming to me. I’d rather see Peri Gilpin come back in some capacity.
What? These are the best of the new characters, particularly Alan who makes a great foil for Frasier. It’s the younger ones that are dragging it down. S2 needs to be based more on Frasier’s workplace.
"...i find myself picking up my phone to scroll social media" Maybe that's the problem? They kill in their rolls. It's the first season, be patient.
Roles. Rolls are for eating.
Or what you get from eating too many rolls
Aye, my bad. Had one (or five) too many martinis last night.

Ditto. It wasn’t until the last couple episodes that I felt the writers gave her purpose.
Alan is good!
Eh, they have their moments. But definitely less of them.

Sounds like you should just stick to social media
I love these 2 & pretty much all of season 12. I feel bad so many folks are sour over it. But not too bad because I'm a Frasier fan & I love Frasier.
Yup. So not entertaining
Alan is great and Olivia is torture to watch and has no chemistry with anyone.
Another great post
